After putting carb back in my Kohler 730S 25hp engine, it starts now but have to play with choke to keep it running. Either sounds like a jet or struggles to run. Just learning this and cleaned solenoid but didn' t know how to test it and don' t remember it moving? Am I dealing with a fuel solenoid issue and need to take it back off or coukd this be a choke cable sticking, it feels "sticky" when I move it up and down, but not frozen as a does move lever it' s connected to. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Trying to keep it out of landfill/recycling! Built in 02 but very lightly used, I'm second ower and replaced carb in 2017 with expensive Kohler carb, $200+.
The solenoid clicks (moves) but still dos not allow fuel to flow. Fuel pump is working, and spraying fuel in carb allows it to run just fine. It was a sudden stop. And has worked on and off a few times. Any ideas?
I'm getting no power to solenoid I'm assuming because a don't hear it click when i turn ignition key on. i removed the seat safety device so mower wouldn't cut off if i got off lawnmower now it wont start. any ideas?
If the solenoid fails or jams, can it also jam in the closed, ar retracted, position ? I drive a 1996 Malaysian Proton Saga, with the Mitsubishi 1,296 cc 4G13 engine, using an Aisan variable venturi type carburetor. I believe I can see a fuel cut-off, or antidieseling, solenoid at the rear of the carburetor. Often, on stopping and turning off the ignition key, the engine runs on, or diesels. So I thought maybe the solenoid had malfunctioned, jamming in the open position, and failing to close the fuel when the ignition key had turned off.
What would fry my fuel shut off valve? My mower stopped on me and I saw smoke coming from the engine. When I looked at it, the shut off solenoid connector had melted and was smoking.
Supplying 12v to the solenoid will engage the magnet and pull it down. Taking away the 12v will disengage the magnet and the spring should push the plunger back to stop the fuel from going into the main jet. If you put 12v to the solenoid, but it doesn't move, you need to replace it!
So the solenoid is working and if I spray starter fluid in through the air intake my mower will fire and then shut back off. I’m getting spark and I’m getting fuel to the carburetor. I don’t know what else to check to get this thing to fire and stay running. Got a fuel issue somewhere but it’s not in the supply line and like I said I took the solenoid out and turned the key and the plunger is moving up and down and the carburetor is filling with fuel. I’m stuck. Any suggestions? In short I’m cranking but will not fire unless I use some starter fluid and then it shuts right back off?
K never taken one off but I guess I can take the carburetor off and try and clean it out or something, see if there isn’t something blocking the flow of fuel into the jet.
My carburetor was giving me problems I finally disconnected the wire from the bottom of the solenoid and the lawnmower ran like brand new I put a fuel shut off valve in the fuel line and turn it off while the motor is running and let it run out of gas it works for me

Mine snaps open with the key on and when it is switched off. Gas drains out into the crankcase. I have the inline shutoff but the battery goes dead so ... ignition switch.
Be careful expecting a 9v battery to "unlock" a frozen or gunked up solenoid. Mine would just click but not move, until I wired it directly to the batter (12v) and then it broke loose and began working again!!
@@rayray9777 electromagnets on the PTO clutches are also generally non polarized, with the exception of ones with diodes, which then makes them direct current DC and will have a red and black or red and green wire to identify positive and ground.
Wayne Stefinashen the fuel solenoid is really an anti backfire solenoid and was made for that....it wasn't made to stop leaks...if you put a shut off valve in fuel line it won't do the same as the solenoid....the solenoid immediately blocks the main jet so no fuel will get to the engine...even if you turned off engine and turned off shut off valve immediately you still have a carburetor bowl full of fuel which can still cause engine to backfire....
Macknumber9 you are absolutely correct but sometimes a carburetor rebuild kit is not available, nor is a replacement fuel solenoid so easy peasy cut off the solenoid stem and install a fuel shutoff valve but notify your customer to throttle down before shutting off the engine and NEVER forget to shut of the fuel valve.
Thank you, some more safety crap to go bad. Just got a generator for free. Cleaned the carb, it runs when feeding the throttle body manually. Gonna check the solenoid now
@@macknumber9 But the engine will start and run and do the job it was built to do. There only 3 things that make your troy built pony not to start 1 No fuel, 2 clog fuel filter, 3 the Carburetor Solenoid. And most likely its the Solenoid. B @ S engines are bad about blow them out When you hear it go? POP! Like a back fire! THAT THE PROBLEM!
Another way they can go bad is by leaking. I have a Briggs 25 hr that went bad and I’m lucky I caught the wires were actually glowing with gas dripping. I would eliminate it completely I think it’s a horrible design
Because sometimes they're single wire solenoids, which means it grounds to the base of it to the carb. So bench testing is easy. If it's dual wire, yes you can unscrew, plug in and test
@@EliminatorPerformance I’m not questioning your integrity you seem like a pretty intelligent person but the fuel solenoid has absolutely zero to do with the engine flooding. it not only floods up through the main jet but it floods through the atmospheric vent
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 You can disagree if you want, but maybe I should have clarified I'm talking about when the engine is off. Let's say you let a mower sit, and the needle valve leaks, the bowl is overfilling with fuel, the fuel has no where else to go other than up the main jet, then down the intake and into the cylinder. That's how many mowers end up with fuel in the crankcase. The fuel shut off solenoid is in the closed position and blocks the main jet. Therefore, fuel cannot travel up the main jet and flood the cylinder and then the crankcase.
@@EliminatorPerformance See that’s exactly what I’m talking about the fuel has other places to go. It fills up the carburetor and out the atmospheric vent. The fuel solenoid is not stopping the carburetor from flooding.
Pro tip couldn’t see the solenoid in action due to subtitling pro tip it’s called a petcock valve bro tip you don’t really have to explain what a 9 V battery plug is
When there's a leaking needle valve, the bowl floods and fuel goes up the main jet into the intake and can sometimes flood a crankcase if the carb is higher than the intake port. With a fuel solenoid, it closes the main jet, which will prevent the engine from flooding. The carb bowl will still flood though, and would run rich as soon as you start it
Pulled it out and no rubber tip on it???? Where did that go? No ignition with spark to a new plug! Sprayed carb cleaner everywhere and reinstalled the bowl and solenoid. STILL no ignition. Sprayed gas into the cylinder and reinstalled the plug.. NOTHING! One back fire and that was it. Its a mystery! Modern technology is driving me NUTS! #$@%@ If it works LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE!

'm getting no power to solenoid I'm assuming because a don't hear it click when i turn ignition key on. i removed the seat safety device so mower wouldn't cut off if i got off lawnmower now it wont start. any ideas?
hi, my rider stopped and noticed smoke coming from under the carb and engine stopped. when i turned the ignition on the wire on shut off solenoid glowed red and smoked at the connection any idea what to do? thanks anyone who can help.
Replace the fuel shut off solenoid
TO me it sound like it jump time. but its the Carburetor Solenoid that JUST WENT OUT> and it will not start
Mine snaps open with the key on and when it is switched off. Gas drains out into the crankcase. I have the inline shutoff but the battery goes dead so ... ignition switch.
You could use your battery charger as well to power the solenoid valve.
Be careful expecting a 9v battery to "unlock" a frozen or gunked up solenoid. Mine would just click but not move, until I wired it directly to the batter (12v) and then it broke loose and began working again!!
Yea I have a 12v lithium ion battery pack that I use now, much easier and charges via a USB cable!
How did you know what side was the negative and the positive?
It's doesn't matter, the majority of electromagnets are non polarized, meaning current can flow both ways and it will be powered
@@EliminatorPerformance I thought that principle only applied to 24 V DC
@@EliminatorPerformance I thought that only applied to 24 V AC
@@rayray9777 electromagnets on the PTO clutches are also generally non polarized, with the exception of ones with diodes, which then makes them direct current DC and will have a red and black or red and green wire to identify positive and ground.
I have the wire pulled out of my solenoid on my vstar, would that be a reason of cause of not starting?
Yes.it controls your fuel.with wire off it stops fuel flow
yes the solenoid is stuck in the closed position without power going to it.
Genius
Nice short video that may save an ELIMINATOR $100 for a shut off solenoid by replacing with an in line $6 fuel shut off valve.
The stuck shut off valve doesn't allow the fuel into the carb bowl.Isn't the point to get the mower running.I did the same thing and my mower has been working for at least 2 years without that expensive POS. Just shut it off slowly so it doesn't backfire. It won't hurt it even if it does. I actually cut the tip off the shut off solenoid. It still works fine. Be sure to turn off the inline fuel valve when finished.
Is there any way to bypass that dam thing?
You can cut them off, but you'll have to throttle down your engine when you shut it off or it will most likely back fire! Thanks for watching!
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks. I just tried to remove it and it snapped off like a dry twig the moment I put a wrench on it. It seems to be seized and full of grime. I just looked up a new one and its $100. I think my old tractors without this thing might be superior. lol
Why not just use jumper wires to the mower battery? That seems simple to me.
Agree! And its 12v. The time he spent dwelling on the 9v plug was annoying.
This is something to do if your already cleaning the carb...
There's a wire plug you connect to the solenoid switch witch is activated by turning the key on and off.they go bad sometimes stick.you need to replace it.
Or just pull the solenoid, put a piece of duct tape over the hole, plug it in and turn over the engine. All this drama is a waste of time.
if your battery is dead jumper it to your battery charger. No waiting for it to charge
Mine shoots out when power is applied?
It's opposite then, power is applied to push it out. Weird that they would design it to use power when key is off, but I'm sure it's not much.
@@EliminatorPerformance Yes, I thought it was strange too and possibly defective, but that is apparently how it works. It's a huayi 140. Can't find any information about it. Great channel. Thanks for all these interesting videos.
@@bobjones1620 Try reversing the poles
Bluetooth fuel shutoff solenoid to stop a thief from stealing my car brought me here. Guess I'll keep researching.
Thanks - good to know .
I just bypass minds useing a switch works fine I just turn on the switch when I’m useing it then turn it off when it’s still running for can close it
Yes you can do without them, just throttle down before shutting engine off
So if solenoid is good what else could be wrong with a no start, change spark plugs new battery new switch new fuel pump. $225 at a small engine shop that screwed me it worked one time after they worked on it!! It's like fuel ain't getting through! New gas, we have tried everything.
It's a john deer la145.
Here's a real pro tip, shut the gas line off, remove anti backfire solenoid, plug it back in and turn the key off and on. Tune in next week for tips on how to fill up your gas tank.
Would this solenoid be causing the air intake to fill with gas?
There only 3 things that make your troy built pony not to start 1 No fuel, 2 clog fuel filter, 3 the Carburetor Solenoid. And most likely its the Solenoid. B @ S engines are bad about blow them out When you hear it go? POP! Like a back fire! THAT THE PROBLEM!
I have a 17.5hp Pony that fills the air intake with gas and backfires loud. Is this the problem? I look at the float valve and it seems fine.
Another way they can go bad is by leaking. I have a Briggs 25 hr that went bad and I’m lucky I caught the wires were actually glowing with gas dripping. I would eliminate it completely I think it’s a horrible design
Why not just unscrew it from the carb and plug it back in and turn the key to see if it works, That would be easier.
Because sometimes they're single wire solenoids, which means it grounds to the base of it to the carb. So bench testing is easy. If it's dual wire, yes you can unscrew, plug in and test
Also, you won't know if it's the solenoid that's bad or no impulse coming from the plug/wire connection.
The fuel solenoid has absolutely nothing to do with engine flooding
If the needle valve is leaking but the fuel solenoid is seized closed than the engine won't flood with fuel because it can't travel up the main jet.
@@EliminatorPerformance I’m not questioning your integrity you seem like a pretty intelligent person but the fuel solenoid has absolutely zero to do with the engine flooding. it not only floods up through the main jet but it floods through the atmospheric vent
@@EliminatorPerformance ruclips.net/video/OsQ_R0AQG9o/видео.html
Pro tip couldn’t see the solenoid in action due to subtitling pro tip it’s called a petcock valve bro tip you don’t really have to explain what a 9 V battery plug is
Fuel solenoids do not stop crankcase flooding with fuel !!!
When there's a leaking needle valve, the bowl floods and fuel goes up the main jet into the intake and can sometimes flood a crankcase if the carb is higher than the intake port. With a fuel solenoid, it closes the main jet, which will prevent the engine from flooding. The carb bowl will still flood though, and would run rich as soon as you start it
@@EliminatorPerformance That still doesn’t account for the quart of fuel in the crankcase .
Guess what. Cut the tip off the solenoid. Won’t have to do any of this.
......until it gets hot.....
Video would be a lot better without the unnecessary rock music.
