YouTube MUSIC Rule Change - NEW Loophole That's BLOWING UP Creators

- Have you heard about the new RUclips music rule change? RUclips rules and regulations change on a regular basis, but this is one of the rules of RUclips that smaller RUclips Creators should be concerned about. RUclips rules (2019) and RUclips Rules (2020) have been modified so that the number of views purchased by larger Music Creators is not counted for the first 24 hours after a music video has been published. This pay-for-views rule comes as a shock to many Creators who work hard to have their channel views accrue organically. For more details on the new rules of RUclips videos, be sure and watch!

I remember back in 2005 when RUclips was starting, it was just about people uploading about what they were doing in their daily life, and have fun doing so. It was great being a RUclipsr then.
Now RUclips is all about money, which is quite sad.
I guess some of these new rules could be good, but I'm never gonna take the chance of uploading here again if it will lead to a 42,000$ fine.
This explains a lot... Like why I'm seeing music vids as ads and why we are seeing so many ads on RUclips... So basically ppl can pay for popularity even if what they are putting out isn't good.
Yep ... you get it. Thanks for your comment, Jenny!
Wow, this is interesting. I had no idea. Thanks for sharing this Ian. As always, your videos are very informative. Great job Ian.
Thanks Craig! So glad you watched.
You are like the Bill Nye of social media law! So happy I found you! You're informative and make what seems so daunting and complicated into something that is easily digestible. Thank you for your content, I Subscribe!
Oh no....now they will be making jokes about me, and kids will dress up at Halloween as me...😀. Thank you so much for watching Jugglekid and for responding. Much appreciated. I'm going to have to think more about your comments though. 😂😂
The internet was like the New World. Now, in the Americas, there are countries with rules and regulations. They're important, but people don't realise it until others take advantage of a lack of them.
Yes, James.
Hey! New camera and lens! Good choice. Great video detailing everything about the music industry. I can´t believe the most cited ones are from LATAM. What a surprise! One would expect Asia or other parts of the world would have the most views on those music videos...
Ha! Thank you very much!
I had no idea! Thank you for talking about it! I think creators should be able to advertise but I don’t think this should count as views. Basically they are buying views.
Thank you again. 👊😀
Congratulations RUclips, you are a large shilling corporation. As a PUBLISHER certain rules will cost you money (unless you bribe government officials).
Hey JRoar. Another case of big creators buying views.
Dirty YT! very interesting and well-explained topic!
Dirty ... dirty YT! Haha!
i'm amazed to see how youtube are getting away with this... PayPerViews is one thing but what about the other metrics? CTR / Tags / etc... Does the paid period affect thoses metrics too?
Hey Dave! No -- supposedly the Ads qualify in all categories as true FULL views -- the artists just can't use paid ads as an artist who got the most views in the first 24 hours after publication.
I agree with NoBrainer.. YT is basically like a street of shops.. The bigger companies have bigger ads.. But those big companies used to be small companies.. And nobody is giving up their hard earned top spot easy..
Amen!
*_I guess I'm blessed to suck at music, but I feel for those who this affects! Ian you are a lean mean (actually nice though) lawyer machine! Love your content, you always deliver such quality and interesting topics!_*
HA!!! Thanks for watching as usual!! AND thanks for the laugh. 😂😂
@@iancorzine So glad I made you chuckle Ian! Hope you're having an amazing week so far :)
I'm a small creator and don't have any problems with this change. Since we are in the capitalist society, so, pay-for-views by big creators should be fine with me due to voluntary exchange and competitive markets. Small creators just have to work really really hard to compete.
Hey Nancy! Well, I like that realistic attitude. It is true that "pay-to-play" is mostly how society runs itself -- however, to me that it is unfair to count a 2-second view of an Ad as a FULL view of the music video -- what do you think about that?
@@iancorzine I agree with everything @NoBrainer Languages
said in the comment. Thanks for the great content! You're a great heart lawyer. God bless!
I've done this before, but I thought of it as advertising I put my video infront of my target audience, I didn't really think I was buying views until I realised RUclips actually counted the ad views as legit views.
Hey Rochelle -- I mean, shoot, it's not really an indictment against RUclipsrs. It's more "Should YT perpetuate the buying of views?" They always preach organic traffic ...
@@iancorzine oh lol I have a channel about cats, so I targeted cat persons, I saw it in the RUclips creator academy about "Advertising your channel" so I just thought it make sense like marketing, that's how businesses get discovered through advertising so I just tried implementing the same strategy with my RUclips channel so I thought of it as organic too especially because I targeted cat people lol 😢 but guess I was wrong :/

you are correct. It's not fair. I'm a disabled veteran with PTSD and I don't have thousands of dollars for ads. Great video 💙🐝💙
As you know, a corporate charter says nothing about "right or wrong, moral behavior, fairness, or justice." It commands the business to make money and the only restrictions are the existing laws of the land. Thinking RUclips cares about most creators is an unrealistic expectation, and I wonder if pay for views (being paid to promote) could be interpreted as something a "platform" couldn't do and retain it's platform status. I also wondered, a couple of years ago, RUclips demonetized channels who qualified to be monetized back when 100 subscribers were all one needed to be monetized but failed to obtain 1,000 subscribers in the month YT allowed the creator to get to 1,000. It seems like that was a breach of the YT agreement with the creator and could be fertile grounds for a class action lawsuit.
Good thing I’m not a musician.
Hey Stormy! Ha! Never play with the Cantina Band?
I tried out, but didn’t make the cut, so I joined the imperial army instead. 🤷🏻♂️😉 Btw, I have something else being made as we speak for my channel (swag) and I should get the items next week. At that time, I’ll send something your way, that way I can harass you for a month to go and pick it up like I did last time!
I had no idea. Very interesting. You’re killing it, dad!!!!
Thanks honey for watching!
Wow
It’s absolutely unfair market practices
Yep!! 😢
I thought pay per view was like the TV channel, and youtube movies, so that all songs of any kind would require people to pay, and I'm like, having you MoFo's ever heard of Radio?!
There are two issues here. 1) The charts for 24 hour views simply shouldn't count the paid views, so RUclips's new policy is a good fix.
2) I think there's a bit of confusion regarding the shortened ads vs video views interpretation. In my understanding of how Google ads works, the ad has to be its own video on the RUclips channel -- so a shortened ad would be a different video on the channel to the full music video.
But in either case, a critical thing to note is that *views* aren't the most important thing for RUclips -- there are other factors like clickthrough rate and audience retention that are much more important. RUclips does track audience retention for ad plays differently than organic views (you can see this in your Studio Beta if you have any videos that are also ads).
So, if users only watch a shorter ad, that will actually send signals to RUclips that the user didn't watch the full video. It still may count as a view, but watching 30 seconds of a 3 minute music video isn't good retention.
Hey Subversiveasset! Thanks for watching. I agree the 24 hour charts should not count paid views. No -- under current RUclips rules, a view of a shortened ad counts as a full view of the music video. Yes, "views" are not everything BUT I think it's not fair to count a view of an ad -- an involuntary view -- as a FULL view.
@@iancorzine just wondering: have you run ads? Do you know what I mean when I talk about the audience retention for paid vs organic traffic? Just trying to gauge if you have that expertise or not.
A view is different is definitely different than audience retention. A "full view" doesn't meant 100% audience retention (for either organic or paid traffic). But noting that the view count will increment by 1 whether the audience watches 2% or 80% of a video isn't as big of a deal -- RUclips implemented watch time and retention as a preferred metric over views years ago precisely to address the matters of clickbait thumbnails, so the same defense applies with paid views of shortened ads.
@@subversiveasset Of course. I spend half my week working on how to make audiences stay longer in a view session - organically -- by striving to give more value, make better videos. We're way beyond "audience retention" in this discussion. We're talking about Google / RUclips allowing people to PAY for views, regardless of their value with the algorithm. I gather your point is -- no big deal because views don't really elevate people, but they do bro in a BIG way when we're talking 75 million views in 24 hours. Also, this discussion raises the question about the future of RUclips -- will pay-to-play be the general rule???
@@subversiveasset Thank YOU for elevating the discussion -- I want more comments like yours 👊🏼😃
@@iancorzine since we know audience retention matters more than view count, pay-to-play is only effective if people are watching most of the content. If the music videos are interesting enough that people will watch the entire video from an ad (when they have the option to click out after 5 seconds for skippable ads), more power to the advertisers.
But for most people, pay-to-play is neither desirable or all that efficient as they aren't creating videos that people are drawn to watching all the way through. If someone struggles to generate high retention from organic traffic, paid traffic won't help. In fact, the price of paid traffic is probably not worth the cost of the lower audience retention from the people who do skip the ads. Having 1 million views and only 5 second watch time (just the amount of time it takes before the skip option is available) is not going to help a video's long-term performance.
Great infotainment, what is your camera kit. Looks sharp!
Hey Fred! Thanks for watching -- started using the Canon EOS R more!
Ad views shouldn't count at all. Ads that are clicked through - no matter where from - SHOULD count.
Hey PP. Thanks.
I do feel frustrated like my social media lawyer !Always great stuff !
Ha! Thanks Eli for visiting us!
All these new TOS changes right after the 10th of December, you might be inclined to think RUclips is going full on CORPORATE or something.
Hmmm......🤔
How... how has this video not gotten more views? This is pretty big and I pretty much slept by it.
Yea, there's a small-ish Y/T channel that I'm subscribed to, that's practically dedicated to calling out other content creators that blatantly buy their views.
Not only do these so-called "creators" buy their views, they also steal content that has been made by the real McCoy (AKA you & me), & present it as their own original ideas (plagiarism), & yet, Y/T themselves don't do Jack Schitt about it. If anything, it's these types that are the ones that gain the spotlight.
I totally understand the frustration. It's not fair and yet YT does nothing about it. There are some big changes going on at YT and come 1/1/20 it may no longer exist. Keeps your eyes open for what is coming. 😬
Everyday there is a new YT change.. I make original music on my channel but I have a super small channel.. does this affect me?
Hey Rayna! Well, the way it affects you is that LESS people get to see / listen to your music. BIG artists are paying money to obtain short-cut views of their music videos -- taking viewers time away from perhaps exploring your music. Thanks for watching!
Ian Corzine Perfectly explained. Those with financial backing will always have more opportunities - but at what cost. Can’t be great karma not playing fair, kinda like cheating to get ahead. At least we can appreciate those who don’t force others to watch their vids or listen to their music by paying RUclips to force feed it to everyone..
Thank you for so many super helpful videos!

Let me tell you you are great with messing with people's emotions. For someone that says monetization is going away you sure do work alot. Actually I'm pretty impressed with the true view aspect of RUclips I didn't know that and I think it will be something I use with my channel going forward. It will allow me to target videos that I know will help my clients do better. Now stop scaring the world and do a good video about true view.
👍😀
Hi, Ian. With all this talk about RUclips music, I often upload videos from my phone, and I would find a music symbol 🎵 to the top left. Does that mean it gives me access to the RUclips Audio Library.
Hey Emily. You can only access the Audio Library from the desktop.

Surprised the loophole ever existed. My personal opinion I think in the long run the loophole is going to leave a bad taste in the mouth of a lot of creators in general not, just the smaller operators.
When I 1st heard you mention the old rule I thought you were pulling our leg. The 'X' paralegal in me was actually quite shocked YT would even let something like that fly. Sounded more like something the music industry would have relished getting away with until they were 'caught' or had their hands slapped. Who remembers 'Disneygate'? In another ironic twist it also sounds like what some visiting families of disabled children, used to do when they went to Disneyland. They would pay for others to stand in line FOR them, then pop up at the last minute to 'claim' their place at the front of the line w/o ever having stood in line at all. Whether we are talking about pay to play, pay per view, or pay to enter (establishments) it all amounts to unfairness to those who legitimately put in the time to create. Best of luck to creators everywhere.
Awesome video Mr. Ian Corizne first off you re right with everything though and about views my videos arent getting that much views though and no way i m paying unfair staff like views or subs no way i been told to do so but no and that website i never heard of told me buy subs and views and after a lone deep thinking in my mind i decided no you see sir since my childhood i always i believe earning my ways and never cheat though that my own opinion though thanks to God i wont do such a thing in my life though and amazing video sir, cheers.

im really sorry im not fully understanding
does this have any effect on gaming channels like me
im not a music creator and im not sure what does that will do with me
Hey Michael -- yeah, I had difficulty explaining it. Basically, you can buy ads that counts for full views of your video. YT used to count these "ad views" when it calculated who was dominating the music charts in the first 24 hours after their video was published. Now, they don't -- the larger question is whether YT should perpetuate pay-to-play in their ecosystem.
If only Clicked music ads count as their views only. I let my computer with yt on while cooking dinner and ads run freely because I was busy cooking, but it doesn't mean I watched those ads.
I think most of us tune them out anyhow. Thanks for watching. 👊😀
I'll keep watching sir. Awesome that you replied

I know a few music artists whom I follow on YT. There is an amazing composer, I love his content. He has grown organically. I fear this rule might debilitate his success every time he puts out a new composition.
Yeah, I know ... me too.
this is an example of why to keep adblockers on at all times, if I have to disable an adblocker to do something, then it ain't worth doing
PayPerViews is to RUclips as Pay-to-Win is to online multiplayer games.
Very informative
Hey Lola! Thank you -- it was kind of a hard topic to explain -- I am glad you got something out of it!
RUclips needs some fierce competitors. Is RUclips an online video monopoly?
Nice tie, Ian!
I definitely wouldn't pay for views unless I was specifically considering it as advertising. Otherwise, paying for views would be just like paying for likes, follows, etc, on any social network. Depending on the video, paying for views can be good, but also could be not good.
Who really has money to pay for views??? Most people have even shared that their paid advertising did nothing as well. It's like throwing your money away. Sadly. 😢
Paying for video views online is just like paying to air a commercial on TV.
TV, plenty have been muting commercials since the invention of mute integrated into TVs. Or, people use that time to, well... - and there's also DVRs with the ability to fast forward over the commercials.
Online video, depending on the programming where the video is... there's that 'skip' button. I admit it, I use it daily. However, video ads, on such platforms as RUclips, need to be done better. Instead of interrupting a video with a video ad, have a video category for ads/commercials so people can watch them if they choose to. Stick with the banner ads that appear while watching a video.
Consider... why do companies blow millions of dollars to have their commercial aired during the super bowl? STUPID! Although some of those ads are fun to watch and/or funny. The ones that actually advertise something ... fine, advertise ... but don't waste so much money doing it when you don't have to!
Question... why do you 'like' your own comments and comment replies? It really doesn't do anything. It's the same as liking your own posts/uploads.
Brian Joslyn hey Leonardrose_pro on IG fixed up my suspended channel
Why are you telling me?
You should have Rick Beato on your show to discuss his issues that he has been having with this fair use problem. He is a fantastic creator and his channel is exceptional for musicians of all genres regarding learning their instruments and learning music.
Hi. I just want to ask something. I hope you can help me. I made a video intro on a site but they gave me a free low quality video and has a watermark on it. What if I edited it? Like crop the video just to remove the watermark and change the original audio with my own audio. Am I going to deal a copyright strike on that action?
I don't know if you will get a copyright strike but this does sound like copyright infringement -- so, you could get sued.
Thank you so much for your advise. 😊
To be honest I kinda saw this coming but yeah its gonna make it tricky for music creators
Absolutely David!! Creators are going to have to step it. Thanks for watching. 👊😀
I thought it was already a thing. I didn't realize RUclips didn't have paid advertisements like other social medias.
I have a question. So I make videos. I added music to them. They had RUclips license. I didn’t get copyright. I’m scared if I make edits on a different device that I might get copyright. What does having RUclips licence do? And why does it only sometimes pop up on some videos and not others?
So is that not cheating the system because big companies can pay to view but we as small creators must follow other rules? sorry I disagree with pay to view but one solution is if the person clicks the video and actually watches the whole video then that could count as a view but not the ad or few seconds of the video. Thats if they want to keep that policy. I may not be in music but big companies should follow the same rules as small creators and not live double standard. Mine I choose to grow organically and thanks for the info @ian
Hey AC -- I could get behind this. Thank you for watching!

Why should artist pay for their own music on the content of their videos. This is getting bad. Us small tuber will not have a chance to grow on our channel when You Tube keep coming up with their vague rules The creative commons music are free to put on our videos to have in our content. Ian , it is not fair. Yes the artist have the right to present their music ,but get charge to pay for their own music to play on You Tube. What is not fair that the music creator get views on their ads along with their content. First demonetization of the content of the video. Now the artist have to pay for their music to be viewed by the viewers. What it is that You Tube lost a lot of money to FTC being sued of $ 170,millon . Any one who is making a lot of money on their content of their video will be the target of paying You Tube . This is what is happening now. They will falsely accuse video creator who makes a lot of money for violating the You Tube rules . They are making it so we are discourage to upload our videos in fear of violating the FTC COPPA and CCPA law. You Tube platform is the worse website I ever known on the internet. I do not see other social media out side of Google having these unfair hurtful destroying rules. The FTC COPPA You Tube is a lowing us to break the Federal law then turn around for accusing us falsely video creator for violating the law .
