You did a good job! I am a self employed gardener and I wish I could have come out there and done it for you x. Next time ( if there's going to be a next time!) don't dig into the earth where you don't really need to. Weeds have very shallow roots but if you dig into the soil, you have a tendency to bring even more weed seeds to the surface and create a bigger job of trying to get rid of them in the future. By not digging you create a healthier soil structure. Nurture your soil, be gentle with it and it will reward you later on in the year xx

Weed pulling goes really well when the ground is moist. So satisfying. And the roots are more likely to come out in tact.
Start small and with what you enjoy. I love mixing flowers with veggies. Your honesty is refreshing. Be true to yourself.

Thanks! Yes it was relatively easy to pull them out except from the deeper ones that grew from under the sides of the bed (under the boards 😫)

Well the cardboard’s for the no-dig-method. Removing anything underneath isn’t necessary. You can add compost/soil on top of the cardboard later to create a new bed since the paper will decompose. You’ll figure this out, don’t worry! Much love ❤️

Marloes - you are doing really well. Something that we’re not sure about, we can get ourselves into knots about. And it makes it a stressful thing. I feel at times exactly the same way. But you got out there and did it, even if it wasn’t feeling natural. You’re doing great. It’s an investment for when everything will be in full bloom again. You made good decisions. I’m a professional gardener and I’m not going to pretend I know everything about it. You’ll make mistakes and through trail and error find the way that suits you. Your garden is beautiful. It really is lovely. The Zinnias will look fantastic. Just as a bit of advice, don’t plant the seeds too late, they need the time. If you ever want to ask me any questions, you’re welcome to.

Thank you so much for all these words of encouragement and wisdom! Actually last year I sowed early April and indeed it took a very long time. I am going to recommend the u tube channels Garden Answer. I live in Florida so my garden zone I’m unable to grow flowers and veges that’s I’d really like to but I’ve learned what I can and can’t grow. Cardboard yes you can use without ink. Mulch is the bag mulch from the garden center not garden clippings. Your tubers you pulled up can be put in cold storage but I’d suggest you use bulbs you can just leave over winter in the ground like tulips. I’d relax about it and pick say 2 flowers to learn about and master it then add. It’s like my dad and his art I tell him the heck with the rules create your art so have your garden don’t compare your garden to what others say your garden should or shouldn’t it’s about your joy have fun with it. But in a bird bath in the middle made of dishes and have pots around it with flowers and pretty stones painted like the nondenominational church. Why not?

Good luck ❤That system worked well for me …. Im a gardener in wales and have put cardboard down many times with manure/ compost/ mulch in a deep layer over the top ….when I planted my clumps of perennials back in be mindful not the let any weeds in the crown of the plant get missed … A few creepers like creeping buttercup hides amongst the crown of the plants and before you realise they have creeped all across your bed again….
It’s a nice opportunity to split your plants and make large drifts…
I try and weed a little and often as I’ve learned the hard way 😂❤

Marloes- I love your honesty! You feel about gardening the way I feel about sourdough starter 😂! I am on my 5th attempt at sourdough starter… give me a garden to weed and plant any day! One thing about gardening is that there is an ebb and flow. Like farming - every year is different and that means plants are affected differently. Just like you had to learn new thing about publishing your cookbook (which I love btw), you will learn new things about gardening. It may not come naturally yet, but perseverance will produce long term results and satisfaction! OR perhaps a neighbor feels like I do about sourdough bread and would gladly trade garden work for daily bread 😁 I look forward to seeing how this turns out.

What a beautiful, insightful and giving person you are! What you said is exactly on the mark. Farms in the countryside know the best harvest die the next year, is to absolutely plant different plants. That said, Marloes, I would have loved to help you there!! Don’t be so hard on yourself! I would dig and replant those flowers elsewhere on the farm, and then plant whatever you love according to the zone you live in. The flowers you dug up with the bulbs and the roots , definitely dry in the dark in the barn or else where’s, leaving a bit of soil attached , and then plant in the spring, like tulips. Well done with what you’ve accomplished! You will get it all in no time❤

I could really feel for you. It’s not easy . But the rewards are great. I am a floral designer. My daughter is your age and is my partner in our business. When the pandemic came we could see that there would be no flowers available or customers. We decided to both clear places on our property and grow flowers in the hope that we would have them when they became so scarce. I soon discovered that I love creating with flowers but growing them from seed ,weeding , feeding was not easy. We are sustainable florists so it is important to always when we can source our flowers locally and forage as well. I gained a whole new respect for the flower farmers! Your doing fine. The cardboard is great for weed control . Do your research, I know you are excellent at that. Dahlia tubers are work to dig up but oh my what beauty they create in the garden, pick a few simple easy ones to grow. Zinnias , cosmos , snapdragons, dahlias. There is nothing like a vase filled with white cosmos dancing in a gentle breeze. Can’t wait to see your garden this summer !

Dear Marloes, I happen to love gardening, but easy gardening. Find what grows on its own and naturally that is what doesn’t need much work. Dahlia’s are next level, if you don’t love intens gardening, look for easy flowers. And we all know that the video’s of beautiful dahlia gardens would not posted if the result was a disapointment…. Don’t be fooled, a lot of people struggle with dahlia’s. Look around in your garden and town, there must be lots of plants and flowers that you like, learn about those plants and plant the ones who need little maintenence.❤

Happy New Year Marloes! We did alot of flower gardens too and we ended up resorting to Perennial bushes. They are less maintenance and they normally will fill out the area and you won't get so much weeds. This has worked for us as I've done the same with planting dahlias etc..... and found perennials are way less maintenance. You're doing a great job! Gardening is all about patience! (:

Just cover the beds with strong plastic and then on top with small stones. You love buying containers so why not buy them for your flowers that way you can plant your flowers and make the containers their new home in the garden. Have a look at u tube how to plant just using containers. I feel this way you will use less water in the hot summers to.😍

Thanks! I have pots with plants all over the garden elsewhere and they actually need more water in my experience than the plants and flowers that are in the ground. Also I try to cover the hatches from our septic tank and that is easier when growing flowers around. I personally do not like the obvious "pot with flowers on the hatch" that you see everywhere here which only makes it stand out more in my opinion. But thanks for sharing your ideas, appreciate that!

I have heard that some people remove the ink from cardboard to reduce chemicals etc, but it seems that it is extremely common in no dig vegetable gardens and chemicals are usually not a concern. Something I have learned is that if you remove something from the ground(namely weeds or any plant), then you must assume that if you don't replace that thing, then something else will grow in it's place. So you either need to cover the ground with mulch(compost or wood chips are a good option) or cardboard with mulch on top or you need to plant something directly where you removed the weeds. It might not be necessary for you to remove the dahlia tubers from your garden. You can google what zone you are in(even though you are in Europe, the information is sometimes available), I think in zone 8 you can get away with piling extra mulch on your dahlias to provide protection from extra cold weather. It's a risk I suppose, but maybe a risk you are willing to take.

    • @FrenchCountryLife
      @FrenchCountryLife  8 месяцев назад

Thanks for the advice! My neighbor is a very experienced and successful gardener and she told me to remove the dahlias and plant them again in spring.

@@FrenchCountryLife I live in the Netherlands in a zone 8 area and I have seen lots of UK gardeners removing dahlias and replanting in spring, but equally I have seen quite a few who choose not to. As I say, it's a small risk that an extremely cold winter might kill some or all of them, for some gardeners who don't like the extra work, it is a risk they are willing to take.

I share how you feel about the kind of "grubby" gardening chores you did today. My gardening fantasy is wearing a pretty, big brimmed hat while I leisurely plant, prune and gather. The reality is that I'm usually sweating in our hot, humid climate while I chisel out a planting hole in the dense clay and amend it, constantly swat gnats and mosquitoes, get bitten by fire ants and battle a multitude of pests that attack my plants. However, when I do experience success, I don't think about those things. I suppose that gardening is just another one of the things in life from which we have to accept the bitter to obtain the sweet. I've done the cardboard trick you did today and it worked very well. You're going to be happy when you start planting in the weed free area. Just put a layer of soil on top of the decomposing cardboard and dig holes for planting right through the cardboard.

But if u planted some perennials (they come back yr after yr) u would feel successful. Get those leaves back, cut them up with lawnmower. Throw them over the cardboard. Let sit this year. Not as pretty as the flowers but an easy productive thought. Maybe even other areas that you get tired of maintaining. Well done.

I learned gardening at a very young age and thru the years kept learning more by experience, trial and error, long before RUclips. I learned to plant easy care flowers that last for years like roses and flowering shrubs and flowers that reseed themselves and pop up every spring, like nasturtiums etc. Tuck some easy ferns in shady corners too for your flower arrangements. That way you can focus on the things you really love
Dahlias tho gorgeous, are NOT an easy care flower, nor is any bulb that has to be lifted and stored every year and then replanted.

Good job on finishing your goal for the flower bed. I have learned that it takes years to have cardboard disintegrate, and for me, it is more trouble than its worth, but I do hope it works for you. I have found that the roofing material works best for weed suppression...I completed a 20' x 10' bed with roofing material (black heavy "paper"), and no weeds can penetrate through that material. Good luck in finding what works best for your yard. I look forward to watching your garden grow with lots of flowers.

I went back and forth about cardboard for my new raised beds and made the same decision as you. I'm going to try composting using a food safe pail with holes drilled in it and composting worms to fill with kitchen scraps (no meat or dairy). Don't give any of your leaves away next year - it looks like a lot when they first fall, but they compost down pretty quickly, and I read that you should put them about a foot around beds to help keep weeds out of the beds. That and plant things closely together. And those are all the tips I am/will be trying :)

Pull out obvious weeds, leave everything else and put the card board on and weight it down. Be done till spring. All good things (flowers) come with a little work. It's just you have to make less work for yourself. Make the sides of your beds at least a foot tall. Weeds can't creep in as easily. You will like it when it's less work.

Thanks for this! The weeds grow from underneath the sides of the beds… but I did think of making better boxes to prevent that.

Hi Marloes, I'm 79 yrs old and still enjoy gardening but remember, everything you do in life is trial and error. It took me ages to learn how to garden. Mow down the area to the ground, then cover with cardboard. Wet the cardboard, then cover with a few inches, 3-4" of good quality compost mixed with perlite that holds water and then sprinkle randomly with a packet or two of mixed country flowers. Water it in lightly and keep moist until they all germinate. You will have a garden bed full of flowers. Good luck.

Why not find a person in your area who lives gardening, tell them what you'd like to see in your garden? Then let them do your garden, you are an awesome cook - offer to swap favours: you cook or bake fir them, they plant and maintain your garden? I am a professional musician and artist. I live a pretty garden, but do not enjoy gardening! So, I swap art pieces I create with someone who l8ves to garden. I buy the suggested plants, compost, mulch, woodchips, and she uses them in my garden. She, in turn, brings me interesting subject matter and things fir upcoming, and I create decor fir her to use in her house, or gift to others. It works!

I wish I could have been there to help you! You could make it easier on yourself to just plant the zinnia and cosmos seeds every spring. That way you can clean the bed out in the late fall, put some compost and leaves on top and wait until next spring. You would not have to worry about deep roots with those flowers. The dahlias seem to be causing you anxiety. Find another spot to plant some dahlias like up against the house somewhere. Just let them bloom and forget them. If they freeze, you can plant a few more the next year. If something is causing you anxiety, it's not worth the stress! I live in eastern North Carolina in the U.S. I absolutely LOVE roses; however, I struggle with growing them for various reasons. Therefore, I have just a couple, and if they don't work out, I will just move on. If gardening is not a pleasure, it's not worth it. We cannot be masters at everything we try. I think you will find that by being selective, you will find a sweet spot with your garden. Finding the joyful place is key. I wish you the best in every way!
You have gorgeous hydrangeas! Be proud of that. In my opinion, they're the loveliest flowers of all. Cindy A.

      @FrenchCountryLife  8 месяцев назад

Thank you so much! Yes I kind of already decided to do exactly that. Clean and cover in fall and sow only zinnias and cosmos as they are the easiest to grow.

Yes it is great to be honest and it's reassuring to other France-living viewers you are tackling the same issues as me. I also hate weeding. I also find some plants or beds don't look as good as they could. I have the additional challenge of deer eating my plants.
OK, so a couple of bits of advice : 1. wear rubber bootees.
    2. Use a fork to get the weeds out - either a little fork or a large one.
    3. If you watch other vegetable gardeners, they also don't have all the answers so what they do is call a given bed an 'experimental bed' or 'trial bed' acknowledging that it could work or might be sub-optimal.
Good vibes from me. Keep going. You are doing great. Record what works!

Thanks! Oh I love that thought. My entire garden is a trial garden then! 😂 And yes rubber boots would be perfect but I have never been able to find ones that fit and that I can actually walk on! I have large but very skinny feet, it truly is an unbelievable challenge… so far I use these kinds of boots but they’re not ideal when it is really muddy…

Good (for me) to hear you have a gardening rant, as it reassures me you’re not perfect, who would want that 🤣. Gardening can be as hit and miss as you like, really. Here in NZ we just leave the dahlias in the ground unless wanting to move some, as the ground isn’t usually wet enough in winter to rot them. I’m sure your garden will turn out just fine in summer 🏵🌻🌼🌷

    Happy new year 🎉
In the end you did a good job there!! If you placed well rotted horse manure over the cardboard it would rot down for the spring ready for you planting.
Btw, branches and twigs are not mulch, just well rotted material like manure or leaves or rotted veg waste .

And the horse manure provides great worms for the soil. I've also found that wetting down the cardboard before applying any mulch on top helps it break down faster. All good permaculture principles.

I can relate so much to what you are saying about gardening. I feel clumsy and insecure, because of a luck of experience.
It's just something else, reading/watching RUclips about it and doing it. So I guess, I just have to try. Then there is this curious neighbour - and I certainly don't want to be watched and getting comments🤯.
I think you just could use cardboard as mulching material. I think Charles Dowding does it like this.
You could make a special leaf compost, which I already experienced, produces wonderful compost.
Thank you for being refreshingly honesty. I felt relieved, knowing I am not the only one, who feels like that.😂
