- Bonjour!
I am finally sharing a new update on the kitchen build of our French farmhouse we've been renovating since 2019. These things are always so much slower than you would want but I am so happy with the progress we're making.
In this video I am working a project that I am so excited about. It truly is a dream come true for my kitchen design!!
Hope you like this one. Thanks so much for being here! It really means a lot to me!
Love,
Marloes

I have stripped a lot of doors in Australia, if your chemical product is like ours,we put plastic kitchen wrap on it (that keeps moisture in and leave it on for hours not 15min, it will start bubbling up . After you remove most of it use fine steel wool with the grain. I also tape off the glass before hand so I dont scratch the glass.
Thanks for sharing! It specifically said to leave it on for 15 minutes only. I wasn't sure if it would damage the wood if I left it on longer? I used steel wool too in the last bits but overall just not convinced this method is for me...
Great tips thanks!
The doors are beautiful. In English, it is called "hardware", the door knob that is used to open and close the door. You have got to be so excited with the progress. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Yes that’s the word! I was so exhausted I couldn’t think of the right word! Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!
Your kitchen is coming together beautifully. I love your ideas about the cabinetry. I think I would be in your kitchen always when it is finished. Absolutely beautiful!
I hope I will too ☺️ Thanks for your support!
Love the doors. When they are all done. You will always love them and know you did the work.
Hey Penny 🌹🥀 🌹
Marry Christmas 🌹
How are you doing??
I love your vlogs, I am a Canadian on the West coast and visited Burgundy a few years ago and fell in love with the area. I could easily up sticks and relocate there. I love watching the vision come to life....your vision is lovely. Cheers Kellie
Thank you!
The doors are wonderful. Good find.
Happy Holidays 🎄
PS
If you shrink wrap the doors after applying the chemical it usually makes the stripper work better.
Thanks for sharing that advice!
I bought whats called a Rotary tool, you can put tiny sanding sheets on the end and get in small spaces with it. I have just used it on the crease on my banister and it worked really well. You have to order the the tiny ring sanding sheets as you get through quite a lot. I also used it for sanding one of my chairs with lots of detail on the wood. It comes with lots of attachment for things like metal as well. They will look lovely when they are done, but are a labour of love to get there. Good luck
Thanks!
It's important to keep in mind the outcome. And you sound like you have that down. So we will enjoy being with you and the others will you make your dream kitchen come to life. Happy Holidays✨
Thank you so much! Happy holidays to you too!
Those doors with glass will look awesome. The hutch will be a cozy addition!
Thanks! I sure hope so!
It will look amazing as always. With your natural flair & creativity & your magical touch. It will be beautiful & one of a kind. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas filled with love, laughter & abundance, throughout the coming year. 😊❤
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you too!
Your kitchen will be a labor of love when it is finished ❤ It is going to be beautiful. I really enjoy watching your progress. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your support!
Chateau du Purnon's latest vlog is about lead paint removal. They're removing paint from walls but maybe the technique and/or product could be modified in some way for smaller applications. Back in the day I removed paint using a propane torch and scraped the melted paint off.
Thanks! Oooh that method sounds messy but I'm quite sure pretty effective. I've used my heat gun on other projects and it really works so good!
Your kitchen and bedroom will be beautiful. Love the doors you had and also the new ones with the glass. Can't wait to see how everything progresses. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks!
Beautiful song to go with the beautiful countryside
Those windows are a real find. It’s great to see your mood board coming together… I know the paint stripping chemicals can be toxic but your up cycling those windows so there’s still balance with the planet 🌍 😂 have a great weekend
Thanks! I hadn't looked at it that way. But still... too disappointed in its effect so will not be using it again. I'll stick to my sanding machine. Since the paint was so old the machine actually got some of the paint of the moldings off. Never seen that before so it was a pleasant surprise!
Like you, it is hard for me to wait. I’m trying to be patient. Your place is already so full of charm. It will be gorgeous when complete! You both are very inspiring!!!
Thanks! Yes, I've had this kitchen in my head since we bought the house in 2018. It was all about the kitchen for me really. I just want that warm family kitchen where we'll spend hours cooking and baking and chatting and where I can invite friends and family. Can't tell you how excited I am we are finally working on it after creating two other spaces (cottage and cabin) and doing so many technical and other works (septic tank, electricity, garden redo, swimming pool, parking, roof, creating chimneys for the future fire places etc etc) that needed to be done but had nothing to do with the kitchen :) It took a lot of patience... and it still does. But we're finally getting there!
I love the doors, especially the hardware for opening and closing them. I’d like to suggest that if you do put that hutch over your countertop next to your stove, maybe you want glass doors for that also? They will keep the smoke and grease from cooking depositing on your dishes. Just an idea! 🤷♀️😄
Thanks for the suggestion!
Try a heat gun initially to get off layers of paint…unless it is lead then maybe you can’t…beautiful home! Thank you for sharing. Happy Christmas
Thanks! I have used a heat gun on all my other projects before and it’s much more effective. Just need to wear protection, always, not just with lead paint. I was just a little worried for the glass. Anyway, will definitely do heat gun again for the other 4 doors I need to do for the bedroom wardrobe
I’m in love with your channel! Please keep going, show us this simple and beautiful countryside life in France
With love from Russia ❤🇷🇺
Thank you!
Loved the drive through the village and vineyards. 😊😊
I too just received your book. Couldn’t put it down. ❤❤. Christmas Blessings to you dear lady and your family.
Oh I’m so happy to hear you like it! Enjoy! Merry Christmas to you too!
To quickly remove old paint from flat surfaces carpenters and restorers use a metal scraper (which is tightly held in a slightly curved manner ) the scraper is pulled towards you and the old paint is flicked up.no chemicals are needed, sometimes curved shaped scrapers that match the moulding can be found .
Thanks for sharing. Yes I used that tool when I stripped the other doors we have in the house. Very effective indeed! I didn't know there were curved ones for moulding and don't really see how that would follow all the different details? It's not just one half round, it has two other little details lengthwise, you would need a special shaped one I guess?
Wishing you and your family comfort and joy. 🤗❤️🌈🙏🕊️⛄
Thanks!
Everything is coming along so beautifully. You both are very talented. Love all the details. Thanks for sharing your vision.
Thanks!
I just received your book, and it's even more beautiful than I imagined.
Oh thank you! I’m so happy to hear that!
The doors and hutch are beautiful Marloes...wonderful find! The material / chemical you used to lift the paint we call a stripper. It actually works quite well. I think because of the age of the paint on the door, it had been absorbed deeply in to the wood, so there was very little for the stripper to lift..cause that's what it does lift the paint so you can scrape it off. With antiques it mostly works if there are layers of paint..it will lift the top ones making it easier to get to the wood underneath. Also if professionally done, they submerge it into a bath of this chemical to lift what they can, before doing the manual refinishing. Such a great job you and Olaf are doing! Merry Christmas to you and your family!❤
Thank you for explaining this. Yes that makes a lot of sense! Merry Christmas to you too!
I used that too. I didn’t really like when they ‘dipped’ the furniture tho. It was definitely less work but I felt it weakened the wood and joints. 😊
@@kathyeyesopen4078 It depends on who is doing the work and what pieces you dip.🙃
I now have my dream kitchen as well🥰🥰🥰
it looks so great, cozy and homey already, chapeau to the two of you!!
Thank you!
You both are incredible people with great style. Congrats on nearly 50 000 subs! A better non-chemical way of removing paint/rust and maintaining the antique look is to use a gentle blast medium like ground up walnut or clam shells. You can get a non industrial blaster. You can use it on so many things.
Can't wait to visit your property.
I just received your book…it is wonderful! I feel transported to France! Thank you for following your dream! ❤
So happy to hear you like it! Thanks!
Just so lovely and homey...the way you want your home and kitchen to be. I've seen Cremona locks b4 in french architecture books. Apparently they were from the 18th century...originally designed in Cremona, Italy. I find them extremely handsome...surface mount rods intricately shaped as part of the lock itself. Fascinating. Happy Holidays and continued good luck on this project.
Thank you so much! Happy holidays to you too!
Love your new finds for the kitchen! Great shelf unit and I can see it all coming together! Cheers!
Merci
O Marlies but afterwards you have such a wonderfull origenal house. Lovely!
Thank you!
It's looking wonderful.😊
Thanks
Your ideas are beautiful. I used to love the hunt to find something I’d been dreaming of at a second hand store or auction or house sale. My first house after we were married (51 years ago!) was completely furnished and decorated with my finds, sometimes even from the trash! I would refinish, paint, repair to exactly how I wanted it. I can’t do any of it now but I love to watch what you do and it takes me back. Your kitchen will be beautiful❤❤❤
Thanks! Yes I enjoy doing that too! It makes the house so personal and knowing you've done it all with your own two hands is so rewarding!
Très bonnes idées merci pour cette vidéo à bientôt
Great ideas! There are many different kinds of paint strippers. While lead paint is dangerous, it did adhere well. We don't really have a different word for the cremone bolt because they aren't that common in the US.
Thanks for sharing that info!
I received your book yesterday! It is so thoughtfully put together and your images are just beautiful! I'm reading it front to back cover, page by page, so I have a ways to go.
Thanks! I am so happy to hear you're enjoying it!
I just stripped a wartime trunk and had a heck of a time getting the finished off. One side had something different than the other 3. My niece told me to use “regular spray on oven cleaner” and I must say, it worked a great. If that product is available where you are, I suggest giving it a try.
Thanks for sharing that!
Love those doors! Things are looking good in your build
Thank you!
I just received my copy of your book and it is Wonderful! I’m thinking of making the raspberry clafoutis and had to look up what ‘ramequins’ are 😅. So excited to go thru every page & every recipe❤❤❤
It’s going to be so beautiful when you are finished! So excited for you and excited for us to be able to watch. I received your book this week, on Wednesday. It is truly a work of art. I quickly went through it, looking at all of the pictures, and then went to the beginning to read each page from front to back. I am about half way done, as I want to take my time. All of the love and care you put into the book project is so clear to see. Much love to you and your family this holiday season from Southern Nevada, USA; looking forward to all things coming up on your channel! ❤🎄🥂🚪🇺🇸🇫🇷🇳🇱
Thank you so much! Happy to hear you enjoy it!
Just received your book ! We’re having storms this weekend so I’ll have plenty of time to read it!
Oh that's wonderful news! Hope you'll enjoy it with a nice cup of coffee, cozy in your home while its's stormy outside! Thanks for the support!
It’s gonna be beautiful because your husband is very skillful as well as you happy holidays❤
Thanks! Yes I wouldn't know how we could do all this without him! Happy holidays to you too!
It looks wonderful. It will be great to see the final result!
Thanks!
Good luck with your kitchen. Things are looking great so far.
Thank you so much!
This will be awesome when be finished. I received your book this week, is so beautiful, you can see so much love put on it! I'll try one of the recipes today😊❤
Thank you! Oh I'm happy it's finally arrived! Happy cooking!
I received your book in the post yesterday!!! It is wonderful. Congrats to you. May you have a very Merry Christmas❤
Thank you so much! Glad you hear you like it. Merry Christmas to you too!
So excited about your kitchen and bedroom!

Great progress. Looking forward to seeing it develop.
Me too! Thanks for the support!
You and Olaf are making a beautiful job of it Marloes. I love the style and the character you are including. Keep going !
Thank you!
I love your sense of style. Can't wait to see the finished kitchen.
Neither can I as you can imagine after dreaming about this for nearly 5 years! We started our renovations early 2019 and I've had this kitchen in my head ever since. Slowly but surely!
I've seen people who renovate wooden furniture doors etc use metal dental picks to remove paint from the moe detailed areas.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you for such a wonderful series of content.
Thank you, to you too!
Beautiful work and your house is gorgeous
Thank you!
Hang in there all your hard work will pay off in the end it will be beautiful! Merry Christmas to you and your family ⛄🎄🎁
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too!
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you
Your kitchen is going to be amazing when your done. All things take time, when your done it will be exactly what you want. I love the stone and hope you keep it in your design.
Thanks! Yes all the exposed stone walls will stay that way. We put a lot of work in (you can't just leave them like that but you have to clean and repoint them) so we're happy to have such a beautiful feature in the kitchen!
It’s gonna be gorgeous. I love that you are leaving the doors natural.
Thanks! Yes I really like that style and I hope it will bring warmth to the kitchen now that we'll have darker floor tiles and the cabinets will be painted and the countertop will be marble. We'll see. Cross my fingers!
It will look amazing!! 🎄

Love the hutch on counter idea - I plan to "steal" the idea when I find my own French farmhouse!
Sure!
Oh I love your ideas for your kitchen & the cabinet with the glass doors Marloes. It’s going to look wonderful ☺️
I can't wait to see it come to life! Thanks for your support!
My copy of your cookbook was delivered yesterday. The cover, paper, and pictures are beautiful. I will try the recipes soon!
Thank you so much! I am happy to hear you like it! Enjoy!
I've had to leave the paint stripper chemical on for about an hour, not 15 minutes on older wood that had dried for so many years. If it looks like the chemical liquid is dry too fast cover it with cling plastic like Saran Wrap, etc. so it doesn't get the air.
Hey Colleen 🌹🥀 🌹

So exciting to see the progress in your bedroom and kitchen! I love the exposed ceiling beams upstairs; they give the room so much character just like the window cabinet doors will in the kitchen. Sanding those windows is certainly a labor of love! I wanted to let you know that your cookbook arrived yesterday. Marloes, it is so beautiful even more so than I had imagined. I am so happy to have it and look forward to trying some recipes over the holidays! Merci beaucoup!

How are you doing??
The work that you're doing blows my mind! And the fact that you're going to have this amazing kitchen that you've built from scratch just to your liking is incredible. You should be so proud. I would suggest as I've done in the past. And yes, I did use the chemicals, hear their called circuit 1867 I think, anyway, there was a little bit of paint left and I wanted two different things to match so I actually painted one of them with the matching color, left it and then sanded it so they would both look weathered. Best of luck! Love your vlogs
Thanks! Yes I was actually thinking the same thing but maybe I’ll leave it. I kind of like it being original and it will remind me of the fact that these windows were made for a family home over a hundred years ago and as there was only one coat of paint, knowing that that family in a village close to where I live, decided to paint them this beautiful blue color. There’s a history to it and I kind of like honoring that by keeping that tiny reminder.
Amazing all the work you have been doing. In the future, could you show us how the French people decorate their homes for Christmas? Love your channel. Thank you for all that you share. ❤
Thanks! As it is in every country, how people decorate their homes is a very personal choice? It's pretty much what you would expect I guess?
Good follow up questions. Thank you for your time. When I search French Country Christmas tree decorations on Pinterest, it mostly shows neutral color decorations. Do the French just decorate in neutral or are there many styles and colors depending what people like? Thank you. I want an authentic French Country Christmas look in my home and I want to know what that looks like.
Did you ever hear of doors been dipped? In the eighties a bath of caustic soda was used to get paint off old (pine) furniture.
Yes I did. People whose home I filmed for a home tour on this channel had a professional do this with some of their interior doors.
I did it myself, as I was a fan of reilly old pine pieces back in the 80 ies in ireland
Marloes, there are people asking about your book. I can’t find the info from when I ordered mine, so please post it again. Also maybe on your home page with info. 😊

The Christmas guitar music is delightful….who is the artist and which album did you use. My 102 year old dad is confined to bed and is a guitar player and I would like to play this for him. He’s currently on hospice. Thanks
I absolutely love your blog…it distresses me when my challenge to care for my father 24/7 gets to be too demanding. I love your book too!!! Thanks so much for literally saving my sanity!!!

Marlowe, May I ask the height of the ceiling? I will be building soon and I am trying to decide what height I should go. Your kitchen is coming along and is going to be just gorgeous. It is easy to see now.
We actually increased the height of the ceiling of the kitchen, we initially wanted to make it 2.5 meters but then I started feeling uncomfortable and feared it would appear cramped as the open part of the kitchen (where the big window and doors are) is almost 6 meters and I realized the difference would be too high. So we've made it a little over 2.7m. By the way, the height of ceilings are bound to building codes so please do check those in your country!

How are you doing??
@@FrenchCountryLife thank you so much for this info. I will be building in Mexico so I will have a little more leeway than if I were building in the US. It will be a concrete and stone construction. I am looking forward to following the rest of your kitchen.
Bonjour Marloes !
Thanks! Yes we have pierre de Bourgogne countertops in the kitchen of our cottage. So beautiful! I love using local materials!
@@FrenchCountryLife I am not surprised 😉 Thanks for answering, and good evening !
j'ai acheté du décapant "gel "et quant la vieille peinture frise ,il ne reste plus qu'à frotter à la paille inox ..j'ai décapé toutes les portes de ma cuisine il y a un mois et je n'ai pas trop "galéré "
Merci! 🙀
I wonder if a Dremel tool would work for removing paint from tight spots?
I’m afraid it will be too heavy duty and damage the wood? Haven’t tried to be honest.
@@FrenchCountryLife it's a tool specifically designed for crafting.
Your book seems to be out of stock with Amazon. Has it sold out, do you know? If so, will there be another printing?
No the book is printed on demand so it can’t sell out. However if you happen to be in Australia you can’t order it from Amazon Australia as they don’t offer self published hard covers. To get the best shipping rate you can order it from Amazon.co.uk Other viewers have ordered their copy there and it arrived quickly. I hope this helps!
