  • When it comes to sustainability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a top line item. But while the general public focuses on electric cars like Tesla's Model 3, clean energy startup Proterra is leading the charge to electrify buses and large vehicles across America.

its not a lack of investment into the infustructure, cities invest into infustructure most used and critical. the US in general has a culture of cars you can say. its more normal to want a car than to use public transit. if more people where to stop owning and using cars and using public transit then the cities would invest more.
but if a city council where to just suddenly dump a lot of money randomly into a widely unused infrastructure, they are going to loose voters because that money will have to be pulled from other infrastructure improvements, as well as increase traffic on the roads with more busses.
if you really want to fix this problem, get people to stop wanting cars and start using public transit in order to make cities be able to invest in it

    • @adamt195
      @adamt195 4 года назад +19

@@coreytaylor447 Its kind of the other way around. Build the transit and people will use it. Surveys tell us this. But cities continue to fund highways because its all they know how to do and there are certain government mandates that force cities to build more highways. Google "level of service". European countries dont have these types of mandates. They spend money where it makes the most sense for long term plans, not short term political gains.

@Db Trams have a pre-determined route to follow. Why should they be battery powered? Also you do know that if they were battery powered they would be less efficient right? • @gheaflorin
      @gheaflorin 4 года назад +16

Public transport has regular and fixed routes... there's no point in dumping hundred thousand tons in batteries when you can use a grid. Building those batteries is also pollution, and all the ecologists, both amateur and involved in engineering these cars, seem to think those resources are infinite, when lithium reserves are like 15 mill tons. We in eastern Europe have both trams and trolleybuses... we still have trams from like the 60's, the mechanical part mostly require maintenance, while the carriage compartments have been rebuilt like 3 times since. Batteries should be saved for the small cars. The problem imo are the politicians that want an over-night fast and easy solution like electric buses, rather than investing money in the local economy and at least build the infrastructure, that has up to 40-50 years life.

The City of Albuquerque had ordered electric buses for their new BRT system from the Chinese bus company BYD. Unfortunately, the buses were tremendously flawed and the city ended up suing BYD. It's not that simple. First, do we care about climate change or air quality? Trucks on highways contribute to climate change, but don't do much to air quality. Buses on the other hand probably emit less CO2, but far more toxic stuff and at the exact worst place, where most people live.
Also we don't have to choose, we can and should do both. Tesla will take care of trucks, but has no plans for buses, so it's logical to start there. From a business standpoint too, buses are fairly simple, cities are willing to spend extra money on green tech and there's virtually no competition.

2 important points on this video.
Having buses and freight trucks in a single section makes no sense as they serve completely different purposes and MAINLY because freight trucks would make up the vast majority of that fuel consumption.
    2. That being said this is still important technology as increasing public transportations percentage of trips can reduce GHG emissions in 2 way. First by direct substitution from a private vehicle usage(direct from gas powered or indirect from ev), and Second by reducing congestion (this was brought up briefly in the video but not explained). Lowering congestion lowers idling and GHG heavy infrastructure repairs.
Best of luck to this company, especially expanding out into other vehicle types.

yeah decreasing congestion is not done by widening roads - its done by creating mass transit people WANT to use as opposed to their cars. Buses are largely cramped and often late by margins of up to 10 minutes, sometimes they do not come at all, sometimes they simply drive by because there's too many people on them where I live. You can bet your ass that everyone who can afford to drives a private vehicle.
Even though I'm an auto-enthusiast, I think the creation of bus lanes that only buses can use in peak times, as well as improving significantly on public transit are critical, and hell, it would even improve my quality of life as an auto-enthusiast by getting a bunch of idiots off the road! Realistically, most people should not need a car in a well-designed city, even with suburban sprawl.
More buses with more 'private' space is a must if people are to use them with a similar degree of comfort, or there needs to be signficantly clear advantages to buses as compared to driving. Currently, neither are really offered in my city

Why not to use light rail instead? The only downside of light rail is that it has to have enough population density in the area (about 2000 people per square mile) to be as cheap as BRT, while providing all of the benefits of rail transport, such as great scalability and not needing to be stucked in traffic jams, plus it`s not using lithium batteries.

The problem with this is that electrified Transport as a Service will disrupt all transit. That includes mass transit.
They'll need to move towards smaller AV EV micro-buses. Couple that with wireless charging en route, and the smaller vehicles can use smaller batteries and constantly power graze, resulting in near constant near-on-demand service. The question is whether other upstart TAAS services (think Cruise Origin) will beat them to that sustainable business model.

And I think they are better than electric buses. You dont need to charge them, you don't need to dispose of the battery, they are cheaper. Of course, they are only viable in a big city, and you need a wire hanging above, but i think the benefits outweigh the downsides. Not saying electric buses dont have their place in mass transit, but I think a lot of it can be done with trolleybuses.

"Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing."
This sentence is like a veteran carpenter's hand skills
and a performer who plays both hand instruments, (such as piano and guitar)
    If the head orders-
You have to divide the use of your right hand and left hand separately.
It means don't do it in a symmetrical way.
It means not to mix or skip each use.
(including all two-handed instruments, farmers, fishermen, soldiers, tailor, hairdressers, boxers, etc.)
When you work, when you eat, when you breast-feed your baby.
And the structure of the sentence-
writing down the thoughts in your head and reading and speaking them are not symmetrical.)
    Imagine you're holding a tool.
First of all, the right hand-
Apply force to the tool and use it at the 'right' point.
But you don't use it for the 'wrong' point. and then you relax.
And the left hand must point to a place where the use of the right hand is better,
But if the direction is wrong, you have to fix it.
The result of using both hands differently to help each other:
    The carpenter's work is intact.
The guitarist makes a natural sound.
The right hand should not apply force to 'useless place'
The left hand should not be directed 'where you don't know'.
->The carpenter will make a wrong work,
    The performer will play "dissonance."
There is no one who doesn't feel dissonance
    The uncomfortable chair is uncomfortable.
    Logical Design of Human Intelligence:
The power of the right is obtained in the right place, and not in the wrong place.
The left's wish is to head for a better place, but to be honest.
It's 'different' and also 'together', so it is-'As one'.
This 'Pureness' can be seen in your 'body' and 'mind'.
    You prove it yourself.
Also, when there is dirt in your mind,
With the "eye" of the truth that we've realized,
    You can see it.
    I also confess.
I looked at the world based on materialism so,
Many parts of me were against the truth.
Now I can see the shape of our minds.
It naturally makes sense why humans, unlike other animals,
have been able to achieve the present civilization.
The "selfishness" of a human being with the tools of knowledge and information
It's the instinct that no one can deny.
It is necessary for the life and satisfaction of individuals and families
But the current society has become informative and anonymous.
People don't handle inputs with their own hands on online
People don't have to face the result offline.
Everyone is making money and excreting their emotions without having to face each other.
It's full of insensitive antisocial profit-seeking, extreme need for show-off and content addiction.
The space that harms others who don't even know their faces is growing in everyone's mind.
But never get me wrong. Never!
It's not about stopping or not using tools.
    for a long time,
in two pairs of axles: Right leg-left arm//
    left leg-right arm=X&Ypositioning
We've been using tools to use both hands separately and together and help each other harmoniously.
So we can develop the left and right brains respectively,
    We've reached our present intelligence.
Whether or not our own selfishness has stepped on the line can be felt with our own minds.
You can manage wisely so that day-to-day developed tools can be used in a beneficial way.
If someone's selfishness is endless, we can stop it together.
We can discuss how to become a better society,
and the public can easily spread the moment when justice collapses.
    I hope you wake up.
Sooner or later, due to rapid changes in the global environment,
All kinds of crises can come.
And for a long time, there are people in the world who follow unnatural intelligence.
They have a spirit that has become symmetrical with only one axis. (like a bird)
If you take after them for the survival of a few,
It must be a retrogression of the intelligence and ethics that mankind has achieved.
Let's always check the facts on our own to prepare for a crisis.
Let's not leave our intelligence to any particular person, group, media, religion and scripture, special notions, symbols.
If there are reasonable suspicions, let's take a look and develop our ability to suspect
and withhold-judge with diverse knowledge and information.
Let's look into both 'truth' and 'selfishness' and let the truth control the selfishness.
It's not about being a strict instrument player and scolding a clumsy player.
Let's not criticize and hate each other by using fundamental moral principles.
Let's thank the truth and conscience are breathing in us.
If people all around the world join together in ethical and intellectual forces,
we can overcome the crisis and move on to the future.
Please send this message to the world (regardless of the source)
    I emphasize again.
See the "Truth" from "Self"! (not others)
    Thank you, everyone.

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 года назад

“Turbines?” Gas turbines are unsuitable for directly powering motor vehicles. Gas turbines are most efficient when operating at 80-90% of maximum power. An idling gas turbine consumes nearly as much fuel as at full power.
Large gas turbines are more efficient, or less inefficient, than small ones. That's to a great degree why the four engined airliner is rapidly becoming obsolete. Two large engines are much more efficient than four or three smaller ones.
If reliability was high enough we’d have airliners that have one big engine instead of two smaller ones.

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 4 года назад

@@algrayson8965 He's talking about a hybrid arrangement, like the arrangement that Wrightspeed uses. Buses probably don't drive far enough in most cases to need turbine range extenders. In applications where battery storage isn't adequate (like garbage trucks), piston engine range extenders with power recovery turbines would probably be a better (but more expensive) choice than pure turbine engines.
