I was expecting this to be boring buts its actually pretty interesting.
Keep your expectations low, that way you'll never be disappointed.
Very nice bus. I hope this technology becomes available and popular in all 50 states.

Samuel Rosenberg With roughly 80% charge in 10 minutes and no diesel fumes I'd say it's pretty remarkable since every driver needs a bathroom break at some point anyway. If they can make that break the charging station I wouldn't be whining about this busses deficiencies.
Samuel Rosenberg all city buses have bus stops where they stop for 10 minutes or so.
If you were a bus driver, though, you would indeed be keen on having a bus that only had to carry enough battery weight to make it through an 18 mile route and then could recharge for another run in only 10 minutes, (the normal wait time between runs). If you can get your recharge time down to less than or equal to your wait time, then it would be silly to carry excess battery weight beyond what is needed for a single run.
The bus operator is overqualified for his job. If I ever take the bus and he's driving, I could talk to him all day.

Well to be fair, it's hard to get the FUN factor from an electric car. Like Jay said, "recreational". As a motorhead, I LOVE cars! I love the noise, I love mechanical parts, and I love doing the maintenance on my own car. But.. as a daily, I would definitely prefer an electric car. I would love to be more efficient, eco-friendly, and save money by eliminating my fuel cost for a vehicle that is meant to take me to and from work every day. But as a fun, recreational toy, I would like to keep around gasoline/diesel vehicles.

That's the worst part about it. I drove buses in college and I almost hit kids that couldn't hear the bus and would step out in front of it. I fear this would be even worse.
@@vampov There are electric school buses in the Sacramento area that have an alarm they play when they are going under 10mph, so that's a possible alternative.

I hope he stopped for the railroad crossing. I saw the sign painted on the road but the video didn't show the actual crossing.

10 Min to charge a battery? Impressive!
Yup, that's why they're using that thick top charger. It charges at 350kW, 3x faster than Tesla's Superchargers. If you were to attach that to a Tesla it'd also in theory charge in 10 minutes. However, a bus gets 5x worse efficiency per mile, so the 10 minute battery goes 50 miles(80kWh) for longer distances you have bigger batteries that take longer to charge(250 miles, 440kWh, 260kW charge rate; charges in 2-3 hours).

Far greater merit than an electric car....we should be starting in mass transit FIRST - including taxis and vans. They make up most vehicle miles in every city in the world and duty cycle is a great match - PM 10,9,8,7,6 and the rest are 100% removed. Yes the electricty is carbon intense but that will be managed by renewables and sequestartion...Wireless Electic Buses - WEB - Wowzer!
Right, mass transit is the logical choice for proving the technology. We really don't need a bunch of cars running around and then find that there is a problem with the tech, cost, or reliability in a few years and then we have electric car junk yards all over!
The problem is public transit can't get absolutely everywhere in a large city in a timely manner. There are many cities where public transit avoids vast areas of a city because the economics are not there. This is why cars will be with us if we want to get to that good job. There needs to be a fundamental change of a cities layout for transit to be everywhere and efficient.
Another problem with mass transit is the time. During off-peak traffic, I can get to the airport from home in about 25 minutes. Mass transit would take me 1 hour and that's after I get to the terminal which is about 4 miles from home. So add on at least another 15-30 minutes if the bus is running, otherwise call Uber. 20 minute drive into work becomes 1.5 hours by bus (and requires 3 bus changes). And then here (Portland, Oregon) last week a 2 year old was stuck by a syringe while sitting on the light rail. Last year 2 people were stabbed to death by a crazy guy. I rarely take the light rail, but once I witnessed a fight break out. Twice the train broke down although only for about 10 and 20 minutes. I've probably only ridden it 15 times in my life. Better solution is for everyone to have an electric self-driving pod.

Every EV I've heard of will refuse to move if its charging port is plugged in. And flash a "uh, Dummy..." warning to the driver that tries.

As if RUclips isn't full of videos of people driving off with the fuel hose still inside. Except, with electricity, you destroy the cable, not spray gas everywhere. That all goes without the fact that EVs don't move if they're plugged in, so kind of fool proof!

This is really interesting. Jay always has some excellent, informative, and interesting subjects in his garage. I find this especially interesting since we now have the (small) BYD bus assembly plant here in Lancaster, CA. The city is showing off their bus that is supposed to be in service later this summer but it isn't even close in technology (or common sense, in my opinion) to this Foothill Transit bus. The use of composites and existing technology makes the Foothill bus a real world solution and the quick charge feature is really amazing. Now it's proven technology having been in service for more than a year. Plus the ability to operate 24/7 is a tremendous advancement. REALLY GREAT, Thanks Jay!!!

I feel like this bus should have solar panels built into the roof. With cars, I can understand that there's not enough surface area for a solar panel to generate significant energy. But a bus will have way more space, so it would have a more significant power output, no? At least to run some low amperage system like the lights inside or something.
I'm sure it would have, but I'm guessing if the goal of this bus was to be relatively cheap, light, very low maintenance and simply being a straight forward 24/7 work horse, today's solar panels quickly make it more expensive and higher maintenance, plus it's completely unnecessary, seeing as they get all the electricity they need and more from the charging station. I suspect you wouldn't get much payoff from a solar panel, neither economically nor emissions wise (which is why there's not more of them around anywhere), so they're probably better off saving that money for something else :)
the chinese byd company already has solar panels in its roof and its way more advanced than this bus check it out its on youtube

Wartler you would never get enough solar panels on the roof of it to recharge it from 20% to 95% in 10 minutes like the guy mentioned. You could def install them but panels would not recharge at nearly the same rate as the bus' battery's would be discharging as it drives around to make it worthwhile- maybe in the future though.

City of Shenzhen, China recently (Jan 2018) completed conversion to an all-electric bus fleet. They are operating 16,000+ BYD electric buses.

This definitely seems more compelling than that BYD eBus that's being trialled everywhere in the world right now. Whoever manufacturers this bus should consider licensing this technology to European, Japanese, and Korean bus manufacturers so this technology can appear in European-standard or Asian-standard buses on this side of the world.

In nottingham, in the UK we now have a few electric busses on various routes. But most our single deck deisel busses have always had rear windows tbh.

I too love the technology of this bus. It's great and gives us all hope for the future, But I was a grad student in Urban Planning decades ago. All my classmates were crazy for buses. Buses make more sense than cars in many ways but only if you ignore the real reasons people prefer cars to buses,
A car is a steel box that offers you transportation but also protection. If you come out of a place in a dark urban neighborhood you want to get into your car, lock the doors and put on your own music. You want to go then exactly where you want to go. You don't want to wait outside in the rain for a bus full of potentially dangerous strangers. If you are a woman with a baby that is even more true.

The bus & it ' s heavy running costs are fine in packed cities , where potential customers are at a relatively close together & numerous . But most of North America has a low population density , the car wins for all the wrong reasons . Mr Boyle , think about gun control , the vast majority of your neighbours are reasonable , like yourself , they want to just get on to their day to day ........ & won ' t shot you .

AND WASN'T DRAGGING THE SHOP CHARGER BEHIND HIM.
In San Francisco (and other places) we've had fully electric buses for a long time, using a roof-mounted trolley system to pull electricity off wires strung over the street. And their performance is impressive. From a dead stop, pointing uphill on a steep hill, when the driver hits the accelerator it *will* knock you on your ass if you aren't ready for it, while a diesel ICE huffs and puffs just to get going. This has no trolley system to come unhooked, and 10 min charge time is great.
we have a couple of these in our city and a few hybrids as well they work good but in the winter these aren't as reliable due to the temp. the can't be left outside either..the hybrids are good once running. but these have a hard time keeping a charge at -30.
It's a drawback of electric power, but buses are generally operating in warmer conditions.
Still, advances in technology can offset these issues.
I live in south Texas, where the temperature rarely gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius.

It usually occurs on accident, and is usually only noticed on words that end with an “Ah” vowel. So words like “pizza” “Tesla” and “Santa” are accidentally pronounced “pizzer” “tesler” and “santer”. It’s not wrong... it’s just the way it is.

Wow that's very interesting they came up with some good ideas with Electric Technology for Buses Running on Batteries and the Coach Body is Built out of Balsa Wood and Fiberglass combination , which will allow the bus to last longer than some of the older ones but even more impressive is that Jay Leno of the Tonight Show is Driving the Bus....Ha.

Most of the buses in my district run on propane. I’m pretty sure it’s very widespread.
WOW!...Just think years ago when I was training to become a Bus Driver we used the Big Long and Rectangular in Shape "FootHill Transit" Bus! Even though the Bus was Large it was Easy to Drive and used a Toggle Switch to Control the Transmission which I though was pretty unique!

What's the reasoning behind having the metal bike rack thing in the front of the bus? In EU it would be no bueno because of pedestrian safety.

since every bus has a fixed route, it would would have been cheaper and more practical to just run 2 wires over and make it a trolley bus. this way there would be no need for 20min charging breaks and the bus can use smaller batteries if it needed to drive to where there are not wires for it
It's not 20 min breaks but 10 min breaks. That was in 2012, so I would think it maybe less then that now, with more miles per charge on the newer designed batteries. They have temporary fixed routes here, because we are constantly growing and changing, with great distances in-between. If you just stick to the trollies, you will never find a better system. Necessity is the mother of invention ya know. You keep improving on it till it is the best it can be. At least that's what we do here in America. If trollies were the best, we wouldn't have changed them.

well, actually Ford and other motor companies had bought them up and killed them in order to make people buy cars. seriously, look it up. but yes, trolleys are not perferct, but they are better than diesel buses and would make a great transitional tech

We are on the same page Alex. I live in Wellington, New Zealand, where we have a trolley bus system operating since the 1950s when the trams (street cars) were withdrawn. Now the fools we elect have decided to get rid of trolley buses because they need to run fixed routes. They will be replaced by hybrids which will run a great deal of the time on LPG or diesel due to the hilly terrain. Absolute stupidity in an age when should be extending trolley bus installations like the rest of the world is doing.

I agree, and like Jay said, saving fuel for people who truly value and enjoy engines and cars is great. Most people who commute to work would love an electric car because they don't care about cars like we do, and the gasoline or diesel they are using would be better used by someone who can appreciate every rev an engine makes.
It's absolutely amazing when you consider the technology now even compared to just 10 years ago, it's really good.
All busses in my city are now electric! Even the deliveries here in the Netherlands are now electric!
@@cg986 Problem with electric is that if the power grid goes down for what ever reason the city will be paralyzed. More R&D needs to go to Hydrogen.
@@twocansams6335 You obviously have done no research into refuelling of hydrogen. It can't be done without power. Next to that, hydrogen needs 4 times more energy put in to create the same amount of range. It can't change, because of the laws of nature. That's why fossil fuel companies are pushing hydrogen. It needs so much power, that we would never be able to generate it with clean energy only. At least with EV's you can deliver back to your house in case of a power outage and in the rare case you that has never happened to me you can hook up a generator to your house and still charge your car ;)... You can even use the car battery as a way to trade energy and actually make money of it when energy is more needed somewhere.
@@cg986 I guess you never lived though a power outage, I lived through the one that took out power in Ontario Canda, New York State as well as a few other states.
Power was gone for months, a few gas stations got generators, buses ran on gas then. 10's of millions of people without power in a blink of the eye, you honestly think you can find a generator to charge your tesla? Generators were bought and given to grocery stores, gas stations and banks. With Hydrogen all you need to do is get a generator to power one station that can fuel 100's if not 1000's of vehicles. That guy was wrong when he said we haven't seen rear windows on a bus in 20 years. Here in Brampton Ontario Canada, the Novabus and New Flyers have rear windows.

Doesn't mention it's Achilles heel. The extremely short battery life when charging like this, the sheer amount of them in this bus and for the sake of the ecomentalists, the environmental damage caused by the manufacture and disposal of them.
And even now in 2016 the battery technology hasn't advanced to make them a viable option, environmentally wise, for public transportation systems. There are mountains of failed batteries costing more to recycle than they are worth.
Exactly. The lithium ion batteries have compromised longevity for being able to charge as and when. Milk floats and forklift trucks of old that used NiCad batteries used to last for ages and the charge capacity remained for a long time provided you used the battery to near depletion and charged fully. The Lithium batteries were developed for mobile phones and laptops, they can't get a 'memory' unlike older tech and are best stored on 50% and charged ideally at over 30%, unfortunately, as anyone with a 2-3 year old phone/laptop knows, they don't last. The same technology is used in all modern electric vehicles, only thousands more cells to dispose of.
John Galt eso Every phone I've owned the batteries would crap out in a year or two at the most if you're lucky. Lg batteries die once they drop below 10% after 500 charges, my samsung tablet that sat depleted for 6 months still holds 10 hour charges though and its over two years old already.
Batteries can be recycled.
