What the Catholic Church got away with in this country is unbelievable, it took a long time for people to come forward and I’am of the opinion that it has been going on for decades before anyone spoke out. What I say next is not a condemnation of everyone who was abused, many were abused and never did any harm, but there are some who were abused and went on to abuse, a second wave, I was a victim of the second wave. Having worked closely with my Priest here in the US, I'm aware of the new training which our Priests are being taught: they are never permitted to be in the same space as a child changing into altar clothes, they are never permitted to be with a child alone (parents must be nearby during Confessions), they are not permitted to be in narrow hallways with children, they need to maintain an arm's distance when conversing with a minor and at all times, should have other adults around them who are not Priests. Right now, in the US, abuse has been committed by approximately 4% of Priests. That's in comparison to 17% of Step-Dads or Live-in boyfriends, or 11% of teachers. We have a long way to go, but the church is taking this seriously.
