I was raised in the Catholic Church , but 17 years ago when I found out what was going on I broke from the church. I am no longer a catholic, but I still have my faith. I don't need a church to be close to god.............. It makes me sick what is still going on to this day at the vatican...... : (
The most shocking betrayal were that of many of the parents of these abused kids. I experienced first hand of it. After telling my mom about attempted rape by a Buddhist clergy, I was told to keep quiet and forgive him. My mom knew the clergy had past history of attacking teenage girls, nothing happened. She never spoke of it again. I was sure if i didn’t learn karate since age 11, “attempted rape” would have been “rape”. The betrayal still had a profound effect psychologically, at 15, i attempted suicide. I experienced 2 years of clinical depression and it took years of therapy to get over it. It’s not just the Catholic Church but all religious institutions. Rather than expelling the monks and defrocking them for breaking the rules as the Buddha had decreed 2500 years ago, they are allowed to move to another temple. It’s incredible how people want to cover up these incidents and pretend it doesn’t happen. The victims are shamed and told to pretend it didn’t happen. Sexual abuse of a child is the most profound betrayal one can experience. It psychologically more harmful and sinister than anything a child can experience.

The monies of peoples they give to these religions, even after informed of abuse over decades + decades of children telling, the brain washed followers helped hide the stories. Had a friend that was Catholic, her sister became a nun and she (the nun) told her sister when she became pregnant by the priest. Then my friend went on to tell me they buried the baby under the cathedral ... and that there were many babies buried under the cathedral. All I could do was cry and my heart was so broken, I NEVER went to church again!!!

I think this is a little extreme. You don't want to make your kid paranoid. Instead, use the old Russian saying: "Trust but verify". Teach your kid that their body is theirs and to tell you if they feel uncomfortable. Be open about sexuality with them (as long as it's age-appropriate). Make sure the institutions in your kid's life (school, church/temple/mosque, sports teams, etc) do background checks on people and have a system in place demanding that violations get reported to the cops. Do all the above precautions, but let the kid live their life. Let them run around and play. Let them explore. Let them be kids.

As the only non-catholic family , in a solid Catholic neighborhood, I always questioned the fact that the Catholic Churches always needed money , they said to pay for building and utilities. Problem with that is. : most of these church buildings were built 20 years before I was born. There should have been no mortgage left to pay !! And heaven help you if you didn’t make a donation when they passed the plate which were baskets on long poles so they missed NOVODY. in my Lutheran church on Sunday morning, the donation plate was passed from one person to the next by hand and if you couldn’t contribute , NO BIG DEAL. when we built our building about 10 years after we formed the congregation , we had the money to pay cash for everything. We owned it , FREE AND CLEAR so, monthly we just had utilities and the salary of the minister and property taxes to pay. Funds were there to help the community in case of emergency from us , but not the 4 Catholic Churches.
The Vatican had no problem moving the abusive priests around to different parishes, so they should have no problem moving their money around to help those parishes now. Rome should pay.
Yea but even just the acknowledgement of wrongdoing can do a surprising amount. Give you closure and all that. The wound will still be there, but at least it's not festering anymore. Desperate for them to admit that what they did to you was wrong.
Like others have said, it can help people just getting a form of closure and acknowledgement. On top of that money certainly can help with potential medical bills from psychiatrist visits, from anxiety medicine or whatever they have needed, and it may also enable them to pay off a loan or just help them live an easier life if they're so psychologically damaged that they're unable to work full time or at all.
I watched a documentary over 30 years ago on abuse in a Canadian Orphanage where the abusers were simply moved to another parish. It puzzled me for years why they didn't eradicate these people, the only explanation l could come to is that they were all at it. Or just too many.

The priest responsible for investigating and organising the settlements himself gets accused and found guilty of abuse 2. In my case it was my own grandfather who sexually molested me when I was nine years old , my cousins and even my aunts and uncles had also been sexually abused but never protected us . Over 65yrs ago , still haunts me today because my young brother committed suicide but he never told me if he had also been abused therefore I feel the guilt of keeping that well known family secret instead of speaking out .

The pain and sorrow...so real...the despair, the loneliness, the hatred of oneself...the "knowing" that no one will believe them. It is all so sad that they feel, that they KNOW, in their minds, that no one will believe them. The absolute shame, thinking they did something to warrant such behavior. But then the bravery of those who choose to come forward and share their stories is something to believe in. Their strength is beyond what many of us will ever know.

It's a common trait in pedophiles to keep the secrets, a small part adding into what makes them so evil and vile. Unfortunately, I don't think that would help. Rape and pedophilia has sexual undertones, sure, but its all about power. That's the primary driver. The children who are abused never really "recover" I am too tired to tell all of the reasons why I know this. (Retired psychiatric technician/nurse who worked in maximum security forensic psychiatric facilities with Sexually Violent Predators and serial killers/mass murderers) as well as a survivor. But, yeah.
I agree, I've worked on units that treat mental health problems AND until you see a grown man shake and cry recalling how he was sodomized it'll never make you physically ill as it made me! The sad thing is the royal commission was only done for crimes within the church. There are just as many pedophiles who are politicians, judges, police, child care workers teachers scouts etc. But no complaint was accepted from other areas. Of course pedophiles will be attracted to jobs where they can easily have access to children and community trust.
Open up, speak to people, if this happened to you! I have two close friends who lost siblings through suicide after sexual abuse in childhood. Both have now gone public with their stories, and the reactions are amazing. You have no idea how many people around you have probably suffered one form or another of sexual abuse and have been carrying this load by themselves. I have my own story.. it's "harmless" in comparison, but I had to turn 50 before I told anybody. Which goes to show that's it's never really "harmless", I guess.
Agree. There is more sexual abuse and/or rape going on than people can comprehend. People are afraid due to threats made, or the person is an authority figure. Or they worry what people will think of them. It's not just in the church either. And it's not just done by strangers. It's done by dates, father's brothers, uncles, next door neighbor, babysitters, bosses as well. People who haven't been victimized just do not understand why victims wait years to come forward. Nothing is worse than telling and being blamed or told to keep it quiet.

I just watched this video and I am absolutely astounded. I live in the UK and obviously there has been a great deal of controversy about the Catholic church and abusive priests - mainly in Ireland it be said, but also in the rest of Britain. Then another controversy less known about was the Magdalene laundries (once again mainly in Ireland because of the Catholic association) where young girls who had been rejected by their families for the shame of having sex before marriage or becoming pregnant. Thousands of these young girls ended up being imprisoned in these places and being used as slave labour in the laundries run by the Catholic nuns. Not only this, the girls that had babies had their babies taken from them and 'adopted' by couples looking for children. They of course were obliged to offer significant donations to the church for this so in effect the church was selling these children. The added cruelty was that the babies and girls were allowed some interaction for a significant time prior to the babies were sold, so strong maternal bonds were formed and then suddenly the child was gone. So I now see similar things going on in other countries - it is an epidemic of abuse. The Vatican is doing everything it can to avoid its responsibility in these matters. Yet it holds direct responsibility - it knows this type of abuse has been going on for 100's of years and has done everything it can to avoid any culpability. It is long overdue that the Vatican is brought to justice. Further, I cannot understand how any of these poor people who had their trust in this establishment so abused and damaged, remain faithful to Catholicism !! The disgusting actions of the Priests whom represent the faith were not punished as they should have been by the authority of the higher church, but quite the opposite, they were sheltered by them.

Unfortunately it's not just the Catholic church, adults with power over vulnerable people (like children) have always abused their power by physical, emotional or sexual abuse. I'm not saying everyone with power but it's very, very common. No one says it, but we should look at the nature of being human. And parents should watch over their children extremely carefully...and when u have a large family that's much harder to do. Poverty adds to the vulnerability of course, but really people are vicious and unpredictable. I owned a daycare for 30 years and have realized in my workers and myself (+ many parent's) the tendency to want to dominate and frighten the kids into better behavior. Even if u know u 'shouldn't' feel that way. Workers or religious leaders who work with kids should have cameras on them at all times. Parents, NEVER leave yr kids alone with adults who you do not know extremely well. The abuse they suffer can destroy their lives. If u must leave them to work, use daycare sparingly. I personally believe it's never entirely safe. Sexual abuse is not the only destructive behavior...it's just more sensational and here in our country (U.S.) puritanical ideas are alive and well. So the stigma around is overblown.

No one can take that or change it. He will lead you. Read your Bible and Trust it and ask The Holy Spirit to guide you. He will. There are churches who prosecute to the full extent of the law when such things happen. I know bc it happened at my church and our Pastor brought every charge possible. That man is in prison now. The Vatican sends these priests to the various parishes and yes, they should pay. I felt so badly that that poor parish was forced to pay a sum like that. Not when you see the Archdiocesan headquarters looking like the lap of luxury. The Church moves these perverts around (individual bishops, but their power comes from Roome) from parish to unsuspecting parish. So the Vatican should pay.
I was raised Roman Catholic and remained a staunch Catholic until the late 1990's. It took me at least 5 years to get over the indoctrination from the youngest age, but I'm so glad I escaped. I don't recall ever being victimized by a priest, but the entire power structure of the church is overwhelming, and I have the utmost sympathy with those who didn't have a way to escape the abuse. I am entirely happy being out from under the thumb of religion of any kind. I direct my life according to my own conscience, and don't need a "spiritual leader" to tell me what to do.

You need to read "Maria Monk", an autobiography of a nun who fled her Nunnery! They have pulled down old Nunneries all over Europe & skeletons of newborns sealed in the walls from Priests & Nuns cohabitations. Maria Monk says the Nuns were to smother the newborn at birth, then the Priest gave them the last rites which will send them straight to heaven. In her Nunnery, the corpses were placed in a lime pit in the basement in Quebec. After Monk's book came out, other Nuns wrote their own autobiography. Infanticides, thousands of them & the nuns couldn't refuse the priests since they were said to represent God, himself.

I'm surprised that guy still goes to church every Sunday.... I was born and raised Catholic in India, and the horrible things I saw around me being done by the clergy and priests, starting from stealing from the church, discouraging us from reading the Bible as it is only for priests to understand and interpret it, and believe without questioning whatever is taught in catechism, using trust for money laundering, womanising, trapping innocent teenagers to have sex with them, cornering and shaming the victims families and mindful people who spoke up against this- declaring them anathema or heretics. (The Catholic church has that kind of power here) All this by those who I was taught are representatives of Jesus Christ himself led me to become an atheist because I was taught to see God through the Catholic Church and the God that allowed this is no God. This in a country where all Christians account just 5 percent of the population and Catholics 60 percent of the Christians. This got me wondering, what kind of influence and scale of such activities the RC church has in countries where they form a significant proportion of the population. And I being an avid reader of history learned about the origins of Roman Catholicism, how they hijacked Christianity and manipulated it to maintain and enforce power disgusted me even more and made me realize this has been going on for centuries. Also I had family members who were born again believers and they encouraged me to read the Bible and help me understand that Catholic Church and God are not the same and how deviant it is from the scriptures. They do not even make an effort to abide to the scriptures. Now the Catholic Church is just and corporate organization which will do anything to retain it's membership base. Only another great Reformation will help it.
What brought me to tears was when one of the victims said while being abused he looked up at the cross with Jesus and said Jesus looking can he save me now!
I'm 75 & my Grandfather on my Mothers side of the family was a carpenter, he was called to tear down an old church & he said in between the walls were bones of babies in the walls. So, I knew of this at a young age. My grandfather who was a devout Catholic left the church & the rest of our family also left the church we as children left the Catholic school & went to public schools. So I believe these accusations of the priest of the. Church. Sad huh!!! I had a half sister & my father's grandfather on my father's side of the family went to the church & took her out of the church she told a stories of abuse in the church & begged my Grandfather on my father's side to come & get her. Which eventually he did. This is so so sad I'm glad they are finally ackknowledging this. My family is all gone now that this effected but I had known this from a very young age.
The Vatican needs to cough up the money and also take responsibility for their priests rampant child sex abuse. Criminal reparations/charges are needed.
They were abused themselves. Everyone who was abused doesn't abuse others, but those that abused were themselves abused. It doesn't justify it, but that's the this works. Check out any addicts, obese people, they have serious childhood trauma and abuse.

Anybody in a post it ion of power can easily sexually abuse someone, it's not just a Catholic Church it's case workers it's youth leaders. People with money also do it because they can get away with it. As long as you are looked up to and trusted you can sexually abuse someone.

There was a movie released in 2015 called Spotlight. A true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered a massive scandal and cover-up into cases of widespread systemic child sex abuse by the church, which funnily enough, led right back to the Vatican. Growing up I never felt comfortable in churches, now I know why. My heart goes out to all the victims past and present.
In Hawaii, my Catholic friends get very offended when anyone attacks their faith. They love the idea that they are forgiven just for confessing. Some are not very nice.
I give Latimer props for taking the moral high ground and fighting for all those that were abused as children by these priests. He was abused himself like so many.

The most shocking betrayal were that of many of the parents of these abused kids. I experienced first hand of it. After telling my mom about attempted rape by a Buddhist clergy, I was told to keep quiet and forgive him. My mom knew the clergy had past history of attacking teenage girls, nothing happened. She never spoke of it again. I was sure if i didn’t learn karate since age 11, “attempted rape” would have been “rape”. The betrayal still had a profound effect psychologically, at 15, i attempted suicide. I experienced 2 years of clinical depression and it took years of therapy to get over it. It’s not just the Catholic Church but all religious institutions. Rather than expelling the monks and defrocking them for breaking the rules as the Buddha had decreed 2500 years ago, they are allowed to move to another temple.
It’s incredible how people want to cover up these incidents and pretend it doesn’t happen. The victims are shamed and told to pretend it didn’t happen. Sexual abuse of a child is the most profound betrayal one can experience. It psychologically more harmful and sinister than anything a child can experience.

Had a friend that was Catholic, her sister became a nun and she (the nun) told her sister when she became pregnant by the priest. Then my friend went on to tell me they buried the baby under the cathedral ... and that there were many babies buried under the cathedral. All I could do was cry and my heart was so broken, I NEVER went to church again!!!

I think this is a little extreme. You don't want to make your kid paranoid.
Instead, use the old Russian saying: "Trust but verify". Teach your kid that their body is theirs and to tell you if they feel uncomfortable. Be open about sexuality with them (as long as it's age-appropriate). Make sure the institutions in your kid's life (school, church/temple/mosque, sports teams, etc) do background checks on people and have a system in place demanding that violations get reported to the cops.
Do all the above precautions, but let the kid live their life. Let them run around and play. Let them explore. Let them be kids.

As the only non-catholic family , in a solid Catholic neighborhood, I always questioned the fact that the Catholic Churches always needed money , they said to pay for building and utilities. Problem with that is. : most of these church buildings were built 20 years before I was born. There should have been no mortgage left to pay !! And heaven help you if you didn’t make a donation when they passed the plate which were baskets on long poles so they missed NOVODY. in my Lutheran church on Sunday morning, the donation plate was passed from one person to the next by hand and if you couldn’t contribute , NO BIG DEAL. when we built our building about 10 years after we formed the congregation , we had the money to pay cash for everything. We owned it , FREE AND CLEAR so, monthly we just had utilities and the salary of the minister and property taxes to pay. Funds were there to help the community in case of emergency from us , but not the 4 Catholic Churches.
The Vatican had no problem moving the abusive priests around to different parishes, so they should have no problem moving their money around to help those parishes now. Rome should pay.

Like others have said, it can help people just getting a form of closure and acknowledgement. On top of that money certainly can help with potential medical bills from psychiatrist visits, from anxiety medicine or whatever they have needed, and it may also enable them to pay off a loan or just help them live an easier life if they're so psychologically damaged that they're unable to work full time or at all.

I watched a documentary over 30 years ago on abuse in a Canadian Orphanage where the abusers were simply moved to another parish. It puzzled me for years why they didn't eradicate these people, the only explanation l could come to is that they were all at it. Or just too many.

In my case it was my own grandfather who sexually molested me when I was nine years old , my cousins and even my aunts and uncles had also been sexually abused but never protected us . Over 65yrs ago , still haunts me today because my young brother committed suicide but he never told me if he had also been abused therefore I feel the guilt of keeping that well known family secret instead of speaking out .

The pain and sorrow...so real...the despair, the loneliness, the hatred of oneself...the "knowing" that no one will believe them. It is all so sad that they feel, that they KNOW, in their minds, that no one will believe them. The absolute shame, thinking they did something to warrant such behavior. The first lie is calling someone who is NOT YOUR ACTUAL PARENT FATHER OR MOTHER!!!!! This changes the brain n puts the parental authority on someone other than YOUR ACTUAL PARENT. the next problem is everything else.

The sins of the Vatican are so large and so encompassing, that I believe they were a pagan organization from the beginning. Many believe them to be the great harlot spoken of in the book of revelation. Anyone from any organization who causes such harm to these little ones, the Bible's says it would be better for them to have a mill stone around their neck. The sad thing is the royal commission was only done for crimes within the church. There are just as many pedophiles who are politicians, judges, police, child care workers teachers scouts etc. But no complaint was accepted from other areas. Of course pedophiles will be attracted to jobs where they can easily have access to children and community trust.

Open up, speak to people, if this happened to you! I have two close friends who lost siblings through suicide after sexual abuse in childhood. Both have now gone public with their stories, and the reactions are amazing. You have no idea how many people around you have probably suffered one form or another of sexual abuse and have been carrying this load by themselves.
I have my own story.. it's "harmless" in comparison, but I had to turn 50 before I told anybody. Which goes to show that's it's never really "harmless", I guess.

Agree. There is more sexual abuse and/or rape going on than people can comprehend. People are afraid due to threats made, or the person is an authority figure. Or they worry what people will think of them. It's not just in the church either. And it's not just done by strangers. It's done by dates, father's brothers, uncles, next door neighbor, babysitters, bosses as well. People who haven't been victimized just do not understand why victims wait years to come forward. Nothing is worse than telling and being blamed or told to keep it quiet.
Myself and my brother, who died recently, lived with the same painful secrets. In Sarnia Ontario our school and church Sacred Heart had molesting priests. Many would not believe us.

I just watched this video and I am absolutely astounded. I live in the UK and obviously there has been a great deal of controversy about the Catholic church and abusive priests - mainly in Ireland it be said, but also in the rest of Britain. Then another controversy less known about was the Magdalene laundries (once again mainly in Ireland because of the Catholic association)
where young girls who had been rejected by their families for the shame of having sex before marriage or becoming pregnant. Thousands of these young girls ended up being imprisoned in these places and being used as slave labour in the laundries run by the Catholic nuns. Not only this, the girls that had babies had their babies taken from them and 'adopted' by couples looking for children. They of course were obliged to offer significant donations to the church for this so in effect the church was selling these children. The added cruelty was that the babies and girls were allowed some interaction for a significant time prior to the babies were sold, so strong maternal bonds were formed and then suddenly the child was gone. So I now see similar things going on in other countries - it is an epidemic of abuse. The Vatican is doing everything it can to avoid its responsibility in these matters. Yet it holds direct responsibility - it knows this type of abuse has been going on for 100's of years and has done everything it can to avoid any culpability. It is long overdue that the Vatican is brought to justice.
Further, I cannot understand how any of these poor people who had their trust in this establishment so abused and damaged, remain faithful to Catholicism !! The disgusting actions of the Priests whom represent the faith were not punished as they should have been by the authority of the higher church, but quite the opposite, they were sheltered by them.

Unfortunately it's not just the Catholic church, adults with power over vulnerable people (like children) have always abused their power by physical, emotional or sexual abuse. I'm not saying everyone with power but it's very, very common. No one says it, but we should look at the nature of being human. And parents should watch over their children extremely carefully...and when u have a large family that's much harder to do. Poverty adds to the vulnerability of course, but really people are vicious and unpredictable. I owned a daycare for 30 years and have realized in my workers and myself (+ many parent's) the tendency to want to dominate and frighten the kids into better behavior. Even if u know u 'shouldn't' feel that way. Workers or religious leaders who work with kids should have cameras on them at all times. Parents, NEVER leave yr kids alone with adults who you do not know extremely well. The abuse they suffer can destroy their lives. If u must leave them to work, use daycare sparingly. I personally believe it's never entirely safe. Sexual abuse is not the only destructive behavior...it's just more sensational and here in our country (U.S.) puritanical ideas are alive and well. So the stigma around is overblown.

Bishop Dunn just plays with words and it is the VATICAN'S duty to raise the funds needed for paying the legal cases, not the poor local diocese!
The Vatican sends these priests to the various parishes and yes, they should pay. I felt so badly that that poor parish was forced to pay a sum like that. Not when you see the Archdiocesan headquarters looking like the lap of luxury. The Church moves these perverts around (individual bishops, but their power comes from Roome) from parish to unsuspecting parish. So the Vatican should pay.
I was raised Roman Catholic and remained a staunch Catholic until the late 1990's. It took me at least 5 years to get over the indoctrination from the youngest age, but I'm so glad I escaped. I don't recall ever being victimized by a priest, but the entire power structure of the church is overwhelming, and I have the utmost sympathy with those who didn't have a way to escape the abuse. I am entirely happy being out from under the thumb of religion of any kind. I direct my life according to my own conscience, and don't need a "spiritual leader" to tell me what to do.

You need to read "Maria Monk", an autobiography of a nun who fled her Nunnery! They have pulled down old Nunneries all over Europe & skeletons of newborns sealed in the walls from Priests & Nuns cohabitations. Maria Monk says the Nuns were to smother the newborn at birth, then the Priest gave them the last rites which will send them straight to heaven. In her Nunnery, the corpses were placed in a lime pit in the basement in Quebec. After Monk's book came out, other Nuns wrote their own autobiography. You guys are brave and the folks and the society at large who supported you in bringing this out shows that the Catholic Church does no longer have that kind of power over society and better sense prevailed. I was born and raised Catholic in India, and the horrible things I saw around me being done by the clergy and priests, starting from stealing from the church, discouraging us from reading the Bible as it is only for priests to understand and interpret it, and believe without questioning whatever is taught in catechism, using trust for money laundering, womanising, trapping innocent teenagers to have sex with them, cornering and shaming the victims families and mindful people who spoke up against this- declaring them anathema or heretics. (The Catholic church has that kind of power here) All this by those who I was taught are representatives of Jesus Christ himself led me to become an atheist because I was taught to see God through the Catholic Church and the God that allowed this is no God. This in a country where all Christians account just 5 percent of the population and Catholics 60 percent of the Christians. This got me wondering, what kind of influence and scale of such activities the RC church has in countries where they form a significant proportion of the population. And I being an avid reader of history learned about the origins of Roman Catholicism, how they hijacked Christianity and manipulated it to maintain and enforce power disgusted me even more and made me realize this has been going on for centuries.
Also I had family members who were born again believers and they encouraged me to read the Bible and help me understand that Catholic Church and God are not the same and how deviant it is from the scriptures. They do not even make an effort to abide to the scriptures. Now the Catholic Church is just and corporate organization which will do anything to retain it's membership base. Only another great Reformation will help it.
What brought me to tears was when one of the victims said while being abused he looked up at the cross with Jesus and said Jesus looking can he save me now!

I'm 75 & my Grandfather on my Mothers side of the family was a carpenter, he was called to tear down an old church & he said in between the walls were bones of babies in the walls.
So, I knew of this at a young age. My grandfather who was a devout Catholic left the church & the rest of our family also left the church we as children left the Catholic school & went to public schools. So I believe these accusations of the priest of the. Church. Sad huh!!!
I had a half sister & my father's grandfather on my father's side of the family went to the church & took her out of the church she told a stories of abuse in the church & begged my Grandfather on my father's side to come & get her. Which eventually he did.
This is so so sad I'm glad they are finally ackknowledging this.

Unfortunately, the Catholic church isn't going anywhere. With millions made each week, its a lucrative business at this point. Money is the motive and the money is all that's cared about. If you look at all the heartache in the world you will notice that it is men putting faith in man not in God because of the atrocities in Abominations that happen everyday all day long. Someday Helen you will see it. You will see God coming you take back with man has ruined and I hope when that happens that you will be there with them. God bless and prayers
There was a movie released in 2015 called Spotlight. A true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered a massive scandal and cover-up into cases of widespread systemic child sex abuse by the church, which funnily enough, led right back to the Vatican. Growing up I never felt comfortable in churches, now I know why. My heart goes out to all the victims past and present.
In Hawaii, my Catholic friends get very offended when anyone attacks their faith. They love the idea that they are forgiven just for confessing. Some are not very nice.
I give Latimer props for taking the moral high ground and fighting for all those that were abused as children by these priests. He was abused himself like so many.
