  • What does the Bible teach about the eternal security of believers? Can we believe and then fall away? Using verses from Hebrews 6 and 10, Luke 8, Galatians 5, Ephesians 5, 1 John 1, John 10, and Romans 8, Chad Bird explores this important question from a Law and Gospel perspective.

Perfect. A few years ago i was seeking the truth. I was asking my fellow Christians these questions and the only response i got was "just the fact that you are asking means you're saved". I thought that was a horrible answer. I kept seeking and then one day when i was listening to a sermon, God convicted my heart, opened my eyes and ears to hear the truth, and I was born again. I'm so glad I kept seeking. I rest in the perfect work of Jesus Christ and not my own works. My life changed forever. Thank you, Jesus.

Amen brother Bird! You hit on so many important points and supported them all with Scripture. Thank you for your clarity and encouragement on this issue. We can approach the throne of grace with confidence, and on the flip side, we must always self-reflect with sober judgment (Rom. 12:3). In this, we realize that we do not *identify* merely as sinners, but rather as God's adopted children who have been (and are still being) saved by His grace. That doesn't mean we do not sin, but rather that through faith and repentance, the blood of Jesus is continually being applied to us through His Spirit working within us. Sin no longer has reign over us unless we willingly reject Him and fall away.

The Hebrews 6 passage, as I read it, perfectly supports what you're talking about. It's a hypothetical, illustrating what the author was talking about regarding not laying again the foundation of repentance, of faith, or baptism, etc. He's talking to people who think they can yo-yo into and out of grace based on their behavior. And he's saying "No, it doesn't work like that. If you could fall away, there would be no coming back, because you that would mean Christ would need to die again, which is impossible." Implication being that someone truly saved cannot lose that salvation. The author of Hebrews is saying quit worrying about that, and move on into discipleship.

It can change how we view life or approach certain situations, but faith determines how we act when it gets down to the wire. So faith would include loyalty because it determines how we act (that is what loyalty does as well). So it's safe to say believe and have faith are all that's required for staying in the faith.

I can see where some of these scriptures can be taken out of context, but if I can mess my salvation up, then Christs sacrifice wasn't enough to save us from sin and satisfy God's wrath of sending us all to hell. Jesus would have to continuously die repeatedly over and over again in an endless time loop and we all would be headed to a devil's hell. None of us are good enough to be saved but through grace by faith we are made worthy because of him. I couldn't save myself and had to rely on him to save me therefore I can't undo what he has already done. It's not a free pass to live however we want and that is a stigma that fallen from Grace believers say that people that believe in eternal security believe and that's false.
Two more points-Paul was writing to the Galatians because of their observance of the law. This was something that Christs sacrifice had fulfilled. When he says ye have fallen from Grace he is not talking about salvation. He is saying that their observance of the law is making the grace way and Christs sacrifice of no effect. (Gal 5:3-4). Romans 8 shuts down fallen from grace doctrine. We are joint-heirs with christ. We get eternal life through Christ and his saving power. It is the free gift of salvation. An inheritance is a free gift. God doesn't take that away. The parable of the seed among the rocks is taken out of context. I can believe something but everyone forgets about faith. Believing in something and having faith are two different things. I have always believed in God but never had enough faith to serve him till I surrendered to him and let him save me.
    Lastly, 1 Cor 5:5 shouldn't be ignored.....

    • @RezG_777
      @RezG_777 4 месяца назад +2

Its funny how we say Christ's death wasn't enough if I have the choice to reject it. Meanwhile, we think it's fine that God chose the vast majority to be reprobate, where Christ's death wasn't enough to reach them...
Salvation is a rescue, not a resuscitation. We are all floating in the water, and God throws us an inner tube. Those who grab hold will be saved. Those who say, no, I am pleased in sin, will not be saved.
Now those being saved of course can let go of the safety ring. They can say never mind I'd rather live for this life, and not the next.
We are free moral agents, and God will never force Himself on anyone that doesn't have a desire for Him. There is a nasty word for that forced love, and we can never ascribe that to a Holy God.
Choose you this day whom you will serve. Inherent in that command is the ability to change your mind tomorrow.
The one who endures to the end will be saved. God bless.

    • @RezG_777
      @RezG_777 4 месяца назад

To your one point, the Bible also specifically says you cannot recrucify Jesus again and again once you fall away. So you are right that it would mean He would need to be crucified 'continuously'. But God specifically says it is impossible for then to be restored "because they themselves are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting Him to open shame." Instead, they are lost, having once known salvation and then turning away to their flesh again.

    • @timmacdonald3342
      @timmacdonald3342 4 месяца назад +3

@@RezG_777 So Heb 6 is very often used to try to prove fallen from Grace doctrine but is taken far out of context. It actually says the opposite. We need to remember Paul begins this scripture by reminding the Hebrews to not leave the principals and doctrines of christ. Here we have folks that were new converts and we have folks that were apostates/religious folks in their own beliefs. This is a very similar situation that Jesus was often presented with when going against the Pharisees and Saducees. The definition of an apostate is someone who rejects a religious or political belief. Those that were fallen away were the religious folks here that were never converted to begin with. Everyone who believes in fallen from grace ignores that Heb 6:4-6 says "[4] For it is IMPOSSIBLE for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [5] and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [6] if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance, seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. They are creating shame to the crucificxion of Jesus christ and his sacrifice by rejecting the principles of Jesus Christ and what his sacrifice was for. I can be enlightened or aware of many things but it doesn't mean that I believe it by faith. Paul said For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened talking about again, the religious apostates who won't deny themselves and take up the cross and follow Jesus.. Again, you either have it or you don't, but religion won't get you to heaven. You have to be saved by the grace of God. One last point I will make, we need to remember that if you are saved we are sinners saved by grace. Grace is undeserved favor. None of us are good enough to be saved and truthfully we deserve hell. But because of Gods longsuffering and mercy, and favor, he paved a way of escape from sin through his son's sacrifice. I couldn't save myself therefore I can't undo something he has already done or God is an imperfect God.

Kinda surprised with all his directness that he dodged the question "Can I lose my salvation?" That's a legitimate question with the definite answer, "no." If you have eternal life it cannot end or be lost. Reframing the question to whether salvation has me, doesn't change that. Neither does the different question, "Can I reject that salvation." He seems to say "yes" to the question "can i lose it" by pointing out that people reject it, but the classical answer to the rejection question is that they never had it (and rejected it), not that they had it for a little while and then rejected it. Dead faith that bears no fruit was never saving faith to begin with. I'm just surprised that he swung so close to that answer and missed it.
What does "once saved" mean? Either one is saved and has eternal life or they are in need of saving. Either you're credited as righteous by believing that Jesus became a curse for you, or you bear the curse for yourself. It's either or, grace as a gift for eternal life or else the wages of sin is death. So no, you cannot lose a credit God has gifted you by grace and promise. God never breaks his promises. That's the whole gist of Galatians. Those severed are those trusting not in Christ, but in the law, a very different kind of faith, and a different "gospel."

@@garretdale1506 God is all-knowing; He knew everything from beginning to end even before creation. Yet, He gave us free will, and it was through this free will that humanity chose to reject Him, bringing sin into the world. The death of Jesus Christ brought redemption, extending God’s grace to us through faith in Him. Just as God never forced us to love and obey Him, He still doesn’t today. We continue to have the free will to accept or reject Him.
This is why the doctrine of “once saved, always saved” is misleading and dangerous-it can lead many to complacency and, ultimately, to hell. Although God knows who will or will not enter heaven, we do not have that knowledge. This is why it’s crucial for us to remain vigilant and spiritually prepared. While I prefer to discuss these points from a common sense perspective, I’m happy to provide scriptural references if you’re interested.

@JamesKonie what did Jesus say in John chapter 3, you need to be reborn to enter the kingdom of heaven so not everyone will be saved. But when you are saved God will seal you with the Holy Spirit and change your heart so that you won't want to sin and will begin to respect God's moral laws. But don't think it's a free ticket to sin because it is not and God will punish you. He knows everything about us and He knows exactly how to deal with us.

One interesting question is “how many sins do we have to commit to lose our salvation?” From the vantage point of the cross, all our sins yesterday, today and tomorrow were in the future so the answer would be “none!” But for those who keep on sinning because they believe they have a “heavenly insurance policy”, the question would be if they were ever converted in the first place.

Very interesting perspective. And an excellent pastoral approach to this question. Personally, I don’t think the NT actually addresses the question of whether a born-again, Spirit-filled believer in the Lord Jesus Christ can lose their salvation. There are warnings not to fall away. Hebrews is full of them. But I’m not convinced that Hebrews is written primarily to Jewish Christians. I’m pretty convinced it’s written to the Jewish nation as a whole, which includes both saved and unsaved Jews. But I think both the warnings in Chapter 6 and Chapter 10 are warnings to the nation of Israel just prior to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD, not warnings to individual Christians. I think if you look at Chapters 3 and 4, the author is clearly warning the nation of Israel not to be like that generation of Israelites that escaped from Egypt, which was also a mixed multitude of both believers (Moses, Joshua, Caleb) and unbelievers (everyone else). I think the controversial passages in Chapter 6 and 10 are warning Israel about what will happen if they follow the example of that generation. Others point to passages in Galatians and 1 and 2 Corinthians that seem to suggest that people that commit certain sins cannot make it to heaven. But, in reality, those passages are taken out of context. Paul was not addressing the question we are trying to answer. I think in those cases Paul is really just drawing distinctions between the way the unsaved, Gentile world acts and how those in the church act. He isn’t really trying to explain how one loses their salvation.
Never does the NT specifically answer the question. Paul never says, “This is how a born-again, Spirit-filled believer in Christ can end up condemned for eternity.” And the NT never addresses the question of how someone can be unborn from the family of God. I just don’t really think there is a consistent, unambiguous, specific answer to that question in the NT. As Mr. Bird says in the video, there are clear warnings against falling away. But there is never any specific example of a specific individual that we are told was born again and completely trusting in Christ and saved, but sinned in some certain way and will spend eternity in condemnation as a result. There are examples in Acts and the NT epistles of believers that fall away, but we are never told that their eternity was in danger of condemnation. So, quite frankly, I think the message of the NT is to be faithful at all times. If you make a deliberate choice to live a consistent life of ungodliness and sin, then there is a definite problem. It may, in fact, be evidence that you were never born again or saved in the first place. But it might also be that you are a disobedient and worldly Christian. It is clear that God demands your repentance. But does that sin cause a born again believer to spend an eternity in condemnation? I don’t think we have a clear and unambiguous answer to that question.

    Great explanation in this video.
We always have free will. To remove that from the equation makes living in freedom irrelevant...am I free truly if I am not able to walk out the gift that God has given me? Paul related that I should understand the reality that I am dead to sin, and therefore should no longer live that old lifestyle out. But, I can always choose to walk away.
If I struggle with a sin problem then part of continuing to follow through with the fact that God's truth is in fact true is to say and live, "I am wrong and God is right." I then stand in grace that God is working on me, and I need His help to overcome. It is a battle that we will always face in this life. But sin does not keep us from God if we continue turning to Him for help. 1 John 1:9. I will overcome if I continue allowing God to help and cleanse me. The issue with willful sin is that there is the danger of becoming so cooled off in our walk with God, and so full of the sin (sin always grows like cancer) that we will not turn back or agree with God any longer. There is real power in Christ Jesus! So our focus needs to willfully transition from the way we used to think, to thinking like Jesus did while He walked here. As Paul related, it is a pressing forward, not an arrival - at least not here. 🙂 Great commentary!

Paul’s main message to the church in Galatia was that obedience to the Mosaic Law cannot save anyone; salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. He emphasized this point repeatedly in his letter to the Galatians to counter the false teaching that Gentile Christians needed to follow Jewish laws to be saved. For example, in Galatians 2:16, Paul writes, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ… for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”
Paul contrasts the works of the law with faith in Jesus. Faith is not just intellectual assent but involves a deep trust and commitment to Christ. James 2:17 reminds us that “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead,” which means true faith manifests in obedience to God’s will. In other words, believing in Jesus is inseparable from obeying His teachings.
The concept of “faith in Jesus” means trusting Him completely for our salvation and submitting to His lordship. When we place our faith in Jesus, we are declaring our trust in His sacrificial death and resurrection as the only means of reconciliation with God. However, this faith must be maintained and lived out continually. As Paul warns in Colossians 1:23, we are to continue “in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel.”
If we turn away from this faith-essentially losing our trust and commitment to Jesus-then we risk forfeiting our salvation. The idea that “once saved, always saved” is misleading because it suggests that our initial act of faith is all that matters, regardless of how we live afterward. However, Jesus Himself cautions against this false security in Matthew 7:21-23, saying, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven… I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”
The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is a dynamic relationship with Jesus that must be maintained through faith and obedience. Therefore, it’s essential to continue in faith, remain vigilant, and obey God’s will, as only those who persevere in faith until the end will be saved (Matthew 24:13).

The truth is not a system of works. It is a person. No one is justified by works before or after that is why we are told not to use our new eternal life as license. It is because we have license that that warning is given in Romans. Once saved always saved is not a controversial doctrine but a person, Jesus Christ.
Most Christians everywhere reject OSAS. They make fun of it as license to abuse grace. If you’ve looked at the OSAS documentary I think you will see an attitude that thinks we must run and strive to stay saved instead of resting in the finished work.

By the end of your presentation, I am convenced that you are right on. As Paul said in Romans 8:38 (KJV)
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul was speaking to true believers in this scripture. To simplify the salvation message when Jesus gave his life on the Cross, He paid the sin debt for the whole world. Therefore, if a person goes to Heaven, it won't be because they lived a sinless life. It will be because they believed on the only begotten son of God. And if a person goes to Hell it wont be because they sinned a lot, it will be because they rejected Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
Notwithstanding, it takes Real commitment for a person to be saved. Not just a head belief, for even the devils believe and tremble. It takes a real heart belief to be saved. Romans 10:9 (KJV)
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

It has never been addressed because no individual who is actually saved can think such a thing due to the Holy Spirit bringing them to salvation.
Paul did mentioned should we keep sinning due to grace in Romans 6 but losing your salvation was not mentioned there because losing your salvation was not even thought of… no saved person will ever think of living in sin because they are eternally secure. Only a depraved mind would entertain that thought. Since people’s opinion of the Holy Spirit and the power of the cross is weak, and because they hold an erroneous concept of how one comes to be saved, they struggle with the concept of eternal salvation

“Also I will make him my firstborn, Higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, And my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, And his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law, And walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, Nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, And his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon, And as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.”

The teaching of Galatians 5 is concerning the difference between the living in bondages under the law and being free in Christ. This whole chapter has nothing to do with losing your salvation nor keeping it. It has nothing to do with salvation at all but on living in freedom thru faith in CHRIST, which is in Grace. Falling from Grace is not losing your salvation but the grace of living law free thru faith in Christ.

@ChadBird1517 How would you fit in the picture of being born again? Can someone be born again and then die again? Or is being born again a resurrection picture? Similarly, 2 Cor 5:17, if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation. Is this a permanent one time occurrence or a future event, or can one who is new/born again, now never turn away?

Chad, an admonishment: you are horrendously interpreting Hebrews 10:26. This verse is to unbelievers, Hebrew unbelievers, who had a KNOWLEDGE of the truth (not embracing the truth, believing the truth). And, the sacrifice for sins no longer remaining is talking about the sacrifice of bulls & goats. The first 9 verses of Hebrews 10 alludes to sacrifices of bulls & goats. Hebrews 10:10 tells of the sacrifice of Jesus. Nothing to do to "warn" Christians. You are making stuff up.
Likewise, in Hebrews 6:5,6 those have been enlightened, partakers of the Holy Spirit (seen miracles), tasted the heavenly gift (not swallowed) & then fallen away (not believed, hardened their hearts). Not believers falling away.
2 Timothy 2:15: Study to show yourself approved unto God, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
Please study in depth before putting out erroneous videos. Salvation cannot be lost.

So? No answer. Answered both ways.
I mean no disrespect to anyone, especially this pastor. He at least tried to answer the question. The once saved always saved belief is very dangerous speaking from my personal experience. I went to the altar as a young man, confessed my sins, my life from that point on had shown NO change, I was still of the world. People will say, "then you really didn't mean it!" First, how do you know, second I was truly of the repentant heart and do/did believe in Christ and what He did for me, so yes! I meant it.
The problem was, I believed "once I was saved, I was always saved!" That thought came from the world AKA the devil, saying or making me believe God was a folksy old grandpa, setting on His front porch, waiting on me to come home now that I had made my confession, no matter how I behaved, and let me say,"NONE of that was true." God will not be mocked and He will NOT be reduced to our level of humanity and have our thoughts/feelings. God is Sovereign, He is HOLY/PURE/Unblemished/True/Perfect in every way, I could go on but the point is He is NOTHING like anything we have ever seen.
Just be careful believing that once you've repented and ask Christ into your heart that you don't forget He is there, and that the Father is actually perfect and the WE as Christians are supposed to "Be ye perfect" or at least strive too even though we know we can't. Our works doesn't get us to the Father, Jesus did that, but our works separates us from the rest of the world we are to be shown as NOT OF THE WORLD.
Remember, be in the world... not of the world.
The idea of once saved always saved can give you the false confidence that you can do as you please..... if you're a Follower of Jesus Christ, you can't!
Thats just my take on this subject.

The answer is clear. What matters is whether you’re proclaiming law or Gospel. Can you fall away? Yes. That’s the law. Does God keep his people in salvation? Yes. That’s the Gospel. We live in the dual reality of both of these words from God. Far from “no answer,” this is God’s consistent answer, OT and NT.

There will be many that miss heaven because they trust in themselves and their ability to keep commandments rather than completely trusting in Christ and his work

If you understand what it says it's not about salvation but a step towards it. What Paul is saying is we have to diminish to our old man and Christ has to increase in us. John the baptizer said the same thing right before Jesus showed up to be baptized. "One comes whom sandals I'm not worthy to loose." This what it means to become a new creation. It will be recognizable. Paul after his conversion still brought fear to the early Christians. "Isn't this the same man who wanted to throw us into prison." Eventually they recognized the change in Paul and that he was no longer the old "Saul". In the original church one adopted a new name that represented the new person we become (called their Christian name - when infants were baptized they would be given that Christian name. This why our first name became known as our Christian name. FYI

The Apostles as today's pastors cant see One's heart. They can only judge their fruit, So just like today, Not everyone in the church is saved. These are those who 'fall away' and 'leave the faith' The scriptures are very Clear, Jesus's own words are Clear - OSAS.
Jesus explains those in question =
Matthew 13:20 The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he remains for only a season. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away
How long can the season be?
John 10:26But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe. 27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. ----- I stand with Jesus and find Peace in the fact that no matter what.I am His

This is not a complicated or controversial topic. Once a person is saved he/she is saved and sealed and “no man shall pluck them from My hand”. The question is NOT if a person can lose their salvation as this would require maintaining one’s salvation which is clearly unbiblical as our salvation would partially depend on our works. Secondly, at the beginning of the millennial kingdom many will come before Jesus claiming to have done many things in His name-and the connotations that they really believed that they were saved and were blinded to their own sin-and Jesus casts them aside because He “never knew them”. So yes once saved always saved is completely biblical and the only option so the real question is is a person really saved or better, instead of their knowing God does God know them? This is evidenced by their works not earned or maintained. Now there will be many in Heaven who God knows but they have no fruit. Several characters in the Bible such as Samson, all of the generations from Abraham to Benjamin, displayed lives where Scripture doesn’t describe one good thing they did. This is where the bema seat comes in and the loss of reward is an eternal state which is designated for the carnal Christian not because they knew God but because God knew them and saved them in spite of. This is the mystery of salvation.

Saying that a person who has once given his life to christ, walked with him and then can't be deceived into living a life of sin is disingenuous. Ive seen it more times than I can count. Faith in christs finished work is how we are saved. If we dont continue in that faith we live in unbelief. No it's not by works. but it is by faith. Faith is shown by works. Otherwise it's not faith at all. Don't be deceived those who live in sin are not children of God. Nor do they know him.

'All things are possible' relate to the saving grace of God the Father, know that none were able to save themselves through keeping the law, but God made it possible through Christ Jesus unto salvation. It's not an insurance, but in Christ, we have received the assurance by the baptism into the Body of Christ and his indwelling Holy Spirit to work in the righteousness of Christ!!!!

That doesn't really answer the question. The real question is this: Can a regenerated, new creation be de-regenerated and somehow be formed again into the old, passed away creation? I don't see how. The Bible certainly never gives an example of it.

In 1John 3:6, when it says (Whoever abides in Him does not sin), that's talking about our (new man), our new man does not sin. When it says (Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor knows Him) that's talking about the person that's not saved.

26For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

This proves you dont believe in the finished work of Christ. You believe Christ did not die for all sin. Your doctrine has no eternal life in it because its based on our performance. Brother Chad.
