Ever been to an Italian soccer match or a local feasta and wished you could join in with the national anthem? Or perhaps you've listened to it and wondered what it's all about. The reason is quite interesting. It has nothing to do with the players but it's only with the National Anthem.

It's not absolutely true that the lyrics make no sense. The full version makes everything more clear. It's a celebration of the united Italy going back to the roman origins (the first part which is the one we sing) and then to the Risorgimento battles. It has a LOT of meaning

Goffredo Mameli the author of the lyrics of "Il Canto degli Italiani", the national anthem of Italy , was wounded by the French while fighting in defence of the Republic of Rome on June 1849 and died one month later from gangrene at the age of 21.
When he wrote “we are ready to die” he really meant it.

Credo che l'inno sia tornato in voga anche perché piano piano tutti hanno realizzato che quel "Sì" finale, aggiunto chissà come, gridato e urlato al colmo del crescendo del canto, è il perfetto riassunto di tutta la carica agonistica che gli atleti vogliono raggiungere.
In contrapposizione alle note introduttive, senza canto, che quasi speriamo passino in fretta perché vogliamo iniziare a cantare :D

Scipio is the general that lead Rome to victory during the punic wars (against Hannibales and city of Carthage) I just don't see how anyone scholarized could not know that, particularly in Italy

Well, actually, the meaning is not so weird as we Italians consider ourselves the sons of the Roman Empire and all the references to it are not casuals: Scipio's helmet is related to Scipio, who won against Carthago extablishing Rome's power over the Mediterranean, and the fact that God has created Victory to be slave of Rome is a reference to the greatness of the Roman Empire! For us this anthem is really special and singing it is a way to feel ourselves united!

Above all, Scipio is the general who freed Italy from the Carthaginian invasion. The quote from Scipio is not accidental. Even in that historical period, a foreign army had invaded Italy trying to dominate it ... that situation was similar to Italy in the 19th century with the Austrian occupation of Milan and Venice. Therefore the Italians had to liberate Italy as Scipio did. References to ancient Rome had no imperialist significance in Italy at the time. On the contrary, the ancient Roman Republic was seen as a model for restoring political freedoms in Italy, for the social and economic progress of the reunified nation, and for living in peace and harmony with other nations.
The Italian anthem is full of historical and cultural references. The full version is much loger and tells about the desire to unite Italy (divided when it was written) into a single big nation.

The Italian anthem was written by a young patriot, Goffredo Mameli, in 1847 because he felt that Italy was finally ready (awake) to be a single nation.
Start by saying:
"Brothers of Italy, Italy is awake" (the time has come, Italy is ready to fight for its sovereignty)

The goddess Victoria represented as a woman with long hair, should therefore offer her hair to be cut as a sign of submission to Rome: the meaning of this sentence is Mameli's certainty that, in the event of an uprising against the Austrians, Victory will not it could only be Italians because it is destiny that so wills.

In this verse Mameli interprets the political plan of the founder of "Giovine Italia": that of achieving, through the union of all the Italian states, the realization of the republic. "Per Dio" is a Frenchism which means "through God", "by God", here understood as a supporter of oppressed peoples.

The event referred to by Mameli is that of the "Sicilian Vespers": name given to the movement for which Sicily rose after 16 years of Angevin (French) dominion and gave itself to the Aragonese (Spanish). At Vespers on Easter Monday on March 31, 1282, all the bells rang out to urge the people of Palermo to insurrection against the French.

Austria of the Habsburgs (of which the double-headed eagle was the imperial symbol) was in decline (the swords sold are the mercenary troops of which the imperial army was full) and Mameli calls the people one last time to gather italics to give the coup de grace to the Austrian domination with a parallelism with Poland. Between 1772 and 1795, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, together with Russia (the "Cosacco") had invaded Poland. But the blood of the two oppressed peoples, the Italian and the Pole, can turn into poison through the uprising against the foreign oppressor.
In the original version of the hymn, the first verse of the first verse read "Evviva l'Italia", Mameli then changed it to "Fratelli d'Italia" almost certainly at the suggestion of Michele Novaro himself. The latter, when he received the manuscript, also added a boisterous "Si!" at the end of the chorus sung after the last verse.
There are two autographed manuscripts that have come down to the present day: the first, the original one linked to the first draft, is located at the Istituto Mazzini di Genova, while the second, the one sent by Mameli on 10 November 1847 to Novaro, is kept in the Museo del Risorgimento di Torino. The autographed manuscript that Novaro sent to the publisher Francesco Lucca is instead located in Milano, in the Archivio Storico Ricordi in Milano.
For decades there has been debate at government and parliamentary level on the need to make the Canto degli Italiani, the anthem of the Italian Republic, without however reaching the approval of a law or a constitutional amendment that sanctioned the state of affairs, also recognized in all institutional offices, until 4 December 2017.
On 30 December 2017, La Repubblica recognizes the text of Goffredo Mameli's «Canto degli italiani» and the original musical score of Michele Novaro as its national anthem.
Unfortunately, however, the implementing decree is still missing.
Incredibly, for 71 years, 'Fratelli d'Italia' has been provisional: since, on 12 October 1946, the Council of Ministers - then led by Alcide De Gasperi - "on the proposal of the Minister of War", established that as a national anthem for the ceremony of the oath of the Armed Forces of the following November 4: but, in fact, "provisionally". Three legislatures in these 71 years (the 14th, 15th and 16th) have tried to give the hymn the dignity of law, but all the projects presented have begun parliamentary examination, without however ever being approved.

I think it is a combination of the pride of the Italian people and the rhythmic and musical structure of the anthem itself. I myself find this anthem one of the most uplifting in terms of rhythm. Italian's do this right. That's how a national anthem should be sung. I saw them and even though I'm Eastern European I got somehow water in the eyes because everyone understands the love for the country.
Italian here. I can't really tell why we love it so much. But we do. Since elementary school we all become obsessed with it i guess. Especially because at the very end you must scream "yes" and it's so liberating. I joined all matches well in advance this year in order to sing the anthem with the team, I can't miss the moment, and every time, every time, I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes. It's so beautiful, it makes you feel like you are part of something you should be proud for.

I'm a Muslim Malaysians and I say keep that alive for eternal times. Today, especially in Europe there are so many things, factors, movements trying to make Europeans be less proud of their origins and their achievements. Just look at countries like France, UK, Germany. If only they're as proud Europeans as the Italians.

Gianmarco Ripani - Purtroppo non lo credo molto. LA maggior parte degli italiani quando canta l'inno pensa che l'Italia sia nata da Iddio: sbagliato. E' la Vittoria che è stata creata da Dio come schiava di Roma. Concetto molto più profondo. L'talia come ho già detto all'inizio dei miei interventi viene detta invincibile perché Iddio ha creato come sua schiava la Vittoria che le deve porgere la chioma in segno di sottomissione. Riguardati i commenti all'inizio dei posts. Siamo poi realmente disposti a morire per la patria? L'unico inno, scritto pressappoco nello stesso periodo del nostro, che non fa appello alla morte è quello francese. The second verse is much quieter and represents the people, scared and incredulous. The last one are the people getting courage and say: let’s come together and fight and die for our country. For example, here nobody gives a shit about the swiss anthem because it's nothing but an old prayer that tells nothing about the country or its people. So players don't sing it because nobody really cares and very few people actually know the whole lyrics. SO, here's a part of the story about players singing our anthem:
Italian players have never been used to sing it for decades. In fact, they didn't sing it at all. This generated some controversies from time to time but it wasn't such a big deal. We (as Italian supporters) envied a little bit other nations with more passionate players but that was it. The change of pace happened right before the 2006 World Cup. The big scandal concerning italian football (and some minor scandals before) mined the National Team credibility in the eyes of italian people, but the guys in the squad really wanted to demonstrate with fact that they were, in fact, representing our Country when playing. That they were united as one and ready to fight for the credibility of our football. And what better way than to sing our anthem out loud?
It was a pretty fortunate event considering that it happened right before winning it all in 2006, and I guess that helped to cement that new habbit. After 15 years it's still there, luckily

This is probably because I read old stuff a lot, but those lyrics make perfect sense to me. I thought Italia's national anthem was cool; now I'm in love with it. How can one not be fired up by those words? I'd take up Italian citizenship just for that anthem lol.

As an Italian military, but above all as an Italian citizen, since I was a kid, I have always loved our anthem. Still, every single time I hear it, I get excited and sparkle in my eyes, sometimes even a few small tears fall. Really, I don't understand why other nations don't have this feeling towards their own anthem.

Molti inni nazionali sono marce reali che non coinvolgono direttamente i popoli dei rispettivi paesi. Il nostro inno invece lo fa: è stato composto durante il Risorgimento PER il Risorgimento, e non piaceva alla monarchia e al fascismo (infatti anche qua si usava la marcia reale come inno). Secondo me, la fine della monarchia e del fascismo ha dato una grossa spinta alla nostra passione per il nostro inno.
Gli unici che lo "sentono" come noi sono i francesi, probabilmente. E infatti é l'unico inno nazionale carico di passione come il nostro

Well, if you were studying the history of the Roman Empire you wouldn't say that. If you stop at World War II you will not understand anything. It does not make sense? Before making a historical video you spend hours doing research and studying, you didn't do it because otherwise you would know the meaning and that Italy was divided. The fact that it was called means that it was time to found the country, united as it was in the days of Rome.

There are only 2 Anthems that give me goosebumps everytime I sing them: Irish (Amhrán na bhFiann) and the Italian (Inno di Mameli). And I sang this with gusto on Sunday. I'd say I love both as they were written during times of struggle and the lyrics have such meaning and once you understand what you are singing, it does bring emotion. I doubt they will ever change it. It means so much to the people and even if you don't understand it, you can see the passion and pride. Forza Italia 🇮🇹 e Irlanda 🇮🇪

It has many references to italic history and not the Italian one. This because when it was written Italy was not a real nation, it was divided into many dominations and governed by foreigns countries by centuries like Austria and Spain. But this feelings of freedom and indipendente was really strong in 19th century and it was a sort of recall of the myth of old Roman empire of firsts century after Christ.
Fun fact: italian national team in wc1994 was critized at the time for NO singing the anthem...

*Alternative explanation* : Italians player are actually born and raised in Italy (unlike France or the rest of western european nations teams)😂Their anthem actually means something for them.
To be honest, the anthem has way more coherence than some poems I've had to study in high school
I think we scream our anthem because the rhythm is increasing, but I personally do it also because the anthem is about the Italian wars of independence and the full version contains several references to battles for independence such as the Genoa revolt or the battle of Legnano and the same author of the hymn (Mameli) died at the age of 22 fighting for national unity; but also because Italy has been disunited and occupied by foreign powers for 13 centuries since it was the main Roman province (the only province in which the inhabitants had citizenship for most of Roman history). So to me this hymn is like the scream of someone who has been oppressed for so long and is now free, and I think I'm not the only one who sees it that way.

All correct, but Italy was not a province. Italy was the metropole of Rome: it was a state, basically. Indeed a famous Roman saying " Italia non erat provincia, sed domina provinciarum". "Domina provinciarum" means Ruler of the provinces. Another epithet was "Rectrix mundi" (the one who sustains the world).
I cried even just seeing the text of my hymn in English. For centuries we have been hindered by other European powers who did not want a unitary state in the Mediterranean. We have won independence by paying with blood, every family paid with blood not even 100 years ago.
And their fight goes on to this day.

Two things: in the late 90s early 2000s the media used to criticise our players because they didn’t sing the anthem. The boys either didn’t know the words or didn’t bother to sing loudly. After years of accusations of not being patriotic enough, they slowly started singing more and more loudly as well as putting their arms around each other’s shoulders.
The other thing is that a big part of the passion you feel and is captured by photos is the “SÌ” at the end, which make our players scream. Well, that “sì” (yes) isn’t officially part of the lyrics😅

Only after Ciampi's presidence (1999-2005) the italian anthem was brought to the top, before of that period it was just the "song" played before ceremonies and not something related to the passion or the pride to be italian. In those years the "canto degli italiani" was taught and studied at schools and then sung proudly and loudly in stadiums and even circuits (one of my best infance memories is Schumacher directing a fake orchestra during the execution of our anthem)

This is the worst explanation of the italian anthem I've ever seen, and in 29 years I've never heard a politician actively "wanting to get rid of it", nor it's true that "people don't understand it" because, surprise surprise, italians study history at school.

The fact is that the Italian words used for the anthem are quite archaic and a lot of them belong to the military language, so it is quite difficult to understand for Italians too

The lyrics refer to events that are not obscure at all, in fact they are so important that we study them in History classes in school, and they have a LOT of sense, especially if we think about the whole unification process, for which a lot of people died! So obviously we do care about the meaning of said lyrics, quite a LOT, to the point that we sing them very loud and clear ❤️
