    The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

      It can be frustrating to train any dog. But it's particularly frustrating and challenging with reactive and/or fearful dogs. We've got an adolescent at home right now, and I am constantly having to remind myself "teenager; she's supposed to push boundaries and "forget" what I've taught her".

    This series has been life-changing. My dog is a 60 lb Catahoula/pit mix rescue. She's had MAJOR behavior and reactivity issues. My dog even started exhibiting more aggressive behavior after she was introduced to a prong collar. While all training must have consistency, utilizing Zak's methods allowed me to see every minute as a training session because it's practical and makes sense. Training this dog has been harder than raising a kid. The trainer told me not to use a harness but it works so much better for her! The trainer told me NOT to walk or play with her before our sessions so he could always observe her at her worst. That didn't make sense to me. My dog started not wanting any leash or lead. She knew it meant "training time." Now she's been bringing me the leash for last week just begging to go out to explore the world (and doing so in a much more socially acceptable manner). Thanks, Zak.

      Melissa I agree with you. Zak is a good trainer. Some tactics take longer than others. Also, it is ok to employ every tool you need to, as long as you are working with the dog . I had to have my beautiful pit mix euthanized a few weeks ago because she got away from me and attacked a dog. I regularly worked on her reactivity to dogs from the time she was a puppy. I had 2 different trainers, with the second being an expensive ecollar program. The ecollar trainer told me to rely on the ecollar, but I had to run her with a harness, the ecollar and a star mark pinch collar to keep her from pulling me over. I also went early in the morning to avoid seeing any other dogs. It was something that I couldnt train out of her.
      I am now fostering-to-adopt a Shepherd-Lab mix from the shelter who thankfully is not dog reactive. But she is reactive to men. Zack's tactics are working with her. It is slow and steady.

      Yes, I'd like to see Zak work with a small dog, as well. We now have a small breed dog and I'm finding I've had to adjust my training a lot. I've found it's actually easier (physically) to train a larger dog. Training my itty-bitty, I'm bending, stooping, and sitting on the floor much more often. And my itty-bitty doesn't seem to be "getting" the entire concept of house training and I never had a problem with the big dogs grasping the concept of "go outside to pee/poop".

    I love how you have been taking the time to explain throughout this series why you aren't using choke, prong, or E-collars on Moria. I train dogs with the positive reinforcement training methods, and I love to hear you say why you prefer to use them over force, corrections, or negative consequences. You are truly training the dog when it figures out for itself that it is better to pay attention to you instead of reacting to its surroundings or other living things. I have loved this series. Thank you for taking on such a challenging dog so that people like me can learn how to train them with positive training methods!

    I would love to see a video about what the follow-up plan is for Moira. Spending significant time on training her is exactly what she needs - but the reality is most families don't have that much time or education to train a dog like Moira. If she stayed with Zak I'm sure she would progress and eventually be able to lower her reactivity. What's a realistic follow-up plan or recommendations to make sure her forever family is able to continue to see progress. This is coming from a Reactive German Shephard dog momma and is meant in kindness. I've seen too many dogs like Moira returned to the shelter because of regression. Just wondering what Zak would be able to do to help make sure that doesn't happen.

Lack of consistency or clarity is rough on the dog, I wouldn't want that on their best day.

    Interesting to watch. I have a lot of experience with GSD's , and we have just picked up a nearly 3 year old rescue who is like Moira on steroids. And a dog! He has had some good training before, and gets a lot right. But he "has a Moira" when taken to the vets, guarding the car boot, guarding a bench seat on a walk, sitting at a table in a bar, and (some) other dogs whilst on a lead. We have sorted out the home environment, and are making glacial progress on the other stuff. Zac's example has been a big help.

    Throughout this series you've been saying "I've only got two weeks to train this dog so that someone will be willing to adopt her." Two weeks is quite the challenge for helping a reactive dog overcome their excitement over seeing other dogs, especially if fear and aggression is involved. I understand that's not the case with Moira. As I understand it, she just wants to meet the other dogs. Of course, the biggest fear here is that she will cause a fearful or protective dog to attack her. I'm just wondering what would happen if it takes longer than two weeks. Is there any reason you couldn't get an extension for her training?

    • @ceciliayang3868

      I think the shelter only allows them to work with her for two weeks?

    • @someembarrassingLPs
      @someembarrassingLPs 3 года назад +3

      It might be a situation where he is being paid by the shelter to do a "board and train" with Moira, and they can't afford to compensate for more than 2 weeks. It may also be that Zak had prior engagements with other dogs or other board and trains booked beyond the 2 weeks given.

    • @carolynvines2027

    • @someembarrassingLPs

      @@carolynvines2027 I think if it were a situation where Moira had aggression towards other dogs, and by the end of the two weeks she was still not manageable for the average owner, a good trainer might recommend an extension or a very specific home. At least that's what I would do if I were in that situation. But usually 2 weeks is just to get the dog to a manageable state so it can be trained or continue to train with the average owner rather than needing a professional to handle it. Anyone expecting a full turnaround in two weeks, especially if the dog is actually aggressive, is expecting too much.

      You can be both! You can be a "veterinary behaviorist". These are folks are attend veterinary school and are vets, but then they go to additional training to learn all about behavior. If I were younger, that's what I'd do with my life. Veterinary behaviorists are the best and they can take "total" care of a dog--both from a medical stand point and from a behavioral one.
