I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

Be proud you admitted to yourself you and the dog weren’t in the state to continue. You didn’t push the situation where you both get overwhelmed to the point where things get worse where something more severe you regret and may dwell on happens. That is a good training skill. Know your limits and your mood...are making the activity unpleasant try again later. A lot of people push to the point they lose their patience.....not good. Quitting is training also.

I have a “Moira”. She’s a German Shepherd and we rescued her at 18 months old from a shelter. When we got her, she had no idea what we were doing when we pet her, she was a flight risk (easily scales 6 ft fences) and was baffled by all indoor appliances.
She has come a long way but is very distracted on walks and is very reactive to other animals and sometimes people while on walks. She isn’t aggressive, just really excited. This video series is exactly what we’ve been needing. She is a great dog and will be even better after we implement the skills you teach in this video!

He pulls on leash so suddenly and hard that he pulls me right over and drags me; I used a Halti for awhile (after conditioning to it) but he pulls on it so hard it made the bridge of his nose sore, so we have been stuck in the house for 2 weeks while it heals--can't even let him off leash in the yard to play fetch because he jumped the fence. My kids are watching Frozen I while I watch this, and I'm thinking how would Zak George approach Elsa's reactivity with her magic powers? He wouldn't have kept her away from the world like her parents did, but instead, would've trained her to manage her urges first where she is far enough away from people, slowly working towards a neighborhood setting and lastly to an off-glove in the house.

The GSD I have now is a very strong 85lb 8 month old, who LOVES to pull, much more than my other pups. I've incorporated some of your ideas on how to help stop this by redirecting & the "Look at me" is always good to use 😊 He's not perfect (yet! lol), but then neither am I, so we're both learning together (He's smarter than I am but I'm sneakier 😊!!). Ya it’s one thing to make a video of someone telling you what to do. But how you show the audience what your doing why your doing it and things to look for etc is fantastic. I have a Belgian malinois Siberian husky rescue dog named Ruger. He’s very reactive towards certain people, dogs and bikes. However he has never been aggressive with family and friends dogs. He’s just very high energy super pumped to see dogs. He’s really smart and anything I tend to teach him he picks up on really quick. However he does bark a lot at people walking in the back lane, and some people have even thrown things at him. I’ve figured out his distance where he will focus on me and in the backyard we can hold him back and he will stay but as soon as u let him go he’s storming the fence😂. Great advice with the dog park idea. That’s going to help me huge, but also to he does get overwhelmed, I just didn’t realize how sensitive it was. Thanks for helping me understand my dog even more! Btw he acts exactly like Mira.

My dog was so leash reactive that he used to bark and lunge at people that he spotted no matter the distance. Nothing stopped him from lunging for people, other dogs, children and vehicles. He was not socialized correctly before we got him, he had been exposed to everything most likely too much too soon to a point where he was reactive towards everything. He used to not respond to any sort of distraction, so I eventually got him a gentle lead. That gentle lead helped me so so so so much. It helped him so so so so much. To this day we are able to pass by people and other dogs and he's even in training to be a service dog

One thing I've found helpful in all your videos, not just these, is the emphasis on letting the dog adjust to a new environment instead of immediately making demands and expecting perfect behavior. It would be like asking a child, or even an adult, to not look anywhere but straight ahead when being in a new place for the first time. It's easy to forget that a place we're familiar with can be very exciting, interesting, or scary to a dog the first few times. These videos are a great reminder to be mindful of how the dog is feeling and not expect them to be a robot

Excellent training video. I have used very similar techniques with a 5 year old rescue Staffy Boxer cross. He was highly reactive to a lot of things and extremely reactive to any dog in sight(Like Moria reacted), no matter how far away they were. Now I can get to within 15 ft of other dogs before he sometimes starts with unwanted behaviour, in which I then create a bit more distance and get him to start focusing on my commands. It has took a lot of work but has paid off with the results, he is much calmer and still making improvements.

One the other night with fireworks she seems to have recovered from pretty quickly, but when she was younger in the middle of the night we had her on leash going potty in the middle of the night and a neighbors dog was also out and came running up at super high speed and scared the crap out of our GSD (Luna). She is now afraid of dogs. Mira behaves 100% exactly as Luna, so we have our hands full. So tonight I had both dogs out for a walk and a large pit bull down the road I noticed was out loose so I decided to go a different route, but the pitbull ran up on Luna and was all over her and she tried to bite him it was very harrowing and the pit bull wouldnt leave her alone and I was trying to pick her up and hold her mouth close, all while holding my other dog on the leash. Finally the owner heard Luna crying out in fear, and came and got his dog, which he couldnt catch or get back on the leash but at least he got him home. Very bad experience but Luna seems to be ok and getting over it . She has had Giardia so I cant take her to the dog park. So hard to socialize her at this time.

Maybe like once between each of your series you could just take a day of training and just play and hang out with them, maybe tell us like your daily routine with them and just have fun!! (if u can ofc)

Your dog tends to be aggressive more on the leash because with fight or flight mode, flight has has been taken out of the equation from the get go, leaving ony fight. Tense moments.

Hi Zak, thank you for the video series.
CAN YOU PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO A SERIES ON SHY (slightly SHUT DOWN DOGS)?
Shy dogs (regardless of reason) are so hard for us fosters to KNOW how to engage/interact with them! They take up time where we make zero progress which results in less dogs in rescue due to lack of foster home space; if we could breakthrough to these dogs quicker, we could save more in the long run.

      get a cat or fish

    • @kazwhitehouse5155
      @kazwhitehouse5155 3 года назад +6

@@briansculler8677 ROFL My opinion; 3-4 hours is excessive... and you wouldn't do this with very young or old dogs. Would also need to consider the walking surface and the temperature. Would you not also factor in separate engagement work and varied mental stimulation exercises? Just my thoughts...

I have a Standard Poodle. He doesn't care about the weather. The same with Huskies & German Shepherds... They are working/hunting dogs.
Of course, if you have a Pug, they hate bad weather, and after 20-30min they want to go home.
      And education is very hard.
It's like making an ADHD kid behave in Class.
So if you have a large hunting/working breed you need to walk them which is part of Exercise & Training & Socialization - You will meet other dogs, and you will throw a ball/stick, & you will do all the commands...
      *
You do basically think that 1-2 hours a day is enough for a dog?
I think in Prison they exercise more.
And your dog cannot do pushups at home.
Well, Cesar Millan suggests using a treadmill as an alternative to long walks.
But dogs need to socialize as well.
      *
      So no dude.
      Dogs need min 3 hours.
I walk my dog for 3-4 hours b/c he is already 9 years old.
He is definitely slower. He is ok with the shorter walks.
      FYI:
I don't want to go out!
      It's hard & I don't have time for it.
But it's my dog, my family - I have to do that for him.

@@briansculler8677 Hi again firstly thanks for calling me dude (I'm a middle aged woman and that makes me feel quite young). Thanks for explaining your rationale I didn't hear that from your first comment. I do applaud you for being such a responsible dog owner. There is a global issue with people getting dogs and not meeting the needs of the dogs only their expecting the dog to meet theirs. I do agree that breed type does affect exercise requirements and people should not get working breeds if they cannot commit as required. When I referred to weather I was thinking of very hot climates and walking on pavements (sidewalks in American) and paw pads etc. I will not make any comment regarding Cesar Milan as I do not consider him a dog trainer.
I can advise that in the UK prisoners have 1 hour exercise (if lucky) per day.
You asked if I thought 2 hours per day was enough. My reply is that I adjust the type of dog I have (adoption rather than purchase) to fit what I can reasonably manage. However I do stand by my earlier comment regarding walks not being the only exercise (but of course you should walk your dog (and no running around a large garden on their own is not good enough) ie mental exercise, additional command / trick training, scent training. Object naming games, assistance dog type training etc. Being an additional and critical element in the dogs life. But again this takes time and commitment. Kind regards.

That's a really great video, and i didn't knew about all those episodes before seeing this one. The thing is, i can't really do any of this with my reactive dog, she's yet a pup, but she really go for the fight when any dog or moving animal enter in her field of vision. I will see all of the episodes, but i will also ask anyway now, even if i find a answer in them. Shitara is a obedient dog, she can handle all kinds of distractions, and will obey, walk on a loose leash and even of one in places where there's any dogs close, yet all the focus just dissapears when she sees one, you can talk, offer food, anything take her eyes off the other dog and all you can do, at least me, is drag her away until she can not see it, and calm dow. I can hold her and alwas walk with a muzzle, yet im a "small" girl. I could handle her sister reactions, Athena have playful reactions and will regain focus with food or toys, but i just tried a lot of different things with Shitara and nothing seems to work. Our street have dogs in almost every house, so walk here with her is just impossible, we normally drive a long way to fields and quiet places to walk both of them, because of Shitara, but again, any dog and all goes down. Any help or sugestions would be great. I really tried to walk her today, it was a disaster and both of us just got full of stress and frustation.

My GSD acts like Moira and unfortunately she only respected her former owner (walked perfectly at his left). Her favorite activity is to torpedo me, bite me, and knock me down. Obediently comes only if my fist has a treat, perfectly housebroken, plays fetch catching the ball in mid air and brings it to me, and will sit on command. Pulls on leash dislocating my arm if she sees a squirrel (or my cat), so I walk her at night when squirrels are asleep. I really think with GSDs, it's all about respect and they know instinctively who the Alpha leaders are, and Zak, his wife, and me are obviously not,.

I have watched a few videos about reactive dogs, but they all seem to tackle the dog barking, or lunging at another dog. Our dog simply stops dead in his tracks; he can spot a dog from quite a distance and initially he will just stop what he is doing and watch. He will respond to some distraction with food/toys, but as the dog gets closer or he refuses to engage with the distractions, he will plant himself on the floor. You cannot move him at this point; the only (positive) release is to wait (sometimes a very long time!) for the dog to eventually pass, or disappear completely from view. I'm not finding many (any) videos that cover this behaviour

My dog is a golden doodle and he can get super reactive around other dogs, usually if they get too close. I always immediately change direction and put distance but there are times when I can’t get his attention back on me. Someone in public commented on his behavior and it was embarrassing bc he’s not vicious, he’s not out for blood, he just gets loud, tail is wagging the whole time.
I’m watching these videos to see what else I can do bc I want to enjoy taking him places. He does great at home, heels well, loose leash, all the things. Once we get in certain environments it’s a crapshoot and very unpredictable, which makes me nervous. Hoping I can learn how to change this, thanks for the info!

these videos are helping a lot. my rescue is reactive to some dogs and not others. what is going on through her brain? most times I put distance and can distract her with treats if she does not go over her threshold - which I can detect: fixed glare, stiffness, licking lips and ultimately barking/lunging. But I fear the treats might reinforce this? Or do they build on the association of -other dog = good treats are coming?
