On Saturday 18th of July Apollo 16 astronaut General Charlie Duke attended the opening of the Gateway to Space exhibition in Brussels where we had a virtual reality installation of our upcoming Apollo 11 Virtual Reality Experience.
    www.immersivevreducation.com
    www.expo-space.be
General Charlie Duke walked on the moon in 1972 and was lunar module pilot for the Apollo 16 mission where he spent three days on the moons surface. General Duke also served as CAPCOM for Apollo 11, the first landing on the Moon, where his distinctive Southern drawl became familiar to audiences around the world. As CAPCOM, he became the voice of a Mission Control nervous by a long landing that almost expended all of the Lunar Module Eagle's fuel. Dukes first words to the Apollo 11 crew on the surface of the Moon were flustered, "Roger, Twank... Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot!"
Charlie was also part of the backup crew for Apollo 13 before finally getting his own mission on Apollo 16.

I know. I loved how during the launch, he would sneak a quick peek out the window at the view of earth curving away and then reflexively go right back to checking the instrument panel and dsky... Got all the respect in the world for him and all the other Apollo/Gemini/Mercury astronauts

There are patents made for machine intelligence driven games in the future. Can you imagine, this in VR with an AI interacting and adjusting the situation in real time depending on what you are doing. The thought is just unreal.

@tobivandebulk Well I mean in what he was saying the technology is definitely to the point where it can do that. I don't mean that sentient AI exists but that there is already many examples of deep learning ai as well as just procedural ai would do it. If there is enough time, money, and people working on it, it could definitely be possible in our technological climate.

+Tony Martin I have the same thoughts. When he was in the Saturn V , he seems to be focused on the controls. I can imagine how often he (and the other apollo-astronauts) has to be excercised (also in the simulator back in the 60's, 70's) what he has to keep on looking - to react in a part of a second if something goes wrong. Truly a professional . We only have a glimpse of it, what they achieved back then.

I wouldn't be shocked if he was having a flashback. This was the most glorious moment of his life. The great deed that put his name on the books. To relive it would be to revisit his greatest accomplishment. I'm sure he enjoyed it in a way that only a man who lived it then was able to relive it could.

Must have been a nice little buzz for him.

Surely you understand that the reason we went to the moon is because it was a space race against an enemy we were at war with. If you listen to the entire speech given by JFK, it was practically a battle cry. Without war, there would be no moon landing. I'm willing to bet the government would only ever go to Mars or other planets if they knew how to generate an enormous profit and the means to a regular supply of it to boot. Then you might actually see the same financial investment for space travel as the 60s, because everyone will want a piece of that pie and you'll have another space race, but this time to claim land.

As a space lover, and someone who has spent hundreds of hours of my life reading and researching those early years in manned space flight. I find this rather awesome. Charlie duke is a stand up guy. Speaking to those technical inaccuracies Mr. Duke mentioned. The big one i noticed right away that was missing. You would not be able to see out the windows sitting on the pad, or for the first few moments of launch. A boost protective cover is attached to the tower and completely covers the command module. This cover protects the command module from the rocket exhaust and also from the heating generated by launch vehicle boost through the atmosphere. It remains attached to the tower and is carried away when the launch escape assembly is jettisoned. On the Saturn V, this happened at around 295,000 feet or about 30 seconds after ignition of the second stage.

+Tim White you are so right with this and it was also painful to see the astronauts not in upside down attitude during the ascent. Because they actually launched over their heads in order to receive positive g-forces instead of negative, why this is still done by everybody until now. The scale of the earth was also far away from beeing realistic while orbiting at 180 km. The view suggested rather thousands of kilometers altitude. (even from the ISS you can barely see the whole planet)

Also, once we get to the surface of the moon, the MESA isn't lowered to the left of the Virtual-Neil-Armstrong, which means the TV camera would still be locked up and nobody back on earth would have seen the real Armstrong coming down the ladder. I was hoping they'd show this so we could see exactly how the camera was set up, In all the Apollo books I've read I've never seen a good diagram of this. I guess it would take too much detail rendering to show the whole MESA with all its equipment. My guess is that they purposely left the boost protective cover off for artistic effect. I do believe even with the boost protective cover off that one window was uncovered and that one of the astronauts could see out while the other two couldn't,.

Oh man, this is wonderful. Simulations of the Apollo missions and the like would be top of my list the moment I get VR goggles. Great to see Charlie Duke enjoying himself and feeling that it did it justice too. And I agree that seeing him give the thumbs up, doing checks and stuff like that, those moments are pure gold.

I bought the PS4 VR just for this game. It did not disappoint. I have played it over and over. This is the closest I'll ever get to go to my dream of being an Apollo astronaut as a kid. I think I smiled the whole time and just kept saying wow. Charlie Duke gave this a nice thumbs up. Good enough for me.When he said the moons surface looked pretty accurate I was really impressed. How cool is that???

Quite an amazing feat of planning, engineering, production, perseverance, courage, and accomplishment from NASA when you think about the fact that there was probably more computing power in the first 10 seconds of this demo than there was in the entire Apollo program's command modules.

When you look at the sky you see how beautiful it is. When you look at history how long we’ve been around, you see how beautiful it is. But in that moment you see our home. The place where every human. Creature. Invention. Civilisation. Every death every child. Every dreamer. When you see our home as just a blue ball suspended in absolute nothingness. Everything we’ve ever known. You realise how beautiful it is. It’s only taken 100 years out of the million we’ve been here to obtain the knowledge to achieve everything. Cars. Virtual reality. Space travel. When you look at everything in depth and how far we’ve come is when you discover the true beauty in everything we see. There’s no other feeling that compares to seeing what we’ve become and what we’ve done. Only then is when you experience beauty.
