Old and unwanted extension leads are one of my favorite things, exactly for this purpose...
I collect recycled wires from construction sites and recycling centers, focusing especially on leftover old cables. I then use these cables to build a wire antenna and use twogether with balun(s). These antennas have been successful in my projects." , thank you very much for your video, - G7UNF
Thanks for sharing. Its amazing how a good antenna can be made on the cheap. I think a lot of us over think the hobby.
thumbs up, been looking for antena wire and i had it all the time. just retired and probably have 3 to 4 thousand feet of old extension cords.
Wooohoooo! Fantastic mate. Smash those main plugs up, and you've got the perfect wire for any length antenna. Happy building mate. Cheers!
Thanks for the great idea for field expedient antennas for this rocking sunspot cycle. Think I’m going to give it a try before too long!
Hey buddy, it works GREAT! Easy and quick to deploy and extension cords are cheap! Cheers mate
That's awesome! I need to build one of these.
Hey buddy! It’s an awesome build with great wire and uses up “useless” cords lying around the house haha… so many antenna options 👍🍻👍
great job simon I think I'll make one ..
Great job Simon. Sledges are great to smash them plugs up!
hahaha! Hayden buddy - I left my sledge hammer back in Euroa - I had to use a lame lightweight axe head haha. Can't wait to do another stream with ya some time soon buddy. Cheers and beers mate
Nice! I hope to catch you at Cattle Point one day!
Hey buddy, that would be awesome! I will be down there in an hour livestreaming. I'm usually there every Wednesday. Hope to see you down there one day. Cheers!
Cool project Simon. These chocs are called Gintooyun in the UK. 😊
I am in the process of building my antenna and I have some questions about when you deployed it. It looks like the feed point is about 6 feet or so off of the ground. Is this correct? How did you connect the radials to the ground? Are they roughly at a 45 degree angle? Thanks
Hey Richie, thanks for your comment buddy. The feedpoint is roughly 6 feet off the ground, and the radials are connected to string, and then tied to battens in the ground. So they are elevated radials, and need to be at least 2 feet above the ground at the ends where the string is connected... the radial angle is about 120-135 degrees from the feedpoint downwards. Are you familiar with Greg's (KJ6ER) "PERformer" aka "PREDator" antenna set up? This is essentially that, but the radiating element is wire from the extension cord instead of a stainless whip. Happy building mate! She's a great antenna. Wooohooo. Cheers
6:44 Oops I'll fix that off camera😀
Now I've got to look around the house for an extension cord. The XYL won't mind if I cut the cord off of her blender, right? It is for the betterment of ham radio science after all. KC1RVK
Hahha good luck with that mate, 'all for the betterment of ham radio'. "Sorry honey, something happened to the 10 ft perfect for a 10 meter antenna power cord'. hahaha.
What could go wrong?
You use the N style of connectors, yes?
Wow, fantastic idea there sir, I'm gonna try one too myself. May I ask. How long is your coax and I noticed, no BALUN? All the best, DW1QEW.
Hello Francisco, thanks for watching the video and your comment mate. The coax length I use is 25 feet, but I have also used this antenna on 15 feet, and as for a balun... are you referring to a choke or something like a 9:1? I do use a choke for RFI, but not a balun as the antenna is resonant. Happy building my friend! It's a great fun antenna and works great. Cheers
This was awesome, great project for 10M. Is the idea to be able to change out the radiating element quickly for other bands? That would be quite the portable kit
Absolutely mate! Just unwind the ends of each leg, and boom, you've got 12,15,17 and if long enough, you've also got 20! Happy building my friend. Keep me posted on how you go. Cheers
Don't think the axe 🪓 is big enough Simon. Great 👍🏽 🙌🏽 woohoo
Yeah smash it up. Just beat the S... out of it. Wohooo 💯👌
Thanks Simon , great video , de KN4SWS John
Thanks John buddy - more to come!
SWL contest 2023 start soon
Out of interest, how long was the cord? Looks like a half wave as presumably were the two radials.
Good morning Roger, the extension cord is 3 meters, or 10 feet.... I salvaged the full length of the cord and folded a few inches back on itself. So the vertical radiating element is 9' 8" and the two radials are 77 inches. Depending on the height and environment, you might need to adjust this to accommodate. Thanks very much for your comments mate and have a great day. Cheers
Thank you. I'll give it a try.
@@rogertuffin6881 Good luck Roger. I'm working on another couple of different configuration antennas from old extension cords lying around. More soon buddy - happy building!
Awesome KQ4QAV
Still not saying the "l" in soldering. Yanks ya know.
Pretty slick setup my friend. On the air for just pennies!!! amazing. kd9van
Very cool. N8YTX
Thanks buddy. Lots more of this kind of video coming soon! Woohooo
