A month ago I've decided to try recording an audiobook. A month ago all I knew was I need 'a condenser mic'. Then I have found your channel somehow. Now I have a USB condenser mic, an XLR condenser mic, two XLR dynamic mics, a boom arm, a shock mount, a mic stand, a pop filter, and Steinberg UR22mkII. And not a single word of that audiobook recorded. Curse you.
First, Booth Junkie is my second favorite channel behind this one, so that was a cool shoutout to Mike. Second, that transition from electric to acoustic was seamless...usually it's just a straight cut from one to the other
Looking for a new microphone to do my audiobooks and voice work. I've used an ADK6 for years. But. I'm looking for something like this. Never liked the CAD's given to me. Always seemed low end and well...cheap. Have one plus about 10 other named brands and model mics. But never found that "one" and too poor for the "classic" Neumann models like u87 or tlm103. Good review! Thanks!
I actually purchased a vintage e100 from Mike (Booth Junkie) As a VO mic it’s amazing! Mic position has a lot to do with plosives on a super cardioid mic.
I have been using this for years and while I really like it, the plosives with it are horrible and I am glad to hear it is not just me. It doesn't seem to matter which pop filter I use or the placement of the pop filter, it's juts poppin' P's all day long!
This mic definitely suits better for Mike, who have some distortion in low-end of his voice. and CAD shows it great. For some with smooth, and bit higher pitched voice like Bandrew (and myself) have it's not best mic.
WARNING BEFORE YOU BUY: I have just tested TWO CAD e100s microphones, back to back. The recording was using a MixPre3-II with a sample rate of 48kHz and bit depth of 32-bit Float. My first copy of the e100s had a noise floor on par with an AKG P420 (in other words, nowhere near the published specs for the e100s), the second copy I received is even worse (higher SNR than the first copy by about 2-3dB in my estimation, noticeably noisier than the first when listening to it in with Sony MDR-7506 headphones) in self-noise performance as I just finished testing side by side and scrutinized the recording wearing headphones and via spectrographic analysis and waveform statistics in Izotope RX8. I really wanted to own a good sample of this microphone, but I don't think this is going to happen so I am returning both mics. By the way, I am assuming both microphones came from the same batch since their serial numbers differ by 2 (one is SN6025, the second one is SN6027). My Deity Smic2 blows them both away with respect to self-noise (EIN). These were purchased through Amazon and sold by Photo4Less. The box is NOT WOOD, but plastic, imitating wood. I am aware of Booth Junkie's reviews/experience with similar problems with the e100s. I am aware of all the discussions of Gearslutz as well.
I’ve been eyeing this microphone for so long. Thanks for doing the review. For the money, I still think the LCT 440 PURE is an excellent microphone. It’s look resembles this one as well.
The plosives didnt come through the video so badly. And MAN that sounded good on your voice especially while singing, my jaw dropped when you sang into it
The sound remind me a lot the NT1, is an awasome puppy, a super microphone in my opinion, but the company support is quite different, I have found that CAD don't provide overseas warranty support like Rode's, it's a beutiful microphone that when it fails burns your USD $ 500, I prefer keeping buying Rode mics as they have a sturdy warranty covering their mic overseas. What do you think about the support of CAD microphones, to me it's important be covered with my investment.
Thanks for this! The amount of detail and testing in this vid is really appreciated; I've been looking around at mics and really considering this one. Might just save up for it.
I have the original e100 (without the S) it's got the golden grill. It's an amazing mic and my favorite condenser mic of all time for vocals. Out of all of the choices out there, I've just grown fond of the unique, buttery smooth consonant sounds it delivers and smooth vocals. The version in this video (e100S) does not sound like it has any problems either. If I ever need to upgrade because something terrible happens to my e100 original, I would definitely pick this up. As far as plosives, I never have a problem with my metal pop screen, but I can't speak on the S model because I only have an original. From the sounds of it though...this version does not sound noticeably different at all. Buttery smooth.
Sounds fantastic. One of the more popular voice-over microphones - thanks in large part to an influential blog post by voice actor Paul Strikwerda (nethervoice.com).
@@Podcastage Hi Bandrew. You're welcome. Here's the link: www.nethervoice.com/cad-e100s-review/ By my reckoning this is could be the first mic with a high-end boost that you actually like :) Great nod to Mike Delgaudio/Booth Junkie. But you forgot to end with: "Now go get yourself a microphone and record something amazing!" 😂
Whenever I hear of this mic, Mr Booth Junkie himself (Mike) is the first and only person who immediately comes to mind. Excellent review; seamless guitar transitions. Be well.
good mic. I think at the point where the boost starts it is a little too jarring and abrupt. It's like all flat and then BOOM the boost starts to rise at about 4-4.5khz. Overall it's a good mic though. It has a nice speech boost that goes under the 5db line and (ok at 7khz that's when the human voice ends and then the rest is the treble pretty much) has a little boost in the treble that doesn't make this mic breathy I think which is a good thing. Overall a good mic just with that jarring point where the boost starts and I think the price should be maybe $300-$400 (somewhere in that range) given all that is has going for it.
You should do a verses on the Blue snowball or snowball ice the Blue yeti or yeti pro and the Blue ember i love to see how big of a difference of the sound quality there is and the difference with a usb/yeti and a XLR/ember there is also thank you if you do this
Thankyou for the thorough review! I have a ton of splosive problems so I'll need to work on that, maybe get a metal pop filter and look away haaha! Im glad to hear some more of the down sides of this thing because from a voiceover perspective it has been sounding too good to be true, and I wanted to see someone say what was wrong with it!
There is something to be said for a $500 dollar microphone that doesn't reject plosives very well, but also someone probably isn't buying a $500 dollar microphone and not using a pop filter!
Love it...I have the vintage one but am thinking of getting this one to future proof my vintage in case something ever happens to it...I don’t want downtime with this beauty. They sound ever so slightly different...the vintage is so buttery smooth and warm...this one is just as smooth but seems to have less boomyness and a little brighter...both things can be adjusted during mixing, not a big deal, they are so similar in a lot of ways!
Hey -Bandrew- Mike, I just noticed you used a nylon pop filter, unless I'm mistaken I thought you were a Stedman fan? Have you changed preference? What pop filter are you using mostly now, and why? Thanks
i know this has nothing to do with the mic in the video but i want to upgrade my audio setup and was wondering if i should get the um2 interface with a xlr mic or the auna mic 900b
Another great video, but you got the headphones wrong in the intro. One ear only -- duh! Also, thanks for mentioning the membership. I just joined because I enjoy your mic reviews and podcast.
The m179 does sound surprisingly good for the price point. It's not surprising considering the capsules are straight from the vintage E300 and the microphone itself is metal.
I just don't think this thing sounds good. You mentioned best in class Self Noise, but aren't their complaints these units have a hum and are noisy when the pre-amp is cranked up?
Charles Michael the point still holds true though. Ben’s voice is not what we’d call a “classic broadcast voice” yet he was able to garner a fan base of millions. If he loses that, it’s not because his voice, it’s because he does or says something that his audience disagrees with.
I looked at a pricing tracker and it looks like it fluctuates from $330 - $430 - $500 over time. I'm guessing that this is due to Mass Drop units making it out to the wild.
HAHA! Great vid! I just haven't ever been able to get over one thing. I don't want to spend 500 bucks on a cheap looking electric shaver that also works as a microphone. Yeah, I'm a moron.
