Great point: flexibility and speed are much more useful that 'strength' in athletic events including running! Martial Arts have proven this many times. This was Bruce Lee's thesis with performance.

As a basketball player, I will shoot and do some drills with my barefoot Prio shoes, but when I play a basketball game I wear my basketball shoes.

That's cool, since research shows that merely walking in minimalist shoes like Xero Shoes can build foot strength, which should help when you're in your b-ball shoes :-)

I ran for the first time in years, I didn't have a pair of shoes I still don't I wear sandals all the time, I tried jogging and sandals and it hurt too bad so I just took them off and then it running 2 miles barefoot 1 minute walk 1 minute run, I have a huge blister on my left heel, but as I started feel pain in my heel I noticed my run was different it changed somehow I started feeling pressure in my foot bones near the toes behind them. I had broken my foot twice couple years ago right behind the pinky toe on the pad of your foot, is that where I'm supposed to be landing first, I noticed slight pain where I broken my foot before but not to the point where I had to stop. Anyways I ran barefoot literally because I have nothing to run with I just ordered a pair of New Balance, I'm thinking I'll just use them for the gym. I'm heading out today for another run I will try to focus on running lightly and quietly with quicker strides, but it's funny how my stride changed as my heel started hurting cuz I think I'm a natural heel Striker and then as my heel started hurting my stride changed. Sorry for the run-on sentence using voice to text, great series I'm watching all of them!

The other morning I ran with only socks on a hotel treadmill for an hour. I feel great. No pain, feel great. I just went for a walk on concrete sidewalk for 15 minutes. Now I have blisters on heal and ball of feet. Feel like if I was running, I wouldnt have gotten blisters. What do you think?

Xero Shoes I read the article. I got the blisters from walking. So , you are saying I need to learn how to walk barefoot also? Shorter steps and lighter on my feet while walking. P.S. can’t wait to receive my Xero shoes in the mail!!

When I first starting going barefoot, I got a blister from walking... it was the same cause: friction (coming from excessive horizontal force). As I paid attention to how I was using my feet, my gait naturally changed and I stopped overstriding and "pulling" and "scraping' my feet... no more blisters. That was 13 years ago.

I am going to run X-country for my high school and as far as I know, we can't run barefoot, so would it be healthy to practice barefoot then compete in X-country spikes?

+Vance Miller The more barefoot training you can do, the better. In fact, I'm surprised to hear that your coach doesn't already prescribe some barefoot training.
I'm a sprinter -- I do a lot of training barefoot, but then put on spikes when I'm at anything faster than 85% of full speed.

You said, you started to heel-strike while walking(!) around with Nike Free on your feet. Isnt it the natural way of walking ?
It feels weird and wrong walking around trying to forefoot-strike..

"Strike" isn't the best word. When I walk normally, my heel often (but not always) touches first, but I'm not weighting my foot until mid-foot. So I sort of roll over my heel. In the Free, because of the highly elevated heel, I was STRIKING the ground. That make sense?

      Indeed! Thanks for the answer.

Look up Todd Martin MD on RUclips. He explains the evidence that it is more efficient to ROLL from heel to toe whilst walking and how our ancestors walked like this. Makes perfect sense, because if you land forefoot first then your foot and ankle are going backwards when you are trying to walk forwards (how awkward!). Also, try walking backwards. You will see that you go from forefoot to heel.

I'm imagining a guy in a hazmat suit sent to deal with a spillage of toxic chemicals... and going barefoot to prove that barefoot is always the best option ;)
Or a barefoot astronaut on EVA...

    What about standing long periods?

    • @stevensashen6956
      @stevensashen6956 7 лет назад +1

Not an problem. Aside from all our employees who've done trade shows where we stand for 10-12 hours on concrete floors, we've heard from TONS of customers who have "standing jobs" (doctors, waitresses, nurses, etc.).
When your feet aren't able to move, because of "normal" footwear, their job -- the subtle movements that balance you and let you stand properly -- *try* to move up into your ankle, knee, hip, and back... which aren't made for that function. Let your feet move naturally, and you can take the stress of those upstream joints.
