    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The crew rushes back to the trail after they find a series of strange rock formations outside their tent, but Heather (Heather Donahue) discovers that the map is missing.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Combining Hi-8 video with black-and-white 16 mm film, this film presents a raw look at what can happen when college students forego common sense and enter the world of voodoo and witchcraft. Presented as a straightforward documentary, the film opens with a title card explaining that in 1994, three students went into the Maryland back woods to do a film project on the Blair Witch incidents. These kids were never seen again, and the film you are about to see is from their recovered equipment, found in the woods a year later. The entire movie documents their adventures leading up to their final minutes. The Blair Witch incident, as we initially learn from the local town elders, is an old legend about a group of witches who tortured and killed several children many years ago. Everyone in town knows the story and they're all sketchy on the details. Out in the woods and away from their parked car (and civilization), what starts as a school exercise turns into a nightmare when the three kids lose their map. Forced to spend extra days finding their way out, the kids then start to hear horrific sounds outside their tents in the pitch-black middle of night. They also find strange artifacts from (what can only be) the Blair Witch, still living in the woods. Frightened, they desperately try to find their way out of the woods, with no luck. Slowly these students start to unravel, knowing they have no way of getting out, no food, and it's getting cold. Each night they are confronted with shrieking and sounds so haunting that they are convinced someone is following them, and they quickly begin to fear for their lives. The film premiered in the midnight movie section at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

That’s because the film crew distanced themselves from the actors, had the actors actually sleep in the woods, and kept them on edge by playing scary sounds at night from a distance. The only acting instructions they received were written down on notes left for them by the crew while they were sleeping. They took every step to make this look as genuine as possible.

I was genuinely unnerved by this because it was so clever showing this. It leaves the viewer wondering: are they genuinely fighting because they're upset about Mike losing the map? Or did the witch possess or trick him into doing it and he doesn't remember? Therefore, is the witch attempting to manipulate them through stress and anger?

A lot of people complain that the movie is them "complaining about a map", but that lack of traditional narrative and structure is a big part of what makes BWP so damn effective. The conversations seem so organic and real because they were! Fact Fiend did a great video on how this movie was made. For the woods portions of the movie, there was no script. Each day they were given notes on which way to head into the woods and what to talk about, but no lines. They were purposely not given enough food to keep them on edge with each other.

People get mad at Mike for throwing the map away but it doesn't even matter. The three of them are doomed from the moment they enter the woods. The Blair Witch has them going around in circles. I don't think Mike was being malicious when he kicked the map into the creek. He did it as a result of being deprived of food & sleep for so long. Also, he didn't fully trust Heather at that point. She was putting her excitement about the project before their own safety.

The map, even though it obviously wasn't helping them out, was at least something to hang onto while everything else is going wrong. Something to look at and at least show there's a way out. When that is lost, everything completely crumbles. Mike was correct in saying the map was useless, the witch was in control of the woods. If you look around the Burkittsville Maryland area, you will see that the woods are along the ridge just to the west. The woods are only about 3,000 feet wide, that is less than one mile thick. Plenty of open farmland and country roads on either side of the woods. Difficult to get lost.

The scary thing is precisely not seeing anything on the screen. But we do hear voices, and footsteps and nobody knows who or what it is... Haven't you ever been on a camp trip with friends? Or in a park at night? Or even in a cemetery? Sometimes you hear things, you don't know what they are, and your fears start to take shape... The Blair Witch Project's success is due to that, the stress of being lost in an unsafe place which is really nerve-racking and the fear of dying not even knowing how...

Right after this scene, Josh lies down and then gets up. Looking almost like he wanted to attack Heather, and the looks dazed for a second. Not sure if they brought alcohol on the trip, but that was a strange moment in the movie for sure.

To me, she has that "girl next door" type beauty. I'd love to take her out for a date. The directors tried to make the actors look dirty and run down. They weren't allowed access to any cleaning facilities during the entire shoot. Whenever they got hungry, the directors had small stashes of food hidden in trees so they wouldn't show up on the film accidentally. Myrick and Sanchez (the directors) were very clever. This is still one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.

One night this aired on Syfy at like 2am as I was looking for something to watch on a Saturday night. Luckily I caught it just as it started.
I went sleep that night with my mind buzzing. I could not stop thinking about this movie. Such a simple idea executed perfectly.

My favorite horror movie because it's one of the only ones that's managed to get under my skin actually freak me out, no monsters or fantastical plotlines or traditional character tropes or jumpscares, just three people lost in the woods and losing their sanity while you're left to imagine what could be stalking them. I know a lot of people don't like this film because it lacks answers to it's own questions, but that's exactly WHY I love it so much. The unknown has always intrigued and frightened me so much more than any demon (amazingly designed or not) that has ever been conjured up or explained away onscreen. This movie would not have left the impact it did had they shown a gangly witch dragging them into hell or a group of Satan worshipping hillbillies chopping them up. People are talking and even debating about it 20 years later precisely because it wasn't just another horror movie, it was an open ended immersive experiment that pissed some ppl off, bored others to tears and absolutely absorbed, terrified and inspired others. I legit never get tired of this movie.

According to the supplemental "Curse of the Blair Witch" Mockumentary that came out just before the film released, that's not actually the case. Rather, a group of archaeology students were digging at the foundation of what used to be a colonial house, which was no longer standing, and found a bag full of their equipment and footage underneath some sterile soil that, according to all scientific logic, was undisturbed and thus, they couldn't explain how the bag got there because it would have basically had to materialize there since no person could have buried it. It's a little spooky piece of information that adds to the supernatural element of the movie once you're aware of it.

I think they made it pretty clear they were not getting out of there once they went in, no matter what they did. This is illustrated by the way they walked in the same direction for an entire day and somehow ended up back where they started.
