The most scariest part about a haunted forest is imagining what they're like when they're empty with no people walking around. The thing that makes this scene, and the whole movie in general, genuinely disturbing and frightening is the complete and utter silence, used to it's greatest effect in this scene. Most found-footage type rules follow that rule, but the difference is that most of them take place in a house, or somewhere where there's a lot of ambient noise, but these woods are quiet. I love, how the simple but effective setting, the situation of being trapped and lost in a forest far away from civilization, being out of control, dealing with a threat you can't see and the modest staging perfectly apply to the viewer, by transporting the fear, we all would have in that situation and animating the fantasy to create a disturbing version of what we can see... That's how a lot of classic Horrorfilms built up tension: Don't show, animate the viewer's fantasy, less is more...
To me, the mythology of the Blair Witch more interesting than the movie itself. But I do truly love the original movie. This scene with the stick figures and the scene where she finds the severed tongue in the bundle of sticks really stand out to me as being particularly uncomfortable. And when Mike is crying at the end of the movie while looking for Josh is very distressing to me. But I really love the documentary movies related to this movie. Well worth checking out. One in particular where they investigate the boy that escaped being killed by Rustin Parr but witnessed the other seven kids being killed is very unnerving to watch.
This movie was very scary back then because found footage films were very rare or unknown. Also there was a big marketing campaign that made people believe this was a true story and that the images where real.
The piles of rocks and creepy sounds at night were one thing. But finding effigies made from sticks and string miles away from any kind of civilization is proof that whatever is tormenting them is intelligent.
You have to imagine the purpose and dedication behind the entity creating these stick figures, as the bigger ones seem rather elaborate, needing some time to make and erect. It is this malevolent motivation underpinning the crude yet almost detailed work ( there are several different designs it appears ) of the figures hanging in the trees that can play with your mind..not in the good way. Almost that this force has a power, wisdom and visceral threat that we ( in the actors shoes ) will never be able to understand, possess, or worse.conquer.!!!Also the woods themselves here add considerably to the menace. They seem at the same time, both open at ground level, but densely enclosed further up the tree canopy. This subtle arrangement in the mostly deciduous forest really aids the eerie nature of the location, much more than it would have done in late spring with soft and lush new growth. Particularly enjoyed the scenes with the sun gradually dropping away through the canopy each day, you just know that trouble is brewing when it completely fades..only matter of time.. hehehe)). Ode to a crafty witch!!
You know there's a such thing as overanalyzing right? I wouldn't read into it to much, they were on a tiny budget when filming this movie and making figures out of sticks is as cheap as it gets
Django Leo people love this movie and there was an actual lore created around it. A lot of the fun and scary aspects of the film is wondering about the things that are not explained and never will be, much like real life. I understand the point you’re making but it’s putting yourself in the shoes of a situation like this which really makes a lot of people’s minds run wild with creativity.
If you listen closely you can hear other people yelling and arguing, could be the witch or other victims going through the same situation as Heather, Josh and Mike
Imagine being the people that found the footage, or investigators and the parents if this was real. It's so eerie and unusual that they would have to keep quiet to not cause panic in the public.
Think about it. What took them days to get this far in the woods with something hunting along the way. Someone/something else hiked this far and spent days making these things in the middle of the woods... For what reason? Thats the scary part for me. These woods seem to mostly untouched by humans. So someone hiked just as far just to make these figures. Did they too get lost and captured by the witch? Was it the witch her self that made these?
Haha the woods where I grew up someone would hang up little stick sculptures, they looked a lot like these woods too. Lucky i was way too young to watch Blair Witch when it came out lmao I loved chilling in those woods, probably not so much if I'd seen this
Just a little fact about this movie, the 3 didn't know what they were walking into each day when they were filming stuff like this. They'd be given a GPS location each day to walk to, so this is one of the moments when they didn't know what they were gonna find. This will always be in my top 10 favorite horror movies.
No one was into the project more than Heather. The guys were getting pissed @ her because all she cared about was documenting everything and wasn’t taking their situation seriously
I like how the guy says 'don't light a fire so they can't find us' it's like you've been screaming this entire time! They know where you are! But that just makes it more scarey! O:
Mean critics made fun of Heather Donahue and her nose scene, but as I make a scary movie. It's hard to force someone to cry while shooting a film. Some can, some can't. It is acting talent. ! Looking past usual and boring critics. A real critic goes much deeper with respect and consideration.
I honestly agree. For me the top 5 creepiest scenes are. 1. Seeing stick figures in the trees 2. Hearing Josh calling for help that isn’t him 3. Seeing the blood from Josh (not sure what piece of human party part it is from him) 4. Seeing Heather in front of the camera at night giving a speech and then hearing something) 5. Heather is running and screaming in the haunted ruined house and heads to the basement and we see Mike facing the corner to not look at the Blair Witch. She sees Mike and then dies automatic once’s the Blair Witch is seen. If you think about. It’s so much eerie that way now that I think of it. I liked how real it felt and how respectable the movie was to not let us see The Blair Witch. Because once you see what Heather see. You die instantly. I can totally understand why people were so scared to see it killing them off one after another. Being stalked like prey. The Blair Witch was literally on top of the good chained and made the humans rock bottom compared to the Witch. A movie that made people not want to go into a forest. Specially if it’s cursed and has a history of being haunted by a Witch that controls the woods of not letting people leave. Once you’ve entered the woods there is no going back to reality so called home and safety.
I don't know if it was supposed to be the same thing as this (i think it's different), but the Bones episode where someone from a "witch that murders people in the woods" film group was killed was pretty freaky and scary.
This movie is the definition of less is more. It's great. You never really see anything and that's why it's so great

I think once they saw those stick figures, they were screwed.
Yup
This movie was very scary back then because found footage films were very rare or unknown. Also there was a big marketing campaign that made people believe this was a true story and that the images where real.
There are people now who would probably believe this was real
this gives a whole new meaning to stick figures
I cant imagine a scarier scenario. The woods was its own presence.
Fun fact: during the entire time of production, they were a stone's throw from civilization or a road.
The directors goal was not to use horror. The goal was the use terror to make you afraid if what’s not there
And they did a good job
What makes a movie scary is the atmosphere that sends chills down your spine. I'm a glutton of getting myself scared.
Matthew Buckley What are the films that made you feel that way?
@@fifthbeatle I can’t really say but I enjoy getting scared though
I always feel fear and claustrohobia when Mike starts screaming for help. We know that no one will hear or help them at this point.
Heather: “Okay, we’re out of here, we’re out of here I’m leaving”
Witch: Lol
Wait what if the branches snapping in the middle of the night was the witch breaking sticks to make these
It was.
If you learn something from hiking in the woods, always remember to mark a trail.
Good advice
That's no use if your being stalked and hunted
I saw one of those stick figures at Planet Hollywood in Disney Springs many years ago.
Thats awesome!
Maybe that's what cursed that made them shut down
+samdiego no it's still open
lol its just under renovation rn I was there a few weeks ago
They definitely don’t make them like this anymore.
Can remember the goosebumps I had seeing this film and the impact it left.
A classic creepy film made like a documentary which made it more realistic & scary.
This was the first of it's kind...
The large, thick figures and the silence is so creepy
“No red neck is this creative” lol good movie ❤️
That's my favorite line in the hole movie!!!
"Stop taping! Please stop taping!"
So how are we tiering this in terms of Most Genius Horror Movie Quotes of All Time?
Maybe the witch is into very creepy macabre arts in crafts 🤷♂️
Ever since I saw this movie I've been wanting to go out into the woods with some friends and shoot a half improvised horror movie.
Not scared youll end up like them😕😂
Imagine being out there at night with no fire and no light...
This movie is the reason I don't ever go into the woods for any reason at all.
The piles of rocks and creepy sounds at night were one thing. But finding effigies made from sticks and string miles away from any kind of civilization is proof that whatever is tormenting them is intelligent.
was watching this in my dad's office when the lamp fell from ceiling. freaked the hell out of me
You have to imagine the purpose and dedication behind the entity creating these stick figures, as the bigger ones seem rather elaborate, needing some time to make and erect.
Why did she make them
You know there's a such thing as overanalyzing right?
I love that shot of the first stick figure, so iconic
Think about it. What took them days to get this far in the woods with something hunting along the way. Someone/something else hiked this far and spent days making these things in the middle of the woods... For what reason? Thats the scary part for me. These woods seem to mostly untouched by humans. So someone hiked just as far just to make these figures. Did they too get lost and captured by the witch? Was it the witch her self that made these?
The witch made them yes, I think they represent all of the people and children that have been captured/killed over the years.
You see stuff like that randomly in the woods. That's when you get the hell outta there!😳
They can't get out their under the witches spell
I would be noping out fuck that.
they nope the fuck out a lot in this movie, they just got nowhere to go.
12 year old me thought this s-t was real.
You and me both. Lol
It isn’t scary but it’s really creepy nothing jumps out at you that makes it scary
I remember when this movie came out I was 5. Dear god I would have so many nightmares
I was 13 years old when this came out, and watched it at the northfield drive-in / Northfield Massachusetts
18 years old at the Walden Galleria movie theater in Buffalo!
Am I the only one that wants to puke during this scene? It's not gory or anything but... idk why it just makes me physically sick.
Youre able to put yourself in their place, no jump scares, no scary music, no terrible acting.
i always think of Marble Hornets whenever i watch this movie
They owe a lot to Blair Witch, I think
arts and crafts
Haha the woods where I grew up someone would hang up little stick sculptures, they looked a lot like these woods too. Lucky i was way too young to watch Blair Witch when it came out lmao I loved chilling in those woods, probably not so much if I'd seen this
Sometimes I wish things like this happened to me, because it would be scary but at the same time it's like, hmm no way
This happened to me except I was the one making the sick figures
Just a little fact about this movie, the 3 didn't know what they were walking into each day when they were filming stuff like this. They'd be given a GPS location each day to walk to, so this is one of the moments when they didn't know what they were gonna find. This will always be in my top 10 favorite horror movies.

It’s true. Read “8 Days in the Woods.”
Getting a really tired of these "Fun Facts" comments.

Fun fact- no one cares
No one was into the project more than Heather. The guys were getting pissed @ her because all she cared about was documenting everything and wasn’t taking their situation seriously
Still fucking creepy to this day...
I like how the guy says 'don't light a fire so they can't find us' it's like you've been screaming this entire time! They know where you are! But that just makes it more scarey! O:
This movie is the fine definition of fear of the unknown
" No Redneck is this creative ..." 😅😭😭😭😭💀💀💀☠☠☠
imagine you get lost in the woods and suddenly you find all those creepy hanging voodoo shit,
those creepy stick figures all mean one thing: "WARNING"
Maybe if you go to the woods and was in their situation you would be scared but since it's a movie I wonder why I was so scared of stick figures...
I love the idea that the stick figures are the souls of the children the Blair Witch killed. As if turned to stone forever. Horrifying.
It makes you question what are children doing in the woods and so very deep in for that matter!
This scene is perfect
I love this movie
Me as well.
they could lift each other up and then use arm strength to pull themselves up.
VOODOO SHIT!!!!
At 1:06 if you listen carefully you can hear a woman in the distance screaming “No! No!”
And 1:00 - 1:03 you can see something moving behind a bush in the bottom right corner of the screen
was just a bird
kinda funny when josh wants to gtfo saying they saw everybut then notices one he didnt see and freaks out
this whole movie is still scary to this day, I'm a Boy Scout, after I watched this I went camping (not the best idea) I had a hard time falling asleep
Mean critics made fun of Heather Donahue and her nose scene, but as I make a scary movie. It's hard to force someone to cry while shooting a film. Some can, some can't. It is acting talent. ! Looking past usual and boring critics. A real critic goes much deeper with respect and consideration.
The sacrifices the elders always make.before the modern conveniences.
One of the greatest movies of "The Modern Era".
Who knew a bundle of sticks could be so scary?
Created by a crew member 😉
I had couple of trees in my lawn, cut them off last week ..a little bit due to this film 😂
I agree, this to me was the creepiest scene in the movie.
When Mike just starts screaming "Help!!!" it still gives me the creeps
I honestly agree. For me the top 5 creepiest scenes are.
1. Seeing stick figures in the trees
2. Hearing Josh calling for help that isn’t him
3. Seeing the blood from Josh (not sure what piece of human party part it is from him)
4. Seeing Heather in front of the camera at night giving a speech and then hearing something)
I wonder are those sticks still hanging about in the woods?
