wow that power overlay of 3 riders at the same time synced with the video was siick! And yet these race organizers cant tell who actually won smh.. Anyways Perfect racing from Logan, Congrats!!
By the way Geoff. I'd personally like to thank you for having such a wonderful and informative channel. I went from getting dropped every 2nd race in C grade 2 years ago to being consistently in the top 5 in B grade. I constantly have your advice running thru my head during a race. It's weirdly amazing to have a tactical coach I've never met. Thanks mate Mick
It looks like an electrical loop that picks up the signal of a transponder. The wires need to be a certain distance apart to work properly. The white lines are tape that hold it to the road.
I worked as a timer on multiple cycling races. Those lines are related to the timming device used by organizers. If the chip is located at the fork the second line is the finish line because when the wheel is on that line the chip is nearly at the center of those lines and that is the place where the signal from the chip is greater to the device. On some grand tours the chip is located back on the bike and the finish line is forther on the road. Here we see the importance of using a photofinish camera on the line
What's wrong with judges and an phone with slowmotion? All of this would have awarded Logan the win. Timing systems should be for backup, not the other way around.
it's pretty amazing how well all this is executed - the whole winter training plan and now the win. I'm really impresses, especially as Logan's power numbers are in the range that is achievable for me (as opposed to pros with 420W FTP)
I think Jeff missed one point worth mentioning: Logan pushed even harder when it mattered even though his HR was already 196 BPM. That's freaking hard to do and impressive. Nice job dude; congrats on the great result!
Absolutely! When I saw him hit the final corner at that HR I was thinking "Beautiful move, but too bad he doesn't have any gas left in the tank." and then Logan proved me wrong!
This should be called, "The difference between racing and riding" If you want to see what riding looks like, look at the first race. To go from that, accelerating up on people's wheels and having to brake, just shedding watts for no damn reason, I mean seriously!!! To this? I didn't see you hit your brakes once, no silly chasing, that position and line in the last corner - beautiful... That's what a racer looks like.
Great series! Congrats on the WIN Logan. You're def a quick study. Big difference in your tactics between the two races posted. Jeff great coaching. I'm 58 and on the same path. Similar watts and time training. My first crit is in 4 weeks.
Logan I remember(and not to long ago) I'd either win or get dropped with no inbetween...none... due to having a big sprint(past 100m sprinter with now rubbish knees) but no endurance.... even short crit endurance. It takes a couple of years to build your base.... then you end up too fast for your grade, they make you move up and then you struggle all over again.... yay cycling. Good luck champ!
Excellent job Logan, riding like you have done that race lots of times. Love the channel as it is giving me inspiration to ride again. I haven't trained for properly for over 20 years. I just purchased my new bike (Giant TCR adv pro 1) at 50 and looking to ride at every opportunity. Thank you Geoff.
I finished a race once where the placements were based on timing chips. I wound up 9th in the results on the day, which I was okay with at the time. A day later when someone published photos including the finish. Based on the photo, I should have been 6th! Neither of those are brag-worthy placements, but since I was racing up a category, I really would have liked 6th on my record rather than 9th lol. I think officials need to review footage more often rather than rely on data from timing chips exclusively.
Good sign that Logan is thinking about things like following the yellow jersey. You may want to give some thought to pedaling through the corners when you're on the outside, as it tends to be off-camber and easy to dig your pedal unless you have high bb and short cranks.
I rarely comment on youtube videos but had to drop one to say this. The decision making official(s) were blind or just honestly, incompetent. At least there are no upgrade points involved here. Just race!
The "2 finish lines" look like an electrical loop that picks up the signal of a transponder. The wires need to be a certain distance apart to work properly. You can see the lines connected beneath the billboard. The white lines are tape that hold it to the road.
I wish we'd had your excellent videos 30 years ago when I was actively racing, they would have certainly shortened my learning curve. I dug up my old notebook from1991, in it I had a page where I boiled my racing knowledge down to 10 principles. These aren't my creation, they include material from Walden School of Cycling, contributions of cycling friends, and lessons learned from leaving skin on pavement. (Items in parentheses to clarify my notes for RUclips) Other than leaving out "don't chase your team mate", it seems these notes pretty much paraphrase what you are teaching today: 1) Be clipped in and rolling when the whistle blows (to start the race; race is not won in first corner, but can certainly be lost there) 2) Shred the Freds (Help make race hard first few laps to get rid of squirrely riders and those who will allow gaps to develop later in race. Necessary in an era when fields of 75-150 riders was not uncommon in a Cat IV or Cat III race) 3) Ride the Tide (take advantage of ebbs and flow in race to move up) 4) If you are not moving up, you are moving back 5) Never accelerate in undisturbed air 6) Guard your front wheel 7) If someone yells “inside” entering a turn, shut the door 8) If there is a crash, look at the road, not the downed riders-your bike will follow your eye. If hitting a downed rider is unavoidable, aim for the neck-that’s the lowest point. (Corollary principle-cover your head and neck if you crash) 9) Sprinting requires guts, not brains 10) Positioning for the sprint requires brains
One thing I only noticed the second time through this video is how tall Logan got in his sprint. He's already putting up really good power numbers from what little I know, but I think there's a few km/h more in it if he just crouched down lower over his handlebars, a bit like Cavendish (who can almost touch his bike computer with his chin it seems :D). Nitpicky, I know, and I'm sure I wouldn't even have been in this position in the first place, so don't take it negatively please :D
Dude I did this crit last year as my first crit! Came in almost last but I didn’t expect much better for my first crit! Moving to Dallas in about a week and can’t wait to try and do it again!
I'd love to be able to do this kind of race. My FTP just crested 300W but my racing skills and sprint are dire. Just need some training to put my engine to good use before I get too old (47 currently)
One last thing I noticed - as Logan was sprinting he came out away from the left-hand gutter/curb in a R-L crosswind, should he have stuck to the curb to keep anyone from coming up in the sheltered side? All around impressive performance, excellent race tactics by Logan, and a well-deserved win (even if it came with a 2nd place finish).
Congrats Logan! You won that race clearly. They should be ashamed that after reviewing that footage they gave the win to the other racer. Anyway, don't focus on that, onwards and upwards!
Right...what's it look like at the second line? I noted that they had timing chips, so the double line is for the chips but what did they consider the actual finish line, the first one, the second one, or something in between?
so I'm curious when swinging to the outside is bad (i.e. cuts people off) and when it's just good tactics. Was Logan going fast enough through the corner that it wasn't a danger for others?
@@larsbeta well there are according to usac. You guys must be talking about how you can upgrade voluntarily though? If he gets 10 points he'll be upgraded automatically to cat4. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm doing my first crit races as novice next month.
In order for blue bike to have won from that camera angle he would need to have been ahead of the line. If you move the camera to the line, it would move blue bike back in perspective and make it even more obvious that Yellow bike was ahead. Only thing i could think is they were using the second line and blue bike was going much faster and thus overtook Logan at the second line.
That finish line is the antenna for the chip timing system - have used a similar system at the races I've put on many many times. What line did the official end up using as basis for the other racer to win, or did they go off whose chip hit first?

@@MehrPower I just stood on the finish line and followed the first place rider with the camera the whole time
Looks like Logan nailed all the other corners too, when others were going wide, he took the fast line and made up bike lengths. Free speed.
That's honestly something I was surprised about going into the races. I thought I would be the one taking corners a little more slowly.
