~-~~-~~~-~~-~
I am a happy owner of a model 3 for 2 years now and everytime they shouted Tesla killer I tried the car and it wasnt. I tried this car yesterday.
I must admit this one really is. It kept all the good things from the traditional automakers and integrated the new things that Tesla have introduced to the autoindustry.
I think they have found the perfect balance between old era and new era.
If I had to buy a car today it would be the BYD seal.
Nice input
@@GadgetsBoyI am planning to buy BYD Seal. I read an article from UK saying that when the car is passing rough surface road the driver can feel quite strong vibration on the steering wheel. Is that really the case, please kindly share your experience on this matter.
Great review. No nonsense and straight to the point. I really like the look of these cars. Well done BYD. Thanks for the video.
Thank you 🙏🏾
At least the BYD has indicator stalks, that for me is a huge plus over the new Tesla.
Im based in Thailand and have just ordered the BYD Seal performance, they cheaper here than the UK, after my test drive i was sold on the car. BTW the micro card slot in the car id for when you install your dashcam, one thing i will mention is the car is already pre wired for the BYD dashcam, so just plug and play.
Ahh that makes sense. Better than tesla USB stick system
@@GadgetsBoy sure is mate.
Great review. BYD are giving the competition a run for their money. I've not driven the Seal yet, but the Atto 3 was excellent to drive. And, for once, it was an EV that actually did the mileage as advertised!
Like the interior and at least it has the indicator and wiper stalks compared to the face lifted Model 3 which has gone a bit too far in minimising putting indicators on the wheel.
Also noticed that the "Build your dreams" inscription has been removed on the rear due to European feedback. Though I think BYD would of been OK on the centre rear of the Seal. Nice detailed review 👍🏾
Thank you. Agreed, I drove the Plaid recently and the lack of stalks was jarring.
Totally agree. How is it these super smart companies can mess up so badly!!
@@googleuser793 honestly, I'm sure you've heard the term :
"If it ain't broke why fix it?" The interior of the Model 3 was clean and simple enough. No need to ditch the indicator stalks and surely it cant be a cost issue?!
@@kofib3Some people have argued it is a cost saving change but can't see it myself. The new rear screen would be costing much more than the removed stalks. This rear screen will never convince anyone to buy the car, but the missing stalks will certainly kill it for many people.
Agree 100%
I own an AWD with black interior here in Thailand and love it. I bought a BYD dashcam and fitted it where the Chinese version has it. The videos are saved on the SD card - video on my channel
ahh nice. I just checked, looks like you're fully loving the car too. How's the NFC card?
Do you know what resolution and frame rate the videos are saved at?
No idea. Let me know if you do
@@dowphotography 1920 x 1080 25fps
@@GadgetsBoy There is a video on the NFC card on my channel (the only time I used it). BYD gave us 2 real keys but only 1 card! Maybe keep it your wallet in case you loose your key.
Thanks for the video, one of the best I've seen for this new model, and the first for a right hand drive car. The indicator stalk on the right side is actually normal for cars built specifically for right hand drive markets. What you are used to in the UK are European and American branded cars which don't bother changing the indicator stalk over when the car is converted to right hand drive. BYD apparently have a production line built specifically for the Australian market, which I am guessing would also be supplying other right hand drive market, like the UK. Even the car's voice commands seem to have the hint of an Australian accent 🤔
The price of this car in Australia is insanely competitive, can wait for my test drive.
Yes! I waiting for a refresh coz my current car is fine but I'm definitely cross shopping this with the next Gen Lexus IS. One of my gripes with the byd tho... No accessories! No factory rear lip spoiler!
Lovely review! This is way better and more spacious than Model 3. Also more comfortable than the harshly spung Model 3. Is thee a cover for thst glass roof? Won't work in some of our hot climates. Reason why model 3 isn't so popular here. Now waiting for your Sea U review.
Thank you. No cover when I looked but I'm sure you can get one for it tho. Appreciate your support as always
@@GadgetsBoy nice review, I had a test drive of AWD here in Ireland, and there was a cover for the glass roof included, was in the boot/trunk, where you can fit it yourself
Looks so much better than the Tesla
For sure
Not. You forgot the word not.
You need to start using your brain. @@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726
Both look good in my opinion.
@@vasil7410 meanwhile the BYD looks bland and old.
Gorgeous camera work on those angles!
Thank you
Had ATTO3 for half a year, loved it, and I need proper interior with common functions at hand without having to look at them -> SEAL😆
Some of the moving shots you have here of the Seal are totally inspiring
Thank you
Great review, very relatable as I'm in Ireland. I've my booking in for the RWD version. I'm hoping that the HUD bits are all there and it can be programmed back in as it's something I'd love to have but don't really want to spend the extra just for that on the AWD version.
Thank you. As far as I'm aware, the RWD don't get HUD. I've gone to BYD to check for you tho
BYD said the UK one won't get HUD in the RWD version I'm afraid.
@@GadgetsBoy thanks for checking that out 😊 I'm hoping it can be retrofitted at some stage by the dealer as the dashboard trim is all there to support it.
Never mind that folks, I was told by the dealer the Design model will have the dash cutout and trim but no hud. That's not the case, the design has a dash specific for it without the cutout.
Thanks.
I am at the moment considering replacing my 2019 Model 3 LR awd.
This one is on my short list as I would prefer not to buy Tesla again.
I have 2 question though.
- How easy is it to turn off those extremely annoying lane and 'speed' assistants ?
- How flat is the charging curve - 150 kW is not that high - but 😮f it is flat it is fine.
10-80% = 38min
Average output = 95kW
From 0-60% SoC its pretty much flat at 120-140kW
From 60-80% SoC its 80-90kW
I really do not like Tesla build quality and very few options.
Don’t like Tesla too minimalistic
Thanks for explaining how to get out of Android Auto/Apple Car play by hitting the BYD app button. We have an Atto 3 which has wireless Android auto (I'm sure the Seal has wireless as well?) and had to go into the Android auto app setting on the phone and disable the app to stop it taking over the Atto 3 display every time you "started" the car. Hitting the BYD button is a simpler fix, but a better option would be to have the ability to have Android Auto not auto connect as an option in the phone menu.
I'm looking at getting a Seal here in Australia so enjoyed your review.
One small gripe with the Seal and Atto 3 is that given these cars aren't available in North America - why the North American accent on the voice assistance? I hope BYD provide the option for some voice localisation, or at least a neutral English accent.
Glad it was helpful. And thanks for watching.
Well done mate, prob best review I’ve seen so far.
Thank you
Thank you for this video. I bit the bullet and paid the booking fee for this car yesterday. This video further ensured me that I made the right choice. It’s actually an easy choice as the price of this car in my country is half that of the tesla model 3 lol. Now I can’t wait for it to arrive. Hopefully the battery lasts longer than 8 years, and hopefully the cost of replacing the battery will be much lower when the time comes.
A nice video; good level of detail and focus on what the general public wants to know about the car. Interesting point about the indicator being on the left. Not had to worry about that since the early 90's 😅
Looking forward to more reviews like this.
Thank you, I appreciate that. Haha yeh, not sure why it's on that side unless someone forgot to change that part for the UK market haha
@@GadgetsBoy I got confirmation from BYD’s Fleet Sales manager that the example you tested was a pre-production example and that production models will have the indicator on the left. Hope that helps.
@marvinsamuels1237 good to know 🤣
Kudos to the cameraman... Blending in the Cumbrian countryside with the car
Did a great job for sure
Would love to hear more about comfort level on different road condition (e.g. rough vs bumpy), road noise, service interval and part availability.
MicroSD slot is for the dashcam
Its a beautiful car after seeing it here in Australia I ordered it in the light blue, premium model, after a lot thinking and confusion I've cancelled and gone with the Model 3 Highland just the technology with Tesla I think makes it the winner for me anyhow.
Interesting. Which Tesla tech made you switch?
@GadgetsBoy mainly their ecosystem charging and trip planning plus I do like the cabin simplicity.
@matsteel2292 fair enough. Yeah the supercharge network is undefeated
Big mistake bro....
why do you say that?@@albertgan9423
Beautiful car.
Well done , yet another Tesla Killer ready for the battle . If it is OTA capable, AI FSD capable, its faster, safer, more efficient than Tesla M 3 it has a chance, but if not, well, you know where all the Tesla Killers went.
My Tesla lease ends in Feb-24. I'll be purchasing a BYD
on RHD cars, indicator stalk should be right hand operated as well....
Do you feel it? As long as you say something positive about Chinese products like BYD, even if it is true, it will make many people dislike it, especially Tesla fans.😅
Thanks for this. I have a BYD Atto 3 here in Australia. I just wished BYD had launched a small SUV like the Tesla MY rather than a sedan. There are aspects of the Seal that I like such as the suspension but having had a MY and its cavernous interior, I wouldn’t buy this. I’m a fan of the Tesla minimalist interior too.
There’s rumours of a sea lion coming out to compete
I have the Model 3 and looking a second EV and I'm glad they have released the Seal. Personally, I am tried of the compact to mid sized SUV format, they all look so bland and generic. Even the Model Y looks like a Model 3 that's been stretched badly out of shape.
Size-wise, Tesla MY is similar to Atto3, isn't it ?
The problem I have is the price compared to Australia .... which is 30 percent cheaper
Given the title of the video, it would have been nice to get some specific points of comparison vs the Tesla.
I had a quick look on EV database for the specs and had a look at the features etc and whilst the BYD seems like a "really good" car (to borrow a phrase!) the new Tesla does seem to have the edge.
The Tesla:
- costs nearly £6k less
- has very similar range 344 miles WLTP vs 354 miles for BYD and similar acceleration 6.1 sec 0-60 vs 5.9 for BYD, Tesla slightly higher top speed at 125mph vs 112mph for BYD
- is much more efficient (acheives range with 60kWh pack vs 84kWh for BYD)
- charges much faster (27 mins 10-80% vs 38 mins for BYD)
- has more rear storage 594L vs 400L for BYD and a bigger frunk
- has heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, vs just heated front seats in BYD
- has rear passenger screen for climate controls and entertainment
- has access to all Tesla superchargers
- has better safety scores in all the NCAP tests
- better software (somewhat subjective but most people agree on this)
The BYD has strong points too, dont get me wrong - indicator stalks might be on the wrong side, but at least it has them and although the new Tesla looks much better than before, some will prefer this. Also the parking sensors and rain sensors actually work properly on the BYD! Plus I suspect that BYD will get more real world range, although with the slower charging the Tesla is still probably a better road tripper so maybe this nets out.
But for £6k more than the Tesla, given all the ways the Tesla is better, I'm just not sure i could justify getting one. Will need to test drive them both back to back.
Ouch, that UK pricing is going to hurt, for 6k less it would be no brainer to go Tesla. However, here in Australia those 2 exact same models are priced only 2k apart, with BYD being the cheaper option. In fact the top spec performance 4wd actually undercuts model 3 long range by 5k (thanks to gov. rebate), making it spectacular value in my opinion.
@@joshfinley9662 yes, given the similarities the BYD at £5k cheaper sounds like a very compelling option, especially if (like most people) you charge mostly at home and the supercharging network becomes less important (and Tesla is opening it up anyway)
In Singapore, BYD Seal is much more expensive than Tesla Highland Model 3. Also, the resales value of BYD EV is very bad.
battery alone i'll buy BYD... tesla only has LFP on its base models 3/Y..... where as all levels of Seal have LFP
@@fatdoi003 My comment was comparing the base models, which are the highest selling versions and have the same pack chemistry - but sure, if you want an LFP pack and a long range model then best not to get the Tesla LR variant
Great review 👍
It’s a nice looking car but I thought that saloon car sales have tanked over the last few years given the rise of SUV’s. Aren’t manufacturers competing for a piece of an ever smaller pie? I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla stop selling the Model 3 here within a few years given the Model 2 will probably come in a hatch/SUV configuration and be far cheaper.
I think people need to consider whether they always need an SUV in the move to EVs as they will never be as efficient. As we move to EVs for environmental concerns we also need to consider the type of EV we move too.
Sd slot is for the dash cam, annoyingly only in china but can buy it and install it yourself. I think android auto is wireless
cheers
I love how the EV wheels are not ugly by default too!
Looks better than a Tesla. One of the reasons i'm thinking of buying it.
Guys, it is far away from Tesla. Still work to do for BYD until they will catch Tesla. But definitely on the right track compared with other OEM’s. Definitely some German OEM’s should get very concerned!!!

How reliable is it
Correction: Android Auto IS wireless with BYD Seal. Apple Carplay is not.
Tesla is just a fancy brand that’s all expensive
Getting one model's first version is not so right, because this model is updated by the customers' advices. Wait for the updated version dudes...
Can you get any model Seal with a glass roof delete?
Assuming next round of COE bidding price is S$135,000,
Tesla Model 3 Highland price is S$88,650 - S$5,000 + S$135,000 = S$218,650
BYD Seal Premium price is S$239,888
Price difference is S$21,238
After ten years, the scrap value of BYD Seal Premium is S$2450, whereas Tesla Model 3 Highland is S$8450. Difference by S$6,000
So, BYD Seal Premium is S$27,238 more expensive than Tesla Model 3 Highland.
Thanks to the competition from BYD, now I can afford to buy a cheaper Tesla!👍👏💪🇸🇬
here @ australia, Seal performance sells for A$70000, that's U$45000..... even cheaper than a tesla 3HL LR @ A$75000.... we even have a base Seal @ A$51000 = U$33000

Until it outsells the Tesla Model 3 its not killing anything...these grabby "Tesla killer" headlines have been doing the rounds for years still we wait.....That being said test drove one the other day and its a very capable car, good quality, smooth ride, bags of power. But not perfect...
1. Lane keep assist is on drugs. Anything less than perfect central lane placement results in being yanked around and being beeped at by the system.
2. Make the most horrific noise at low speeds under 20 mph through the speakers...It will annoy you to death. Its like a pedestrian warning sound but played to the driver instead of the pedestrians...strange.
3. Currently software limited to 88kw charging despite claiming to be up to 150kw. That means 10-80% will take 40 minutes, too slow in my opinion. (A Tesla can do the same in little under 20min)
4. Cars ordered now indeed will come with indicators on right (my test car had this also and its trippy although BYD said from April they will go to the left 👌)
5. The sat nav is pants (luckily the carplay/android auto part can negate this)
6. The blending between regen and disc is also really poorly done.
7. Accelerator isnt linear, first part of pedal does nothing and the bottom part has all the meat.
8. The UI isnt great. Whilst Tesla has quite a bit of screen stabbing their UI is logical and easy to use. Its idiot proof abit like how apple make their IOS.
That being said, those points aside its probably one of the most refined well built cars ive driven in a LONG time. If they can sort those bits (and most can be through software) itll be up there with the best for sure. It drives like it comes from the land of S Class/7 Series. So fairplay to them. It can only get better.
You don't have a typical British accent :)

What a tiresome title. If anything this is a BMW 3 Series killer, Camry killer, Jetta killer, Mustang Mach E killer, ID 4 killer. Tesla and BYD will do just fine.
✌🏾
More words devoted to Tesla on thumbnail/title than to byd. Lol
And your point is?
That although you present a BYD, you first frame Tesla and thus give (both linguistic and visual) prominence to it as a brand-model. This way you, and all the others who do this, offer Tesla even more reach to an audience that would be interested in another electric car maker. By doing so BYD is backgrounded, missing the point of the "killer" of Tesla, or of at least a good product. You might think that mentioning TESLA and KILLER will attract people to your video, but you don't consider the effect this might have on the product you are reviewing; you have already undermined it. Alternatively I would recommend that your thumbnail/title focuses on the advantages of the BYD. This way audiences will be more lured to proceed and watch your video, and you will offer BYD the prominence it deserves. Imagine if you started your video by saying "you are watching a GadgetsBoy video, which is better than Carwow", even if it were better, you have just reminded me to watch carwow, which I would probably do instantly. @@GadgetsBoy

@@gregturner_awoddoesn't match Tesla in which way?
Range, software updates.
"Killer" implies "significantly better in many aspects".
NOT the case with the Seal.

I honestly didn't feel that much difference in the suspension of the cars 🤷♂️
The only thing I really noticed was the 0-100 .. But even the 5.9sec on the RWD is stupidly fast anyway 😅
I ordered the RWD for the extra range, cheaper insurance and the cost of the car, since it all adds up tbh.
Haha fair. But I did say they were pretty much same experience tho. Where I noticed it was after I’d been on the test track with it. Good decision tho, range over everything

It’s not a Model 3 killer, if it is, why?You even called Seal a viable option, or a consideration if not wanting Model 3. Clickbait.
Not sure I understand your point? No brand is killing another in reality, it’s a figure of speech. The Seal is a perfect match or alternative if you don’t want a boring Tesla for your money.
@@GadgetsBoy "Tesla Model 3 Killer" is absolutely a figure of speech, but it implies that the BYD will make the Model 3 redundant, or at the very least take a majority of the Model 3's sales. After all, it's hard to say with a straight face that the BYD has killed the Tesla if the Tesla sells twice as many as the BYD. As I think the OP is pointing out, in the video you correctly point out that the BYD is a great alternative option to the Tesla, but as I mentioned in a previous comment, you didn't demonstrate that the BYD is superior to the Model 3, which is really what is required for it to be a Model 3 Killer.
Personally I think "Model 3 Killer?" would be a less misleading title, but obviously do whatever you see fit to drive engagement and build your brand! Lots of really great RUclipsrs don't give in to clickbait and their growth suffers as a result.
