  • In 1933, Cajun Viking Records discovered a young, handsome, cowboy crooner by the name of Etienne Gautreaux. He hailed from the big city of Opelousas, Louisiana. He was better known as "The Cowboy Couillon" because of his offstage antics and his frequent scandals with the local ladies. Realizing the vast talent of this young musician, Cajun Viking Records immediately signed him to the biggest record deal of that time. On the promise to record with the record company, Etienne was paid two dollars, a pack of cigarettes, and a sack of crawfish. He finally hit the big time! Although most of his recordings were lost, the record company was able to save a few tracks from those early sessions. This is one of them. Hope you enjoy it.

    LYRICS
    [Piano Intro]
    [Vocalization]
    [Verse]
    Evangeline, down by the bayou,
Where the Spanish moss hangs low
    In the heart of Louisiana
Her story's whispered soft and slow
    Underneath the moonlit cypress
And she waits for true love's hand
Sweet Evangeline waits by the bayou
To once again be held by her man
    [Vocalization]
    [Steel Guitar/Guitar Solo]
    [Vocalization]
    [Verse]
    Down in Saint Martinville
    She waits there, still
    Beneath that grand oak tree
    And she hopes and prays
    For the day
Her heart can be set free
    [Vocalization]
    [Fade to Black]
