I started at GIT in August of 1986. I miss that period in my life. What a magical year!! Many of my classmates are still dear friends to this day, so the value of one year spent at the Musicians Institute was greater than simply becoming a better musician!!
86 was the year I started. Truly the Golden Era.
I attended GIT in 79/80 (very early in the schools history)...seeing my mentors again: Les Wise (GENIUS) Ron Eschete, Don Mock, Joe Diorio and Howard Roberts sure has brought back memories. It has been almost 40 years !!!!!! since I was there......where the "F" has the time gone?....So proud that the school has evolved into what it is today. (anyone from the 79/80 class is welcome to reach out to me)
PAUL GILBERT. Hands down. The year is 2022 and he's still one of the greatest guitarists in the history of guitar music.
Paul Hanson, awesome guitar player, teacher and really a cool dude.
Paul Gilbert starts at 2:28
I attended Summer Session 86...then went for the 1 year 89/90.....What an amazing time!!!....I would do it again in a heartbeat!!!!
Wow! What a memory. This was my class, '85-'86. I'm the kid in the blue shirt at 6:04 at age 21. Best time ever!!
@@tonesmyth can i ask you something about MI? in pvt?
Best single year of my life! I'd go back to those days right now if I could. GIT grad - March '88 - March '89.
March 89 March 90 right here!!
I wanted to go so bad in 1988 but couldn't afford the summer session or the full year class. I still feel disappointed to this day.
There in 1985/1986....Great seeing so many of the friends I had made. I also recall this video being made. Just an amazing time.
83-84 is when i went and it was a great experience. Helped me get my footing. Its hard to believe it was only 3,400 back then. Great teachers and classes. 2 teachers auditioned for zappa and 1 got the runner up position behind wackerman. Good memories and lots of amazing talent.
thanks for posting I went there 86-87 so cool seeing so many of my old instructors and the school itself. Paul Gilbert was one of my favorites he looks so young 🙂 also they left off a couple of my favorites from that year Jennifer Batten was teaching there in 86 but hadn't got famous yet. Another favorite not mentioned I loved Les Wise's Jazz improve class even though I was more from a metal/classical/rock background 👍 also if anyone is interested I have a whole series of videos talking about different classes, instructors and what was expected of students in 86-87 when I attended
We graduated together.
@@chrisclermont456 That's cool, that year was a great time for me (even though I was totally broke & ended up having to work at the Arby's right by the school to pay rent 🙂) but so many great instructors & great students that were inspiring to me 👍P.S. I'm going to check out your channel after writing this

I was there for the Sumner Session 1988 and this video brings back so many memories . I was Malcolm in the band Loud and Proud a AC/DC tribute band . Best times . 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
I was a guitar counselor at GIT Summer Session 1988.
@@sannaluoma-clermont2975 I wonder if we ever jammed together . I had private lessons on the weekends with a killer instructor !!!
Thats the year I went, '86, and Paul Gilbert was my private teacher.
Then you were one of my classmates!! It's Chris Clermont. Remember when Paul came in with the drill bit with picks attached to it (for the very first time)??? He was Funny AF!!
What an experience that was! Great memories...
Man, that's a cool video. I really wanted to go to that school back in the day, but a move to LA, plus the cost of the school just wasn't in the works.
So much greatness abounding in this vid! Thank you for sharing--and retaining its radness, so many years later!
radness
To think we sat in P1 or P2 and watch all this talent like it was just another day. It was just another day. Scott Henderson was my private instructor and Frank Gambale was in my class. This was a life changing experience.
If you were a serious Guitarist, Bassist, or Drummer in the 80's. This was the place to be.
The two greatest fusion guitar players in the world right there,
So frank was scotts student as well ? Or who was frank s instructor??
@@tonyflorez703 Frank was not an instructor there yet. He was a student. He learned from a lot of great people such as Don Mock, Joe Diorio, Robben Ford. We had great people come through the school such as Holdsworth.
@@tim6string right on man
Thanks for replying, frank is my heroe, ive heard that frank took lessons from scott henderson i dont know if thats true, but man, i wouldve give anything to meet these amazing guitar players like you did,
It doesnt get any better than frank and scott , take care tim, thanx for sharing your experience there!
Awesome memories!
And the great Ron Eschete'
I attended 86-87. Best thing I ever did.
We graduated together!!

@@sannaluoma-clermont2975 Two years ago, I commented from my wife's account somehow!! 😮😂😂😂
What a great video. Sigh I want to go but in 1986.
1:42 Dan Gilbert ! ! !
I was there 87-88…. who worked at NRG part time?? Calling people around the US conducting surveys about potential movie ideas?? Lived on Highland Ave 5 minutes from the Hollywood Bowl
The Hairstyles is a must!
Does anyone remember the name of the song that Paul Gilbert did with Paul Hanson and Tim Bogert on the cassette tape that GIT would send out to prospective students?
Sounds to me that Howard Roberts had his priorities very straight. Tremendously rare.
What tune is scott playing at 16:50
Marabi from the jeff berlin album Champion
lol, Racer X track in their promo
17:26 someone has the tablature of that ??? is beauty
What if you are over 60 years old
Steve I am an alumni, there were multiple ages of adults that were there! You can go even at 60!!
Thanks for sharing that. I was there in 1988-89. Great place to study music, but by the same token, very cookie cutter in it's approach.
Sounds like a you problem .
Cookie cutter? HUH?
