Like Hendrix and Vai he has large hands which helped him reach up and play the e, a and d strings with the same speed as the others and all over the neck. Great player.
Saw Racer X earlier that day at the Ibanez booth at Chicago's McCormick Place. I can remember seeing Paul and Bruce sweep pick and thinking "what the heck is that"? I also saw Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan arrive in a limo and head over to unveil the Jem that same day. A magical time
Only sloppy part was the drill bit 😂 Rest of it was amazing as always. Seen loads of his vids over the years but never seen this performance so thanks for the upload 👍
Did Eddie use drill first or Paul inspire him on the poundcake. I read Eddie use the drill when his tech left the drill on the recording console after replacing the tubes in Eddie's soldano amp while recording for F,'*k album that released in 1991.
@@ghostwriter1415 For me Eric Johnson is untochable, unique emotional style...Greg Howe also is amazing and so is Tony Macalpine...And of course the LIVING legend Jason Becker. We need to add Yngwie to the tier and the late great Criss Oliva from Savatage
1987? So ironic (not sure appropriate word) that he played a Van Halen Eruption section with a drill with the picks, then later EVH played the opening of Poundcake with a drill. I can’t tell by the blurry video, but it would be even more amazing if Paul’s drill was a Makita.
It was a Makita. And i never heard Paul complain about someone supposedly "stealing" from him, let alone about his Idol EVH, he always encouraged people learning his stuff.
That wasn't the objective to those guitar solos to the few that were even capable of doing that to that level of technique,It's funny also that everytime some burnt out I've encountered in my life that has criticized speed picking or just a high level of skill on the instrument, I've told them,"I have a guitar in my car" If you can play at or near that level then I'll listen to your opinion on it,and respect it if it's logical, insightful, etc...Otherwise,if they won't or most likely can't because they've never gotten past the pentatonic, burnt out riffer stage, that every wannabe guitar wanker, weekend warrior at your local bar does, lol. Then their opinion is meaningless.I was heavily immersed in all the technique, still am to some extent, but I've always equally been into the Art of the music,Classical guitar is highly Technical but in a different way, and of course it's very Artistic. The whole point is that Paul has always been musical like myself,it's just that he was so young then and not as musically mature as he is now,but nevertheless,In the context of this video clip, again,It was mostly for the sole objective to impress people with his chops, which is very impressive, especially at that age.
While I was admittedly thrilled by Paul's solos at the time, I don't think solos like this have aged well. There's nothing musical about this. Paul has fortunately developed a lot as a musician and in his approach to music.
Not a good representation of who he is as a player at this time. Yea the technique was there but he had a lot of other traits in check that other guys dont (like his vibrato)
To me, it has emotional impact. It´s exciting, uplifting and inspirational. No, it doesn´t move me to tears or make me consider falling in love again. But that surely isn´t the purpose of Paul´s solo. ;-)
Sounds horrible. And I love Paul. It is lacking restraint or any kind of dynamic, endemic of the 80's fretboard gymnastics event that guitar became in that period.
nothing special, all flat and a lot of imitating the style of other guitarists, for guitar solos eddie van halen king still creates a lot of new sounds and technical skills
They did have terrible tones in those days due to the shred guitar having to cut through the loudness of the band,so the sound was very "mid" range, piercing sound, even when Paul was with Mr. BIG,I saw them live in Hollywood, his tone was very piercing, saw Steve Vai a few months later at same venue,But Steve Vai sounded like I was listening to the best stereo system, apparently Steve also had brought his own board guy I was told, which was apparently rare in those days. But Paul had amazing skill, still does, only now his shredding is musical.
I saw them many times as a teenager (mostly at the Country Club). They were using Metaltronix modded Marshalls (which was literally across the street), and when Paul would whack the loud button it was almost unbearably loud (but we were young and dumb and didn't care :) ). To this day, I don't think anyone has ever touched Paul's speed and accuracy, and possibly no one ever will.
Don't get me wrong, I love Paul Gilbert, but let's be honest. He sounds like he's strangling a cat here. Sometimes I reflect on how much I miss the 80s, but then again it was an over emphasis on speed and quantity of notes that didn't speak much to the soul.
Well said, look at him now,a mature musician with an amazing family and his wife is a very gifted musician as well, his latest records are a proof of his evolution.
If I hadn't seen him play live back then I would think that portions of this video were sped up. Holy CRAP!!! He's matured as a musician over the years and so have I but I can still appreciate how amazing this is.
I saw him back in those days a bunch of times in L.A. I knew their singer Jeff martin who went on to play drums with Jake E. Lee's Badlands. I jammed with him a number of times. He liked my guitar playing. He's a cool dude. The first time I saw Racer X I was absolutely blown away by Paul's playing. Amazing. He was so far superior to most players in the shred scene, which I was also a part of, that he was on a different planet. He's matured a lot over the years and really developed a much better style. I like how he goes for more vintage, classic rock tones. I didn't like his tone with Racer X. I think it improved with Mr. Big. His latest album has amazing tone and playing.
I don't know if you can hear it, but I'm definitely hearing all the EVH undertone references on this piece. I hear Eruption, Spanish Fly, Mean Streets intro. It seemed like he was using this as underlining footprint marker as to keep the audience engaged with some form of familiarity, if it was their first time hearing him or seeing him play. I like how he used this strategy to incorporate it into his own playing style, to eventually show the world his own identity to the guitar.
the precision it takes to play like that, unbelievable 🤘🙂
His fingers are all the same length. It's insane. The speed is blinding.
At 21 years old he's killin' it.
Wasn't even 21 yet. This was June '87. Steve Vai and Joe Satriani also had sets at this show. It was an Ibanez event
I think he was about nineteen at the time. He was very young when he came to L.A. @@jahjah67
So clean and precise, and he's not even that gained up.
agree
That's pretty gained up... what do you guyhs considered gained up? double boosted recto?
Such ferocious picking!!!
And then you get older and play blues LOL
Change of age, change of musical taste i suppose..
Gundul mu atos
Exactly
The guys who end of playing blues, are the guys who either could never do this in the first place or just burn out and give up on playing seriously.
Ga mesisan reggae ta ?

Amazing..he will be Big someday…
Hell yeah! If he just keeps practicing he’ll be amazing!😜🤘😆
Good comment!
Yeah, I'm going to give him the nickname: Mr. Big
Hahaha
The king of guitar center.
Now that was super funny !

I can see he loves Eddy, he already started using a drill he was 21 years old of age!
After the Eddie part there's a little Yngwie I think.
Did Eddie use drill first or Paul inspire him on the poundcake. I read Eddie use the drill when his tech left the drill on the recording console after replacing the tubes in Eddie's soldano amp while recording for F,'*k album that released in 1991.
