Hey Mark, your group did a great job of restoring it. I remember shooting this back in 87. Scott Travis had me come down for this from Santa Barbara. I was at Brooks Institute at the time majoring in Motion Picture. This was shot on 1/2" video... nice job restoring it!

Great to meet you Steve!! Thanks for the info and the fantastic footage. It was a small crowd that day wasn’t it? I’m sure I saw you there. This was actually my first attempt. I’m much better at restoring now. I would like to contact you about maybe getting the rest of the raw footage? My email is kirbskirbs@gmail.com I would also like to credit you in the description, if that’s OK? Cheers!

Vai is essentially not a shredder, he could never play like this. He had to learn some shredding especially when he had to cover Yngwie stuff in Alcatrazz, and in his own words it was a pretty humbling experience.
But he did it very well considering everything, Steve is a skilled musician and player no matter what, he can shred if he has to. He's just not in Gilbert's league when it comes to shredding virtuosity, Vai is more into creating his own unique sounds with lots of effects and stuff.
Still Flexable, Passion & Warfare, Sex & Religion or the DLR's material are legendary.

Paul is more blues oriented, pentatonic and natural minor. Yngwie was all about harmonic minor and diminished, I find Yngwie boring compared to Paul Gilbert. Yngwie was a pioneer, but not the most interesting shredder of the time

    • @livingbeing1113
      @livingbeing1113 2 года назад

It was a natural progression, first Eddie in the late 70s who started it, then early 80s Yngwie appeared and from then on everything changed.
To be fair Al Di Meola was already pioneering fast picking in the late 70s, and Uli Jon Roth playing neo-classical passages with Scorpions, for example.
But yeah the two biggest influencers were certainly Eddie and Yngwie.

They really are, Haven't got to see Gilbert live, yet damnit! but I have been very very very fortunate enough to see Buckethead play solo shows at least 6-7 separate times, he really is amazing and special elite all time great player i8n his own right, and yet Gilbert is even still especially in his prime like late 80s obviously- somehow noticeably faster at shredding etc. Then even fricking Buckethead is! that's insane to even say out loud. But both of them are just at stupid high levels, Like Paul Gilbert as far as I'm concerned especially in his prime is probably the literal greatest shredder ever when it comes to both straight up maximum speed, as well as technical/cleanness, maybe like prime Petrucci also in the late 1980s or so, and Jason Becker in his sadly very very short prime like maybe at there level if they really compared played there absolute fastest cleanest shredding as they could maybe it'd be arguably just flat out draws lol, but I really consider Gilbert to be the literal best and most perfect shredder/ fastest in history, and Buckethead himself is"onlyyyy" like at least top 10 lol, as if that's not amazing in itself or anything, which it is by the way love both them to man!.

@@memeacademy2295 Not true, I know what you mean someone with just a glance of Buckethead understandably would think that, but its really just not the case like at all, the reality is Buckethead has and does do it all, and your not wrong to some extent- he literally has some albums out if say are basically just what some might call"noise"nonsense, consider it the guitar equivalent of modern art lol....but the thing is he also has countless albums which are amazing and have every single thing you could think of, all time great shredding of course and speed, but great creative chords and good phrasing, and believe or or not just off the top of my head and I have probably only head maybe 30 of his albums all the way through out of the 300+ or so he has released since 1993, id say he has no less then a couple dozen songs that can even be considered both catchy as well as complex, far from just nonsense or "noise" or mindless shredding but very good some even surprisingly so I mean the kind of songs that'd make people who believe what you do about him seriously reconsider! I do know why you think that though.

I mean I have never got to see Gilbert live yet unfortunately, I have been lucky and fortunate enough to see Buckethead play solo shows with just him and like a whatever for some back drums and parts if needed, etc , and saw him also a couple times with a random bass player for few songs, as well as a couple times with Primus 3rd drummer/ Bucketheads friend Brain on drums, and then also super fortunate enough to catch one of the rare as heck only ever had I believe just the one single tour-for there also lone and only single debut album they released back in what 2004 or so- Sweet show with Les Claypool/ "Bucket of Bernie Brains", then yeah just Buckethead mostly by himself like 5-6 separate times aside from those, and he absolutely rightfully so deservedly has routinely made like top 15.top 25 top 50 etc. All time fastest/best shredders list no doubt, and some nights he had good but not great nights, one time he had a well for him what would be considered "bad" night lol, and few times just close to perfect, and he played some runs which absolutely can hold there own speed/technique wise against 99.9 percent of the best and fastest Guitar players in history, and yet even Buckethead is noticeably slower and somehow less technically//technical for lack of better terms lol then fricking Paul Gilbert is....and that's just ridiculous to even say out loud, that's not an insult to Buckethead, It just means Gilbert is on such an insanely stupid high level in technique and speed even now absolutely even right now is he slower yes pretty much everyone is in there 50s especially if that play a wide range of styles as Gilbert has obviously gravitated towards in his later/recent post Racer X career, but he still is among the fastest around even today, but like in the mid/late 80s/early 90s, but especially mid/late 80s the speed and technique he played with on Guitar was I Really believe the literal best ever, just as far as speed/technique/timing/ and how efficient he was and how little it strained him it truly was/is borderline super human.

THE absolute definition of shred, period! Paul has the best alternate picking on the planet. Of course, this insane display of pure virtuosity and technical prowess is for the shredder community only. As such, it is unmatched. Together with Yngwie and Jason Becker, Paul will always be remembered as a shred master extraordinaire, although he's been treading different paths in music lately.

Paul's picking is indeed the best in the business, and his way of shredding was the pinnacle of it in my opinion. Such a shame he doesn't play like this anymore.
Just the picking, dynamics, string-skipping instead of sweeping, and the immaculate precision, using a very simple and stripped down tone, not hiding behind effects and such. That's why i call him the "ultimate shredder".

I honestly dont know who is the literal fastest I mean when comparing peak peak prime vs prime, Like say Petrucci late 80s from that change of seasons song/solo part, Jason becker in the short time he had,Shawn Lane, and then there is Paul Gilbert, if Gilbert isn't the literal fastest here in his absolute peak prime aged say 17-23 then he damn sure 100 percent is top 5 all time, its beyond absurd and amazing as heck.
