Changing a water main stop tap live

- Dale and Garreth are often asked what the do when they are not on the road……. WELL…… not normally this, but after the utility service gave every excuse to stop a leak, there was no other choice than to get stuck in ourselves.
From cutting the pipe to re-sealing it took 3 1/2 minutes. Not bad going considering we had 3 attempts with problems along the way.
I would strongly advise not to do this in a lived in and functioning house.
Garreth has been in building for 24 years, and only had to do this 3 times in his life. Each time has been a struggle but achieved.
Having no working service tap outside the property is always a big problem. Check yours and get it fixed if it’s not working.
I think it’s best to do what we usually do and stay on the road with The Sound of Springsteen:
www.sospringst...
It's usually half way through the drama when the customer pops in to ask "how's it going?" 😂😂
Good honest view of it being changed. 👍
Buy a squeeze off
I haven't seen a pipe insert (stiffener) go in🤔 old alcathene and HDPE pipes usually had copper inserts that are nightmare to find these days... try using a Philmac UTC next time, it's sooo much easier to put on, no need for nuts and olives. Anyway, it's always fun to watch someone doing it live lol
I used a squeeze off on the poly pipe when I did mine. Worked a treat.
when they weren't using squeeze offs I thought it was a steel pipe but then they used plastic pipe snips. No insert on the mope either?
is it common to use squeeze offs on water? I've only ever seen/used them on yellow gas supplies.
Putting that olive over the freshly cut pipe was always the one tricky thing that was going to be difficult.
learning from your experience I think I would have prepared the pipe before cutting it. Shaving it down with a knife to form a taper.
Excellent use of the 1/2 inch plastic pipe stuffed inside the supply pipe, saved many gallons of mess with that one.
Great video!
Reminds me of the time I had to replace the outside stopcock, 3 foot down in a muddy trench and it was getting dark. Luckily I didn't have to worry about flooding a property, but I ended up tightening it under water!
I dont know why I enjoyed that, I just did. :) Well done lads.
Mummy, can i retrain to be an electrician!!!! 😀
I've got to say, really well done. You didn't panic, (on camera, I bet you felt different 😀), if that olive hadn't snagged you would of made that look easy😀😀😀
Well done👍
Did you put an insert in ?
😂😂😂😂
I wondered that as well. That olive wasn’t on very far either.
I learnt the hard way- what happens when you forget!
It would be a bitch to get one in though under mains pressure.
I would suggest using safety goggles as well.
Did it stay in?
I was there with them in spirit! Shame about the insert though, others than that good effort
usually it is MUCH easier to attach an OPEN valve to the spot. then it is not trying to force all that water to push the coupling or valve off. Sure, a fair bit of water comes out, but it is quick to get the valve on with no pressure trying to push it off. Once it is attached, CLOSE the valve. Simple enough.
At least you kept the dust down.Proper plumbing been there many times lads well done
Exactly, anyone can offer advice, but we've all done it, and they were brave enough to put it on here. respect lads👍
Very good work.
Love the armchair expert comments...no effing clue!
There's something I pervertedly enjoy about working on live pipework. I think it's the challenge and ensuring you have done the preparation of plan A , B, C and all the contingencies, etc... Followed by the relief!
Doing stuff like that when your in your own can be terrifying…good job there was an extra set of hands there to help or if could of gotten even messier!!
And I thought I was the only lunatic in the world daring to do something like that. Just one word of advice... next time remember to take off your jackets first so you have something dry to put on when the ordeal is over!!! Well done though!👍👍👍
Reminds me of the time I was in a house share back in 1995 when I returned to the house after the Christmas break to discover to my horror that the house and yard was turned into a private lake when the main riser suffered a frost break. I had to locate the main stop valve and then inform the house owner of the event and then secure alternative accommodation for 3 days until the shift was over. I worked 3 day compressed work week at that time. It took the landlord 7 days to pump out the house and get things back to relatively normal with dehumidifiers and heaters in each room on all day with open windows and fans to dry out the house. Insulation standards have improved since then and now I always put in a small heater and frost stat in any old house not always occupied which I am in charge of. Even a 60W bulb near a header tank or in the under sink inlet can be enough to prevent frost breakages in a cold snap. This doesn't need to be on all the time but only when a cold snap happens. Very common at Christmas break when houses are deserted for days while people visit their extended families far away from their usual homes.
Real men do it live good work guys 😎😎😎😎😎
Great work lads! Respect 💪
Bloody hell what a nightmare job hahaha. Well done lads
Brilliant video. I bet the missus still gave you a roasting for going down the pub after that EASY job
Sometimes there is no other solution and well done lads! Time for a quick shower, oh wait, you've already had one!
Yes, been there, and solo, I must have been barmy, but poor old dear had no water or heating in November, so you grit your teeth and just do it, well done boys, I’m guessing you used the music to drown the Swearing 😂 - Julie
Absolutely superb guys 😂 great watch.
Hi, that olive was only just on the end of the pipe, no insert either - I wouldn't let you anywhere near any of my customers !
Wire wool the pipe before cutting the olive will go on more easily
1/2 inch pipe?! 🤣
Very funny video (for us !) thanks for posting, hope that watch was waterproof !.
The Water Supply Companies could watch and learn a lot here
Last time I come home that wet, the missus gave me "that look".
What the hell have you been up to?
I had to pull a very wet snatch.
Then came the rolling pin treatment. See the bumps!?
Poor Loafer.
Good job you had that blue towel 😂 Nightmare job, dealt with. Well done.
D.I.M !!!!!! is all that needs to be said
As many others have already said no insert and the new olive was not fitted in far enough. Trouble ahead guys sorry.
U are so lucky u have help, plus not situated on the upper floors of a apartment building, or condo!!!!!!!!!!
The barriers were a wonderful idea, in theory.
No mains stopcock ??
Wind down clamp works too!
I’m not sure on that one, the old black Alkathene is a bit stiff to clamp - Julie
where's the insert on the black. pipe cannot leave it like that it will leak bunch of amateurs
' Here comes the pain! ' 😂
Been there ,but this still makes me laugh ,this is real world plumbing and you get an early shower so straight to the pub lol.
😂hilarious boys I'm crying just made my day
Strewth, well done chaps.
Insert lads!😂
good luck trying that on a german water main. often pvc pipes 2" and upwards and 10+ bars of pressure
10bar going into your house? No chance, surely.
@@sh3riff Why not? My pressure is 8 bar - tested by Welsh Water last week, who said its not excessive!
Hate those Germans
Nevada Handyman here. Excellent video - Hilarious.
No copper insert
No 3”4 olive
Good luck with the leak 😂😂😂
Good effort men
The snot hanging from his nose at the end says it all - a bit chilly was it?
With just a little training these men would soon become experts ---- well maybe not !!!!!!
Imperial copper makes snatching a nightmare because you just cant tell its imperial and getting that olive on when you domt have 3/4” ones on the van is a nighmare
That old black water main can squeeze together to close off to a degree it dont work on the blue we use now and also 22 mm olives and fittings go on, not saying it's easy though
Well done lads 👏👏 if you like this kind of video watch the one where the guy in America is working under a sink and floods the flat 😳 you have to feel for the poor lad 😢 but the homeowners response is hilarious 😂😂😂
He tried to save the property owner money, apparently, as there was a charge for shutting down the entire block of flats' water in that South American block. They all had to move out for damage repair! The fact that it was hot water really made you feel for the bloke. We've all been there.
Wow, great job! Out of interest, why couldn't you use a pipe freezer (proper one, not silly spray)
Didn't see an insert go in the plastic pipe
That was likely more fun for armchair watchers than it was for you.🤣 Hope the new kitchen (chipboard) units did not absorb any of that lot. Can you explain why a freeze kit was not suitable in this instance? Well done anyway.👍
There was only 8 inches of imperial pipe above the concrete. Too close to work with a freeze kit, and probably risks the ice plug coming straight out once the pipe was cut.
Could of broke out the concrete in the floor, but sometimes it’s just quicker to get wet.
@@garrethhicklin81 Thank you for taking the time to answer Gareth.😀👍
Totally Nuts!
Always wondered if this was possible
Comedians at work.. Entertaining
All you needed was a squeeze tool easy job
No stiffener ..... thats a bodge job !
Is your watch waterproof?
Can of pipe freeze every time
Did the plastic pipe need an insert?
You should of used the vice grips on the live plastic pipe to stop the flow
And risk splitting the live pipe, causing an even bigger nightmare?
Too me to you😂
Looked like you were connecting to old black pipe and if it was you didn't fit an insert so you could be getting as big a wetting in years to come
do it properly use squeeze off tool wouldent get wet at all
You should have called a plumber in really.
I think you had too much resistance in your set up. Simpler may have been better, maybe practice a few times at home till you perfect it !!!😝😝
Use professionals next
Time
❤
Could you not have used the freeze spray on it.
Yes, there was enough space on the poly, but they didn't have a kit and didn't want to hire one. The worse thing is that they didn't fit a poly insert for the new valve.
Use pushfit or speedfit next time 🤣🤣🤣
It was imperial pipe. Tried that first.
It’s also a pre 1934 house which makes the utility company responsible up to the water meter or stop tap. Couldn’t wait the 3 months they made the appointment for, just needed the kitchen back in…
Squeeze off tool mate don't be so tight!
Think I'll stick with gas lol
The water pressure didn't seem all that bad. I've replaced angle stops in 1/2" copper lines live with a lot more pressure.
A squeeze off tool, would have been easier😂
We used to use molegrips. I really don't think these two have ever done any plumbing at all.
Black Poly? you should have just squeezed it with a clamp tool. Get one.
Yeah you could have literally just bent the plastic pipe with your hands till it creased... if you dont laugh youll cry
squeese off tool sorted
It would have saved you a lot of hassle if you had just loosened the nut on the old tap instead of cutting the pipe. 😅 💦
Should get combat pay for those jobs
Cowboys
NEXT time just get the shutoff valve (opened) attached, tighten pressure fitting , close the valve and THEN hook up the line that that valve is feeding . (I've DONE this, on first try in about 30 seconds)
of course.. a lot less pressure at the new tap joint and less water inside the house/kitchen.. never thought of that (I'm a DIYer).. Good call! 👍
Irritating and unnecessary background music
The video camera is not close enough to show what you are doing. Waste of viewing time unfortunately
why did you not just clapm the poly pipe with a clamp designd to clamp polypropaline pipe, your cowboys
Amateurs.why would you in a new kitchen
😂😂love it. Been there.
Wallies why oh why would you do this at all.
Buy a squeeze off
