Changing a water main stop tap live

  • Dale and Garreth are often asked what the do when they are not on the road……. WELL…… not normally this, but after the utility service gave every excuse to stop a leak, there was no other choice than to get stuck in ourselves.
From cutting the pipe to re-sealing it took 3 1/2 minutes. Not bad going considering we had 3 attempts with problems along the way.
I would strongly advise not to do this in a lived in and functioning house.
Garreth has been in building for 24 years, and only had to do this 3 times in his life. Each time has been a struggle but achieved.
Having no working service tap outside the property is always a big problem. Check yours and get it fixed if it’s not working.
I think it’s best to do what we usually do and stay on the road with The Sound of Springsteen:

I haven't seen a pipe insert (stiffener) go in🤔 old alcathene and HDPE pipes usually had copper inserts that are nightmare to find these days... try using a Philmac UTC next time, it's sooo much easier to put on, no need for nuts and olives. Anyway, it's always fun to watch someone doing it live lol

when they weren't using squeeze offs I thought it was a steel pipe but then they used plastic pipe snips. No insert on the mope either?
is it common to use squeeze offs on water? I've only ever seen/used them on yellow gas supplies.

Putting that olive over the freshly cut pipe was always the one tricky thing that was going to be difficult.
learning from your experience I think I would have prepared the pipe before cutting it. Shaving it down with a knife to form a taper.
Excellent use of the 1/2 inch plastic pipe stuffed inside the supply pipe, saved many gallons of mess with that one.
    Great video!

Reminds me of the time I had to replace the outside stopcock, 3 foot down in a muddy trench and it was getting dark. Luckily I didn't have to worry about flooding a property, but I ended up tightening it under water!

usually it is MUCH easier to attach an OPEN valve to the spot. then it is not trying to force all that water to push the coupling or valve off. Sure, a fair bit of water comes out, but it is quick to get the valve on with no pressure trying to push it off. Once it is attached, CLOSE the valve. Simple enough.

Reminds me of the time I was in a house share back in 1995 when I returned to the house after the Christmas break to discover to my horror that the house and yard was turned into a private lake when the main riser suffered a frost break. I had to locate the main stop valve and then inform the house owner of the event and then secure alternative accommodation for 3 days until the shift was over. I worked 3 day compressed work week at that time. It took the landlord 7 days to pump out the house and get things back to relatively normal with dehumidifiers and heaters in each room on all day with open windows and fans to dry out the house. Insulation standards have improved since then and now I always put in a small heater and frost stat in any old house not always occupied which I am in charge of. Even a 60W bulb near a header tank or in the under sink inlet can be enough to prevent frost breakages in a cold snap. This doesn't need to be on all the time but only when a cold snap happens. Very common at Christmas break when houses are deserted for days while people visit their extended families far away from their usual homes.

There was only 8 inches of imperial pipe above the concrete. Too close to work with a freeze kit, and probably risks the ice plug coming straight out once the pipe was cut.
Could of broke out the concrete in the floor, but sometimes it’s just quicker to get wet.
