What a surreal time. SP finally back together in their original form with a new album coming, Y2K looming, Columbine happened a few days ago and the news was flooded with the hows and whys
What’s really cool is that people who were lucky enough to see the Arising Tour also got to hear all of these Machina era tunes for the first time. Cash Car Star would have blown my mind. Thanks for posting.
I dunno if it was the whole tour, but not to mention that queens of the stone age was their opening act here in NYC . I ran out and bought rated R the next day. Amazing amazing amazing amazing show Am Ala
Man, how time flies... I was studying in LA as an exchange student in '99. Couldn't get a ticket for the Roxy (trying to book anything online with a slow modem was as bad as getting Taylor Swift tickets these days ahah) but i've managed to get one at the Spreckels theatre. We had friends in SD so it was a great excuse to visit them and check out that city. I remember arriving at the theatre and seeing 'real' Pumpkins fans. A lot of people came with special outfits (you wouldn't see such a thing in Paris). Someone came to me and gave me a sheet of paper (i still have it) where 'Starla' was printed on it, hoping the band would play it during the encore. That person didn't know what was coming... I entered the hall and saw the merch table. There was too many people and the prices seemed pretty high for a 19 YO student that was trying to buy a guitar. In retrospect, I felt bad i didn't got a souvenir. So, a couple of years later, I've managed to snag a vintage tee before the prices went nuts (this baby is valued somewhere between 100 & 400$ depending on who you're asking). And, thanks to a sale on the official site, i've also got a poster from an old stock. So, i rushed into my seat because the show was about to start. While in LA i was cruising to the sound of KROQ and was starting to hear about that new band... QotSA. What a treat it was to see they were playing as the 1st act. Then came the real treat. I was on the balcony (bummer) but 1st row. Sounds was pretty good and seeing them in such a small venue was amazing. Obviously, getting to hear new songs (Virex aka the Imploding Voice was my new favorite song when i've heard the 1st bootlegs), oldies (la Dolly Vita, that was a surprise even for troo fans), alternative versions (BSBT) and live versions of Adore songs (Pug, always a favorite of mine despite the bad rep') was amazing. After the widescope Adore tour, seeing the 4 of them playing in a rock but progressive manner was very refreshing. The look they were sporting was pretty cool. Mostly stripped-down black outfits that suited perfectly the back-to-basics mood of the night. Billy was starting what would become the infamous 'Gaultier' skirt joke (in this case, it was a bit different - and better - he looked like a goth reverend/sailor). One person seemed a bit off though... D'arcy had some sort of a goth-redneck look with a cow-by hat that was masking partially her face. Pictures who appeared on internet a couple of weeks later showed she went under facial surgery. In retrospect, with the drug addiction rumours that followed, it was not hard to guess what was soon to be unveiled... All was great until we started to witness what seemed to be an argument on stage between D'arcy and Billy. This climaxed when, while when the band was still playing Some, D'arcy stormed off stage, not even playing the outro. I didn't have a phone connected to internet in my pocket back then, so i couldn't check what was the normal setlist. But, when the house got flooded with light, i felt we just got fucked (the concert was barely 90min long, not usual for the SP). I remember leaving the venue with a bittertaste in my mouth. Being one of the few to witness this tour was a privilege i'll never forget (especially since i'm not even from the US). But, i knew we would get bad news at some point... While i was waiting for my friends to pick me up, i've called a friend of mine in France with a payphone in the street (" 'member payphones?! "), with whom I was playing music with (we were sharing the same love for the SP. I got my 1st bootleg thanks to his older brother). I was obviously excited by the music i've just heard but i've also had to tell him what i've seen at the end. This was a pretty emotional moment because, at that time, the SP were still kinda the kings of our world (even if Adore got a lukewarm reception i've never felt that way) so, i was pretty hopeful for the next chapter... I came back with my buddies, we got drunk on their cheap couch, hang out the next day around the pier, drove around the city playing mixtapes (my car only had a cassette player). I remember i've put the 4 rare Siamese b-sides on it plus some Beatles (Dear Prudence) and some tracks of the latest Money Mark album ("I've got my hand in your heaaaaad..."). We drove back in LA that night. I dropped my friend at our flat and I decided to see what was up at the Roxy. The Universe probably decided to give me some compensation for the night before because, when i've arrived at the venue, someone handed a promo poster to me. KROQ was obviously sponsoring the event and printed some for the fans. The Roxy is a tiny venue on the Sunset strip. I knew there was a back-alley where bands were coming in/out. Security put a riot-type-of-fence but fans where waiting there (i think, at that time, the band already had finished playing). I didn't wait long, and the band started to come out. I remember seeing Billy & James from afar, barely waving at us. No sign of D'arcy. But... guess what? Jimmy came to us (we were probably 20 pax, so it was quite intimate)! He started signing those posters (still have it) and he even stayed a bit to chat. I remember fondly our conversation, especially when he mentioned the french drummers & bands he liked. I've met him another time and he always been generous and friendly to me and to fans (to be fair, Billy also, in his own way). Little i knew the last chapter wouldn't play like i had hoped... Soon enough, i've learned that we got 'robbed' 5 songs (most concerts of this tour featured 3 encores (we got only 1). The 2nd one featured 3 new songs (not hearing 'Home' & 'With every light' live still pisses me). The 3rd one featured 'Geek USA' (this gave me murder ideas) & 'Siva' and, in some cases, there were some additional songs (1979), cool teases ('Space Jam' & 'Starla') & even covers-jams(teases). Memories... like Rivers Cuomo would sing years later. At least i got my first connection with SD (years later, i would fall in love with a crazy girl from there) and i would have seen D'arcy one last time!
Great to see and hear a complete show from this tour. But also bittersweet... Jimmy back, James still in, D'Arcy on her way out. Awesome to see the original band playing Machina songs
I’m glad to see this here! I was there, likely in the second row or somewhere up front. I always wanted a recording of this. I’ve seen them about 8 times and this was 1 of my favorite concerts.
Nothing wrong with the OP’s comment… it really was the last tour of the original SP. It was amazing and in SP style… of course the remaining members of the band have continued to ROCK, but give some respect to the original 4 members for kicking so much ass in early 1999, it wasn’t easy back then! Also, this was Jimmy’s practice tour. He needed a quick SP “primer” before they finished all the Machina & Machina II sessions. IMO, Jimmy’s most impressive drums are on the Machina records. Simply next level dynamics and power. They were at the beginning of the era that would be the peak of their artistry and chemistry. They were on fire like nothing else by Dec. 2, 2000.
Are there any other FULL Arising! shows on the web at all? I don’t remember seeing any video other than some clips here and there… wow, THANK YOU for sharing this… what a special moment in the band’s history! The energy around the band was so special! I definitely felt lucky to hear Machina live and early. Although being unfamiliar with the songs, it was a unique experience.

Saw this show. QOTSA opened. They were unbelievable. Then SP came and destroyed.
Agreed! Excellent and powerful show by both bands.

I love how the camera was fixed on Jimmy for La Dolly Vita. A great privilege to watch him play!
My favorite tour and first time seeing the Pumpkins
wow the fills and experimental drumming on PUG is a real treat
Yeah, Jimmy really crushed Pug into dust here.
Thanks a lot to Ram Dent for sharing with us this awesome show!
The Arising tour is my best SP tour. Thank you!
This made my morning ❤
This version of La Dolly Vida is incredible.

That was awesome! Sadly, D'arcy left after the next gig. They released more tix the day of the show. I was in the second to last row here. ❤
And then they mixed Machina like ASS. all the songs sounded so awesome live.
Been waiting for these for a long time! Thank you!

what a fucking set. still filled w so much regret that i didnt get into the roxy for this tour. 🥀🖤🥀
oh my goooood!!!!!
Was this stuck in a box all these years? Pretty cool, thanks!
Saw them at the Roxy the following night. Such an amazing show.
If I sat through blue skies bring tears AND glass and the ghost children in the same show, I'd also have lost my mind at a muzzle and soma encore.
Wound is incredible in this setlist
Whao, this Dross has a different thing going on in the middle than the recorded version.
Don't waste an hour and twenty-three minuites to find out the tape just cuts out an instant prior to the solo on Soma.
The 90s 😢
I wonder if this was Jimmy's kit he used on the 94 tour?
No, he used a power tour custom in 94 and here it’s a maple custom absolute. With Zildjian cymbals.
Last concert of darcy?

That version of Imploding Voice is...interesting. hes got a lot of balls to sing that falsetto infront of people

What’s with the Dr Beat at the beginning of CCS and SIYL?
they played more machina songs during the adore era than the actual machina era.
Great hearing so many Machina II songs here, Dross rips so hard.
could someone please tell me what song they are playing on minute 17?
