  • Naming off just a few of the main differences between the 7.3 IDI and 7.3 Powerstroke motor.. aside from the obvious, being that the IDI stands for in-direct injection while the PSD (powerstroke) is direct injection. How many other differences can you name?

    It’s enhanced because the idi blocks were just 6.9 blocks bored out so the cylinder wall got very thin

      @michaelbenoit248 4 месяца назад

      That’s why it’s not a good idea t rebuild a 7.3 block unless you sleeve it back to a 6.9 then turbo it.
      Love my 7.3 IDI but you gotta take care of that oil cooler, fuel system, & the oil leaks.

    The biggest difference is the IDI is indirect injection vs direct injection for the powerstroke.

    Idis are more fuel efficient. 21 to 1 compression. You are limited in the amount of boost they can handle because of that though.

    • @wildrosegarage4208

      I have both and have had a few and the powerstroke 7.3 always got better fuel mileage by about 20% in the same truck.

    Idi means indirect injection the fuel is injected into a pre combustion chamber in the cylinder head where a powerstroke is direct injected so the tip of the injector or the nozzle tip is poking out into through the head a little bit and the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder that is the biggest difference between the two

    Have a 99 7.3 and it’s alright I guess but the problem is you start getting more power out of your 7.3 and the egts will go threw the roof when towing broke a piston in half because I got it to hot but I still made it back home with out a tow truck and that is y I keep my old 7.3 o and I was pulling 10.000 pounds

    I thought the safe limit was 1,250 & that pistons started meltin at 1,500... I've seen 1,260 1 time when mine was an auto climbin a hill, I've heard u don't wanna maintain much over 1,100. Tho since the manual trans swap in my 92 idi i haven't let it get passed 1,110 when climbin grades & i haven't seen it get much passed that either

    You can advance or retard your timing on the pump which helps a lot, and also the fastest diesel engine in the world is still the Hypermax 7.3 idi which it was so powerful it destroyed the block multiple times.

    • @gavinmetcalfe140
      @gavinmetcalfe140 2 месяца назад

      Yep. To make a minimal amount of power youve got to spend huge money on turbos, injection pumps and injectors.
      Whereas the electronic ones you just buy a cheap chip and go to town.

    • @GMbowtie350
      @GMbowtie350 Месяц назад

      @@gavinmetcalfe140And then you melt the engine down because the stock components can’t handle the extra boost and fuel you’re throwing to it. You do realize the fastest 7.3 Powerstrokes are P pump conversions. “To make minimal power”, almost all drag Cummins builds are mechanical. What chip are you talking about? You mean a tuner? Is that the same chip everyone swears police Crown Vics have over civilian Crown Vics?

    • @gavinmetcalfe140
      @gavinmetcalfe140 Месяц назад

      @@GMbowtie350 I’m not talking about making huge dyno numbers. I’m talking g the average Joe that wants a bit more jam out of their truck.
      You buy a chip (yes chip, it’s not a tuner) and get a bit more power out of your stock truck. Whereas say a 7.3 idi you buy a turbo kit then an injection pump, you get all new injectors blah blah blah, more reliable yes, you can make huge power yes. It’s not cheap to upgrade hard parts like that though rather than just play with the computer a bit.
