      First, thank you for the info. Second, FYI, the cookware appliances you have linked, i.e. (to name 2 of them) the oven ($250) & rice cooker($150+) have, respectively, ceramic coated aluminum baking sheet & the other a plastic exterior, which you said in the video are toxic (ceramic coated can chip and release aluminum, plastic gives off toxins when heated) Perhaps you weren't aware of this, but thank you for trying to help. Aside from that, the prices are... out of the range of lower income family's budgets. The toxic ingestion will continue till people stand up, "put their foot down" & demand the responsible manufacturing/ end use of these chemicals by big corporations which apparently our government, who we pay to regulate these things & protect us, is not doing.

      I wish she would have gone into more detail on safe cookware. From a hobby chef and not toxicologist, stainless steel is the best for non-reactivity, especially if it is sealed. If you have the money for it, Hestan Nano-bond is the best since it is a titanium coating. That said, it costs a fortune, and not many people will be able to afford it.
      For non-stick, I agree that teflon pans are awful. Cast iron and carbon steel are the way to go here. Yes, building up the seasoning takes time, but if you do it right, it will last lifetimes. Ceramic coating really isn't great at being nonstick, and it doesn't have a great lifespan, especially for serious cooking.
      I wish she would have talked more about coated cast iron and stoneware. Those are typically solid pieces (depending on the brand) and can last forever.

      @@mikethebloodthirsty Sprays to water proof boots are a major source of PFAS as well. Outdoorsy people can test with elevated PFAS levels for that reason. One could use high quality masks (not the ones like we used during the pandemice, but the ones that would be needed for some paint jobs). And it is possible that one can use these masks only ONE time, depends on what happens to the pores. The warnings on the spray bottles were always to only use them outside and not when it is windy.
      I am not sure if there is any method to water proof boots or garments (which does not alter the optics). I read a thread of someone that had a mixture for boots for whitewater rafting. He wrote that even quality boots will not hold up for long (the rocks, the gravel, the water, they get a lot of mechanical damage). So he buys low to medium price boots applies his mixture and they hold up better than any expensive boot (which is still not long, I guess 2 seasons max.)
      And it was something brushed on I think, and I do not think it contained PFAS. Maybe silicone based ?

    Another issue with Teflon/PTFE cookware is the when it wears out, it cannot be recycled. Smelting PTFE coated metal releases dioxins (extreme birth defects) which is not permitted so these all go to landfill. And when the manufacturers say ‘long lasting’ what they mean is that it won’t last. And if you overheat just once to fat smoking point, the PTFE is damaged and the pan is no longer nonstick and the guarantee void.

    • @OurFreeSociety

      As there have been restrictions of PFAS recently NOW the companies have to apply for excemptions. NOW it comes out where PfAS are used (pizza carton linings, cosmetics !, likely also for baking paper. And dental floss - really ?. It is like detecting that they put sugar into any industrially processed foods, even sour / hot / savoury food. One expects PFAS in nonstick cookware, and knowledgeable people know they are in proofed tableware (tableclothes that have stain / water protection. Maybe also for the cushions of outdoor furniture).
      If one uses spray to waterproof shoes and boots - that is also a major source to absorb PFAS. I saw a video about PFAS *. The journalist got her blood checked and she expected to have below average load. Nope: She was well above average. She then remembered that she was very active outdoors some years ago and used a lot of spray to water proof her boots.
      * Faroer Islanders have problems too. They have the folclore tradition of slaughtering pilote whales when they show up (there is a season for that - and animal activists have protested against that unnecessary blood bath for the longest time). Turns out that massacre - not necessary these days for survival - got the folks from the islands into trouble. These remote islands off the coast of Scotland do not have so much input of any pollution by air - but as the PFAS concentrate in the food chain in the oceans and pilote whales eat fish, squid etc. .... - the chemicals are concentrated in them (and likely other toxins than PFAS as well).
      There is a strong folclore tradition behind it - the people used to be poor, so back in the day the pilote whales where a godsend to have enough food and especially to have enough fat. (food and for burning it for light, maybe even for heating).
      For the same reason one should abstain from eating Tuna (also a predatory fish).

      Some of the nasty side effects of modern day conveniences. Nonstick is popular because people don’t want to put any effort into scrubbing posts and pans. People feel it’s better to cook with nonstick pans and wash them in the dishwasher using toxic dishwashing detergent. One day scientists will overcome their Frankenstein creations, hopefully there will be more than a handful of humans left on earth to see it. t

    Hello, I am a registered dietitian and diabetes educator. I have been making these arguments for a long time and am happy to find your channel and have subscribed. I have a question regarding aluminum cookware. I know that many years ago that data suggested links between it and Alzheimer's disease, but, I thought that had been shown not to be so on the basis that the aluminum found in autopsied brains was now thought to have accumulated as a result of plaque formation, rather that as a cause of plaque formation. Can you give me the sources for your information on this.
    Also, I haven't watched the rest of your videos yet, but, I think it is very important to get people to stop microwaving anything in plastic containers. Have you done a report on this?
    Also, is there anyone testing soil or offering soil test kits for plastics and PFAC's? I buy organic soil but it does come in plastic bags. My child developed ulcerative colitis and I am doing everything I can to make her diet as safe as possible.
    Thanks for your work.

    • @randyespoda1603
      @randyespoda1603 8 месяцев назад

      It isn't. it uses microwaves on unnatural frequencies (they amp up the frequency of the waves without decreasing the amplitude). Long term, it is also extremely bad as it is highly unnatural. ANYTHING unnatural (as in artificially produced or induced) is inherently bad for a natural being. It is THAT simple of a truth but no one seems to get it. Haven't used a microwave for almost ten years now. Ppl need to STOP ALL artificial produces in order to return to natural balance. It is the only way but as long as those same ppl keep lusting for money, profit and power over others, you and I and every other human being is EFFED! Worst thing? Those contributing to this madness are even cursing and damning their own kin! For money!! They really are that blinded by wealth and profit!

    Great info, exactly what I wanted to know about PFAS and PFOS, but especially your mention of PTFE as i could not find much info on it after i bought a wok sized pan that had a PTFE labeling and not PFAS or PFOS.
    I also wonder about these pans that have white-ish or copper color and not the usual plain black interior.
    I also noticed that these teflon pans should not be heated with extreme heat but if you do, you will smell a peculiar odor -- toxin/toxic, not good.

      I think the Teflon producers made some adjustments that supposedly made the non-stick chemicals non-toxic. Also, there was news about Teflon only being dangerous if heated to very high levels. That was the spin. I don't know if the later versions of Teflon are really any less toxic.

    Good video though there is a small gap.
    a) critical temperature to stay below
    b) critical ph and how to raise that pH , hint it requires pH buffers which are sugar and salt.
    c) the combination of pH and temperature.
    d) if temperature is a key part then slow cookers with an appropriate surface would be another option.
    What other pH buffers are there excluding sugar and salt? The food needs to be as close to pH 7 as possible especially for aluminium as it is 'amphoteric' ie it reacts with both acids and alkalis.
    I am thinking boiling would be better ie soups without browning any ingredients possibly with greens or starchy food such as grains.
    Eating from raw where it is safe to do so is a good option but also moving away from a disposable consumer culture and processed foods.
    By the time you remove all those disposables, ready meals and unnecessary detergents etc a safer product becomes more affordable.

      Is air fryers bad?

    • @justinw1765
      @justinw1765 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@etg9080 No. They cook more efficiently and evenly than other baking methods. I have one that is stainless steel and glass. It's fine. They are just ultra convection bakers. They have a strong fan that blows around a lot of air, that's all. The convection/movement of the air heats things up more quickly and evenly, as air (especially still air) is not a particularly good cooking medium because it is quite non conductive (still air is a great insulator, which is how goose down works so well, as it is great at trapping/stilling lots of air).
      This is why boiling, steaming, and pan cooking will cook things faster than baking. A lot of the baking that happens with ovens, bakers, etc is actually through the radiant heat. This is the part of the energy transfer that acts like light and doesn't need any other medium (like water, air, metal, etc) to move through. Radiant heat is how the Sun warms the Earth, since that heat energy light is moving through space, which is a vacuum with no air, etc.
      But moving the air around a lot, helps this fluid (the air) to impart more thermal energy to the colder, denser material (the food) also.
      Pressure cookers though are the most energy efficient way to cook.

    Well, that some nice bunch of BS. Even in cited paper it is stated, that... well, there is no certainty about toxicity:
    "In short, it can be concluded that more comprehensive and systematic studies on the possible environmental and health risks of PTFE and related gases under high-temperature conditions must be performed. Both in vitro and in vivo assays should be considered. If data indicates that safety concerns exist about the use of PTFE coatings in cookware, national and international environment protection agencies should declare their clear stance on this subject. If such safety issues are there, a criterion should be developed to state that in which applications use of PTFE is safe. This all needs to be done on an urgent basis to access the potential health risks related to PTFE and associated chemicals".
    Moreover, you are exposed for PFOA in much higher doses from other daily-used products. And let's not forget that much more dangerous substances are present when we fry food on pans with fat.
    You mix papers about PFOA in general with statements about pans, what is just misleading.

If you take good care of them, you can past them down to your kids, then their kids to their kids, etc. Sure, there might be some iron that leaches out with high acidity foods, but it can be good for people with iron deficiencies. I've cooked frozen potstickers/gyoza on these things, it's that good, especially when well seasoned.

      I saw a video about PFAS, the journalist assumed that she would be below average PFAS load, and had it checked. Turns out she is above average. She then remembered that she used to spray her boots a lot a few years ago when she was very active outdoors. The water repellent stuff. The bottles have the warnings on them: only to use them outdoors, only to use them if it is not windy. A good mask would be in order (one like painters have them).

    • @franziskani
      @franziskani 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@dryvonneburkart At the Faroer islands (remote islands off the coast of Scotland) they have high PFAS loads. These islands have much less pollution. But in the past they had the tradition of slaughtering pilot whales (those eat fish and squid). Back in the day that was necessary for survival on these isolated, poor islands. They continued doing it when the gruesome hunt was not necessary anymore and ignored the protests of animal activists, 'cause tradition / folclore. Well, that did not end well for them. Unfortunately the children there have unusually high levels.
      I guess another reason might be the use of spray to waterproof jackets and boots - fishery is one of the few professions there. And wool / sheep plus a bit or tourism.

    I use the Instant Pot Duo Crisp Air Fryer that incorporates both air fryer and instant pot. It is PFAS -free. The cons are that your food might stick, and it's a smaller basket than dedicated air fryers, but for 1-2 people or occasional air frying I would highly recommend. After 2 years, I still use mine often, both the air fryer and instant pot, and having multiple uses in one appliance saves counter space.
    However, the inner fryer basket does have a ceramic coating which, as the video explains, could still be problematic if it gets scratched.
