    I had a horrible day today. A depressive episode caught up to me and I shut down at school, and I haven’t been feeling well since. This sounds cheesy and fake I know, but knowing that a video was scheduled for today kind of pushed me to stay up and moving? While waiting for this I finished some work I’ve been procrastinating on and I’m really thankful for that. Again this probably sounds fake, but your content helps more than you know

    another absolute banger! really love that you’re not afraid to get serious in your videos, and huge props to you for not avoiding the genuinely scary consequences of this type of religious propaganda. i was born and raised in a super religious and conservative area and the effect this kind of stuff has on kids/teens/young adults is so often swept under the rug. i’ve seen so many of my former friends and peers fall into these extreme mindsets about sin and righteousness and it breaks my heart, because as angry as it makes me, i can’t bring myself to hate them. i feel sad for them. and not /because/ they’re religious (because there are plenty of religious people who don’t suck!), but because people have used religion as an excuse to manipulate them.

    • @ayoitsmellow
      @ayoitsmellow 3 года назад +9

      Yep, it’s overlooked far too often.
      My parents are scarily religious and it’s really taken a toll on my mental health because, since I’m under their roof, I have to believe in the same things they do. For years, I actually did. They had me believing I could heal people and raise the dead, and simply pray mental illnesses away. Insane shit.
      Fortunately, I finally realized just how crazy and damaging it really is. It’s hard to fake it around them now but ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get through it yk.
      If I didn’t fake it, they’d have me exorcised for sure, just like they tried doing with my sibling 🕳🧑‍🦯

    • @dudeman5303
      @dudeman5303 3 года назад +5

      Yeah I 100% agree with this. I was brought up in an extremely conservative/religious household and wasn't exposed to anything other than far right politics and then a few people who were standard ignorant bill Clinton stans, that was the political compass to me and I understood the problems with Clinton but there weren't right wing political figures I was really aware of. It was always "both parties suck but the Republicans are closer to our ideals" kind of stuff, but my fam was farther right than Republicans. I had *no clue* how bad it was until a few years after moving left around 2016, my parents are pretty nuts I came to find. It was so difficult for me to get out of that mindset, I still have so many problems I have to work through whether it be just or some subconscious racism or sexism, and also the negative things they instill into us ourselves regarding our own personality - being unable to express ourselves emotionally or feeling extreme guilt/shame over our own sexuality, it has had some serious long lasting effects and I've been a leftist for 5 years now. It's insane. Not to mention that when I realized how bad right wing politics was - i didn't know anyone that was really left wing at the time so I literally had to close myself off from my entire social group/family basically to prevent them from pulling me back into it. It was so difficult but I knew I was doing the right thing so I kept with it, the only reason I think I was able to do it was because I had recently gotten my first wireless touchscreen device (I'm a boomer, not like literally - I'm a millennial - but I used flip phones for years until I was given an ipod touch around 2015) and I was able to learn and expand in isolation despite not having a friend group I could find and congregate with about it. I honestly can't believe I got out of it now looking back.
      Edit: just for the record, I kind of got side tracked - I meant to talk more about my religious upbringing but I got sidetracked, I became an atheist/agnostic around 2012 or so, but my family literally doesn't even know because my dad would disown me straight up. Or at the least he'd never stop bringing religion up to me, and he's a very aggressive person. I hadn't been able to talk to him for a long time because of his anger issues and his politics, but I just recently started seeing my parents a tiny bit again, and if they'd known I was an atheist holy crap.

      @@jupiterzombies wow that is wild that they did that. It's nice to know the preacher ended up not being too crazy but wow imagine how bad that could've been? Cuz there is bound to be some preachers who will really be messed up about it and use lots of guilt and manipulation tactics. You kind of lucked out a bit with that one lol. My parents weren't approachable in the slightest on those things so to this day they have no clue I am an agnostic/atheist. (I tend to use them interchangeably, mostly I use agnostic when I'm talking to someone who's religious but I think it's a bit redundant because i feel anyone who is scientifically minded is going to always say we *can't know* the real answer.)
      Man, if I would've told my dad I was questioning religion back in the day - oh my god I would've gotten the belt I can say that for sure. When I hear a story like yours it just blows my mind because it comes off like usually you could talk to your parents about other things, with mine I learned very early on I couldn't talk to them about anything serious because they just were crazy. To be fair, I had terrible anxiety and depression so part of that could've been me projecting, but I never felt comfortable talking to my parents about anything like that. The only time I remember doing so was when I was in kindergarten or so and I realized what death really was, I remember crying about it to my mom because I realized she would die at some point and it was very intense. I remember her comforting me by saying we will all end up in heaven, and I kept asking her "mom how do you know that though?" And she just kept telling me "because I believe". It was probably one of the most emotionally intense moments I'd had at that point, it's kind of hard to put into words because as a kid those kinds of things feel truly catastrophic. But honestly at that point I think the skepticism was already there for me, and I forgot about the whole ordeal until a few years ago but yeah I remember being pretty devastated by it. I never talked about any of it to my parents again though.
      What is really sad to me about your story is it sounds like you felt comfortable bringing it up with your parents and like they betrayed that trust rather than talk to you about it, that seems just really sad to me because as a kid that kind of thing is really eye opening and it's not like you can erase that kind of experience, I just wonder how they perceive the situation in hindsight.

    So funny story, when I was 18 I naively joined a fundamentalist Christian cult. We went to Thailand to do “”outreach””, and one of the tracks we handed out was the first one, but it was written in Thai. The Thai version was super fucked up. One of the panels was straight up a drawing of the dead guy watching porn and a number of other panels were unnecessarily graphic as well. After I left the cult, I stumbled across the English version of the tract and was kind of excited to actually see what it says. But when I flipped through it, I realized how different it was from the Thai one. Super weird, and to this day I have no reason why the Thai one was way more intense than the English one

The fast-paced dry wit and mile a minute hilarious descriptions had me rolling! I can't wait to see what you cover next. If you keep covering exvangelical or cult topics, I will be extra excited!

    some of the chick comics were familiar from like memes…until i realized i have a chick comic pamphlet pinned to my wall because of how fucking absurd it is and the blatant white supremacist notes and anti semitism as well as general bigotry, i found it on a bench at a farmers market randomly, and as someone who grapples heavily with religious and christian shit from growing up, the part towards the end talking about how you feel for people whove been indoctrinated and the fear they felt legitimately made me almost cry, good content 👍🏻

      (I still can't decide what to refer to them as)....I am trying Not to be gender offensive.. but honestly it is hard for me to tell....
      why is it being a religious extremist to disagree or disapprove with someone spreading malicious lies.. about something...?

    I really appreciate this video. I grew up with reactionary Christianity, and holding fast to its impossible standards almost killed me. Even at its worst, though, I had comfort in Christ. For so long, I was surrounded by people telling me I was damned because of who I am.
    I denied who I was because it was easier than abandoning the only support network I had. The same people who guilted me for being bi, who demanded I be masculine in a way that I hated were my sense of security.
    It took me a long time to realize I could take Christ's comfort and leave the bigotry I'd been fed. There is a huge threat of radicalization through evangelism. I was literally taught to take advantage of people when they were desperate to convert them. I'm still realizing the horrible shit they taught me. They know how to exploit desperate people, and we need more arms reaching out.
    As a Christian, I don't want Chick Tracts to be what convinces people to come to Christ. Thank you for taking that asshole to task.

Second of all, and most importantly, it is SO refreshing to see content from a creator who trusts that their audience is able to understand and keep up with fast-paced and intelligent humor. It seems so many creators nowadays are almost spoon-feeding their viewers simple jokes and offering up the explanation of said jokes in a way that feels so patronizing. It's almost like they think we couldn't possibly keep up with what they see as their creative genius or something. You truly speak to your audience as equals and trust us to be able to understand your witty responses and creative/extensive language in a way I have only ever seen from maybe 3 other creators before. Holy shit, I think I found a Chick Tract when I was ~13. It was on the subway, tucked into one of those metal frames that advertisements go in. It was a classic "This woman died, you won't believe what happened next!" one, I read it and accepted it as a Deranged Little Pamphlet and left it there. It was thoroughly amusing. I wonder if someone left it for other people to find and be ~turned towards Christ~ or if they were just like "I was given this wild comic and must get rid of it somehow". Watching this video was certainly enlightening, I think I'm going to become a sodomite now.
    (Also I scrolled through the Chick Tract catalogue, some of them are definitely pretty fucked...peruse with caution.)

    I didn't even know what Chick tracts are, not being from an English-speaking country, but I know we have our own BS in my country so I'm not gonna be all high and righteous over the US.
    (cw: references to bigotry and related violence)
    But it does remind me of the first time I went to a Pride parade, when I was 16 and only beginning to understand how I was different and why that meant my parents were telling me I was sick. I was alone, because no one in my family would have wanted to go with me even if I asked, and the first thing that hit me was how many lovely people just asked if I wanted to march with them, if I wanted a pin or a temporary tattoo with some cool symbols and flags I didn't know anything about. And when the march started, barely fifty metres into the beginning of the parade, as I was talking with the group who had kindly taken me in (I guess it's true what they say about the community choosing their own family), we walked by three people in front of a pamphlet kart.
    They handed me one and I instinctively took it to look at it. Plastered on the front, in lovely colours, was the sentence: "Gay mariage is the West' suicide". That sentence has stuck with me ever since, into adulthood and the confirmation that I would never be fully accepted. So on that day, I looked at my new group of friends, which included a gay couple who carried their kids on their shoulders, and we turned back to the pamphlet people and just asked for them so we could distribute them ourselves. There was enough of us, with the attention it drew from other people in the march, that we cleared the kart and were able to dump all of it in the trash on the next street. But it sticks with you.
    I was a 16 yo kid who knew they'd never be accepted by their family and took the trip to the parade anyway, and now I'm an adult who became an activist in part because of the psychological damage that pamphlet and all the rhetoric that comes with it did to me. When I left that parade at the end of the day, holding hands with a crush-at-first-sight I had met on the march, I had my first flag around my shoulders and that was enough for a middle-aged man who passed us by to think to himself: "oh, two teenagers, how could would it be if I assaulted them?" and spit in the face of my friend before dragging me by the hair up to a wall and yelling at me.
    How can you not be taught what life will be for you by experiences like these? So it disgusts me to see that kind of abhorent stuff in tracts distributed in front of your schools, but it doesnt susprise me. And I guess that's maybe the worst part of it all.
