    Tim was pretty quick to realise the aileron problem, correct for it and land that fairly gently, especially considering he had so little height or speed to work with. Great job saving that one Tim.

    I'm glad you're not around when I fly. Left a shoe in a swamp a couple of weeks back. I guess I'm safe, I hear you live on the bum of the planet. I live in the armpit. Still raining like spring here, but I did get out to fly a couple times.
    Tim keep up the good work, those who stay on the ground may never feel the sting of a loss, nor the joy of a successful flight. A little aileron reversal now and again is just the chance you take. Do the high five next time!
    Good show Tokora! You really should take up a collection and fix that tower - maybe the town fathers..... Never mind.

    • @xjet
      @xjet  5 лет назад +1

      Ha... we've offered to fix the tower on a number of occasions -- but apparently it would be considered an act of vandalism if we restored it to its former glory. What's more, the town council took away the steel ladders that provide access -- and promptly lost them. Hundreds of dollars in scrap value and thousands of dollars to have replacements made -- yet they told us off for allegedly endangering this "valuable public asset" -- the same "valuable public asset" they're letting rot away and disappear through their negligence, bit by bit. Crazy people!

    JDM... you offer pearls of wisdom. That is about the best set of instructions for tuning glo engines since Clarence's Engine Handbook. I'm sorry that our hobby is plagued by people that slam others and won't take advice about engine tuning. It was clear you tried to help. You guys should reexamine how he was treated and he didn't start the name calling. It is correct those models are set too lean and a richer mix would improve the operation of those engines. One click rich from the lean peak as was stated by someone other than JDM is wrong on so many levels. A glow engine really does lean out as it gains airspeed and by a lot more than one click. One click leaves it way too lean but it will still taxi and then die right after take off. The model in the video likely died on takeoff due to tuning but the taxi fails may be a fuel delivery problem and that might have been an issue during the very erratic takeoff. JDM gave good info about clunk installations too. It's clear to me JDM understands these engines far beyond what he was given credit for here. I must also say examine the safety at your field. Sparks near fuel and laughter? A starter slammed into and past the prop and laughter? A chipped prop that should have been removed and destroyed? You need to notice how many comments to this video were about safety. The hobby is under scrutiny and it's a bad time operate carelessly.

    • @xjet
      @xjet  5 лет назад +1

      I love the advice from people who weren't even there at the time. All that dangerous stuff -- and yet, oddly enough, we're all far more likely to be injured or killed on the roads by some idiot driver on the way home -- yet we seldom give that a second thought. You're also far more likely to be killed in or by an indiot in a manned aircraft. Risk is a part of life and there is no way to eliminate it, all you can do is reduce it to a tollerable level -- which is what we do. At the gokart and dirt-bike tracks that adjoin our airfield you'll see ambulances rolling up from time to time and carting away people with broken bones, concussions and such. We've never had to call an ambulance as a result of our model-flying activities. Acceptable level of risk? Well if our's is unacceptable then I strongly suggest you contact the neighbouring clubs and berate them for all the injuries they sustain in the pursuit of their pleasure -- but me, I'll respect their right to set their own risk-tollerance levels.

    • @rcpatternlovergloforever9972
      @rcpatternlovergloforever9972 5 лет назад +2

      Another long winded justification for error. Thanks to video we were there close enough that many saw danger and I saw an engine setup so wrong the plane can't even taxi. And Why won't't you even try a richer tune? Are you that worried about being wrong.

    • @xjet
      @xjet  5 лет назад +1

      @@rcpatternlovergloforever9972 Tim's engine never stopped for any reason other than he hasn't set up the throw on his throttle servo properly so when he flips his throttle switch (LOL) to idle, the motor stops -- carby barrel fully closed. That the model has sustained vertical capabilities with no loss in engine RPM is a clear indication that the engine is not "too lean" and it never stopped unexpectedly. The fact that he had to wind in the needle after the first flight (when the engine wasn't running very well) indicates that it was actually a little too rich at the start. Why would he want to run the engine richer -- so that it was not as smooth nor as powerful -- when it was tuned "just right"? Simply because JDM couldn't see a smoke trail? LOL. This is a fixed-wing RC plane, not a helicopter!

    • @rcpatternlovergloforever9972
      @rcpatternlovergloforever9972 5 лет назад +1

      Read JDM's comments. He did not say it was lean because no smoke trail. He argued against a smoke trail being a good indicator. I kinda disagree and believe the missing smoke trail and your "1 click rich from the lean peak" method are proof you guys have it set too lean. However, since you can't possibly be wrong there is no need to test it because you are always right. Try JDMs method and if it works you don't have to tell anyone. Write a long msg filled with technical jargon and acronyms about it being your idea all along.

    Please please please richen your motors. They are way way way to lean. Richer is more reliable, runs cooler, and engines last 100 times longer than the engines on these two will last. PLEASE REMEMBER A MODEL ENGINE LEANS OUT WHEN IT GOES AIRBORNE. Start it and point it nose up, if it slows down or stops you are too lean. Richen it and ideally when you point it up it will speed up slightly. Pointing a model straight up is to simulate what happens when it goes airborne--it leans out. With fuel tank much lower than engine when model is pointed up the engine leans out similar to take off. Over lean gives high rpm on ground but way less power and zero reliability when airborne. So many people think max rpm on ground is best but it means lean peak on ground and over lean im the air. Hope this helps.

    • @Testpilottim
      @Testpilottim 5 лет назад +1

      we are going to tunnel ram one of the engines so if it isn't already running lean it fuxking well will be in a dive tunnel rammed lol

    • @Johnn_T
      @Johnn_T 5 лет назад +1

      JDMStage4Roush we were all a bit concerned at tokoroa about how Tim treats his motors, so we have a program now in place where each one is weighed before and after each flight (in case they are running lean) and I can assure you his motors are not leaning out as they weigh the same after he's flown them as they do before he starts lol...,..no seriously though his motors are FAR from lean-Bruce's camera doesn't do a very good job of showing the oil smoke trail unless the engine is running really really rich, or the lighting on the day is a particular way. If you notice in this video when Bruce is filming Tim near the sun, you can clearly see the shadow of the smoke trail. @Xjet usually premixes the fuel the nitro boys run and Ron usually does all Tim's engine Tuning hence we lovingly call Ron "Dad" (cause he's always sorting Tim's models and radio out lol).

    • @STG3Stang
      @STG3Stang 5 лет назад +3

      @@Johnn_T they are too lean. When you hear the scream you hear in the video they are too lean. I have taught at least 20 people how to fix exactly what his engines are doing. If you like dead stick flights and landings then refuse to listen. I have also had about 100 guys refuse to listen. Men are almost impossible to teach about engines. Some do listen and learn. Women listen, say thank you, and you never see them dead stick again. Then she tried to teach and got shut down fast! There is no question at all those in the video were too lean. 1) died right after pointed up 2) died right after take off. 3) died as soon as tank was drawn down a little. 4) you can hear that lean scream that comes near the lean peak from both engines. I guarantee his tuning method is to set max rpm. People think that means max power but ask any dragster mechanic... horsepower comes from slightly rich as does a lot of cooling. Lastly a lean 2-stroke glow engine will smoke because its burning ~20% oil. Modern synthetic oils will not burn up completely even in an over lean seriously hot engine. Smoke is not a good indicator anymore but that scream makes it undeniable. Try a 3 or 4 clicks richer (open needle vale) and see if it doesn't fly better. If you like to set max rpm do it on a near empty tank but in the air it will lean out. So you will still be too lean. I feel for the guy and i know I could help but trust is hard to earn.

    • @xjet
      @xjet  5 лет назад +2

      There is no point in richening an engine to the point where it begins four-stroking and Tims engines are tuned fine (except the first flight with the low-winger which was actually a little rich). The amount of "smoke" also depends on the type of oil you're using. If you're using a cheap fully-synthetic PAG-based oil (like Coolpower blue) then you will get lots of smoke (partly because you need to run so damned much of it) but if you're using a more advanced oil (like Aerosynth/Aerosave) at lower ratios (about 10-12%) then there's almost no smoke at all. I've got a couple of Thunder Tiger 46 Pro engines here with over 200 hours on them and they're still very strong motors with clean bores and good compression. The secret is one click rich of peak and a high quality oil.
      More engines are killed due to the lack of good anti-corrosion packages associated with the cheaper oils which tend to allow the acidic combustion byproducts and hygroscopic nature of methanol to promote rust on the crankshaft and bearings when laid up over winter. When people take these rusty engines and run them in the spring that rust creates a great grinding paste in the bore and on the bearings.
