I fully share your doubts about the electric car. I live in Italy and have been driving Toyota hybrids for 15 years. Now I drive a Lexus Ux Hybrid. Each new model is an improvement in the hybrid system, lower consumption, less use of the internal combustion engine and consequently more kilometers with electric. No worries about charging, I go where I want, I eat where I decide and not in the restaurant near the supercharger decided by the car. Seriousness, reliability and an efficient dealer network. Never a problem. At Toyota/Lexus they are not stupid.
It has an I.C.E. . what else would you expect?
They are now efficient enough. Your choice shows mpg is not that important to you.
I expect that with improvements in the battery and hybrid system, ICE will become less and less of a priority, but will guarantee me autonomy from charging stations. Simple.@@MrChriss000
This is the classic comment from Tesla fans. Not only consumption affects the cost and expenses of a car. In Italy electricity costs a lot, the same electric Lexus costs 15,000 euros more. When will I reach the break-even point? When I want to resell it there is no market. Then there are all the charging issues. I repeat, Toyota/Lexus are gradually increasing electric mobility, improving the hybrid system year after year. In a few years they will put solid state batteries on hybrid Lexus, increasing autonomy and further improving consumption. This for me is the solution.@@MrChriss000
I beginning to respect Toyota for not jumping on the bandwagon and continuing sticking with hybrids which makes sense not to make fully electric vehicles.They something that other manufacturers don't know.if fully charged engines were the shit.
Toyota would have capitalized on it already.They started electric vehicles first as hybrids.Tjey realize the short comings of fully charged vehicles
Ice engines still 50-60 efficient, it hasn’t changed much, hybrid system makes up for that. You got to deal with batteries and ice engine with hybrids. I made a full switch after trying plug in hybrid, once battery tech gets better we will see 5min recharge, we are at 15min 170mi right now with superchargers. Gas station takes what 5min on an average. Once you try EV, never go back to 4 bangers eco engines, instant torque, no vibrations or horrible cvt noises.

Hybrids, preferably Toyota make the most sense. Excellent mpg's, all electric for in town trips. No range anxiety.

I bought a used Tesla, model 3 with performance motor, switched from modded f30 bmw 335i. I couldn’t be happier. Model 3s are know to go 200-300k miles on original batteries. Brakes last the life of the car, plaid is exception, it needs track pack to handle 1000hp. Model 3 dual motor is 4000lbs not much heavier than bmw m340i xdrive which is about 3900lbs, you can also get regular tires you may lose efficiency. For daily driver and fun car for around 25-35k used, 0-60 3.1, model 3 P is hard to beat. Model s imo is too big, for me. It’s not only oil change that saves you, I saved thousands in fuel, no brake jobs unless you track it, no belts, spark plugs. I spend $25k on my used model 3 , plus gov incentives. Try a used Tesla before buying a new one, long range and performance models have 8 year / 120k miles warranty on battery and motor.

they are disposable cars ,, I rode in a Tesla the thing rides like a golf cart rough and so much road noise ,, sitting at a charger half your life ,,, insanity ,, I drive 200 to 300 miles a day at 70 plus MPH .. WTF would I do with an EV ,, I get over 500 mile range in my ICE cruising 80 plus with 200,000 plus miles and still like new , $25 for 90 miles at a charging station ,, hahahaha gagagagagaga
@@bengordon7635 my model 3 cost be $25 charge full at superheater to go 300mi, at home it’s $15. For me it works because I rarely have to go to a supercharger, because I drive 20-30mi a day. When we do road trips we stop every 3hrs and charge for 15m(170mi), good time to stretch or do lunch. You actually spend a lot less time charging because it charges every night when you sleep, for most case use.
the battery degrades just sitting ,, all that is great but a car is an Investment ,, EV's ,lose their value way to fast because a used ev no way to tell if the car has been abused ,,, Disposible cars ,, if you can afford to lose 40k in one year because ELon needs cash dropping prices so low your old car is obsolete ,,
Lithium batteries are very dangerous if you have a thermal runaway .. you and your family could burn to death in the car if it explodes 5000 degrees vs 1000 degrees ICE ,,, ,, the gas coming out could kill you if it happens in your garage ,,, I fly drones and pushing these batteries i have had a bunch explode ,, incredible flames and frie just from a lil drone battery ,, I would never put my family in that danger ,,
I live in norway, and we also have arctic climate in northen parts of the country. To be honest, it is VERY rare to have starting issues on ICE engines. I've owned lots of differnet cars, and i can remember to have run into issues two, maybe three times because of drained battery. Never had any issues with the engines themselves. I've even started a honda diesel car in nearly -40 celcius without any issues. Well maintained diesel and gasoline engines works fine in the winter months, just make sure you top up the fuel tank often to avoid condensation, and have the car serviced before the cold weather sets in.

Toyota's thinking is genius. They are smart enough to learn to perfect their future cars before releasing them.
Unlike the big 3, all they do is follow fads.

Excellent. Absolutely agree with you with all you say. Few month ago I had an idea and started thinking about EV, well, no. Same reasons, same difficulties and my wallet isn't that fat to cover all bills and service fees. No, I keep my petrol Toyota Avensis, Peugeot 807, both reliable (I am in Europe/Prague) and I leave all EVs to other people. Again, very good talk today. 👍

I think that he is talking about the fact that in cold weather electrics cars sucks. And when is long route is problematic. I drove from Miami to San Francisco and I was fine with my ice car but in an electric that would be problematic, I don’t want to adjust my itinerary I want something to replace the ice like that or better.
I’ve had M cars and such over the years but now own a Model Y.

My brother lives in Phoenix, he bought a Model Y dual motor in 2023. I live in Rio Rancho, NM, I bought a 2023 Toyota Venza Limited, (Hybrid). Very different cars. I'm 63 years old, my brother just turned 75. We paid about the same price, as he got the $7,500 tax rebate. If you drive any car very fast, it will cost more. I know if I had a car that was very fast, I would drive it that way at least occasionally. I like the luxury of the Venza. The Tesla has the touch screen, and hard plastic everywhere. Both cars drive similar as far as driver input. My car has adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and automatic breaking. His car won't automatically break, unless you buy full self driving. I have a heads up display. He gets 3¢/kilowatt hour off peak. His car is ready to drive every morning from home. My car will go 500 to 600 miles after stopping off to buy 14.5 gallons of regular gasoline currently available at $2.96 per gallon in my area. I can fill my tank in 1:35, which I do about once every 2 to 3 weeks. Road trips have higher costs in the Tesla compared to home charging, but not that much. My battery currently costs about $3,200 installed. His battery replacement will mean the end of life for his car, unless technology solves this issue. Both of our cars will likely outlast both of us. I still own a 1997 GMC Safari van that is practical for hauling ladders/tools, used motor oil, etc. I doubt if his Tesla will still be running in 27 years, only time will tell. My brother and I both love our cars. I'm sure between the two of us, we could tell you the pros and cons of both vehicle types. One thing to consider, if you like technology, the Tesla offers over the air updates, so tech obsolescence is delayed with the Tesla.

@@ECPP Yes, and recently they've added diarrhea to the fart sounds that can be played from any seat position. I was thinking that someone should make an aftermarket accessory to add that feature to any other car? I'm sure Mercedes owners would like to have that? It could connect to each seat using Bluetooth.

The Lexus TX is.a beautiful SUV so sounds like you made a great move on that one.
This is an excellent topic, and I think about these types of dilemmas often. I buy and own a lot of vehicles and enjoy each one for different reasons.

I bought a model Y performance a year and a half ago it’s my favorite car. it’s far from perfect but the acceleration and how smart it is and safe. It is just amazing.

What a great video! I’ve watch you here and there over the past couple years but now after this video I’m a huge fan now!
This video could’ve been a bit more realistic and simple. EVs are not for everyone. If you live in a congested city, have decent temperatures year round, you don’t take 1000 mile trips and have your own charger at home, it is the best type of vehicle to own. You will save thousands on gas and have a rocket ship, however that is a pretty big checklist. If you can’t tick those boxes off, you’re better off with hybrid. Range anxiety is old news unless you’re travelling across country. Most EVs have over 250 miles of range. Within city, that’ll last you a week. Why do we always have to compare EVs with long distance driving? They’re made for city and they serve amazingly in city but for some reason everyone loves to compare them in situations that they’re not designed for. It’s like getting a gas truck and then saying, oh it’s not fuel efficient in grid locks so it means that trucks suck!! Gotta love it when people feel the need to convince themselves that what they have is better but in reality there isn’t better or worse. They both serve their purposes so it all depends on your needs
Its really not for everyone, but I also think this mandate by the greenavistas is simply, WRONG! Choice is best but as we see in this society, it is becoming an all for one and one for all state.

Mandating people to buy technology that’s expensive and doesn’t work in a lot of places or a lot of circumstances there’s nothing short from criminal, especially that they’re using climate change as an excuse and only act the globalist will actually believe it. We should have a choice and pushing Evie’s on everyone should not be an option.
When it comes to making the choice to get an EV, it’s easy. Either you get one and enjoy it, or if it’s not for you , you keep your gas vehicle or vehicles. You even have the choice of having one EV in stable for going to work and running errands, and you save your gas vehicles for fun and longer trips. It’s up to you and your needs and wants. As a 3 year Model 3 owner who also has a 2014 Acura , it’s a no brainer for me , I love it, the most fun car I’ve ever had, and I don’t have to go a gas station or a charging station, when I wake up every morning I have an 80 percent charge. Don’t get one if it’s not for you , there’s no point in going back and forth.

I agree, I'm a tesla fanatic but I love to go hiking and walking on trails up Banff or do long road trips with families, in the end the EV lack of flexibility would probably pu my family in risk, good for probably spirit driving but, during those seasons of salt on the road how much power can I put down safely, Lotta money for it to be a garage princess car in regards to a plaid model

Oh Mark, I'm having the same dialog with myself about Tesla! They are expensive to buy, expensive to repair, complicated to drive on long trip (duo to the charging situation), and after 8 years they are mostly done! It's a tough deal but i also decided not to hop in now... A Toyota hybrid is the way to go (if we can find one 😂)

Totally agree, I like long drives with these gem cars, but I experienced range anxiety with an EV going to Arizona with my son on a hot 118F Arizona afternoon, my range got zapped, great point on hybrids
@@livelong6685 I had a serious situation before Christmas. Son transported to hospital in Austria. Hurry up to Austria. Jumped in my diesel car and drove down to Austria. Decision made in 10 minutes no problem to get diesel on the way there. 6 hrs trip. Would EV allow me to do so? No way. I needed to drive nonstop to be there as soon as possible.
@josefhab8095 totally agree I couldn't imagine an emergency in my house hold where I needed to get to the hospital and relying on ev charge, I guess it's just having the peace of mind

I enjoy the fact that my EV can launch better than 99% of loud cars. It’s the feel of being thrown to the back of the seat plus instant acceleration in comparison to laggy gas cars. I don’t get this whole idea of it being boring. I’ve had mine for 6 months and I’m having so much fun that I never had in gas cars before. Every time I go for a drive it’s equally as amazing
I agree, and thats been my experience entirely. The PLAID was a literal rocket but over the 3 long range was a ton of fun as was the Long Range S I recently drove.
Ok, let's have some fun here.
@03:40 - Those people didn't precondition, causing a chain reaction where people who did precondition got screwed over, drawing in all the vultures from the mainstream news. So please keep doing research. I guarantee you, Teslas work fine in sub freezing temperatures.
@05:50 - Incorrect. Cold doesn't "suck in electricity". It's not how physics work. If you let the car go on "Sleep mode", you might lose about 1-2% a day. If it's empty after 2 weeks then you started low to begin with. No need to extrapolate anything. Just leave it at 80% SOC and you're fine.
@11:45 - Double standard. How much would you pay if you had the ability to have your own gas station in your own garage, for about 1/3 of the price per mile? And don't worry about your neighbors. No one is simultaneously transitioning to EVs to the point it will catch the grid by surprise. If it really bothers you, get some solar. I guarantee you, it's way cheaper than installing a gas station at home.
@14:10 - ICE manufacturers aren't the barometer for EV technology, in spite of what Biden or the Television says. If anything, they're a perfect example of what not to do.
@16:15 - "Is this going to be obsolete" - I'm sorry, but this statement is so absurd I can only address it with an analogy: It's like someone using a rotary phone wondering if smartphones will become obsolete one day. This might be the irony of the year.
@18:20 - I take it back. An ICE owner complaining about EV brakes might be the irony of the year. I won't even bother commenting on this one further.
@18:24 - Tire wear - This has been blown out of proportion, even more now that 3rd party vendors are jumping in bringing in competition. Unless you're taking these things to the track, you don't need $400 tires.
@19:00 - Good point about the glass. These are not ordinary and from what I understand Safelite's aftermarket replacement is sub standard, so even a traditional windshield like the Model S sets you back close to 2K.
@20:20 - 2012 - 2013 Model S aren't sitting in dealerships with no one buying them. This is pure conjecture. It's all made up. In fact, if you know of one, grab it because those have unlimited supercharging assigned to the vehicle, not the owner. The few owners I met are grinning ear to ear and won't even sell them. Saying an ICE is "Driveable" after 12 years isn't saying anything. When you factor in miles, the argument falls apart.
@20:35 - Using ICE manufacturers as the barometer for EVs again. I see this often. Talk about Tesla, do the ICE-EV switcharoo, then talk about Tesla again.
@24:00 - If you want a car that will increase in value, I suggest getting a Ferrari or some high end limited edition exotic.
@24:12 - The price of that 2012 civic is on par with the current price of a Model S same year. If you're trying to sell the idea a civic even compares to a Model S, you have your work cut out for you.
@24:41 - "If that's your single sole objective" - at this point I'm thinking less about my objective and more about who's paying this guy.
@25:23 - So you're comparing your 5 grand in oil changes to the price of an EV? This guy's just jumping the shark now.
Sometimes I wonder about the motivations of these content creators. They start off with "Hey, I'm just like you! I'm on the fence and this is my skeptical opinion!", and go from marginally reasonable to a mediocre comedy routine.
Teslas are awesome. There are chargers everywhere for longer drives. Just get the Model S Plaid... comfortable luxury, tons of practical use for a daily, and 0-60 in 2 seconds with a warranty.
They work great in the cold, but you need to precondition before supercharging. It's not a major problem in extreme cold if you have a home charger. Similar to owning a diesel.
The batteries are good for 1500 cycles. A cycle depends how fully you charge or discharge it. At 2 years and 18K miles I'm at 92 cycles. It's not a set "8 years and it's done", that's the warranty period. Many last much longer with proper care. Even longer warranties are available through Tesla, or through companies like XCare. Aa long as 15 years under full bumper to bumper warranty. Simply storing the car long term does not significantly degrade the battery - they have long term storage modes.
As electricity use increases, economies of scale should make the cost per kWh decrease. That's a huge amount currently spent on gas now going to electric companies to spend on those upgrades - the idea that it will necessitate big price jumps is false logic. If anything, the opposite. You predict price increases there but what, you think gas will get cheaper? Or go back to where it was in 2018-2020 sometime soon?
Hyundai charges stealership prices. A new Tesla Model 3 battery is about 10-13K USD installed. Battery prices are plummeting rapidly too, estimated to drop 60% in cost between now and 2030 by the time you might be out of a warranty.
You think a $50K BMW is comparable to a Model S Plaid? lol no... performance, functionality and driver assistance tech all blow the BMW out of the water, especially the BMW you'd get for that price. Then take the $3-5K in gas savings, plus the oil changes, you're absolutely saving a boatload of money compared to any vehicle with comparable performance.

Not trying to insult you or anything, I think you know a lot about cars but the way you usually shoot your videos gives me headaches. Agree 100% with everything you said in this one. Poor range, broken chargers, expensive parts/repairs/insurance and to top it off BRUTAL depreciation. Amongst the examples you mentioned, was looking at Audi E-tron the other days, 50+% down depreciation in 1(one year). I mean it's a 100k+ car. That's gotta hurt the most I believe no matter how rich you are.It's like tossing $ out the window

The Tesla model Y is the best car I’ve ever had our own. It’s been perfect. Super efficient and I get costed over the air updates that makes it like a new car again.

I'm on a condo board in a progressive county (Montgomery) in suburban Washington DC. The county isn't forcing HOAs and condo associations to install charging points--yet. The cost and construction requirements for installing electric charging are outrageous. There are so many problems ranging from upgrading amperage for our entire property, to managing the charge points, to figuring out billing, and enforcing only owners and residents to use the chargers. Just too many considerations. And we only have 2 or 3 owners/residents in our 92 unit condo association! We object to the burden being placed on the association. So frustrating!!

The battery depreciation / mile on a cheap E.V. is about 8 cents but unfortunately it also depends on whether it was fast charged a lot or trickle charged, what the temps were during use and charge, blah blah basically there is no accurate predictor of 'future' degradation rate from previous use. A single cell can connect a dendrite across and take a lot more cells out of the system.
A rule of thumb investment wise would be;
I am going to spend 50k on a Tesla and throw it in the scrap yard at 110 k miles.
You might get lucky and by then more places open to swap them out cheap.
Basically these cars are pie in the sky scalextrics toys for posers wanting 60 in sub 3 seconds. They were never thought up to be serious transport.

Great video. I live in Northeast US and the winters haven’t been bad in the past several years but whenever I look at the grid how old , outdated it is and how electricity is out every time there are storms or high winds for many towns and regions and finally the cost of electricity I realize it’s way too early to adopt this may be in two or three decades if I am still around.

I hardly see someone leave his car in freezing temperature to go do camping, fishing or anything else outside for that long...
Had an EV for 7 years now (not a Tesla), got -13°C some times in winter and no problem.
At home, I charge on a simple electric plug ... so not much electricity demand added to the grid ... and much better for battery life.
But that’s just it, they can’t because they need a little more attention

I'm in Alberta, it's cold as hell for a few months and more months out of the year is winter. I've been on the fence to get a tesla and I think all your points are valid.
The main two problems for me are having to face home charging solutions. That is up to $3000 to get a washer plug for level two... depending on many factors.
Another thing is that the car is simply too expensive. I do not think it should cost more than 50,000 Canadian for the long range. The rear wheel should not be more than 32,000.
However, if Tesla was willing to pay for the installation of home charging, maybe I would have pulled the plug.

@@SunshineVocals no. I’m in Canada. Did it myself. All I had to do is buy the plug and breaker then run some electrical wire from my electrical box to the garage. Lots of RUclips videos on installing this. Cost me 80 for the parts.

This is an awesome video. This was the same dilemna i had when i was ready to replace my awesome modified 2007 G35 Coupe which had a glorious sound for a naturally aspirated v-6. I ran this car hard for 15 years. The engine screamed between 5000 - 7000 rpm. It was fast on the top end too. It was a stick. It was very raw. How do you replace an awesome car? This is a big problem for any auto enthusiast.
Thanks, I know, its hard to replace the things that made you fall for driving in the first place. What I have seen is typically the people buying EVs are those who were NEVER car people and see these as a "cool" novelty.
@@ECPP well said. Right on. I finally replaced mine with a 2019 C43 AMG with the twin turbo V6. I cannot believe Mercedes made such a fun car. And, it is very reliable too. It has an exhaust note that pops and bangs. The newer model has 4 cylinders which is also reliable but most people want the previous v6. This car is a riot.
Wow the ‘19 AMG C 43 is an absolutely amazing and wholly underrated car! The stock exhaust sounds so good with the V6 and I agree that while the next generation looks even more amazing, especially with the ambient lighting, the 4-cylinder just doesn’t quite do it. Would be interesting to compare the soul of driving a 4 cylinder C 43 or hell even a 4-cylinder C 63 S with a Tesla Model 3 Performance which white brutally fast has zero soul (like all EVs).
@@msport4769 Mercedes say the v-6 C43 is capable of 0 - 60 in 4.5 seconds. However, using the right oil (Mercedes Oil) and right throttle input, it is capable of 0-60 in 4.2 seconds stock. This is fast enough for me. If you want faster, go for the CLA45. The first time i drove my C43, it was all smiles from ear to ear. That V-6 C43 seemed to have been designed by a group of people who just did not give a care in the world----this attitude is what gave the car its raw and beautiful character. You just need to be in city driving and then you let the pops and bangs begin. The pops are even louder than the videos on RUclips demonstrate. The pops and bangs are startling to other drivers. On one beautiful morning, around 11 am, another C43 AMG was right behind me at the light. We both took off and for a half a mile it was a riot of 2 C43s popping and banging with growling sounds that seemed like 10 cats were fighting to eat a rat. LOL. Other drivers literally stood still as they could not understand why two C300s had such loud and obnoxious exhaust. By the time the other drivers caught up with us at the next light, they realized these were not c300s. The beauty of the C43 is that it is a sleeper C300. People always think it is a C300. I believe I was lucky to escape having a ticket one time as a cop that was supposedly looking for the car making the loud noise, drove past me because he knows C300s do not make loud noises. I was in traffic like everyone else. All I had to do was switch the driving mode to comfort mode, and the car became as silent as a lamb. And also, people find it hard to reconcile a Mercedes Benz with such a crazy exhaust noise. Mercedes are known to be tame and stately. And then here is the C43 AMG defying those traditions just like the M156 C63 AMG.

I haven’t bought a new car since 1979. Our daily runner is a 2017 Chevy Impala and my summer cruiser is a 1977 Buick Electra that I bought for $2,000 in 1993. I don’t have enough money to buy a Tesla, or any other electrified nightmare, so that’s that. And more money would also have to be spent to upgrade our house’s electrical system so we could install a charging station. I live in Wisconsin, and there were major issues with the electric vehicles this past January. The charging stations don’t like cold weather either.

the story of my life, that was my biggest issue here in calgary, i have a 2015 cls amg carbon trim, and when the plaid came out i tried to make every excuse on why i need it in replace of my amg, i have awd, luxury, hold the value well, oil changes and parts is not expensive, fair on fuel, not putting much mileage and will start up on harsh weather with no worries of range anxiety, now the plaid yes extremely fast,check, range mileage NO, insurance, NO, convenient BIG MAYBE, do i have to drive like im tip toeing on slim ice YES because what if something happens to the battery that the insurance company won't cover, so from there i decided to get a 2004 f250 6.0 powerstroke bullet proofed and complete delete, fast and torque and can handle the snow with my family in it safely, i love the plaid but the risk is too steep and im not rich or highly wealthy

I'm looking at a Tesla Model S for $20k-ish because I will be using it for commuting here in the warm south. I will be mitigating wear on the battery by slow charging and not fully charging and discharging. It's my understanding that drive units really don't go out often, it's the battery that is a legitimate concern. Personally, I'm simply expecting a $5k battery REPAIR at some point, using a third party. Battery replacement is fullish. Yes, I won't be able to let the car sit with a dead battery, not a problem. I mean, I'm considering this vs a used S550 or something. My mind is not made up yet, but neither is a Toyota when it comes to maintenance...

I have a 2008 BMW xi. My wife is used to it, and the trade-in is minimal so I kept and went to a , 30000 mile used 2020 Toyota Avalon.
The Bmw was getting expensive to repair, but now it has minimal use. and is now a "beater".
My wife will not drive the Toyota ... Too complicated and a little big.
She wanted a small SUV. I said NO SUV!!! They are 4cyl turbos and ride like crap...... And a new one will cost ~$50k(USD).

In my opinion, Teslas are the best cars you can buy right now. I was on the verge of buying one for couple years but held off. Finally pulled the trigger a month back as the prices of used teslas have come down. 2022 model 3 standard range with lfp battery. Couldn’t be happier. I really don’t notice the difference in range as long as I preheat the battery before heading out. I’m in southern Ontario so it doesn’t get as cold as Alberta but it’s been great in the winter here. I don’t even plug it in overnight. Only when it needs charging. LFP batteries have a charge cycle of 3k times which equals 500k kms. How many engines will last that long? Not many. Plus no need for maintenance and costs me 4 bucks to “fill” up and gets me 400km. Can’t beat that.
One other thing I will touch on is that these conventional manufacturers DONT want to sell you a ev as they make much more money on every ICE vehicle sold. Actually, most of the manufacturers not name Tesla are losing money on every ev sold. Add to that that the dealership doesn’t get any source of income from servicing the ev and it’s easy to see why they would like to sell you a ice car instead. So this whole not going ev from Mercedes is exactly because of that. They would rather sell you a ICE vehicle to make $.
It's great in ON for town to town driving and within the city, but any inter-province travel is a challenge. It would make me stressful about the mileage if I drive a EV. Hybrid is a more practical approach in Canada. If hybrid system can get the gas mileage so efficient that small litre of gas can drive much further than now, the emission can be reduced significantly.
Congratulations! One thing I found out when I bought my Model S is that the people who suffer most from EV range anxiety and complain about charging infrastructure are people who have never owned one. They're stuck in the mentality that they just have to have an overpriced pump nearby, while we can wake up to a full tank and a cruise range of 250+ miles every morning and spend 0 seconds refilling.
And yea, for every EV an ICE manufacturer sells at a loss, that's an ICE they're not selling. They're suffering now big time while Tesla has the flexibility to play rollercoaster with their prices.
Aside from misinformation, the thing keeping ICEs marginally competitive is nostalgia.

It kinda suitable to certain lifestyle, But in North America, a road trip can be across states and provinces. Say you wanna travel from Toronto to Thunder Bay (you can say you should fly in) You have to break the trip into many longer stops. I don’t think charging stations are a problem these days, it’s just logistics and cost.
Buying a car is not a small cost, and buyers do take all scenarios into consideration. Gas car owners are waiting for an invention to solve that problem. Hybrid is one. The option of EV having a ICE as a range extender like Nissan e-Power, Mazda rotary range extender, or BMW i3 is an excellent idea.

As of recently, a new Model Y Long Range in the US could be had for less than the higher trims of RAV4, CX-5, CR-V, Forester. $38-39K inventory cars with promotions. Who knows what depreciation will look like but when it sells in the same territory of a conventional/hybrid ICE CUV, I think it’s compelling enough to keep its value.

Two things you must add in, higher insurance costs, you will go through tires every 25k miles. The fact you live in Canada where it's very cold in the winter, the battery draining. I personally refuse to buy an ev. There are to many negatives to owning an ev.

I like most of your Vids, well presented backed by great knowledge on cars. However, it is myth a Tesla just sits there parked burning through battery. For the most part the car uses no power at all when parked, even in extreme cold weather. Yes the car loses range in cold weather, and the battery needs warm up before a drive and kept warm, and it's common for all EVs. But that is only when the car is being DRIVEN. When the car is parked it does nothing to keep the battery warm. The battery does not need being kept warm when not in use. On average my tesla loses about .5% power parked per day. Many tesla owners haven reported almost no battery usage even in very cold temperatures. Now, the battery may sustain some damage when it dips below -50, but that's a real edge case.

Well thought out legitimate points. I think the extreme weather issues are a big concern. The majority of the time when the weather is not extreme if one is driving less than 225 miles per day and can charge at home it is the most convenient. If you’re looking for the most American made (parts and assembly)vehicle it is a Tesla. If you’re someone who is geo-politically minded and you want to support our European allies who were affected by Russian/Putin shutoff heating oil, if you’re one who understands that war over oil has/continues to happened; if you’re one who understands that batteries are 90%+ recyclable (per Redwood Materials in Nevada) you can understand that mining for the raw materials will be less needed because recycling has the potential to become a closed system all the while driving battery costs down…where one spends their energy/money is very important not just about one’s self but also in community/humanity terms
People thinking like that would have still been riding a horse and buggy since cars and automobiles eliminated carriage companies and all the hundreds of workers and farmers and cleaners and stable maintenance people. Not to mention having to pay for the road infrastructure and new spacing and paving and laws and considerations due to increased speed and technology which all came from our pockets. They also created tons of opportunities for more jobs! New industries and new technologies. Just battery technology itself, in such a short time has already developing so fast that we are using far less rare materials for a lot more efficiency. Technology has a way to push the narrative forward and many believe that more efficient transfer of power via electricity is better than fuel and wasting 60% as heat, noise and pollution. We can agree that ev is still very much into it's infancy so it's only exciting t see what else they can come up with. How much more lighter and better can you make them? but to eliminate evs from consideration is, frankly, shortsighted.
The future is bright. We will see.
I agree with your conclusion. Ultimately does anyone other than large families and tradesmen really need anything other than a Toyota Camry or Honda Civic to get around town/60 mile daily radius? You get a Tesla for similar reasons you for why you get a Lexus or MB, but don’t need it.

If you have a level 2 charger, you will rarely use level 3. that's like a $ 5, 000 credit you will never use.

On a personal note, my nephew bought one. Very, very low mileage, pristine condition. It's in Chicago. He doesn't have a home charger and it sits most of the time. Let me know if you're still possessed by it and I'll get you a fair price.

How can the government ever mandate only that a EV car can be sold...EV's are for rich people..the average person can't afford a EV...even a 30k dollar car is out of reach for most people. I just bought a new 2024 car and didn't even think about buying a EV and I dont think I ever will buy a EV...btw, I drove my first EV..a Tesla and yes the acceleration was alwsome..but I was really surprised how much battery was used with just a few hard acceleration runs up to maybe 80 mph...it was a fun test drive.

Thing is your pricing was incorrect. Fact is the tesla model 3 if you have a garage in your home makes alot of sense. Prices on those vehicles are now at the cost of a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Second, yes there have been instances of them going up in flames but to be honest they catch all the attention because it is new tech. Looking honestly at how many vehicles go up in flames electric or not many ICE vehicle's go up in flames every year but they are not reported on. Back to the costs, most people drive 95% within 25 miles of their home. If you have access to a charger at home, it is way cheaper to operate a electric vehicle vs an ice if you take into account maintenance and fuel. By the way if you are changing your oil 2 times a year any ICE vehicle no matter how good it is you going to end up with failures within 6 to 7 years. I still change my oil at no more than every 4000 miles. Now insurance might be different, but to be honest insurance on all ice vehicles have gone up in price 25% in general over the last year. It is not just on electric vehicles.
To be totally honest I don't think you can make an honest assessment until you actually experience and try to live with one for at least a lease period (3 years), see how it really goes for you. That will give you a long enough period of time to honestly evaluate for yourself. There is too much negativity on EV fueled by special interests (mainly the oil industry) because it impacts their bottom line ($$$).
I will be honest with you. I love ICE vehicles that is all i have ever owned but i am curious with respect to all electric. My suggestion is by a 2 year old already depreciated vehicle Tesla Model Y or 3. See how it goes and make videos on that.
I do my maintenance, drive conservitly, and my toyota doesn't die.

Why keep the battery warm when you are not there? Just begin to warm it up when you are ready to go? It might take a while, but you won’t be stranded.
Frozen batteries can deteriorate and the car does it automatically anyway. Its up to the owner to provide enough charging to stay ahead of the discharge.

I leased a 2023 VW ID.4 for 3 years. The biggest draw to me was the free 3 years of charging. However my wife and I also have two other cars. She drives a BMW X5 and I also have a BMW 135I Cabrio. The EV is great for around town but not for long drives.
I use my Tesla for 900mi+ trips and no issues, it just requires planning routes, which Tesla maps does for you. Plus I stop every 2-3hrs anyways, for 15min break, you can charge 5-80% on supercharger. I would not get any other EV because supercharger system is so much better than any other. I use to have a non Tesla EV before, I used electrify American which is horrible, only works half the time.

Objectively, one can argue for and against EVs and it seems to come back to individual needs or beliefs.
To your point, I don't believe that you need to spend $80k for a "run about" vehicle. This includes the electrical service upgrade, etc.
That's the bottom line, right there.
And for that cost, the EV is subject to your road conditions and, perhaps the weather conditions, etc.
One " political aspect" was briefly covered pertaining to mandates, which seems to be sliding back, by the manufacturers, extending out to a longer period of time.
It's well known what Tesla, specifically, can do to "regulate" the EV, not including any specific National grid control might occur "for the common good". Paranoia on my part? No, as areas in the US utilize rolling blackouts and other means to control the inadequate (and getting worse) grid system in place. So how is that going to affect you in the future if longevity is a consideration?
Remember your future "social score". It's coming to North America. And not too long from now, with the current ( no pun) political climate.

Hi Thomas, great to hear from you again and yes it is a very interesting discussion as I know the further south a person goes, the more densely populated are charging facilities and becomes a much more compelling conversation as both the ease of charging and the weather impacts are far less of an issue. As you go further north such as us, it’s much more sparse and really only good if a person stays on the beaten path, and does not stray. The other bits of politic agenda, shut off switches, and monitoring of owners behaviour and even speech within the vehicle, and additionally the tax bill sen to owners as “road tax” feels very open to “arbitrary numbers”. All of the issues mentioned are valid and well thought out. But you left one important problem out with Tesla - the monopoly on parts and service information/support by the manufacturer. Independent shops have been very slow to adopt Tesla as a serviced brand because of the company's atrocious behavior early on in attempting to monopolize all aspects of service. Even now, restrictive licensing agreements between Tesla and its parts suppliers are preventing competition in the marketplace for aftermarket parts alternatives. This monopoly on parts/service has kept cost of repairs very high and produced lengthy waits on certain parts that Tesla is behind in stocking. When everything is considered - the overstated and limited range, quality issues, cold and hot weather problems, battery degradation, fire concerns when garage charging, high insurance cost, high initial cost and rapid depreciation, poor public charging infrastructure, and monopolistic corporate service/support practices - you'd have to be a fool or utterly delusional to enthusiastically embrace Tesla ownership.
To bad many of the auto companies jumped into EV's and now are paying the price for not looking further that there are consequences.
And so are buyers, I'll just keep my ICE car and spend like $20.00 to $30.00 US per month.

I've stopped watching Pro EV channels as they are totally blinkered and they never listen to a reasoned rebuttal of their views so it does make me laugh when EV owners only acknowledge their side of an argument .
The main being , better acceleration, less maintenance/service cost, lower fuel cost.
My rebuttals are how many times are you gonna go 0-60 on your commute to work with most limits being 30-40 mph zones and how much range does that knock off when you only have 60% of battery you can use to keep your battey healthy. I could do that all day and not have to stress about making it to wherever I'm going, how long it would take to fill up if i couldnt for some random reason, whether the fuel pump would be working or if there was somebody waiting to fill up.
I dont know about other ICE owners but i have my diesel serviced at 18000 miles or 2 years at about £400 P&L. So maintenance and servicing is hardly extortionate. In 35 years of driving ICE I've had a new clutch in a 1984 Nissan Sunny and a timing chain in the wife's 1991 Micra. So for me their M/S point is a non starter.
The fuel cost is bollocks too. If an EV cost 20k more than equivalent ICE and i spend 1k on fuel , that's 20 years before a fuel cost favours an EV. Even if i factor in servicing and EV charging its still about 10-14 years before an EV works as an option and thats being extremely generous as EV owners seem to count charging at home as FREE as they dont physically pay 😂
Plus my time is more valuable than sitting around waiting at a charger, its also cheaper cos i dont need to find random shit to do that costs money to fill the time 🙄🙄

It's interesting because I feel like the EV world is in a weird spot because of charging infrastructure. I think if you are super of the super rich elite class, it's much more practical than a normal car because say you have solar for example and a battery bank that helps power your home, getting an EV means you're not spending a dime to charge more often then not unless you're taking long trips to places. Tesla can get you over 300 range with decent driving so the idea that you'd be in bad shape only comes into play during winter if you live in state like how he does, or in a place where there isn't many chargers that are close to you.

I have several coworkers who own Tesla vehicles.
The area experienced the harshest winter in years and many public chargers were malfunctioning.
My workplace doesn't have available charging.
Many of the Tesla owners had to rent vehicles for the duration of the cold snap and many of them had to work remotely because their vehicle didn't have adequate range for their round trip.
The supervisor who replaces me at 3:00 bought a Tesla last year and all you heard about was how wonderful it was because of its performance technology and how he could charge at home.
His previous vehicle was a Honda CRV with over 300,000 miles and he was saving that for his daughter when she turned 16.
Guess what he ended up driving during the cold snap?
When I kidded them about it he got very defensive but I pointed out that my car started and ran perfectly and I could use the climate control the heated seats steering wheel radio wipers lights and rear defogger all the time without having to worry about them reducing my range!
I bet the Tesla's you saw @ -40 were all garage kept.

My thing is anything that is man made is gonna have ups and downs. Even Toyota have to dump their hydrogen powered cars for cheap. I live in Texas, and i know many Tesla owners. They haven't had one problem with their Teslas. Last week I met a man that still have a 2014 Tesla Model S P 85+. He only had to maintain the battery once. It wasn't the whole battery. Just a few cells had to be changed. Anything man-made will have flaws. I plan on getting a Tesla, but i am still going to keep my Chevy.

The clear purpose of Tesla is not to be exciting which would replace sports car driving. It's only purpose is to take you from point A to point B super economically if you can charge it at home. There is no soul or excitement in the car that's for sure. The point is to save money and commute all around the city daily. Other than that you might stick to Merc or Jaguar.
