Film Companion was so lovely, homegrown, familiar, bright, sunny, and smart. This feels boring, washed out, western - not us. Feels like they’ve colonialised our film reporting :(
Among the many voices in the world of film critics, there’s Anupama Chopra… I’m pretty sure I was one of the first subscribers to Film Companion back in the day, and I’ve been a loyal fan ever since. Now, I’ve followed her to this new platform, and after all these years, one thing hasn’t changed-her authenticity! Thank you, Anupama, for everything you do.
It's wonderful to hear your reviews Anu ❤ Ananya is definitely choosing good films finally! She has acted well in this one ! Vihaan has done a good job as well
Ananya is choosing great projects and getting better and better with every movie. I always look forward to Ananyas movies. Loved her in dream girl 2, kho gaye hum kaha, Call me bae and now CTRL.
Happy that Anupama Chopra is back, to review movies & interview the film fraternity. One suggestion to the THR: all your videos are very poorly lit! It is hard to see the people & their expressions. Why not make the videos brighter?
I deeply respect and admire Anupama Chopra but please don't have 60% of the review runtime dedicated to narrating plot beats. I am here as a fellow cinephile to understand how it made you feel and thoughts it triggered. Plot summary and factoids about the movie can be part of that not majority...just my 2 cents.
I like your programs Anu madam …but didnt like this light arrangement at all …and i think you also come from the same age group of mine …what i mean to say is u r not lije gen z or something to like these studio lights😗😗
Is Ananya Pandey capable of doing a role that is NOT merely a derivate of her actual personality? I shudder to think how she'd do in a genuinely dramatic role. No hate, but her opportunity pipeline is entirely unjustified as against her talent or ability. Can someone name a genuine blockbuster hit from Ananya in the last 4 years? Don't worry, I'll wait.
What is meant by a dramatic role? Lots of crying and emotion? I don't think doing a dramatic role is the definition of acting chops. May be she should do a more subtle role. Call me Bae was a surprising hit for Amazon. Trended in 35 countries and is still trending in India. By OTT definitions, it is a success. Had cultural impact and has another season coming up. Considering shows headed by female actors in India rarely become hits unless say by an SLB, quite an achievement. As for playing roles that are close to herself, so far, it has worked for her. Many of the urban genz and millennial women feel represented in the roles she has been playing. So she is creating a niche audience for herself as she grows in her craft. Quite a clever thing to do unlike her other more privileged contemporaries like Jhanvi and Sara who have tried and failed at doing either the mass heroine or the roles that require greater acting chops. Her opportunity pipeline is justified as she is playing roles that tap into the anxieties and thrills of a new generation which she can quite relate to and represent. She is not doing roles that somebody else is suited to or can do better.
Have you seen any of her movies? You seem to blindly hating bub because she's a nepo kid. I have seen her in Dream Girl 2 and this one now. She's a decent actress IMO.
@@rooner4206 There is clearly a difference in skill level between (i) actors who simply project their own personality on screen; and (ii) actors who convincingly play complex, challenging roles that are entirely unconnected to their own personality. You may be impressed with Ananya simply playing herself (category (i) actor) but you’ve set the bar shockingly low for actors then. It is entirely legitimate to suggest, as I have done above, that an actor is less accomplished if they are unable to play challenging roles and which are not simply caricatures of their own personality. Ananya has proved unable to achieve this in 5 years and that is the nub of my entirely valid criticism. You bizarrely scoff at ‘crying’ and ‘emotion’ yet these are incredibly challenging to perform convincingly on screen and are absolutely examples of ‘acting chops’. What do you mean by subtlety? Showing a dearth of expression and looking sombre? Subtlety is absolutely be a dramatic quality but whatever your definition, given Ananya’s roles hitherto are almost exclusively bubbly, loud or flamboyant, that adjective can hardly be applied to her or them. Ananya has only shown she can perform emotions well for a very narrow, limited template character that is effectively a minor variant on her own personality. If you think is a laudable achievement then that sets the bar extremely low for actors generally that they can just play themselves and that achieves equivalence with an actor who has given an outstanding performance in a demanding, challenging role e.g. Alia Bhatt in Gangubai. Regarding the pipeline, the point here is that she has been a working actor since 2019. It is now late 2024 and she’s only now given the ‘hit’ you cite: ‘Call Me Bae’. This was not a hit in the cinema halls by the way but OTT, which is not the same thing unfortunately. Viewers may be happy to watch an OTT show on a platform they've already paid a subscription fee for, but entirely unwilling to pay good money to go and see that same content in a cinema but let’s leave that to one side. The vast majority of actors are not so lucky to be given a constant stream of opportunities with the best directors and producers over many years to prove themselves until they finally deliver a hit. To see that her ‘hit’ is a product of just projecting her personality on screen suggests she is not really an actor but more of a 'social-media-influence' personality existing in the film space.
Anupama and gang's monopoly on the film criticism space is sickening. Only Anmol Jammwal has come close to having a different voice, but even he does collabs with these people.
Lovely to see you back anu. But I really preferred the bright yellow background of FC over the black and red of the THR.
And this particular red/black setting feels melancholic!
I think the red on black bg and no props/show pieces make it melancholic.

Ananya is my favorite actress after watching call me bae. She is soo good in it. CTRL is a completely different genre and she did justice to it.
I'm amazed at your ability to say all of that with a straight face. 😂

So glad to hear from you, Anupama! I was wondering if you would continue to review movies after moving to THR. So very glad you are!! Thank you!

Came from film companion ❤️
Anupama Chopra will only give positive review for Ananya pandey films even before watching

So true

I had the same thought.
Anupama ❤
Outdated movie seems like it is set in 2011
Anupama please give the review standing up (not sitting) like u did in FC
CTRL is a really chilling thriller. Ananya plays nella with conviction.
I loved CTRL. Ananya is evolving as an actress so much.
This was less of a movie review and more of a Wikipedia plot summary
Review on ARM , Kishkinda kaanadam and kondal
Hi Anupama....
Please do not reveal plot in the review. Only opinions
Just saw the movie and absolutely loved it except for the ending, which I couldn't really understand.
