    From an NA player's POV (i'm on North), it was really disappointing. We were primarily focusing on tempest but knew that darkstar, and uwu would still be a decent match. So it was disappointing when them and darkstar sat out but we still had UWU. Then they came at us with peasants and fire mages because they knew they were losing... North as a whole was disappointed.
    We trained and spent alot of time preparing mechanically and strategically. Then UwU started throwing midway through the match with fire mages and peasant loadouts to save face and say "oh we weren't even trying."
    That was only the first group stages so hopefully the top 8 will be more eventful and we can have a real tournament.

    Outside perspective here: I heard a lot of complaining about the size of/lack of prize pools for these events, particularly from the NA players, but how can you expect these organisers to put up significant prize pools for what essentially amounts to a piss up? If you’re not going to take the event seriously, you can’t expect to be given serious prizes. People who tune in to try watch this competitive scene are going to see teams forfeiting, throwing and memeing - they’re going to see that and just go straight back to watching casual play, because why wouldn’t they? There’s barely a difference if teams behave like that.
    You have to be the change you want, if you want the competitive scene to grow outside of the core player base, you have to take the events seriously and pull in the people who are searching for entertaining competitive play.
    Flair and entertainment value is fine, particularly in an e-sport setting but there’s a limit, putting out a whole team with meme load outs (regardless of whether you’re winning or losing the round) is not only disrespectful to the opposing team’s hard work, but it just screams “this isn’t a competitive scene”.
    This isn’t hate against either side, i just think the whole scene needs to have a look at the way it’s coming across to people outside of the core player base and consider that if they want to grow the sport and make it serious, they have to change and take themselves seriously first, or you can’t expect others to.

    Only point I agree with:
    There's a case of the pot calling the kettle black where VK goes and memes in tourneys where they're gonna win the match, yet other teams can't do the same troll. The only difference is "well we were gonna win, so therefore it's not trolling". It's still a disrespect, and it's hypocritical to tell one team "don't do this or your banned" but when you're a community influence and a strong team it's magically a-okay for you do the same thing. It's straight up a logical fallacy.
    I agree that yes, it gets publicity, and yes it's not a throw. But it still really hurts your case, and you could argue it's what inspires other teams to try the same strats when instead they could be trying their hardest and we'd have more high intensity match to show for it. Maybe if VK never tossed rocks or went Sparticus on tourneys people wouldn't try to do the same. Maybe a stretch, but it's now a contentious point.
    Again, I agree with you that there's *degrees* (not many) of nuance here, but the point stands that you need to walk the talk. Good video, great points, and to be completely honest *their* argument is also a fallacy, a red-herring specifically. In fact, pretty much half the rubbish out of their mouths was riddled with poor-bait and straight up infantile rejection of critique. Truly pathetic.

    • @Stouty
      @Stouty  5 лет назад +2

      It's an issue that wont present itself again so long as future events have a prize pool as this will naturally encourage teams to play properly whenever they're at risk of losing, but you'd still expect teams to want to win without one like in EU

      Benton Pellet VK put on a show because they knew they could win, hence creating hype and loads of views on YT.
      NA decided to joke in the grand finals, realised they couldn't win and forfeited.
      "It's still disrespect" not really, it legitimately shows skill. Depending on the load out and weapons used in the battle if they're not broken weapons like the maul or short spear and shield then it is alright! Just because someone is better than you doesn't automatically mean they're Toxic or trying to disrespect the players, all they did was make the game harder for themselves so that it's a good fight and not completely one sided, this is known as going easy on a player as you are aware of your and their skill so decided to give them a chance.
      Same as in football if the player knew he's better than the other he attempts skills to beat the other player, preforming skills can be difficult but pay off well or not pay off at all. VK had skill NA had none

  • @carsontodd9267
    @carsontodd9267 5 лет назад +33

    *I know this is long but just read it*
    This is an absolute pathetic joke. On both sides of the spectrum.
    The tournament rules should be stiff and firm. Outlining the format of the tournament as well as giving the rules in a quick, easy, and short manner. They should not be A) Making rules up on the fly, and B) Creating and adding more and more rules after each tournament, that are entirely situational. IE "No team losing shall use the carving knife...." etc. That just makes the rule book needlessly long, and pisses players off. Making them unlikely to return to that tournament. Thus killing the competitive scene of the game, which decreases exposure. Which is what this game needs.
    Serious players will rise to the top, and eventually populate the teams. Then we will see less and less meme comps coming out when a team is losing.
    Then on the other side of this. Players should be allowed to do what they want within reason. Watching high level play is interesting, but cheesing your way into a win is also interesting and is a part of the game. Thus should be allowed. It makes for a far more interesting tournament when I know a team isn't going to get banned for running around with a meme comp. I might get to see it, I might not. Either way, cheesing is apart of this game and it should be allowed. Albeit, if the team is just intentionally throwing, like picking peasants and just emoting while people kill them, then that should be sent to the higher ups of the tourney where a decision can be made. But if a team is just memeing to have fun or to cheese in a a win, then it should be allowed. To ban something like that is an insult to the team dealing with the memers. It not only insults their competency and ability as players, but their over all skill.

      Because the game is already dead in terms of people interested in its actual gameplay.

    They have a pretty solid point in arguing you're a hypocrite for thinking it's fine to use meme loadouts to snub your opponent when you're certain they'd lose anyway. It's fundamentally the exact same principle, you're just railing against it when they're doing it. Either don't do it at all or admit you have an egregious double standard. All I could notice throughout was you danced away from acknowledging that yes, you're happy to cheapen the concept of competition when it suits you but when someone else does it in a way you dislike suddenly it's an issue of gigantic proportions and a mockery you can't abide is being made of the spirit of things. The closest you came was justifying it with the excuse of 'oh well publicity.' Okay? What's that mean? Doesn't address the core criticism in any way. Doesn't matter if it gives you the attention you admittedly crave, that has nothing to do with the point. Lame showing on both sides, and I'm ultimately left inclined to agree with whoever told you to hang yourself because it's quite funny and none of you produced anything more worthwhile from this whole debate.

That is an undeniable fact by your own admission whether you are cognisant of it or not, an inescapable truth which doesn't respect time or place at the - and I am stressing this - FUNDAMENTAL level. That's the core issue of why it's hard to take your righteous indignation seriously. You're not morally superior to them, you just possess a supposed better sense of timing in performing an identical insult, both of which undermine the spirit of competition.
      Once you move away from that all you can argue is the rather pedantic detail of whether it's more respectful to slowly, tortuously belittle your opponent into a defeat whilst calling it a handicap or just finish things quickly and efficiently and let everyone be on your way. Personally, to me it's obvious which I prefer from having been on both sides of the scenario. I'd say you're delusional if you think your method is kindness, but you again don't have an issue with admitting you don't think it is so that's hardly relevant.

You are 100% correct in saying what they did was reprehensible or even outright wrong. What makes you look hilariously dumb is you're happy to brush your own instances of NOT doing that under the rug merely because of the laughable excuse that 'oh well my mitigating circumstances are [x] and [y].' Again, doesn't matter. The point is there's no mitigation for the principle. It's still principally doing the exact same thing. You didn't acknowledge that when they pointed it out and you clearly won't do it here either. Don't preach a standard or spirit of things when you'll willingly engage in the same behaviour whilst passing it off for whatever reason suits you - that is definitively hypocrisy. Fuck that people have bills to pay man. If they want people to come and spend their own fucking time to play in their tournament that they make money off of it is completely reasonable to expect to be compensated for that. The difference between uwu and the teams that decided to not play is that uwu is a bunch of trolls. Beyond playing for the time that is actually going to give rewards, ie the matches up till you qualify for the real money league, i see no reason to expect people to stick around.

      @@Stalutes64 This is a really terrible take, and for many reasons. For one, you lack the understanding of what creates comp scenes and what has created esports as an entire industry. Passion. There were no investors, no companies, and no prize pools in the early days. People played because they wanted to be the very fucking best, and they already did that in non-tournament ranked settings. Tournaments were a chance to test themselves at a higher degree, and gain renown for their efforts. As views spiked, followings were created, and revenue pumped into the scene; a prize pool began to form to further support and bring life to the competition.
      So what steps are missing here? Mordhau is not a big game, Mordhau does not have a huge following, nor does it have established or safe investments for companies within its esports scene. This means the only thing that can drive or bring life to it is passion. The passion to play, gain followings, and create amazing moments for more popularity. Your viewpoint is exceptionally entitled, and you completely miss the entire origin story or growth cycle of an esports industry as well as small-time competitive scene.
      But to put it even more simply for you. No one invests in something with no return. Tournament winnings are investments. No views? No big scene? No huge names? No safe investment. They trolled and spit on their own platform to success. They contributed directly to harming the possibility of future prize pools, instead of showcasing their passion, hyping people up, and attracting more views as well as potential for investors to consider Mordhau's scene a safe investment. Money doesn't grow on tree's.

    I guess one of Stouty's points is that competing teams should try to win and it doesn't matter if they troll as long as they're sure they're winning. It's all about winning basicly. Trolling without intention of winning ruins the competition.
    Another point mentioned by someone in the video is that trolling has negative consequences even when the trolling team is sure of a win. Apart from getting disrespect, the losing team loses motivation and ability to improve when the other team shits on them with suboptimal strats.
    My take is that trolling by better teams should be kept at a reasonable level to respect less experienced comp players. Also so we can get an good representation of skill gap and how better teams actually outplay others in a fair fight.

They buy it because of the silly meme builds, frying pans, and general choas that makes us all laugh. The main issue with tournaments is there just bland fest, no average joe is going to understand the technical side of the fighting. They need objectives, and other things audiences can actually visualize. This also will help with teams that might not have the best melee game, who can outsmart teams rather then simply out play them.

Is it that important to run rocks and peasants? Just stop doing it and promote a more serious scene overall if thats truly what youre looking for. Its as easy as that, but for some reason both sides want to keep their trolling in competitive matches alive. As a viewer it would be much more interesting to see the actual game all the time instead of when people think it might actually be a close match,or in the case of NA, when they dont need a scapegoat for losing. More rigid tournament rules could fix all of this from happening again. Hopefully we wont see dumb shit like this again.

    And here I am wondering why it's hard to find a clan that would take things as seriously as I do. I'd love to compete even though I know I'd get destroyed just so I can further understand how much more I need to practice.

    Don't know why people are so butthurt. Let people play the game how they want or don't have those loadouts/classes/whatever in the game. You can't seriously expect to disqualify people for using something that is in your game that you designed without looking ridiculous.

    Okay so... this was an absolute trainwreck of a conversation, but I DO UNDERSTAND some of the points they were trying to make. I couldn't understand how playing with a disavantadge is being seen as such a bad move. It was a call from their team, and they were still trying. It all ends up as entertainment in the end.
    Sure, it's "trolling" or "memeing", but honestly, if your adversary does this, why would it be such a deal? Just play how you would normally play, it could still end up as a great match. And if it's a serious competition, hey your job just got easier! You have a higher chance of winning now, while at the same time people from the "outside" of the scene can be more entertained. On that note... not sure who that was, but someone said the NA scene was "pandering to the casuals" at one point. Honestly that's just a bad way of thinking about the community in general, in my opinion. Comp player or casual, you are a fan of the game. Casual players can also enjoy the comp scene. That sort of segregation just end up splitting the community of a game more and more. That's how I see it at least.
    TL,DR; Some players took a match way too seriously, causing unnecessary drama about it. Of course, I'm not saying you have to approve of what NA did or even like them as players, but just... I don't know. You got to fight peasants! Just take the advantage.

    Would cosplaying as King dedede count as a meme loadout? I mean, he has a warhammer and bashes peoples skulls in so it's useable.

    I stopped playing Mordhau competitively because of teams / individuals like this that refuse to fight, troll, or just don't care. It's essentially meet peoples unrealistic quotas or just stay at the same skill level forever. Mordhau competitive isn't even genuinely that fun when I remember going hard at it. Just a lot of drama on the NA side of things.

    This attitude is the worst. There are so many people playing competitive in smaller games who would be glad if there was ANY prize money at all. And yet, they take it as serious as possible.
    As much as I agree with you though, being toxic towards less-skilled teams is really bad lack of sportsmanship. Maybe it's good for publicity, but that doesn't make it any better.

    From a regular player's point of view, I see no problem in people rocking meme builds, it is their prerogative. Sure it's disrespectful to the other team, but so what? It adds flavor and character to each of the teams, which translates to you routing for or against them. I'm not sure what the rules were when the tournament started, but if the "no meme builds" rule was added halfway through, then the organizers are incompetent. They should not be making rule changes whilst the tournament is in progress. Instead, revise the rules for the next tournament.
    Also, I don't understand the reasoning behind why it's okay to meme if you're winning, but not if you're losing. It is especially disrespectful to meme someone you're beating, except of course, if you are PainandHumiliation, who is by far the most fun player to watch. If an average group decides to meme a super-tryhard group after losing a few rounds, it turns from a massacre to something a little more entertaining to watch. And after watching dudes feint each other to death for half an hour straight, it sure is a welcome sight.

    • @Stouty
      @Stouty  5 лет назад

      It's an issue that fixes itself when prize pools are presents - why meme when you could instead win money? That being said I think memeing whilst losing or from the very start as an underdog to lose even harder is pretty pathetic; it sucks to watch, it doesn't give you experience and shows the weak mental attitude of the team

  • @limestrider7491
    @limestrider7491 5 лет назад +2

    If you wish to meme in a event that’s fine. Your more then likely to loose for it and be destroyed. But when a Ref or position of power says stop you stop. Then to complain and for some teams to not even attempt is where I see the fault lies.
