Hi Guys!
In this gig log, we provide supplemental sound at FOH for T-Productions (Tony Talmaro) for the annual Pequannock township "Hoedown". We brought out half of our BassBoss system- 4 Vs21 powered 21" subwoofers and 2 Dv12 powered Micromains. We mounted the Dv12's on On-Stage-Stands sub poles which at their maximum height had a little bit of wiggle to them. We have since ordered the k&m locking sub poles which will eliminate any wiggle and the need for the (bright orange) straps. All in all the setup/deployment of this system is incredibly fast, and with an all powered system we have no need for heavy amp racks and multiple speakon cables. Simply Run Power and signal to the speakers.
We used the Midas Consoles M32 (full size) desk to run FOH and monitors. We ran a Left/Right/Mono setup for FOH and used the mono bus as our "aux fed" subwoofer out. This seems to really clean up the mix and allows you to only send what you want to the subs. We ran our drums, bass, and keyboards into the subs and kept all vocals, guitars, and cymbals only in the 2 dv12 micro mains. Also setup DCA groups for vocals,drums,strings,keyboard, and FOH tape (filler music).
I find that the DCA groups are most helpful when we run different bands/musicians back to back as with the school of rock. It gives you a single fader to bring down to compensate for a hard or soft drummer/singer etc. I tend to use them less once I get a band dialed in where I like them. Also ran a slight 40ms reverb and just a touch of stereo delay on the vocals to fatten them up a little.
We ran absolutely NO EQ on FOH. I repeat, we ran NO EQ on FOH. The BassBoss system performs that well right out of the box. We ran the dv12's in preset 4 (100hz x-over) and the vs21's somewhere around 3-4 o'clock on the XFO knob. We also ran the tops and subs at unity gain.
We ran two qsc k12.2 monitors and 2 yamaha dsr112 on monitor duty. We had to cut a significant amount of the higher end on them to eliminate feedback. Under the tent and the acoustics of it required some big notches around 5khz and some in the lower mids as well. With this eq though we were able to achieve plenty of gain before feedback.

@@highoctaneproductionsllc7380 I’m a small time Dj slash sound guy and I’m trying to get my hands on my first VS21 Sub because I keep hearing how great it is and how deep and hard that bass hits you and it can run at 2400 watts continuously it’s outrageous they are super expensive and will take me a while to pay the one off but I’m told it’s well worth it right now I have two powered Electro voice ETX 18sp’s with swapped out woofers that sound pretty good and for slightly bigger ballrooms or outside stuff I usually use my two Yorkville LS1208 passive scoop wich I love just hate having to have a separate amp rack but they rarely come out the garage with the one bass boss VS21 I’m hoping to shake shit crazy in some of these hotels🤣

U have a stage my friend put those subs all closer together n u will gain more decibles n less cancelation in the middle as u have those subs too far apart. Now it is a great set up stereo L/R how u have it and i would set it up like that and the bass would be good enoug no problem but again if i could i woukd put them closer and i would put 2 more tops instead of 2

What cab has impressed me for its size although a DIY design is actually the Bill Fitzmauric Omnitop, although they are not designed to play as low as the DV12. The compression horns are quite shrill in the upper mid without EQ though. This is the only thing I wondered, whether you lose a bit of top chest kick from tuning them in the 40s instead of 80Hz - the extension costing you output at the sub crossover range - the price paid for a speaker that can work either full range or with subs. Does this cause a slightly more pillowy sound? The other top I can think of which can play a similar range and some bass is the Barefaced FR800. Never heard either cab though so can't comment.

You could stack the subs and then put the speaker at the top like a tower...It whould look much nicer and played better!
Dj Mkay we often deploy the system like that, since this video was recorded we have upgraded to the k&m locking sub poles too which are rock solid, no need for any straps. The ground was pretty soft from rain the days before this event so it was prob the better choice to keep the subs on the ground- the other thing to consider too is the sight lines to the stage- I actually prefer the sound of it with the subs on the floor as they can couple with the ground, so when we are going for max output they are always on the ground if they can be. This event was definitely not a “max output “ type event- We actually did the same event the following year with only 2 subs.
Here’s the system stacked up, was actually the very first time we used it. It’s done a whole lot more work in the last 3 years since then!

salin gualotuna I prefer the sound of bassboss over the rcf speakers, I find that rcf response graphs aren’t always real world numbers, and they tend to use a lot of compression to try to squeeze out every last Db from them. Wattage wise the bassboss tops have more each than a pair of hdl20a , also have 20° more horizontal coverage. When you compare pricing the 4 hdl20 would be about $10k new and a pair of dv12 would be $6k new. I do think that would be a good match up though to hear side by side
Recommend a trailer mounted water cooled enclosed diesel generator. Watch the rental market used equipment sales and auctions. Hit an auction where a larger quantity of these hit the auction. Picked up one fueled with 30 gallons of fuel, performed a test run, and bought it for under $1,000. A couple weekends a year will pay for itself. Wired for 50A 240V twist lock to construction spider boxes on 100 foot cables for 6 20A outlets in a rain resistant box.

We’ve had them out the last 2 weeks in a local club- and I have been running them about 1/2 volume even at the peak of the night- they truly are amazing. Sorry for the late post to this topic... I am considering buying some Bassboss VS21s for live band use and noticed your statement:

The XFO knob is the crossover frequency knob correct? 90hz is considered at the 12 o'clock position I believe so 3 o'clock is nearing the 100hz setting which is pretty high for that box. How did the kick drum and bass guitar sound? What is the unity gain setting on the VS21s?
Hey Rufus Crowder! Happy to answer what I can about your questions.
Preset 4 on the dv12 gives you max output/volume and does indeed cross it at 100hz.
As far as the gain structure, I generally try to get things set so that the meters on the Midas are at peak just as the speaker starts to blink the limiter- for the dv12 0db straight 12oclock usually achieves this- when running them straight out of a dj controller or sometimes a different desk, I do need to add a little to get things to limit all at the same time.
We typically run the subs in an “aux send” configuration using the mono channel of the L/R/M of the main bus in the Midas- the subs can take pretty much anything you can throw at them, so we usually run the gain wide open all the way clockwise-
The design of this sub is very well suited to live sound and I very much prefer bass guitar and kick drum out of these cabinets over a double 18” , constantly smile when we fire it up for sound check and start with the kick. Really is incredible.
The Exo is abbreviated for “effective cross over” and does indeed act as the crossover for the sub. All the way clockwise gets you 100hz, all the way counter clockwise gets you 80hz. They refer to it as effective cross over because there is more going on than just a simple low pass filter.
What we’ve found now with a good amount of shows on them, is 100hz works really well with the dv12 box and 80hz generally with the at212- there’s some variation to this depending on rooms, but that’s a good general rule of thumb.
Not sure where you are located but If you have the opportunity to listen to them in live music setting- they really do speak for themselves. Playing down to 25hz @-3db is just a bonus!!!

DJ Anamaly bassboss doesn’t make anything that doesn’t sound amazing! The At312 is an amazing speaker. I heard them at Dj expo. Hey It really only depends on what kind of events you plan on doing with them. Check out Jpc Entertainment in Tallahassee Fl he runs a bassboss rig with the At212 (I think) tops and has been doing really large events with them. I would say give David at bassboss a call and talk to him about what your needs are. Being that I do a lot of mobile D.J. work and needed something scalable, that’s why we chose the dv12. For large events I array 2 of them in an inverted array. If I had the money I would buy 4-6 of the at212/at312 as well!!!

I wish I could compare those vs21 to my ls2100pb yorkville, although I believe the bassboss are way more efficient
ben riv I would love to get them side by side for a comparison! Still trying to find someone local to me willing to put it to the test. These are monsters. They play way deeper then the Yorkvilles. (-3db @ 25hz) - we sold our yorkville ls808’s to purchase this system.

Really depends what you are trying to accomplish- I’ve done a 600 capacity club with the exact same system in this video and it was amazing- that was with serious volume for dance music- if you are doing something like jazz music or something light I would say much much more- in this video we covered a huge area of the park with clean clear sound- you could have fit a few thousand people in that space.

I've just recently found out about these boxes. I've been a mobile for over 25 years and have fallen in love with the QCK K-series stuff over the past years for their quality and sound. As a mobile who mainly does wedding receptions, usually two K-12's are plenty for my gigs, but I won't lie that I often find myself wanting more low end out of them and/or pushing them to limit trying to get more punch out of them. I'd be interested in hearing a side-by-side of the DV12's (in full range mode) up against a K-12 or K-12.2. 95% of my gigs I don't take a sub to. I'd love to hear the DV12's.
OnMike'sMind hey Mike! I would love to get a fair side by side on them if you are local to me! The qsc’s and the dv12’s do have a much different response to them- the dv12’s aim to be as close to flat as possible, where the qsc’s have a significant boost around 80hz and from about 3-5khz. The dv12’s can out perform the k12’s but may not have the same “Smily face eq” that you are used to hearing. I do especially prefer the dv12’s at higher volumes as the flat response really keeps theses speakers pleasurable even right at the top of their volume. No harshness at all- just clean clear wonderful flat response.

Honestly, the QSC's top or subs don't hold a candle to these, especially at high volume. But you could get the new RCF 932A for $1299. They're flat, clean and no limit light all night and the RCF stuff sounds better than QSC any day. Bass Boss stuff runs nice and flat, bottom to top including their subs. Worth the money if you can swing it. Most subs at +/- 3db where most of us play ( including the QSC KS118) can only reliably manage 50hz and higher. For the money something like the BassBoss DJ18S goes all the way down to 27hz at +/- 3dB. That's BASS that you feel vibrating your teeth and will make ceiling panels fall down if not properly secure lol. Go hear the BassBoss DJ18S at guitar center and your eyes will be opnened. Worth the extra $1500 vs $2000 for a QSC KS118.

We have yet to get a good clear and thorough outdoor and indoor test of an arrayed dv12 Pair vs an at212- we pick which setup to use based on desired coverage - they have a very different dispersion and throw- working on getting a good side by side comparison and when I do will post a link- thanks for watching!

What does impress me is the Galaxy S9 camera audio quality (and to a lesser extent the now-stereo XS.) The S9 is one of the best as far as smartphones go, not as good as the Canon tho!. That thing is ridiculously good for onboard audio recording.!!!
djlobb I’m an apple guy through and through- I hate the things i need windows for, but can’t see myself moving to an android phone at any point. Possibly an external mic for the cannon may be a possibility though, although you are right it does a pretty good job- we also have a zoom q2n that records awesome stereo audio- but doesn’t do video as well as the cannon- a friend just picked up their newest version in 4K so I’m curious to see how that one works

But still, I don't thnk any phone can compare to a dedicated video camera's generally larger, more dynamic microphones :-) This set up is beautiful btw! W.A.B mobile entertainment agree completely- love the feel of faders- been using the m32 iPad mic app a lot though and there’s a few things I actually prefer using it for. Mixing monitors is actually a bit easier using the iPad as opposed to the M32r(not used on this gig) the M32r has one less bank of faders so you have to switch between banks. The iPad app simplifies it and makes it simple to bring up all the sends for the different aux outs

The question is....how much do you need to charge for a production setup to make this create a revenue stream....those subs don’t come cheap....how do you upsell something like to to pay for the expensive gear.
Maybe money Wash. Here in México theres a Lot of guys that come from nowhere and from a day to another the have truck. Lots i mean LOTS of PA and lights. And yes we all Say Wtf ???
dantonliam we financed the system over a 5 year period. In our market, one full system (8 subs 4 tops) rental covers 1 month payment- so anything more than that is revenue - we’ve been fortunate that it has made a name for itself and is currently seeing a lot of use!

Unfortunatly almost 90% of the people hire cheap "DJ's" or low Quality chinesse speakers. Just telling you my friend, i have a full top Yamaha active rig. Quality lights and i have been in the bussiness since 20 Years ago.
These days are dark, one and another guy comes whit super cheap $ 200 dlls A PAIR chinesse Crap speakers, a laptop and a $ 50
Dlls set of lights to take our Job to the Point that people think that a "Dj " is a cheap guy who puts músic trought RUclips in your parties.

Gavo Santiago the vs21 subs are $3995 we own 8 of them, the Dv12 are $2995 each we own 4, and In the last 2 years we have added 4 at212-3k at a cost of $3895 each- but you get what you pay for. We have run these speakers wide open weekend after weekend without any hiccups and they still sound just as amazing as day 1.
Qcs 12.2 for monitors ?
We ran 2 qsc k12.2 and 2 Yamaha dsr112 for monitors on this show. We own a bunch of ev zlx 12’s and 15’s also that see a lot of monitor duty although those definitely don’t have the same kick as the k12.2- qsc’s do require a good amount of eq on them to really get them loud without feeding back, especially under a tent like this
I am happy with my cerwinvega subs and peavey 18 as mid lows and peavey or powerd subs 12-15 tops… if i had the money i would try them but then again i always run a three way system and for me its all about quality with half less and where you hear it balanced any where you stand! But I hear it dull and kinda harsh on the 1-6 k… i love making any band sound better then what they really sound! But good job and best of luck comrade!

With all that expensive equipment you have, I am hoping you have a SPL meter ?? It would have been great to see some reading, especially at 400 feet and at 1 m in front of the DV12's.
3dcsheldon we do have an spl meter but it’s a cheap one and I don’t believe it to be very accurate- I am looking to get into smaart by rational acoustics and would trust a calibrated rta/spl mic much more- I will try to get a reading and on video for the next outdoor event. Dj Jest Jamm the vs21 subs are monsters! I run the subs around half way when running 4 subs with 2 tops. Outdoors a little bit more. I do run out of top before I run out sub in this configuration. These tops do put out a lot more than you would expect from such a tiny box though! We just ordered 4 At212-3k dual 12” tops to scale our production up for much larger events. The at212 play to 136db sustained output. They will cover us for much larger events and crowds. The dv12’s will still get plenty of use though!!! They are amazing tops! Even right below the limiter (and even with a little flicker of the limit light) they still sound crystal clear and are not harsh in any way. If you can I would suggest getting a listen of them!

Alex Martinez the Yamahas I do not own and we’re provided by t Productions who hired me on for supplemental sound. They aren’t bad speakers for the money but I don’t think it’s apples to apples on a comparison. The dv12’s are a much better speaker - have a much wider coverage and a much longer throw. Max spl they may be close but the dv12’s do a much better job of it without ever sounding harsh. They also play waaaaay lower in full range mode. I guess the final thing I could say is that the company that owns the Yamahas is awaiting the arrival of their own pair of dv12’s- so they heard the difference and made the switch.

I don’t mind the iPad if I’m doing just straight Dj but when I’m doing live sound I’m the same as you man out front snake it up I’m still the old-school I run some Yorkville myself but I don’t like there base bins at all I run the new Cerwin Vega 21” Driver these things pound sorry I have to say I’m not really a big fan of baseboss because you cannot compare these Vegas to that at all, yeah the Vegas are expensive but it’s worth every penny and they’re huge but they’ll put you in your ass and you feel it big time folded horn’s are the only way to go I run six aside LOL all crown power Nice rig

my gopro hates heat it will shut it's self off within 15 minutes let me say it this way it is either the circuts or the card it's self that does not like heat not to sure witch one in fact i got a show this weekend outdoors we will see how it does.
W.A.B mobile entertainment good to know. Definitely going to look into heat being a factor. It was certainly hot enough that day. Used the exact same camera and memory card this past Saturday without any kind of issue, and the ambient temperature was much lower.

VS21 is better than TH118?
Sound Back I haven’t heard the TH118 in person to have an accurate opinion on it. Some differences that can be noted from the published specs on both:
the Vs21 is powered and processed. No need for an amp or separate crossover.
The th118 plays down to 37hz@-4db and the vs21 plays to 25hz @-3db. According to the specs on danley’s website, the th118 is already at -10db when it gets to 29hz.
Max sustained and peak output listed on both are within 1db of each other and we don’t know what frequency Danly took that reading at- it may be at a higher frequency than you would use in a sub.
Dimensions and weight wise they aren’t too far off, the vs21 being heavier by 20lbs but also having the amplifier inside.
I would be confident to put them side by side for some testing!
Seeing the graphics on the danley page and the bassboss graphics, the bassboss sounds harder and deeper but the danley at more than 30hz sounds louder

Sound Back the Danley seems to get really loud above 100hz. That’s outside of the range I use my subs in. Again I’m a firm believer that hearing is believing, and would love to get them side by side for a comparison!
The bassboss sound louder at lower frequency, but the danley after 35hz sounds louder and until 50hz they become really loud
