finally: the Sigma cameras are the best, particularly with their dynamic range... their only disadvantage is: no mechanical shutter, no IBIS,,, but you can compensate the missing IBIS by increasing the Iso due to the big FF sensor
Good video.....But for me ...simple "street fun " I love my pair of old Sony A7s bodies...There is just something about those large 12 mega pixels...JPegs rock (if you know what your gear can do...LOL...I agree the PenF bodies are great (I have owned one three times). Mein Kommentar leider nur in Deutsch, but I am sure, you can translate it. Sensationell. SIGMA wird total unterschätzt.
I totally agree on this review. Then again I am switching slowly totally to the m43 cameras, the files it produces are really organic and real and not hyper-clear like many others are, especially full frame like my Nikons, the m43 is a great system that really needs to be promoted more and dedicated to small portable cameras...
I had a Fuji X100T, then an XT4, sold them and ended up with a Sigma FP which I love. The image quality is superb (I usually shoot raw). For me it really needs the (expensive) EVF, also I bought a cheap but excellent hand grip (Niceyrig). I take it on every road trip and the sharpness and colours are superb. I would love to get an FP-L one day.
For Olympus and OM Systems if you shoot raw the color wheel is in the Olympus and OM Systems software. So you can just load up your raw files and load in the preset and get your jpegs really fast. I know Panasonic and Nikon you can load in LUTS don't know if its as customizable as Olympus and OM Systems?
I have the fp L and have been primarily shooting DNG, only using the monochrome jpg. I’ll try some of the color modes and see what I come up with. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@qp733 started with a GX9, thought I wanted a big boy camera so traded for S1R. Hated it, too heavy. Loved the form factor of fp L and Contemporary lenses. Only one camera.
Yeah Pen-F. Love mine. It's a classic. I don't get the "it's micro four thirds...don't turn off the video" comment. Are there really people out there who think it's a full frame sensor or nothing at all? If so, these are NOT real photographers, they are just tech gear heads pretending to be photographers.
I have the first Sigma DP2, I think the colors sometimes are nicer, I have film cameras that I continue to use with their full frame look and real film colors; but my Fujifilm X100S is simply perfect for me, how it feels, how it makes me shoot, it's a whole new experience. The cost doesn't matter much because each camera that gets commented on social apps or here on RUclips then get more expensive so the "cheap" turns into expensive anyways.
I find that almost any effects or simulation can be achieved in post. If you are going to adjust images digitally.,it doesn’t matter if it’s in or out of the camera. It’s the result which matters
Agree, and Sigma PhotoPro is often overlooked for editing Sigma dng file, it retains the integrity of sigma dng (even when colour profile is turned off), you will never get Sigma tonality from Adobe software, even though LR or PS are much much more faster than PhotoPro.
Professional Nikon hater here, but you can actually use the Nikon Picture Control Editor and get all types of simulations and profiles and load them to cameras as old as the D700. I wonder if it would work with the Coolpix-A though.
Beware of option paralysis with many of these. Standard Olympus jpeg color choices are great and can be very filmlike. Who doesn't tweak their jpegs a bit in post anyway? Or filmscans for that matter.
The Sigma FP is L-mount right ?! One of the things that always spiked my interest to it was the mount, because I already have some L-glass. 24-105mm and the 50mm. Hmmm...
I am wondering why no one talking about Canon User Defined Picture Style, it give basically very very good & details color grading option if you use EOS Picture Style app on computer. You have Curve Adjustment, you have Selective Color (RYGCBM + HSL), you even have Color Mapping & Replacement. You literally can build any film simulation with a majority of Canon body even with the legendary 5D Classic which is about 20 yo now. EOS M or EOS R bodies are small and light weight also.
as someone who has had fuji cameras and the sigma FP i'd argue the early cameras xtrans 1 & xtrans 2 cameras colors & jpegs certainly hold their own against both these cameras. i liked the sigma FP a lot ! but i will say in my own personal experience ( maybe i had a faulty one ) but when i'd shoot jpeg i could see the colors being crushed. I've always wanted the Pen - F for some reason to afraid to go MFT.. above all else its a great video and i'm even considering buying the FP again and giving it a go!
Is there a guide anywhere to some nice colour profiles you can set on the pen-f? I've tried looking around but I couldn't find anything decent, and I also suck at colour science myself so I have a hard time making nice looking profiles
I started with Ricoh GR3 and with the new firmware update have customized the film simulation and honestly, I like it, granted they are not as good as Fuji X100V. Still for its price I feel GR3 is expensive. So paying double the amount for Fuji doesnt make sense. I also have an olympud omd-em10 mark2 and the bokeh is very good on that.
I like Fuji’s philosophy but Fuji’s cameras somehow don’t match their philosophy hardware and usability wise. Imo, surprisingly a few cameras from other makers are more cut out for what I understand as Fuji’s philosophy. I used to use x-t4 and x-pro2, now I use ricoh Gr ii.
My Olympus em10ii is my daily driver along with my Ricoh GRDi for B&W shots. I also love the Oly E300 and f2 macro combo. All these cameras take incredible jpegs. I have a ton of cameras but these 3 are my most used ones.
I have an Olympus OM-D EM10 MarkII and it have a color creator feature built into the camera that I believe is what you are describing. Very cool feature !!!
Ultimately I found that Olympus camera incredibly frustrating. I loved the 4:3 aspect ratio. The menu system was appalling. Its autofocus system was very prone to error particularly in low light. And yet I took some absolutely amazing photos with it. In the end I sold it and put the money towards a Fuji X100V.
@@colinstock325I do agree but you do get used to the menu system over time. For the money, Olympus has the best colours and lenses. Too bad the autofocus struggles in low light. I shoot high iso, f4 and manual as I don’t mind the grain. There is also flash when appropriate.
@@gullintannithe OLY EM10 mkii punches well above its price. It’s a great lightweight everyday carry and can be customised to your film techniques. Couples with the small primes like the Lumix 20mm f1.7 it’s just like using a 35mm Film rangefinder camera of the 1970’s.
I am huge fan of Olympus and M43 format and I used it for many years. As well as I am Fujifilm user for many years. And even I like the M43 so much, the jpeg output from the bodies are nowhere near the final quality of Fujifilm SOOC jpeg. Olympus is no competition here. Fuji doesn't have rivals in this area. Their jpegs and film simulations are top notch, even better than Canon, Ricoh and Leica jpegs. And I just mentioned the best...
Luke i couldn't agree with you more.So many people just fall under the spell of the current wave of popularity of a device instead of what the use of these things are for. They are meant to create art, not as a status symbol to be seen holding. Thanks for the reminder. I myself are not immune to such spell.
I have a PenF and I have Fuji cameras. I wouldn't say the PenF is better than the Fuji JPEG, but almost on par. I think Fuji edges it simply for using a better sensor. I find the PenF goes more after Kodak films while Fuji goes more after Fujifilm's (for obvious reasons). That said, Fuji has incorporated some kodak-esque aspects and unlike the PenF< The Fuji JPEG engine can simulate GRAIN which the PenF can only do for B&W. Not that the OM Systems Olympus E-P7 has the same controls of the PEnF for JPEG simulations, and actually they cleaned up the UI nicely - it's actually better in usability. I do still consider for very hard to quantify reasons the PenF output itself a notch higher better than the EP7's. Maybe the PenF used a slightly "picked higher quality" sensor from the bin.
I am going to,say that Olympus Pen F (and the Pen E7 , not featured here) are really attractive looking cameras! The ability to customize the jpg colors in the Olympus and what Sigma has going on with their picture profiles seems like quite the secret that has been kept about these two cameras.
I used to have a Fujifilm camera for a year, and I expected miracles from the JPEGs, but to my disappointment, there were no miracles. For decent photos 90% of the time post processing is required. Now, I am a happy owner of Panasonic S9, which was advertised with a LUT button as its key feature. I've spent a hell lot of time to learn and upload dozens of LUTs into the camera and adjusting them, but eventually I simply gave up: chasing the perfect in-camera JPEG is impossible, and just a waste of time. I take picturs with a profile which is the closest to the real world, and apply nifty, fantastic, gorgeous, cool-looking, astonishing, jaw-dropping profiles in Lightroom. No in camera image can come even close to the flexibility and performance of tools like Nic Collection 7 or similar packages.
Perfect JPG is impossible, a recipe or LUT kinda works best in some specific conditions. You are wishing something that only an AI can do, you ll have to wait for the future then
I have a question about the SIGMA fp. I am looking at options for an external SSD to use with the SIGMA fp I've recently purchased. In your December 12 blog article (your initial review of this camera), you recommend using the Crucial X9 Pro, but this is not listed among the compatible SSD's at the SIGMA website. Have you been successfully using the Crucial X9 Pro with the SIGMA fp?
Hi! Yes, I have been using the Crucial X9 with my FP, and to my knowledge, it is fully functional. I used it yesterday to record some All-i 4k UHD footage with the FP. I don't shoot in RAW (just not my style), so I can't speak to the compatibility with the RAW format, but from my experience, I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work. The SSD is very fast and it has the read/write speeds necessary for RAW.
@@LukeTaylorPhotography Excellent! Good to hear. Online research has led me to the conclusion that the Crucial SSD's are especially good and I am glad you can confirm that they work with SIGMA cameras. Thank you.
4:40 With fuji’s WB matrix you can do the same. Plus fuji has the dr400 mode that gives you 3-5 stops of highlight detail, tone curves for hilight/shadow falloff and monochrome tint. All together on their unique xtrans sensor which resolves noise in a film like grain. Theres a reason why fujis are flying off shelves.
I had Pen-F but sold it because I didn’t like the JPEG color coming out of the camera. I shoot mainly in JPEG and I enjoy Fujifilm’s film simulation. PEN-F is a beautiful camera but it’s heavy for a small sensor camera, the control was not intuitive to me. It just wasn’t for me😢
I love my Olympus Pen F so I haven’t had the care for Fujifim yet.😄I try the Fujifilm from my friend and didn’t like the view electronic finder, it’s very low res compared to the Pen F
The FP is a total sleeper for image quality if you want to shoot slow and deliberate artsy stuff, and like shooting JPGs. The issues that led to me parting ways with it though, are important to consider- Native lens options are pretty slim, at least when it comes to autofocus. Most of those native lenses are huge, making the small size of the camera itself totally pointless. The autofocus is basically useless, compared to great in the later Fuji cameras. Finally, the EVF is an expensive and clunky add-on... Having the option to go small and withut the EVF is nice, but when you want to use it, it massively changes the size and handling of the camera. Minor footnote, but the battery life was abysmal and charging speeds also not great. At least the batteries are tiny and cheap?
could you recomand a camera that has feature close to that of a flagship smartphone. I mean magnification, stabilization, video recording, outofocusing etc. Basically a device with same photovideo capability without lte connectivity. thanks
I think it's good that you don't want to spend a lot of money on certain Fuji fetish cameras, but also, the Ricoh GR are not exactly cheap cameras. In addition, both camerasm Ricoh GR and Fuji X100 have fixed lenses and a hidden sensor and a questionable seal, so if the sensor gets dirty you should take it to a technical service and many users have reported this problem. For me it is essential that a camera can eventually show me its little thing, the sensor.
That's fair. I picked up the Ricoh a few years ago, when the used prices were around $600. It definitely isn't as big of a value today. All cameras are getting pricey.
My most expensive camera (Sony A7) is actually the worst if it comes to jpeg. My Fuji X100 (original) I like best. Been to a museum (Terug in de Tijd/ Back in time) where they o.a. had an original Olympus PEN (film).
It depends on what you are shooting. Mft has unparalleled reach for wildlife, exceptional macro capabilities, and how about portability? If you don't need a global shutter and super shallow dof, I don't see why you would ditch mft. That being said, if I had the cash to spare, I would love an X T4 or Nikon ZF being a sucker for retro look and ex Nikon shooter.
That is not really how Fujifilm custom settings work. Yes you can use the film sims as a base to start from but you can customize every element of them as well as the cameras controls. If you just want a baseline sim to start from provia is basically neutral or close enough that it makes no functional difference. but still i really do not get the appeal of going thru the same effort of honing the jpeg before hand than being locked into one or two options instead of just shooting raw and putting in as much or as little effort after the fact. Unless u are in a situation where the client is going to take the memory card at the end of a shoot, why lock yourself into a limited set of jpeg looks when u have the raw to go back to if u end up hating the baked in look after? Maybe it is because i came in to photography in the shift from film to digital and had equal experience of developing both in the dark room and on the computer that they feel the work flow is just pare for the course. Digital development feels like half the art of it to me, but i guess i can respect those who can really commit to a look ahead of time. I just know i can't be one of them.
This trend with x100iv...... Its very diferent cameras, yes more or less all mirrorless cameras picture quality as good as x100iv especially looking on small screens, x100iv is just special set of features which no other camera has and that's it. And other cameras not comparable because they will not have same features.. They can make pictures that be as good but nobody cares about that.
Better?? really. I don't think so. I suspect you are going for clicks. I had the Olympus OMG-EM1. Loved it. 20 film simulations on the VI means you pick one as your base and you are 80% to your look. You can tweak slighly for the 20% for your style/taste. Built in ND filter/leaf shutter with better flash speed sync. Huge community to find new looks. 40 Mega jixels... broski.. you b trippin.
The Sigma FP has nothing in its design and specifications to recommend it. It is too expensive, too slow and installing the accessories to make it more user friendly it becomes as big as a Pentax 6x7.
Panasonic G100 is a very compact with interchangeable lenses far more superior, I have Olympus and Sigma FP they are very capable cameras, particularly FP is full frame with high dynamic range
Hold on hold on, at 4:12 did you really say "there's Olympus' built in picture profiles that no one uses because they're not really that good" ??????? come on gimme a break, you may prefer the Sigma output, yes great but to suggest Olympus' built in profiles are not that good is just hogwash. finally: the Sigma cameras are the best, particularly with their dynamic range... their only disadvantage is: no mechanical shutter, no IBIS,,, but you can compensate the missing IBIS by increasing the Iso due to the big FF sensor
Good video.....But for me ...simple "street fun " I love my pair of old Sony A7s bodies...There is just something about those large 12 mega pixels...JPegs rock (if you know what your gear can do...LOL...I agree the PenF bodies are great (I have owned one three times). I was into m43 since its inception ...but lightweight full frame with a small lens out rocks it...Cheers
What was your motivation to shoot with fp L, could I ask? Do you shoot color with another camera? @jimtrotter4800
I am "by defolt" a Nikon shooter...but I enjoy even more to use my 2 Olympus cameras recently, besides small shirt pocket size Sony, 10x opt. zoom.
If Sigma implement the global shutter to the FPL then it will become a beast
That would be epic
Beware of option paralysis with many of these. Standard Olympus jpeg color choices are great and can be very filmlike. Who doesn't tweak their jpegs a bit in post anyway? Or filmscans for that matter.
The Sigma FP is L-mount right ?! One of the things that always spiked my interest to it was the mount, because I already have some L-glass. 24-105mm and the 50mm. Hmmm...
Yes, it is l-Mount.
I agree. I think the Fuji has the edge on the GR III, but the prices for fujifilm cameras has gotten ridiculous lol.
Thanks for the info… I wasn’t aware a similar feature existed on the em10 II.
That's really cool. PEN has been on my radar for a while.
But I feel like it's too much customization for most people.
Hello and thank you for the video, I have Sigma Fp-L and Olympus Pen-F too. I confirm your words, both camera are very special and wonderful result.
Thank you.

With fuji’s WB matrix you can do the same.
Just about every camera has a white balance matrix. That is not the same as what the Olympus is offering.
I always shoot RAW + SF on my Olympus cameras but rarely even look at the .jpg (except for monotone) Will give them a chance going forward.
Sigma fp and fp-l are also great for Astro photography (dng files)
Which do you love more? Ricoh GR III or Sigma FP?
Common man… the Pen F a sleeper?
I had Pen-F but sold it because I didn’t like the JPEG color coming out of the camera. I shoot mainly in JPEG and I enjoy Fujifilm’s film simulation. PEN-F is a beautiful camera but it’s heavy for a small sensor camera, the control was not intuitive to me. It just wasn’t for me😢
Do you have a X100VI?
Pen f is basically an x100v that tiktok hasn't paid attention too.
the Pen-F uses color profiles similar to Kodak. it is not possible to get kodak profiles on other brands.
do you know if the pen e-p7 has the same color profiles?
The fuji 5 gen prossesor is a game changer at jpeg
That sigma fp sensor is special
Excellent video.
could you recomand a camera that has feature close to that of a flagship smartphone. I mean magnification, stabilization, video recording, outofocusing etc. Basically a device with same photovideo capability without lte connectivity. thanks
A flagship phone with data turned off?
I think Canon advertises the Cano R50 for people that want the experience of their smartphones in photo and video.
I think it's good that you don't want to spend a lot of money on certain Fuji fetish cameras,
but also, the Ricoh GR are not exactly cheap cameras.
I main use an om1 for all my shots but unless 4/3rds comes out with something grand, I'm going full or medium this fall
Yeah agreed. I can't see myself buying any new m4/3 cameras or lenses unless they start innovating.
Anyone got a pen for recipe close to something like Kodak gold 200 or just a warm recipe for daytime shooting?
This trend with x100iv...... Its very diferent cameras, yes more or less all mirrorless cameras picture quality as good as x100iv especially looking on small screens, x100iv is just special set of features which no other camera has and that's it. And other cameras not comparable because they will not have same features.. They can make pictures that be as good but nobody cares about that.
Seems Sigma has upped their game. Sigma SD10 was terrible, so I sold it.
Pen-F is now super hard to find haha.
Thanks a lot
Better??
Everyone hated on the G100 when it first came out but I've heard a lot of people love it.
Sigma FP is $1500 and Sigma FP L is $2400, Pen-F is $800
Très intéressant
Unfortunately, the Pen f is way overpriced right now. $1200 U.S. Should be around $600 for a body in good condition.
M 4/3 ❤❤❤
I totally don't get all this hype on x100VI.
Sorry, could wait for the 4:34 long Ad for mens pants to run its course...
Sigma: best picture profiles
Sigma: ugliest camera in the known universe
Sigma fp have this size and construction for a purpose
I kind of like it… it’s a minimalist vibe lol 😆
re “ugliest”? really?? I find it the most beautiful one.. plain and simple.
Pen E-P7 is even better.
That camera looks cool. I just wish it had an EVF.
@@LukeTaylorPhotography For a photographer I understand, as a cinematographer I do not need it. What I really like is the color grading inside.
Olympus colour repro has always been superb.
The review part about the Sigma ist totally useless when you run through pictures like hell
These are not sleeper cams but niche cams
PEN-F is a sleeper? Are you kidding? Try buying one…
Jesus, get to the topic
Shhhh, mft is the trade secret.
Please don't get fp popular, I don't want get it back for more money 😂😂😂
Sigma only cons is no IBIS
No mechanical shutter and useless flash photography capabilities. But I love mine.
SIGMA FPL IS 2.5K FROM JAPAN, LOL
No. They are not better. Nice camera's, though.
Im sure its not pronounced reecoh
So why comment on something as trivial as a person's accent?
I believe it is pronounced Reechu, perhaps Ray-cuh, or maybe Reekachu
lol 2 k for a used pen f camera people are crazy. Time to get a new hobby
"sleeper" cameras🤦♂
nice try, goodbye
