BL adaptations like Guardian and Untamed worked because the director didn't add a female lead and stayed true to the original material. If you're adding a female lead, you're already in dangerous territory. The Untamed actually thought of doing that and fans shut that down real quick.
Bl is appealing to audiences because of the gay romance not often portrayed on television. Swapping the main male character and love interest into a female character can make people uninterested, as that kind of love has been shown often. It kind of makes some fans wonder what's the point of adapting Bl into a drama in the first place if they're going to change one of it's biggest themes, which is the Bl romance.

Can anyone explain to me, how did BL dramas ever get through the censorship board? I've been watching The Untamed now. It looks obvious gay love to me, and not just for the two leads. What exactly did they ever adapted? OK, they don't have sex scenes, but they hardly have any in boy and girl dramas either.

Sure they become more opened-minded towards LGBT but I'm not sure how that happened & in only one year (bc Guardian was taken down one year before). Because as you said, it's obvious WangXian are in love with each other in the serie...Maybe just because of money? Or there were fans among the censorship commitee xD

BL novels aren't about platonic relationships. Historically, yes, and only sometimes, but that was in the 70s. The BL we know today grew from that, plus parodies of shōnen manga, and became literal boy love romances. The only time BL is platonic is because of CENSORSHIP. Though with The Untamed, the writers did a REALLY good job with their romantic undertones and being able to get it past censorship laws.
I mean, you can take it as you see it. I didn't see a lot of romantic undertones because there is such thing as bromance without actual romantic love between two men. The Untamed is very much like Sherlock Holmes, because you have two unlikely people becoming as close as brothers. In fact, the way I describe the relationship between Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian is a line from the first Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ and Jude Law, which says "Brothers, not in blood but in bond." Brotherhood is such a powerful thing you see in movies, especially war films. It's so strong that it can last a lifetime. I don't see that as much with women, which is why having a close friendship with two male leads is such a great part of a show. I despise people dumbing down male relationships to base homosexuality. It cheapens the bond the male leads would have in a show. Romance is the story of how two become one, but having two characters who are different be completely loyal to each other for a lifetime is more like a chord of thick strings that can't be broken. Let's just abolish the phrase "boy love" and go back to bromance.
barbaro267 Nah, mate. I agree, bromance/male friendship is real, and yes sometimes people take shipping to the extremes. The Untamed and the novel it’s based on, Mo Dao Zu Shi, actually does have a romantic relationship between the two male leads. Now whether or not it’s visible in the live action, that’s hard to say, as they had the government censorship breathing down their necks. But even my mother, who is quite conservative, asked me after the finale if Lan Zhan is in love with Wei Wuxian. As for me, a BL fan of many years, the subtext is clear as day. Sometimes, we have to differentiate between “just friends with chemistry” vs “the directors are baiting BL fans” vs “actual gay couple”
Fact is: Mo Dao Zu Shi’s original Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian are romantically involved. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are canonically best friends.
I’m not gonna force you to see BL in the Untamed, as I accept the work has been adapted from the original. But it would be great if people can accept the very real possibility of it, and that a gay couple can have a love story as epic as the usual straight couple we see in movies.

I would agree with you on some points; fans do tend to make a love interest where there isn't one between two males who are close, Sherlock and Watson being only one example. But Lan Zhan and Wei Ying ARE actually a couple. The original story, Mo Dao Zu Shi, does not hide that. They even get married. And if you want to deny that to yourself to feel better, that's your choice. But I hate when fans want to deny a deep, strong love just because its between two men. Your arguement can easily be turned the other way. Just because they did not kiss, hold hands, or have sex (which they did in the novel) does not mean the love between them was not VERY obvious in The Untamed. In a bromance two men do not look at each other like that, they do not walk away or turn their back on everything and their family for a bromance. Wei Ying specifically said, that as long as he had Lan Zhan he didn't need anything or anyone else. He settled down in the one place he would NEVER choose for himself (The Cloud Recesses) simply because it's where Lan Zhan wanted to be and he would never ask Lan Zhan to leave his family for him -- even though he knows Lan Zhan would, he already did once. So, while yes bromance is a definite real thing, so is an epic and deep romantic love between two men. Their bond was beautiful and the actors of the The Untamed did an amazing job at showing that with a censorship standing in there way. You say don't disrespect a bromance; well also don't disrespect a "true boy love". How about we get rid of the term "bromance" instead, since it feels like it was coined by homophobes who just want to make themselves and others like them feel better. You see two guys who are best friends and seem just a bit too close and you get scared, when the truth of the matter is it is completely possible they could be more than just friends. Suck it up and get over it.
The Untamed (Mo Dao Zu Shi) was revolutionary. I can't wait for Heaven Official's Blessing, the novel is absolutely amazing.

Welcome to the BL world. I have been watching BL dramas for maybe 10 years already. It's a very interesting genre but sometimes it's hard to find the good ones (usually the budget for production for such a genre isn't as big! >.

I was looking forward to this but sadly dissapointed cuz they added the girl. However The Untamed was also (rumored) going to add WenQing as a main character before the release, fans noticed and said they will not support the movie anymore if they add WenQing as the main char.
One of the reasons why the Untamed has me obsessed is that, it beautifully portrays the relationship and lifelong bond between two soulmates in love without explicitly needing to show it (though of course, I wish at least a hug could have been shown. lol) This is what even some guy/girl pairing dramas seem to lack, oftentimes rushing to intimate scenes or showing excessive amounts of them, while failing to cultivate (heh) the closeness of bond between the main characters. The chemistry between Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo as Wei Ying and Lan Zhan is also pivotal for having perfectly portrayed this closeness.
I don't think I will ever get over this drama nor do I plan to. I haven't felt the same for other romance dramas since the Untamed. lol I am usually not a BL/yaoi person and dislike explicit content in anything, but I ended up reading the novel after the drama. 😊 It's hard to say if other upcoming BL dramas will give a similar feeling.
Yes exactly my thoughts! The drama is crazy good because the cast and crew were passionate about it. It shows. They all took a very serious approach on it and made a really good novel even better :)

I'm just gonna go ahead and get this SHALLOW STATEMENT off my chest: none of these actors are anywhere near as hot as the dudes playing Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian.
The Untamed was a gorgeous, aching, and uplifting love story... but it was also, quite importantly, a showcase for two actors who were absolutely fine as FUCK in their roles and looked so good together AND both possessed the perfect balance of masculine and feminine beauty. I've been desperately hoping for a new BL show to replace that X factor and have yet to find it.
Like. Do y'all know what I'm talking about? They both have this elegant, delicate, extremely youthful flowerboy look BUT with strong undercurrent of masculinity, too. Pardon my extreme thirst.

the thing with the untamed is that they really escaped the niche of bl consumers,, even me, a person who isn’t into bl novels or dramas of any kind. the plot line & the epic love story between wwx&lwj were so good and so well portrayed (despite censorship) that is gonna be hard for another adaptation to replicate the same level of success but we'll see
and the two lead guys were so pretty and feminine.....more beautiful and feminine than women.

Honestly I can accept that bl is potrayed as close friendship because of China's censorship issues. Changing a character to female or a new female love interest (& changing the script poorly) is a big no-no.

I don't think that's considered censorship, that's homophobic in essence. That's what happens when a homophobic production buys IP in the BL genre trying to correct them. (They most probably did it for the benefits too, knowing the true fans are going to remake it one day and that they can sue for compensation later on) I usually just assume no such drama when they do that. Add new girl character or change the characters to girl. Not going to get my views instead they will get my critics. They could have pay a BG wtiter and make a masterpiece with that money, but they decided to "correct" people's interest by disgusting them. Well done.

I just finished the novel "Mao Dao Zu Shi" and I have to say that, for my personal taste, "The Untamed" is a wonderful adaptation (there are even some things that I liked more there). Despite the strict censorship this drama totally crosses the "bromance" line. I could feel how the love between the two protagonists grew up through the episodes, and even without the kisses, sex or the explicit love confessions you can clearly see that the feelings they have for each other are more intenses than a close friendship.
I don't like when the adaptations change the gender or add another character to play the love interest, because for me that's the easy way to avoid censorship. I appreciate when the director and writers are able to maintain the essence of the original things and at the same time avoid the censorship rules just like "The Untamed" did.
I expect the same good work for the other adaptation drama based on the same writer of Mao Dao Zu Shi.
Anyway, even if I'm not going to watch them, I wish the best for all the upcoming dramas, because they all require hard work from the cast and crew.
@Purple Heart I totally agree with you. The boy who played Lan Zhan did a wonderful job... and all the cast and crew, by the way. The good and hard work of all of them is what made me love the story and the characters.
After reading the novel...I can't look at Xiao Zhan the same...cause Wei Ying....is one crazy nympho while Lan Zhan is just a subtle nympho.

Some of these won't work like The Untamed because of the need to replace one of the main male lead with female, and people won't like that. What made the untamed work of was they didn't add a female love interest and they showed emotion toward the two protagonists without crossing censorship lines. All of the cast had chemistry. I hope they actually look at The Untamed, and see what the fans saw. The Untamed SHOWED THE LOVE BETWEEN THE TWO MEN. AND THAT IS THE KEY IN BL. these shows are more Bromance then BL. Bromance is an entirely different genre.

BL is not platonic at all. Adaptations are, because you know, china's censorship laws and the homophobic market make it a requirement for anything to be greenlit. Sadly most of these shouldn't even be called BL dramas because they make no effort to keep the original intent of the story, unlike guardian and the untamed. I believe that you can go a long way with subtext if censorship forces you to. What I think most of these drama are is a cash grab, attempting to follow the success of something that, unlike them, genuinely seemed to care for its source material. I understand omitting some scenes and censoring nsfw parts, but straight up changing the gender of the protagonists is disgustingly disrespectful to the work they're trying to make money off of in the first place.
I agree with all you have said. Especially that it is incredibly disrespectful to the source material. And, like, also.. to gay people in China and all over the world. They exist, probably very unhappily in some places, and it's very sad that they don't even get their love stories told.

Well it's good to see that China producing more BL series. Though The Untamed is a huge success ànd give courage to producers and directors to produce more BL series, for me it's always Addicted that bring me in BL. Sad though not so many people know about it because of damn banning. It's really worth watching. And also I hope Chinese sensory board will more open minded and don't terminate any show in the middle of airing.

@@haylzz_myfaceu9980 the HIStory series (although it's Taiwanese) are also BLs on Viki! i recommend everyone to go watch all of it because all of it's so good!!! however, i would recommend starting with HIStory 3 and then moving on to 2 and 1 since it's the newest and more developed than the others.

Dissecc you’re right. I knew Yibo before the drama was released and I hadn’t even read the novel yet. I guess my judgment on his impression of lwj couldn’t be taken too seriously HOWEVER after reading the novel and rewatching the drama, I still love Yibos version of lwj too. He may be a little different but he’s still a wonderful impression of the character. It’s all down to the abilities of the actor and their connection and commitment to the role. I ought to be a little less picky and judgmental tbh

"The Untamed" is the show which brought me in chinese tv shows. I dont know anything about the actors or show mentioned in the video other than untamed. But i loved the untamed so much that now i m planning on watching these shows too. I m actually excited😁🎊🎊

Bl was famous all the time, it went crazy with the series Addicted (Addicted Heroin) which had 10 million views on the first episode when it aired. Unfortunately, then China banned the series and canceled the second season (even banned the main actors from being in the same place at the same time), then they banned BL productions that is why all BL projects inspired from BL novels became bromances/friendship in the series. "The Untamed" is from a BL project and people knew the novel but can clearly see that the series was not direct at all with the main characters' relationship.
A lot of BL projects have violence, abuse, death, and sad ending if they clearly portray a gay couple, I can't even give an example of a recent project with a gay couple that has a happy ending and no violence.

Also that is why even with "Addicted" in the beginning people asked the production to make the second season with a Thai production team and film it there. Recently there were roumors that Taiwan will rebute the series all new cast but the same story.

Honestly, I am only waiting for Heaven Official's Blessing, it's equally as amazing as Grand Master of Demonic Cultivation and their author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, she does an amazing job creating their very different worlds. If HOB gets turned into an drama.... I might die of joy, but for now I only know of the Donghua.

Definitely can’t wait for PRIEST series and Heaven’s Official Blessing (TGCF). I hope and prays for the rumors for the two main leads for TGCF - especially if it is XuKai and Luhan, wow to die for seeing them as the two leading males. As for 2HA - I know the script will be tone down heavily since it is 18+R novel to became with. Hopefully they can bring close enough storyline to the book.
I am actually hoping it's not Luhan. I'm not sure about Xu Kai since I have seen his dramas before and his acting is okay but I am scared of watching Luhan act after Fighter of Destiny (Mixture of bad script is at fault) but I had some slight drama afterwards and haven't been able to watch his new works. however, I am all for it if he has improved!

The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty is my favorite of these dramas so far. Production value is great, cinematography is great, action scenes are great, and most importantly, the chemistry between the two male leads (Tang Fan and Sui Zhou) is effortless and natural. The show understandably puts more emphasis on friendships and there's a pseudo 'love story' between one of the main male leads and a female character, but the hints are still there in terms of the original romance between the two male leads. Their relationship is treated as the heart of the show.

The novel for Heaven Official's Blessing was soooo good!! Xu Kai is always a good choice for me because his eyes just draw me in and makes me feel whatever he is feeling; I've been a fan since Yanxi Palace. However, I don't know if he has the range to pull off Hua Cheng. I see Hua Cheng as a strong roguish character with silent, wild sex appeal. While Xu Kai is sexy, it's more tame than Hua Cheng. If they got Vin Zhang and he mixes his characters from "The King's Woman" and "I Will Never Let You Go", it would be the perfect Hua Cheng!!!!
I read Vin Zhang and was like YES. I'm not familiar with the source material but Vin ZHang is sexy af and he's already done a BL ship before (Love 020 - KO & Hao Mei/ Mozhata)

I love this idea too. I only, hope it catches on in the West soon. While as a largely, Gay male myself, I would so, so, love to see the actual, romance side of this played up more, with more physical, closeness and tenderness being shown, anything along these lines helps, and helps to change the nature of relationships between men, and the importance of them, as well. I'm quite, excited and highly, supportive.
Just finished watching the Untamed today, actually, so that still, pretty fresh in my heart and mind. Really want to see Xiao and Wang in more future, Boy Love dramas together, in the future, soon. They were absolutely, awesome together.
The Immortals look absolutely, awesome to me. Can't wait for when this one comes out. How long will it take before these hit RUclips here, as those of us outside of China have no other way to see them.

The fact that Guardian was only mentioned at the end does not give it enough credit. If it wasn't for the cultural event it created, the conditions for all these other dramas wouldn't exist! It will always enjoy a special place in Chinese drama history. The memes and creative content it inspired will affect and even shape the scene in the years to come.
I don't think you give Addicted enough credit with this - so openly gay that it was pulled and caused an uproar. Guardian was so watered down it was literally only saved by the leads (and kudos to them.)

I agree with many comments in here: adding a female lead or female love interest will only ruin the storyline of BL-based dramas. If the novel is BL, make the show/movie bl or bromance. If the story was actually meant to have the regular hetero couple , then have it be the typical guy/girl pairing! Honestly, these directors are like stealing ideas from BL novels so they can make themselves a straight drama. Ruins it all and it’s disrespectful. I get it, censorship sucks, but if the directors want to make a storyline for a regular straight drama, then they should get their resources somewhere else. 🙄

Nah bro. Xiao Zhan has already sunk into the world's eyes as Wei Wuxian. It'll be weird for him to take on the persona of either Xie Lan or San Lang. Considering how popular TGCF is though, finding a good set of actors will be difficult.

for me chinese historical dramas are better than korean dramas in general but when it comes to modern dramas korean are the best but honestly after watching the untamed more than 10 times i srart getting into chinese dramas and i watch modern ones also and they re so good the story lines are almost close to korean like the casual cold richboy and cute crazy girl and blablabla hhahaha but when it comes to the quality and budget korean for the win

I read "Heaven Official's Blessing" just recently. I loved it! It deserves an excellent adaptation. I hope they can recreate that magic chemistry I've seen between the 2 leads in "Guardians": love is obvious and even expressed but they manage to stay within the boundaries of China's government sensorshiip. The actors did a magnificent job playing on that tigth rope. Xu Cai would definitly fit San Lan character😈.

My thoughts and prediction on these:
1) Forward Forever - Another prime example of what happens when BL changed to BG. The show was not popular, not many people watch it even though both Huang Zitao and Jackson Yee have large fanbases.
2) Winter Begonia - Given that this is one of Yu mama's work, the visual should be good, but he's been known to bring us the good, the bad, and the ugly. Andrew Yin is a very good actor, but he lack a role that will really make him breakout. This might be the one. I'm not a big fan of Huang Xiaoming and I'm curious why he picked up a BL work. Both Yin and Huang aren't newbie actors so from an acting standpoint, we will see some solid performances. I think this show may do well, but for it to gain in popularity like 'Guardian' and 'The Untamed', I'm not seeing it.
3) The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty - Could be a dark horse.
4) SPL - If I recalled correctly, this is also steampunk. But I kinda have a feeling that they going to remove that element and it is going to feel like every other historical adaptation. Dyla Kuo would do ok as the ML but, I think it will be hard to find a good fit for the MC.
5) HOB - Luhan fit the image of the MC very very well, but forget about Xu Kai, he's not in the image of the ML at all. Anyway, I doubt the two of them will pick up this piece. Despite the popularity of 'The Untamed' and 'Guardians', playing a BL IP is consider 'risky', especially if you already have an established background in C-ent....most people think BL is going 'backward' in your career.
6) Immortality - This is going to try to copy the success of 'The Untamed'. Most people knew why Arthur Chen picked up this project. With his family background, he will have no problem picking up filming projects, but he lacks fame and wants to become a 'traffic' actor so he's using a BL project as a shortcut to fame. Many of Leo Luo's fans were also surprised why he picked this up. There is no doubt that there is a lot of money behind this project and I think it will do relatively well. However, whether a show can really catches on 'fire' or not really depends on fate. It will be hard to follow the track of 'The Untamed' now especially because of the recent event that make people pay more attention to how capital intends to create 'traffic' stars by using means such as IP and BL.
7) Silent Reading - One of the more popular modern BL novel out there. It also have a huge fanbase and is probably one of Priest most popular book. There is no way this novel can be adapt into a drama if they stay true to the novel because in addition to the BL elements, it will also tick off half of the listed items on the censorship board. In order to adapt, they will have to make massive changes to the original plot. In addition, casting for the MC and ML be difficult. Feidu is one of the more loved character in the BL world and it is nearly impossible to cast for him. The only person that can play him can no longer play BL.
Lu Han is sure a great actor but imagine Song JiYang as Xie Lian. They both share this gentle vibe🥺
THE HUSKY AND HIS WHITE CAT SHIZUN OMG that book will tear up your heart and stomp on it just to put it back together and do it all over again. 10/10 recommend.
