What a voice! As famous as he was, he continued to play small county fairs where he would walk around and talk to audience members before the show. Very humble and genuine. R.I.P to a great, talented man.
I don't think there was a country singer more loved than Conway. Fantastic man and singer. He and Charley Pride were both very good ball players, top level.
My grandparents got to see that!!! Granny never stopped talking about it! I wish I could have been there! My Dad saw Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Jimmy Page play on stage all at once at the same time! I am so jealous of my grandparents and Dad!
I didn't get to see Merle...but I saw Conway Twitty, George Jones (who opened his show by singing "No Show Jones"), and Skip Ewing. No Merle, but still a great night. My supervisor was a fan of all 3, and it was the weekend of her birthday. I bought her a new gown, borrowed my friend's limousine and paid his nephew, took her to her favorite restaurant, and to the concert...couldn't get front row by the stage, but she was short and the center front row of the mezzanine was "perfect" for her. I wasn't brown nosing...she was my on-site supervisor but had no say as far as raises, promotions, etc...basically just a liaison between our company and our client company. She was a friend of my Mom, we were both fans, she had never been in a limo, and it was an opportunity for me to dress up nice and take the limo out and have good clean fun with someone who really appreciated it (as she was a single mother of two teens and rarely got anything for herself).
I cried my eyes out when Conway died. I was raised on his music and Loretta, and Tammy. I was stunned! Saw him and Loretta not long before he passed. Sad day, but I LOVE this song!
I saw Conway so many times and every show was amazing. I saw him was 2 months before he passed away. I cried for days. He was and is my favorite country artist of all time!
I have always loved this song, but this particular live version of it is my absolute favorite. I mean, did you see and hear the intensity in which he sang this, better than any of his recorded versions. It damn near brought a tear to my eye!
I had the Privilege to see Conway Twitty in 1958 at the age of 8 in Hamilton Ontario Canada where he actually wrote It`s Only Make Believe while in a restaurant bored to death, he wrote it in about 15 to 20 minutes, I was in a Yo Yo Competition at the York Movie Theater where I won and Conway was the singer, there was a Blonde Lady there also who sang with him but I don`t know who she was, Conway told the story of being bored and wrote a song just for us and then he sang it and because I won the Yo Yo Competition along with the 2nd and 3rd place he gave us our trophy, I got patches and a vest and he gave me a signed record, my brother took it, oh well. He sat me on his knee and told me that I did good with the tricks, typical tricks for an 8 yr old, back then, nothing like today but I will NEVER forget the gentle hug he gave me and a kiss on my cheek there must of been maybe 100 people in there because the theater was small. I was in Love, IF I only knew, but at 8 you don`t know the magnitude of this singer back then to me he was just a singer there who congratulated me, gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek and I got to sit on his lap, no security just a guy who sings. RIP Conway...Canada Loved you...

Conway is my mom's favorite artist, as a child I would get to attend his concerts and I always remember he stayed after every show and signed autographs for everyone who wanted one and that would take hours sometimes it seemed. Great artist.

Thanks Don! I requested this a while ago, but I knew it would come up eventually! I love Conway. He’s become in my top two singers of all time, and this is one of his iconic hits. I’m only 21 so I never got a chance to see Conway but I would give anything to see him live! He sounds the same as he does on his records. Thanks so much for the reaction! Keep up the amazing work.
In 1958 this was a Rock & Roll chart # 1. Twitty City was sold to The Trinity Broadcast Network about 2 years after Conway's Passing. Do to legal fight over his will & estate. They have a memory garden on the grounds to honor Conway. I am THANKFUL for you and your reaction Don like to watch you learn 😎😎
I love this song; its harmonies in the background are great, and Conway sings it as a long crescendo (moreso in the original than this later version), which was a rare thing for a singer to do - the only other great crescendo song I know of is 'Sound of Silence' by Disturbed. I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who thought this was Elvis when we were young and ignorant.
Very few singers have the dynamic range of Conway Twitty who had the ability to change the octave of his voice on the fly, something that is very difficult to do and takes great ability to hold and release the breath at certain cues during the song and then belt out the lyrics but still sound smooth. Conway Twitty retained his incredible voice throughout his lifetime and had many hit records and he is considered one of the all time greatest Country music musicians of all time. Dying much too young of a stomach aneurysm his music is still widely played on various radio stations and digital streaming media. Twitty was a contemporary of musicians like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and many other artists of that era whose music blurred the lines across several different music genres and the ones who eventually paved the way into what we know now as Rock & Roll music. Considered "riskee' in the 1950's, rock musicians were considered "Punks" by the older folks of that era who thought their music was poison to their children's ears. Rock and Roll music prevailed into the music we all enjoy today. RIP Conway Twitty. Your music will live on for generations to come as a lasting legacy of your incredible music. The cool thing about the invention of television and digital streaming media, the folks 500 years into the future will have an accurate depiction of what life was like 500 years before their births unlike our generation who only have moving and lifelike images from people who lived just 80 years ago. A very short time indeed. Before that, we, as human beings, had to "guess" what life was actually like as no video with voice exist before 1900 and really before the 1920's. The people 1,000 years from now or even well beyond that, will have accurate depictions and video of our era and all of the significant events of the time due to the ability to store all of these videos in digital format which theoretically can last forever, especially as new and emerging technology will eclipse our technology, yet all of our "DATA" can be upgraded or absorbed into the new technology in the future allowing the people of the future to view videos of our era. Pretty interesting to think about that and how much different their teachings will be due to having actual video of that era 1,000 years before. I have no doubt we will have travelled to other worlds by 1,000 years from now. Mars is just around the corner. Then, my guess, the moon of Europa. Then....................who knows.
I had the honor of meeting Conway down in Atlanta in the early 70's. He had come out of the Fox Theater and I got a picture of him. He died of an of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was a nice man.

"Twitty City" in Hendersonville was bought by TBN. Part of it was still a Conway Twitty museum. Sad story was that he didn't update his will and his kids and wife at the time.. lost out.
Conway wrote this song in my home town of Hamilton Ontario Canada around 1956. He was playing at the Flamingo Hotel under the name of Harold Jenkins at the time. He assumed his stage name after checking out a map. Conway Arkansas and Twitty Texas.
@Wayne Marston, Conway told the story at a live show: he knew "Harold Jenkins " wasn't a famous name but had trouble finding a name that wasn't his. He opened a map, closed his eyes, and touched it twice. Hence, Conway, Arkansas and Twitty Texas.
Conway was (still is) country music royalty. Has over 50 Number 1 records. Since you love steel guitar so much, you need to listen to Conway’s early country stuff. The great John Hughey was his steel player and was responsible for his “sound”.
If I'm not mistaken Don,I believe Conway did this song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand when it was a rock song. I would have been a little toddler back then, lol The only reason I knew about it was the fact that I seen it on youtube.

Not only is the mansion and gift shop shut down, they've closed down the pretty gardens and the painting of the Tweety bird that Conway had put there. Trinity Broadcasting now does weekly tapings of the Mike Huckabee show on site. And it seems most of the changes happened right around the time they started doing the tv show there. They have security cars patrolling all the time so you can't even drive through the parking lot without being followed. And it's a shame, the gardens of the mansion were very pretty w/ sculptures, fountains, benches. On the plus side, you can get free tickets to the Mike Huckabee show if you want. It looks like they have a nice variety of guests on the show.
Definitely a pop song! Especially since "pop" and "rock" pretty much meant the same thing until around 1967 (when rock started getting serious) Can't knock Conway for his doo-wop days or anything else...the man was simply a musical genius!
Rock & roll was definitely not pop. In the mid 50s pop was Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, etc. Rock was Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry.....
"Hello Darlin" is THE song by Conway Twitty but I would love to see you react to "Don't Cry, Joni" that he recorded with his young daughter. Beautiful song.
Conway Twitty is much more than just this song. One of the greatest voices in music ever. He had a knack for finding the right song, then knowing how to sing it. The Conway growl is legendary. He lives every song as he sings it. Each song he recorded was meant to touch the heart, and he accomplished that with ease. These are but a couple of reasons Conway Twitty was called " The Best friend a song ever had.". Just listen to a few songs and take in the feeling and emotion he puts into every song. For you dad's, try "That's My Job".
Can't go wrong with Conway Twitty! Everything he did was great. TIGHT FITTIN' JEANS and I'D LOVE TO LAY YOU DOWN are a couple of the more popular songs. Both good
In 2001 there was a girl named Jessica Andrews that had a song out called Who I Am, would be a good one for you, another reactor just did it, Use to be one of my favorites back then
You can't go wrong with Conway! It's pronounced "Ca-homa" located in the Mississippi Delta. Fun fact -- I was on the Rockabilly Highway this past Sunday. 😄
I wonder if this was shortly before his Death I know he had done a show at his theater in Branson Missouri he was on his tour buss after the road don’t know if they were headed home season over in Branson not sure if he died on his bus or if they made it to the Hospital. Can you Imagine doing something you love all the way up to the day you pass
Ya know....I was just thinking that his voice stayed solid up until the day he died; more times than not the aging can be heard, but not with Conway. Serious talent.
Dude it's called rockabilly. Look it up. Elvis was one of the first propenents of it. Many artists follwed him. Rock and roll, with just a wee touch of country. Let me know what you think about that.
Twitty City is now Trinity City. It is a shell of its original. TBN owns it and they have 2 auditoriums for speakers to be filmed. You have to look a certain way to get in. The preach "GIVE, GIVE, GIVE!" While the woman has had about 10 facial procedures because she has to look her best for the lord. The clothes, gilt chairs. It's a downright shame. Nothing even looks the same. There are no attractions, just a gift shop and the 2 auditoriums. All the rest gone. I have a picture of me and my Daddy riding camels at Twitty City.
Once a truck driver......His story is pretty amazing. In fact...he has a son who tried to fill his shoes a bit but it didn't work out (imo I didn't like him at all), but Conway DOES have a grandson (Tre or Tri....can't recall which) that does a much better job.
What a voice! As famous as he was, he continued to play small county fairs where he would walk around and talk to audience members before the show. Very humble and genuine. R.I.P to a great, talented man.
He has a signature growl in his songs. Makes all the girls' hearts go pitty pat.

Can't go wrong with Conway Twitty! Everything he did was great. TIGHT FITTIN' JEANS and I'D LOVE TO LAY YOU DOWN are a couple of the more popular songs. Both good
Loved him!
In 2001 there was a girl named Jessica Andrews that had a song out called Who I Am, would be a good one for you, another reactor just did it, Use to be one of my favorites back then
33 years 💞
You can't go wrong with Conway! It's pronounced "Ca-homa" located in the Mississippi Delta. Fun fact -- I was on the Rockabilly Highway this past Sunday. 😄
Tupelo Honey yes ma’me...hey Girl!
@@TexasMagnolia , great choice!
Great video reaction Glenn Campbell did an awesome version of this tune if you haven't already heard it
conway's lonely blue boy is a great rockabilly song
I wonder if this was shortly before his Death I know he had done a show at his theater in Branson Missouri he was on his tour buss after the road don’t know if they were headed home season over in Branson not sure if he died on his bus or if they made it to the Hospital. Can you Imagine doing something you love all the way up to the day you pass
My song in so many different ways
Ya know....I was just thinking that his voice stayed solid up until the day he died; more times than not the aging can be heard, but not with Conway. Serious talent.
Gone too soon...RIP.
he still sang it thesame way after 32 years
Don, Iris DeMent is the one John Prine chose to duet with on his song In Spite of Ourselves. Give it a listen.
Dude it's called rockabilly. Look it up. Elvis was one of the first propenents of it. Many artists follwed him. Rock and roll, with just a wee touch of country. Let me know what you think about that.
The one and only...
Definitely appreciate you doing some research into the artist.
Rainy Night in Georgia, by Conway and Sam Cook is nice.
He was extremely talented
Conway George and Merle are the 3 greatest artist ever in my opinion
Twitty City was sold to the Trinity Broadcasting Network, A Christian network. They renamed it.
conway is the best singer
Please rate "Hello Darlin'" by Conway
The Mavericks has a great Texas-Rockabilly sound.
OMG! I just love reading your comments! Lol we must be the same generation or close to it.....I forgot about The Mavericks🙃
Only one person or group that had more number one hits. Of all groups and of any kind.
Great song, fun trivia.
Once a truck driver......His story is pretty amazing.
In fact...he has a son who tried to fill his shoes a bit but it didn't work out (imo I didn't like him at all), but Conway DOES have a grandson (Tre or Tri....can't recall which) that does a much better job.
