Loretta has had like 9 songs banned from radio play...but every one of those became #1 hit sellers...because she writes and records what she feels, and doesn't care who likes it or who don't. People in Nashville say she may be "too real". She said it's the only way she can write. She's 89 and just released a new hit album STILL WOMAN ENOUGH. Her motto is "Never quit working. Never retire." because she loves writing songs. She has over 1,000 songs she hasn't even recorded!
Let's not forget how many "husbands" who didn't want to pay for divorce and spousal support had their wives commited to insane asylums so they could run off with Ms. Houchee Couchee ! My Aunty couldn't open her own checking account without her husband opening the account. She explained she had her own job and wanted her own account, the bank manager refused. She told him then you will see me everyday on my lunch hour standing outside this bank handing out notes to anyone who walks by of your business practices to women. After the first lunch hour the next day, he disgruntley opened her an account. This was early 60s in Calif.
I remember that and Loretta really cause a stir but she never backed down from any song she wrote. Even in places where it wasn't the law, that was the attitude of many doctors.
She recorded this 5 years after the birth control pill became available and 2 years after Roe v Wade, so the song was very controversial at the time. And she was, indeed, describing what it was like for women as breeders. She was also a child bride, married at 13.
She was and IS a woman who speaks her mind, Loretta was having babies since she was 15 yrs old. The pill freed women to live their lives. The song was very controversial, but SO important.
Yes it was controversial and banned there were different movements for women at the time. She WAS having babies by her husband too. The radio Stations had a problem with ( someone singing about birth control). But she got the last laugh.😆
This song was banned on radio. But I tell you that she sang to women who never ever realize that they could get the pill. She spoke to women in Appalachia she really really really made a difference.
Loretta Lynn says that by her count she has had 14 songs banned from select radio stations because she sang about life instead of what the industry wanted her to sing. She was telling the truth about what she was living and said that each time a song was banned it sold even better than before radio banned it, so she didn't worry if they were banned. She didn't see anything wrong with the songs, they were real life, but others felt they were scandalous for that time.
@@ladybhive1210 Yes "The Pill" was one of them. A few others were "Fist City", Rated X", "Don't Come home a Drinking", "Wings Upon Your Horns", One's on the Way". I don't have a complete list and I read about the 14 songs in one of her books.
My mother loved her, which surprises me in retrospect because my mother was very judgmental and straight laced. But Loretta was her favorite female singer.
Loretta was banned for this song. She wrote a lot of her biggest songs in the 60s and 70s.... the women's movement was taking hold at that time. Sexual liberation of women scared the hell out of the average man and most radio and TV stations were in their control at the time. She was groundbreaking for sure. Her music became more topical as she grew older and more liberated. And many of her songs were about womens' experiences in general, not just hers personally.
Loretta kept it REAL! She wrote songs about real life and you have to respect her for it. This song was very controversial when it came out and there were a lot of radio stations that refused to play it. But it still became a classic. Gotta give props to Loretta - she truly was a force to be reckoned with!
Loretta Lynn is a country legend. She is a singer song writer who's music has spanned 6 decades. She was also friends with the great late Patsy Cline. Her younger sister Crystal Gayle also is a great singer. She grew up dirt poor & stayed humble & true to her roots. The autobiographical movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" is worth looking at.
She was 13 when she got married and 14 when she had her first child. Six children born from 1948 to 1964. Her last pregnancy was twin girls. Hence the song about the Pill.
Loretta had 6 children: Betty Sue 1948-2013, Jack Benny 1949-1984, Cissy born 1952, Ernest Ray born 1954 and the twins Patsy (named after Patsy Cline) and Peggy (named after Loretta's sister) born 1964.
Loretta sang from experience. I read her biography. She claimed she was baffled for a while as to where all her babies were coming from. She was 15 years old and very naive.
Yeah, I heard her say in an interview that she didn't know where they were coming from. She also said if she had the pill back then she woulda been "a-poppin 'em like pop corn."
Ya'll need to watch Coal Miners Daughter the movie. It is about her life. She literally did not know about sex until her wedding night. That us how innocent, or naive, she was.
Loretta truly loved her husband so much. I remember when he passed away it was so sad. You'll understand their marriage once you watch the movie. Their relationship progressed with the times.
This was in the 70's and that was unthinkable then!! She was breaking barriers with this song!! You said that you didn't know that they could talk about this then. They couldn't!! She was very controversial!
10-04-22 R.I.P. Loretta. She was my secret girlfriend ever since I saw her perform live when the Grand Ol' Opry road show came to Seattle way back in the 60s. Hard to believe such a remarkable music icon is no longer with us. Her presence will be greatly missed.
I remember when I was just barely in Jr. High, I heard this song on the radio. We lived in rural Georgia at the time.... A while later, I was listening to the radio and the DJ on the radio apologized for playing the song and said that it wouldn't be played on that station any more! That just made me turn to another station to see if they would play it! I finally heard it again and really listened to it and it was wonderful! Those self-righteous hypocrites were really torn because they loved Loretta Lynn but felt that the song was against their narrow-minded, misogynistic beliefs!
Ha ha great song and reaction. Loretta was married at 14 and had 6 children. Yes Doo was her husband's name. This song was considered to controversial and lots of stations wouldn't play it. She said "I have 6 kids. Wouldn't you want the pill" lol. She told it like it was!
It was growing up listening to her music, that gave me some of the strength and opinions I ended up forming. Love her and all the great women of country back then!
Great reaction!! There's a quote from a country doctor about how this song did more to let country women think about birth control than the doctors. She had 4 kids by the time she was 20 (married at 14). It was one of many songs that was banned from radio and TV.
❤️ I love me some Loretta Lynn! She was my mama's favorite singer and I grew up listening to her songs. You got to listen to more of her music and her music with Conway Twitty her singing partner. ❤️
She also kept every gift a fan ever gave her. There's a museum at her ranch. Talk about her being real? When we toured her house she had the same kitchen table as us.
Shawn and Mel, FYI in reference to Loretta's "brooder house" - a brooder house is where young chicks are kept to keep warm until thy are no longer need the heat.
Another song from that time influenced by the women's movement. And this did not go down well with country fans at the time! It was pretty gutsy for a country star of her stature! 😁 You go Loretta! ❤
This song created a huge wave in society when released, lots of stations refused to play this. Is said to be a turning point in women's heath and them taking control of birth control, once the control of their husband's.
My great grandmother had 17 children...I had a doctor who had 14 children & my Avon lady ( in the 1990s) was pregnant with her 18th child. In the times of my great grandparents, folks often came from working farms and having many children to maintain the farms & passing them on to family was considered an asset for that reason. Also because in those days you could lose a child due to simple things like an injury or a simple thing like a kidney infection or illness/ virus (no antibiotics back then). My Avon lady & her hubby were practicing Catholics. She told me (in confidence) that she wanted her tubes tied after delivering the one she was carrying, but her husband said no & she was afraid to take birth control pills. My doctor told me that every time her husband (also a doctor) and her went on vacation, she always ended up pregnant (they were also Catholics)..she told me, she was going to tell him no more vacations!! SMH.
Absolutely love your reactions!! Loretta tells it like it is. Yes, Doo was out living life while she had 4 babies by the time, she was 17. You'll see in the movie he said when she told him she was pregnant, they found something she was good at!
They couldn’t talk about it back then; they banned her from radio on this song; so she went live everywhere with her song. Inspired women everywhere to get the pill ❤️
Loretta is one tough/strong chick, who's known nothing but work all her life. God Bless that wonderful woman. Country women of my Mama's generation were some tough tough ladies
I love ya'll reactions, especially the Loretta reactions. She my favorite artist. If you think this song was shocking, listen to her song Wings Upon Your Horns. She said after she recorded it Doo told her that was the filthiest song he had ever heard. Loretta music is very real and that's what made her the great artist that she is. I'm a superfan. ❤❤ but Ive only got to see her in concert once probably 6 or 7 years ago. The whole audience just sat there in awe. You just couldn't take your eyes off her. She was just sitting in a chair on the stage with her great band singing her sings and telling stories. All 5000 of us were just in awe with full attention on her. One of my favorite memories for sure.
Loretta is one of purest singer/song writers ever… and yes this one was banned from radio but still made #1 on the charts. Would love for you to do a review on her movie after you watch it. Love y’all!
You guys should react to the movie about her life. It's called "Coal Miner's Daugther" and stars Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn and Tommy Lee Jones as her husband, Dolittle. :)
Yes! So happy you checked this trailblazing song out. Loretta sang about it when it was still taboo to discuss. You should check out "One's on the Way"
This song was banned from mainstream radio. It was very controversial at the time. Loretta said she didn't care cause she wasn't the only women who felt this way.
Thank you for hearing Loretta Lynn, y'all are awesome and my new favorite RUclipsrs. Please listen to Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty Louisiana woman Mississippi man also listen to Loretta Lynn's sister Crystal Gayle don't you make my brown eyes blue. Thank you and keep up the good work 👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Rest In Peace, Loretta. Came to RUclips to listen to some of my favorites. I remember that this song slayed my mom! It’s great to revisit her with you two today!
When the pill came out it was a very controversial time, and this song was a rallying cry to many of the women in my mother's generation. They were so brave, and did so much to lay the ground work of many of the freedoms we as women today take for granted. I wish that their contribution was remembered more. Or that they would make a movie about that time period. Women's Lib was not just women in the street burning their bras and protesting. It was millions of housewives deciding that they wanted their daughters to have a better life. They fought and endured so much persecution just to be able to support their families and make a decent wage that was equal to the pay that a man received for the same job. They opened doors that we all just take for granted. Loretta was one of those women who was brave enough to speak her truth, while at the same time being a feminine and beautiful person.
This song came out in the late 60’s early 70’s. The song was banned from the radio and she even said she would quit the opry if they wouldn’t let her sing it. And once she did people wanted to hear it and it ended up on the radio after it was taken out of being banned
Her husband was 26 years old when they married. And she was like 14 or 16 .... very young. She was a grandmother by a very young age. This man of hers should have waited for her to be older. But damn she sure has some great songs from her experiences. Wonderful singer
Sit down and watch 'Coal Miner's Daughter' which is based on her biography. Also check out her duet with Jack White - Portland. Another great one is a song written by Shel Silverstein called "One's on the Way'! Her stuff is just great!
❤️🥰❤️ Hello S & M SQUAD, HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!! ☃️❄️🎄⭐️Nothing surprises me with The Great Loretta Lynn!!! ⭐️ LOVE LOVE LOVE HER 💖⭐️ ❤️ 🥰❤️ S and M SQUAD IS THE BEST!!! ❤️🥰❤️
Coal Miners Daughter is Amazing it's a Story that begins right after WWII Tommy Lee Jones Plays "Doolittle" Lynn and Mrs. Loretta Lynn says He should have recieved an Oscar for his performance. Raised in rural Kentucky poverty and married at the age of 13, Loretta Lynn (Sissy Spacek) begins writing and singing her own country songs in her early 20s. With the tireless help of her husband Oliver "Mooney" Lynn (Tommy Lee Jones), Loretta rises from local honky-tonks and small-time record deals to national tours and hit singles, befriending her idol Patsy Cline (Beverly D'Angelo) and becoming a country music icon despite the toll stardom takes on her family and her marriage. Release date: March 7, 1980
You MUST listen to: "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate our Home" by David Frizzell. Love your channel and listen to you every day. What you hear is what we grew up with and we listened on the radio or a small record player that you put on one at a time (when we could afford the records). Now that I am old, this music has become even more special and has much deeper meaning. Please do a video about how this music has changed your outlook (if at all)....and I think it has. Thank you
Hey, New subscriber here. I checked the songs but am assuming I may be adding to votes for songs already, although some are great but lesser known: "Honky Tonk Girl," (best version on Greatest Hits, it's on RUclips. ); "When the Tingle Becomes a Chill," "Wings Upon Your Horns," "I Want You Outta My Head and Back in My Bed," "You're Squaw is in the Warpath Tonight," "Don't Come Home A' Drinking With Lovin' On Your Mind" and "You're Looking at Country." "Blue Kentucky Girl," I believe she covered, but not sure. Loretta has an anthology collection with covers of her friend, Patsy Cline's, songs and they are surprisingly good. Of course, "One's On The Way" was probably suggested. Later in life, Loretta and Willie Nelson have a duet called "Lay Me Down." It's gospel-like and very good. Strong vocals from Loretta. Oh, she did a duet with Ernest Tubb, I think, early on, called "Mr. and Mes. Used To Be" that was good. Have fun! Enjoy your videos!
This song was actually banned from radio play along with a few others! I believe her song Rated X which is about divorce and there being a double standard for men and women! So, people loved those songs but the radio couldn’t play them because of the governing agencies! Kind of funny thinking about it now since they have birth control commercials on television and divorce is very common now! 😂
OMG! This song came on the radio while I was driving home from work this morning. Immediately the two of you came to mind. And here you are with your reactions. LOL
such a HUGE topic when this came out!!!! The pill changed America!!!! She married at 13 & had 4 kids BEFORE she became an artist!! She said the pill saved her life!!
Not to spoil it if y'all haven't yet or still plan on getting to the movie, but a funny part was her parents had told her something like the way you end up pregnant is when the cabbages bloom or the leaves open up or whatever in the garden (because apparently the pill was new when she was singing but before that people often seemed to end up pregnant in the spring, like, EVERY spring because nobody had birth control) - and the funny part was, she had already had several kids and STILL DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER WHERE THEY WERE COMING FROM, and Doolittle Lynn came home and found her out in the garden cutting the leaves off the cabbages and asked her what the heck she was doing, and she was crying about being tired of having all these kids! So I'm sure this song was about her REAL life and came later after of course he had explained things to her and then she became a more famous singer/songwriter and birth control came along, so there you go! (LOL! But there she was, a MOTHER OF SEVERAL CHILDREN, out in the garden cutting leaves off the cabbages because she thought they were making her pregnant!)😂🤣
You'll love the movie. I've watched it at least 30 times. I actually own it on DVD. Great movie. Sissy Spacek won an academy award for her performance of Loretta Lynn.
Love you guys! Loretta Lynn is REAL. For some contrast, you should listen to her little sister, Crystal Gayle, also a country singer but their styles are night and day different as Crystal sounds more like a jazz singer. Check out Don't It MakeMy Brown Eyes Blue.
Thank you for your reaction! You should watch the movie, Coal Miners Daughter, about her life. loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline were close friends. Loretta broke all barriers with her lyrics! The first country female singer to truly speak her mind. In those times radio stations didn't want to play her music. Of course rest is history.
The main word I could use to describe Loretta is "FEISTY"... she'll tell you like it is right to your face. I've known several people who grew up where and how she did (coal country of TN, WV and KY) and they're ALL like that. No nonsense, no subterfuge, honest, hard working, God fearing folks who will have your back and give you the shirt off of theirs in your time of need.... and they are fiercely loyal friends. All that's asked in return is the same. And I wouldn't trade any one of those folks for all the money in the world.
You should check out a song called "Portland Oregon." Its a duet with Loretta Lynn and Jack White from the White Strjpes. Loretta is alot older when they recorded this song. It sounds great though.
Ps that album dropped when my daughter was 7. That was her intro and she was an instant fan. I, lifelong. We took her to her first show when she was 9. Kind of at the end....then Loretta started playing a song i or two and then having her grandchildren come and do a set. Still amazing though.

How I wish they were recorded. I love listening to her life accounts, she's just so blunt and interesting to listen too.
the accrual number on songs she has had banned is 13, she still holds that record
A book of her song lyrics must be published ....it is American genius material!
Yes, this one damn near caused a riot in country music land!
Yes!
I was surprised to learn that any of her songs were banned from the radio. Unreal.
Before the early 70s, women had to have permission from their husbands to get any kind of birth control . This song was revolutionary.
That seems so crazy now! It's infuriating.
I believe it depended on where you lived. It wasn't that way in my state...

I can’t wait for y’all to see the movie. I know you will enjoy it
Ones on the Way is another good one ,
Loretta is awesome, amazing, brilliant !💕💕💕💕💕
As an Appalachian women I love Loretta and her honesty. I also love watching your reaction.😊
Yes! So happy you checked this trailblazing song out. Loretta sang about it when it was still taboo to discuss.
You should check out "One's on the Way"
The movie is so real y'all will love it.
She was ahead of her time. Alot of her songs they wouldn't play on the radio
Another Great song from Loretta Lynn is " Don't Come Home Drinking With Loving On Your Mind "
I'm sure my mom related to this song even though she was done having the 10 of us by time this song was out.
Yay! Now, " one's on the way"
This song was banned from mainstream radio.
Don't expect "Portland Oregon" to be traditional country. Like most of her songs, there's a true story behind it.
❤️🥰❤️ Hello S & M SQUAD, HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!! ☃️❄️🎄⭐️Nothing surprises me with The Great Loretta Lynn!!! ⭐️ LOVE LOVE LOVE HER 💖⭐️
❤️ 🥰❤️ S and M SQUAD IS THE BEST!!!
Thank you
A great one.
That song was banned from country radio along with several others.
Radio stations refused to play that song. Loretta didn’t give a squat. Lol
Once you watch the Best Autobiography Ever Made, you will have a all new respect for this wonderfully, strong woman.
Loretta Lynn is the Queen ♥️ she also was in a Duet with Conway Twitty they have a lot of Hits together
Songs like come from only real world experience and Loretta was and is the real deal. Country music like her's is the soul music
The Classic Country Ladies told it like it was.
Got to hear and play Loretta Lynn write RATED X. you'll love it. She wrote this song and most of her songs!
You might also check out the movie Sweet Dreams the Patsy Cline story
OMG! This song came on the radio while I was driving home from work this morning. Immediately the two of you came to mind. And here you are with your reactions. LOL
I love this. It brings back memories and Loretta was my favorite
If I was having babies since I was 15 or 16 years old I would be singing a song about the pill also!!!!!!
love you guys keep listening to good oldies but goodies music
This was one of Loretta's many songs to be banned by radio stations. But the public requested it so much they had to give in and start playing it.
Oh my...Dear Uncle Sam....thet jazz will make you tear up.
such a HUGE topic when this came out!!!!
I love the way you guys are loving on Miss Loretta
I always loved One's On The way, which is why she needed The Pill.
This incredible woman sang her truth. Listen to One's On The Way. It pairs great with The Pill.
Love your Loretta reactions
Please do, Don't Come Home A Drinking
Late Loretta Lynn had six kids, and, according to her autobiography, she became a grandmother at 29. Rest in peace, Loretta.
This was one of five songs banned from from radio play. She said "That's radios problem, they (the banned songs) usually go to #1 anyway."
Her husband was named Doolittle, or Doo for short. His nickname was Mooney from the time he ran moonshine.
You'll love the movie. I've watched it at least 30 times. I actually own it on DVD. Great movie. Sissy Spacek won an academy award for her performance of Loretta Lynn.
☮️💙💙💙keepin it real Loretta!🔥
Love you guys!
Loretta Lynn is REAL.
For some contrast, you should listen to her little sister, Crystal Gayle, also a country singer but their styles are night and day different as Crystal sounds more like a jazz singer.
Check out Don't It MakeMy Brown Eyes Blue.
Or Half the Way or Talking in Your Sleep...so many classics
That whole album and how it came to be is fantastic ❤️❤️❤️
Ps that album dropped when my daughter was 7. That was her intro and she was an instant fan. I, lifelong. We took her to her first show when she was 9. Kind of at the end....then Loretta started playing a song i or two and then having her grandchildren come and do a set. Still amazing though.
