I've sailed the Meraviglia several times --- but only in the Yacht Club. It seems that the problems you're reporting could be solved by sailing YC, but I understand why people may not want to do that if they are trying to stick to a budget. However, for a lot of people, by the time they book their cruise, pay for a drinks package, an internet package, specialty restaurants, items from the mini bar, spa access, etc. etc., they pay almost the same as YC where all those items (and easy immigration as well as other services) are included. I do notice that outside the YC the standard of service is sometimes questionable ... and, the standard of service on the MSC European ships (I LOVE the Grandiosa!) seems better than the USA-based Meraviglia.
I know Saint John. That is a long walk, from the east side of the harbour to the Lancaster Mall in West Saint John (I was in that McDonalds this August) and back. I'm not surprised you were close getting back. Nice town, nonetheless, and the centre of town has a number of good fish restaurants.
This is my hometown this is where I'm from and I just want to say thank you for doing such an incredible job of the city I have grown up in for 44 years now It's nice to see somebody appreciate stuff that we don't unfortunately I'm very happy you had a great walk throughout our city and you enjoyed yourself and you stayed safe God bless you thank you for making our city look so beautiful
Hey Fraser! Jill here (aka Lisa), from The Blue Pelican! We loved having you visit, hearing your story, and following along on your adventures. Thank you for the plug for the business, and next time you're in Port in SJ, give me a heads up and we will give you the royal treatment!!!
Jill, oh my goodness - you’ve found this video! Hello 👋🏼 😊 How lovely to see your name pop up. I absolutely loved meeting you (hopefully you can tell from the video), and will absolutely hit you up if I come back - I’ve got high expectations when you say ‘Royal treatment’ - you’re on! Hope you’re good!!
@@FraserAtSea a local customer actually told me about the video, and I'm so glad. Not only that Fraser, but a NEW customer arrived today, a cruise ship passenger, who came here on your recommendation. He's super sweet and we both agree you're awesome so now he's my new best friend. I believe he's about to start his own travel vlog and he loves your content so watch out for him! And yes, I will definitely arrange for a historic tour of the city with a private guide for you, which I hope is royal enough. Depending on how much time you have we might throw in some poutine and lobster rolls just to make it classically Canadian ;)
I live in NB (not Saint John) but so glad you had a positive experience in Saint John. The people really appreciate when the Cruise ship tourists enjoy their city.
Ah, nice one - thanks for finding my video, and taking the time to comment. I found the people here to be just SO friendly and welcoming - such a joy visiting somewhere like that! ❤️ I’ll be back, for sure!
@FraserAtSea we are well known for being the nicest city in the world. I'm so pleased you noticed. We are doing a good job 😂 . Awesome video. Please return for more adventures. Next time, hang out with more of us locals , we can take you on some fun adventures
The city is working hard to improve the waterfront for both locals and visitors. Please come back again so you can witness the evolution ;). FYI - The first cruise ship came here 35 years ago when they were diverted due to storms. They have been coming ever since. Thank you for visiting and sharing our little piece of the world.
Ahh, I'll need to book to come back then - I was so impressed, incase you couldn't tell in the video. Thanks a lot for watching - I love featuring parts of the world that are genuinely trying - I think I've left a little piece of me in Saint John!
I live in Saint John and always wondered if the reversing falls would be a let down to all the cruise ship visitors I’m glad to see I’ve just become accustomed to it and it is something tourists can marvel at. The city has put a lot of work into our port I’m glad you enjoyed your time here!
Hello! 👋🏼 Oh, I loved it here - thanks so much for having me! I showcase so many other cruise ports - feel free to follow along if you’d like to see more. Thanks a lot for watching this video!
I moved to Saint John 13 years ago from England. I recently changed my job and now work in the city market. Thanks for showing everyone the market as well as all the other great places that make up our wonderful city. 😊
Ahh, small world that you're also from the UK - what a wonderful place to call home! Please go give the Blue Pelican folks a big hug from me when you're next there!!
Hi Fraser, I am an American citizen, but my husband and I have an apartment here in Saint John where we spend 5-6 months a year here, enjoying all the people, the towne, the Fundy Bay and and all that Canada, New Brunswick and Uptown has to offer us. Tons of art, and lots going on!! We live in the vey area you were exploring that day, where the town was rebuilt after the 1877 fire 🔥 it's so beautiful here and filled with so many cool restaurants and bars and pubs, lovely stores, parks, City Market, Area 506, (were the Container Village is as uou fet off the ship). You should come back and stay for awhile. Go up to St. Andrew's to go Whale Watching on a Zodiac. It's fantastic!!!! Tons to see & do up here!!
@@victoriamccxo Hi Victoria, thanks so much for taking the time to watch my video - I’m so happy to see so many Saint John locals in these comments. You call a great corner of the world home!
Thank you for visiting and exploring Saint John Fraser. Like most, we take our surroundings, scenery and culture for granted. It is really nice to watch a visitor's perspective, so we can appreciate what we have. My spouse and I visited Scotland a few years ago, and spent 2 weeks travelling throughout Scotland, doing multiple daily Scotch tastings and tours. It was one of the best trips of my life thus far. The Scots and the Canadians get along just fine - we were treated like old friends everywhere we visited in Scotland. Slàinte Mhath!
Hi Joseph, thanks so much for your comment - delighted that you enjoyed my video, and enjoyed seeing your home through a different pair of eyes. You’re very lucky to call such a great part of the world home! I’m also glad you enjoyed Scotland - our door’s always open to you! Thanks again!
Oh, thanks so much! When I started my RUclips channel, I was so nervous nobody would watch, so comments like this genuinely mean the world to me - thank you!
I have cruised on early every ship in MSC’s North American fleet. The Meraviglia is the ONLY ship that I did not like. As a travel agent, I do book clients on MSC because it is such a great value and the ships are gorgeous. But that particular ship is one that I will not book. I hope that things get better for you. Your attitude is lovely.
I’m from Saint John, NB and am so glad you enjoyed the city. The cruise port and people at large are so happy to welcome cruisers! I cruise frequently also, and I’m biased but the reception in Saint John far outweighs many other ports I’ve visited. When I read the title of your video though, I thought you must have had a bad experience in Saint John. Hoping no one else mistakes that and skips watching your video.
Oh, absolutely not - I absolutely LOVED Saint John - the experience onboard the ship, not so much, haha! Thanks so much for watching - you call a wonderful part of the world ‘home’!
I have lived in Saint John for 9 years now, originally lived an hour away closer to the US boarder for most of my life, but had been up to Saint John more then a few times before hand. It is always nice to hear other people's experiences here and enjoying themselves, as it isn't a massive city but seems people enjoy themselves more here then other much larger cities. I worked for a year at a shop in Brunswick Square before it went out of business, story of most stores in that place, but when cruise ship season starts it got real busy in the mall as the main pedway connects to the second floor, which the shop I worked at was onlyba few shops down from the pedway. Got to hear a lot of people from around the world talking about their visit and how great this smaller city really is, and I sure do enjoy crossing the Harbour Bridge and seeing the cruise ships docked. Unfortunately when the largest cruise ship to visit the city came in last year, I was on the other side of the province so I missed it, but I have lots of pictures of other cruise ships in port, including 2 Disney cruise ships, the Wonder and Dream. Glad this video popped up in my recommended videos, it was a good watch.
Hello! Thanks so much for watching - I’ve loved reading your comment! 😊 I really love finding ports where the locals enjoy the ships coming in - there’s so many ports where the locals get annoyed, so it’s good to find you all like them! Thanks a lot for watching and therefore supporting my RUclips channel!
@@FraserAtSea Don't get me wrong, there is a few things some cruise ship passengers do that annoy me, the main thing is with people from the US who know they are in Canada, but would still ask for some reason, if the prices in these stores they go to, are in USD... As if they expect stores an hour from the US boarder, a different country with our own currency, stores mainly meant for the general public, would go out the way to show prices in USD rather then CAD. When you get that question from Americans once or twice a day whenever a cruise ship is in port does get annoying because the answer should be very obvious, at least to me. Otherwise I have no issue, and enjoy seeing the ships in the port, especially the really large ships that tower over a good portion of the city and can see them through the buildings while travelling from the east side by towards the west side. It is also good for businesses of course, as without the ships and people spending money, some of those local places wouldn't be around anymore, or be forced to maybe increase prices in order to stay around. I also enjoy the stories people tell after their visit, getting their point of view on a place I am used to living in, like when people visit Paris for example, special for the visitors, just another day for those who live there and may not see it as special.
ive lived in saint john my whole life. i remember kings square and uptown being so magical growing up and taking the bus from my east side daycare to see plays at the imperial. i went to highschool uptown at st malachys and walked through kings square every morning and afternoon and the market every lunch. me and my boyfriend had our prom in the terminal and the long glass passage way you see is where we all stood before the walk. i dont think ive ever really appreciated anything about it until this video. the red road you walk on is called the harbour passage. thats where me and my boyfriend had our first date afterschool. walked from school to the circle (now gone), all the way to the boardwalk and up to that little viewpoint with the pole in the video. our initials are carved into the wood overlooking the beach where we had our first kiss. the park you walk down on chesley drive is right behind the navy building i did cadets at. i went there every week for five years but it never seemed special. the reversing falls were always a joke since we thought the name was misleading. in this video they do truly look dramatic and beautiful haha i love how this makes me see the city differently. though i have to say i was surprised when you said you smelled mcdonald’s bc the west smells like sewage from the mill to me 😭 anyways i love this video its like a love letter to saint john. also you were crazy for not taking a cab and walking from the lancaster mall all the way to the terminal in 90 minutes thats wild 😭
Oh, thanks so much for watching - I’m so glad you enjoyed this video. I’m so glad that it’s come across how much j enjoyed my port call here - a really wonderful little corner of the world. It sounds like you’ve got some wonderful memories of Saint John - thanks a lot for sharing these with us!
I know it's all about timing of the tides, but this is the best views of the falls I've ever seen. Tides are amazing. I laughed at your McDonald's reaction, because I've done the same. 😂 Sometimes you need familiar instead of adventurous food. Cutting it close onboard...You've made me nervous before. 😂 Great views of the ship and everything. A better day for you this time! Enjoyed this one, thanks Fraser!
Thanks a lot, Tammy! The falls were spectacular - I couldn’t stop watching the water - completely mesmerising! Thanks so much for watching, as always!!
I can smell Saint John through the screen. This is a great video. But I, like most other New Brunswickers, hate Saint John. It's a shame Moncton or Fredericton aren't close enough to the coast to have a port.
@5:08 the tall apartment building to the left of the stop sign was in my backyard. My brother & I used to go on the roof and throw the pebbles at my sister in our backyard. The street you are on is Germain Street. The cross Street is Duke St. I lived just around the corner to the left.did you know why everything is brick where you were? Because of the great fire that destroyed the entire uptown of Saint John. Everyone rebuilt with brick.
Ahh yes, I did read about the great fire. I just absolutely loved my visit to this town - hope you have me back at some point!! 😊 Thanks for supporting my channel by watching and commenting!
Fun to watch a video from a tourist perspective! We like to see the cruise ships come in (especially when there are three!). It is beautiful to watch the cruise ships leave at night, it is like watching a small city drift away in the dark over the water.
Thanks a lot for watching! I love watching the ships leave at night - it’s so relaxing to see how effortlessly they glide off, isn’t it? Thanks a lot for watching and therefore supporting my little channel 😊
As a fellow Scot, I lived in Saint John for 9 years and loved it. The city has such a British(and very much Scottish presence) there from people to areas named there. Glad you enjoyed. It's such a pretty city.
Ahh, that’s cool that you lived there as a Scot - I felt instantly ‘at home’ here, so I can understand why. Thanks for watching my video. It also looks like you’re subscribed to my channel, so thanks so much for that!
It is lovely to see my home town through the eyes of a visiting cruise ship passenger! Thank you so much for the great review. And I love your videos, both day and night time.
Ahh, I’m so glad you’ve found me - thanks a lot for following along, and for your kind words on this video. I loved my visit here - hopefully you’ll all have me back sometime!! 😊
It's actually spelled Saint John and locals consider the fog that can roll in at night free air conditioning. The slogan is/was "The greatest little city in the east." 😊
You did a great job of telling your members what a great historic city Saint John is. I'm glad you enjoyed the city. SJ is the 1st amalgamated city in Canada.
Hello. Came across your channel by happenstance and just my luck you were cruising into my home town of Saint John. I'm so pleased that you had a nice visit and do hope you will return again.
Ahh, I'm glad you've found me - thanks so much for your support! I absolutely LOVED visiting Saint John - what a wonderful place you get to call home! Thanks for having me :)
I loved my day in Saint John when I was there last Oct on The Emerald. My timing wasn't right to see the reversing action, but I enjoyed the walk along the red path to the visitor center very much anyway. Also the architecture and vibe of the city. I shuddered when you noted the time you started back. I was convinced the video would be about missing the ship. 50 push ups, dude.
@FraserAtSea Question: This is about a comment you made about Virgin that you would have preferred a balcony. Was this a function of the ship or of the itinerary? Did you find yourself spending more time in the room because the vibe of the ship was so intense or was it the itinerary? I fear that Virgin woukd be too noisy for me. That's why I ask.
Oh Fraser I’ve been following your trip and unfortunately know exactly what you’re talking about when you say this cruise just isn’t meeting your expectations. I mentioned in another post my experience with Virtuosa was pretty much identical. It was so sad to see so many crew members have such disdain and lack of interest or motivation. It was clear so many of them didn’t want to be there. I was lucky enough to speak privately with a few crew members (these were a couple of the very few who were outstanding). They understood my frustration and realised I knew things weren’t right. They gave me an insight into what happens on board and explained the hierarchy amongst crew. I heard the same details from different crew members. What I was told made me feel pretty angry and left a very bitter taste towards this cruise line. Happy to pass on to you what I was told. Anyway I’m thoroughly enjoying your videos, great work and I hope the Walmart tripod does the job. I’m definitely keen to cruise Canada now.
Hi Alan, thanks so much for this comment, and thanks a lot for following along! I’m so sad you’ve had similar on Virtuosa - she’s one of my favourite ships, and I’ve had such great experiences on there! Hopefully they turn it around - I’m not overly confident in their product, at this point! 😔
Glad you had a good time in our tiny city. If you’re ever back this way you’ll have to check out Hopewell Rocks. It’s the highest tides in the world. And The Blue Pelican is awesome!
Another plug for The Blue Pelican, thank you Miss Mary!!!! This is Jill from The Blue Pelican and I'm really touched to read this. You both made my day.
Saint Johner here. Thanks for visiting our city. I live rural now, but all your walking paths were pretty much my daily life growing up. The first building you showed was my Saint John high school.
@@grekounas oh wow - that’s so cool! Thanks so much for watching my video - I’m so glad you locals have found my video, and like what you see - thank you!
I went on that exact same cruise a week later and I had zero problems with MSC. I have cruised on their ships now at least three times and have had great service and overall a wonderful experience so hopefully your issue is an anomaly.
Oh, this is a comment I was hoping would come in - it felt SO out of character for MSC for everything to go wrong. Great to hear it was much improved for you after me - long may that continue!
Sir, I am just agog at the atrocious experience that you keep receiving from MSC Meraviglia this cruise. MERAVIGLIA must be Italian for “Feck-up at EVERY convenient patrons’ inconvenience!” This is our motto, chaps! This as opposed to what (in english) Meraviglia actually means: - “wonder”; “stupendous”; “prodigious”… …You get the idea. On the pleasant side, your time in this Canadian port seamed nice to see. The tide that you experience in Australia is named a “rip.” Whether in the ocean or lake, etc.. And the container hub for shopping and trinkets looked funky. Cannot wait to find out what doesn’t happen next. 😢 😅😊
Ha, if there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that everything will NOT go to plan on this cruise, haha! Thanks a lot for watching - glad you enjoyed it David!
@@FraserAtSea 🫡🙉🥸🙃🤣 Out if interest, is your cruise karaoke goto song “My Heart Will Go On” or “Abide By Me” as This trip sounds like you’re on the Titanic. Haheha
Loving this vlog series Fraser, even though we feel for you so much over the service issues. Your honesty is refreshing and really does help people make informed decisions about their next trip.
Hi guys, thanks so much for watching - always great to see your names pop up! I was a bit unsure about this vlog series if I’m honest, but I’m blown away with how well it’s been received. Thanks again!!
GReat highlight video of Saint John. And there was tons of other things not highlighted so a visit is certainly worth it if you are planning a visit to our east coast. As a Canadian, I am proud your experience on land was so great. Even in Canada we consider the easterners extra friendly ---they really do have that reputation . Love your perspective on purchasing something in a local port and that people will see cruise passengers as a positive to their local economy. Looks like Saint John terminal has upped their game since I was there last. As for MSC---Ii had to do a lot of talking to myself to enjoy my time on Divinia to stay positive but it wasn't the staff or the ship, it was the passengers who were rude etc. I wonder if you caught these staff on their "last nerve" after a season of rude people. (because even a positive respectful person like you can't seem to get staff to be accomodating) I too disliked the idea of dining times and gave up and did the buffet on my 2 MSC cruises. BTW that solo cabin looked like a nightmare---I enjoyed the solo cabins on NCL, Celebrity, Virgin .
Thanks so much for watching, and what a lovely comment. I’m delighted that you (as a Canadian) have found my channel - thanks so much for your support! I’ve not been to many parts of Canada, but where I have been has been absolutely beautiful - I can’t wait to return! Thanks again!
Saint John's looks lovely. I too like to check out the local shops/supermarkets when I travel to get an idea of how it is to live there. When shopping, I always try to support the smaller independently owned shops whenever possible. It's nice of you to mention the Blue Pelican shop. I'll have to remember that if I ever get up that way. It sounds like MSC really needs to up their game, especially when it comes to organization and customer service.
If you do happen to come into The Blue Pelican while visiting Saint John, make sure you tell us about this video and why you stopped in. We love it! - Jill, The Blue Pelican.
You walked right past Tim Hortons and got coffee at McDonald’s! 😅 If you ever come back to Canada, you’ll have to go to Tim’s to get a double double and timbits. Love your videos and following along in your adventures!
You should have visited Catapult Coffee and Studio at the Port in the container village. Everything is locally made, their pottery is beautiful abd well priced. they have the best coffee and it supports the homeless in Saint John. Their store on Princess Street in an old Victorian brownstone is beautiful! Close to King Square where you discovered the park. Love your videos! We are going on this ship in September out of NYC but headed south. 😊
Great video Fraser..so nice to showcase Saint John. There is certainly more to see around the area but you are certainly pressed for time while ashore. I’ve spent a lot of time in the city and in the market. A little trivia that I was told if you look at the ceiling of the market its design is that of a hill of a ship. When the really settlers built the market they were sailors and shipbuilders not carpenters thus the design. Hopefully you continue to have a safe and fruitful journey!
Oh wow - I had no idea about this Craig - thanks a lot for sending this comment! I’d love to return sometime - it does look like there is just so so much to do there! 😊
NGL...I thought the Saint John port of call sucked for you, but glad to see you enjoyed your visit in our fair city. Hopefully you will be back when the waterfront is updated as the Fundy Quay is currently under construction.
@FraserAtSea what did the government do to limit the access & ability for those wishing to do so? Our city is desperate to find a solution but it's turned into a huge debate on what will work. We believe a fenced cage up around it will prevent self exiting attempts. Most will argue saying "they will find another way". I agree they will, however, only a couple of beautiful souls have survived because this is almost a guaranteed way to succeed. I'm not sure if you noticed the signage posted along the bridge or not. Some people have put up signs with phone #'s for help & encouraging messages. So many witnesses, including children, have been traumatized by witnessing this. If there was a self exiting barrier in place, we may have a better chance of minimizing the successful attempts & trauma caused by witnessing these tragedies.
I totally watched this full video Saint John has and still is my home town my whole life (30 years) and I enjoyed your video so much! So glad you enjoyed what you got to see! Love our port city (us locals also call it a fog city cause we always have fog 😂) my hubby works at our port and absolutely loves his job down there. ❤ safe travels on all your adventures!
Oh, I LOVE the amount of locals that have found this video! Thanks so much for watching, and I hope to make it back to your wonderful part of the world at some point!
Hi Fraser! Thanks for your great video on your visit here to Saint John! I'm glad you had a great day exploring and I am shocked that you made it back to the ship in time when you only had an hour and you still had to go to McDonalds, Walmart, and walk back from the West side! I hope you get to come back to Saint John again and maybe take a few days to explore the Maritimes. I'm sure you would love Nova Scotia and PEI as well. We have only taken 1 cruise and it was this one except we started in Boston and in June. Like you we found St Johns and Halifax wonderful! We booked the cruise only the week before so all the excursions were already booked. But we also found as we got off the ship the tourism hosts were wonderful. They told us how we could take the bus to the see the falls. Our girls were little. It was a lovely day. Very kind of you to promote the local businesses! What a beautiful sailaway. Being summer we left and it was still daylight. Sorry you are not having a good time aboard the ship itself. At least you are still laughing.
Thanks a lot for watching, and thanks for this comment! I did find the hosts to be wonderful on this itinerary - it was SO clear that they wanted you to enjoy your visit to their town/city - it really does make all the difference, doesn’t it? Thanks again for watching!!
Just to be the Saint John snob that I am, it's not St Johns. It's Saint John. Us Saint Johners don't like being mistaken for St Johns Newfoundlanders! Lol!
Visited St John on a cruise stop many years ago. Friendly little town, a bit sad, quite low income you could tell, NB is quite dependent on transfer payments from other provinces.
Ahh, interesting you also visited! I’d love to go back - it’s ports like this that I just love to support! Speaking of supporting, thanks for supporting my channel by watching my video!
I’ve just started watching your channel and now have to go back and binge watch all the other episodes. The Carnival Cruise and 7 Mile Beach episode with your tip about grabbing a cup of sprinkles for your ice creams had me in stitches. You are absolutely adorable ❤.
Cathy, thanks so much - what a lovely comment! I’d love you to check out my other episodes - if you’re interested, you can find my whole running order on my website to help 😊 www.fraseratsea.com/my-year-at-sea
The RED BRICK you mentioned liking likely came from Europe as balast during the 19th Century, you see it all over the East Coast. The ships headed to Europe full, and came back empty, so they needed weight, and the brick was cheap.
Wow. It's hard to imagine a cruise with such lousy service and bad attitudes from the crew! I think you're being wonderfully patient and optimistic about this one - after so many negative comments from so many RUclips cruise reviewers I wouldn't go near an MSC ship on a bet!
I have sailed many budget cruise lines over the years, and never was I given the surly service that MSC has become famous for. I don’t expect caviar when I pay for pretzels, but I do expect those pretzels to be served with smile!
I know these sorts of issues are not the norm, but it seems like I hear far more complaints about service on MSC than any other cruise line. Makes me wonder if they transferred all the most experienced people to Vitruosa.
Yeah, I wondered the same - I’ve had SUCH great cruises on Virtuosa and just couldn’t understand how this ship (which is basically the exact same) was so poor in comparison!
Hey, I also live in this port of call, the "red path" is called harbor passage, I use it often to get to our North end from uptown (port is uptown), and the the first bridge is called harbor bridge, there second one with the lookout is called the games falls bridge, we also have a second larger Walmart on the other side of town
@@FraserAtSea no problem. We have a bunch of nice beaches, there’s a tour you can take to see the old buildings, Irving nature park, bay of fundy, first ever cable ferry is here too. Whenever you’re back here I’ll gladly give you a tour
Dear Fraser, good morning. Un grand bonjour. St-John is replete with Acadian history -- the original settlers from France who arrived nearly four hundred years ago. In fact, St. John is one of the major French speaking cities of Canada, after Montréal and Québec. Unfortunately when the British defeated the French at the Battle of "les plaines d'Abraham", many of these "Acadiens" were deported to New Orleans. To this very day, Acadien French, which is old, old French from the 15th century is the same as Louisiana French (yes, French is still spoken there). If you want to savour Acadien music, go pick yourself a CD of Edith Butler called L"Acadie. It's haunting. Je vous souhaite une bonne journée.
@@lynnfranklin5098 There is ignorance in all parts of the world. And "le snobisme parisien"" is about as bad as it gets. That being said, things have changed. No longer is standard Parisien French required on TV and Radio; the various regional dialects and even patois are taught in the regions; the absolutisme linguistique of Louis XIV is long over. Hearing an Acadien or someone from New Orleans speak French is like coming face-to-face with the history of the French language. Grandes amitiés, Lulu
Loved watching your video 😊 I live just a few hours from St. John. My mother and I talk about a cruise sooner than later. She's a very fit 87 year old, but just had her first major setback 😢 cancer in her kidney. However; they removed her kidney and She's doing great...NED anywhere else. I feel that she wants to do something now while she's able...Thanks for your updates.
Oh, thanks so much for watching, and I really hope you get to make the trip. I’ll keep everything crossed for you. Thanks for your support for my channel here on RUclips!
The Saint John river is also known as the “Rhine of North America” and is 673 kilometres long. As well, you were at the west side Walmart and it is smaller than the east side one.
Hi Fraser---came across your video by chance and when I saw that you were visiting Saint John, knew I had to watch. I always wondered what cruising visitors think of this port, as those of us who live near it tend to think it doesn't have alot to offer....but your enthusiasm for Saint John has given me new perspective. You walked alot that day and perhaps should have grabbed a taxi from Walmart, lol, but in the end, you got back on time and enjoyed yourself, to boot. Thanks for coming to New Brunswick! Cheers and safe travels. I have now subscribed.
Hello Theresa, thanks so much for watching, and thanks for commenting! I absolutely loved my day here - the people were just SO lovely! Thanks for subscribing - see you in another video 😊 👏🏼 Welcome to Fraser at Sea!
I know exactly what you are experiencing as my husband and I experienced the same bad service on Preziosa. My husband is disabled and panics eating with people we do not know. In booking direct with MSC I had discussed this with them and they assured me that we would be on a table for two. Did this happen, no it did not. They were so rude in the restaurant because we were only Bella passengers. We ended up eating in the buffet or speciality restaurants.
Ahh, I’m so sorry you’ve also been caught out, and sorry you were also highlighted as a Bella passenger 😔 Hope it hasn’t out you off! Thanks for watching my video today 😊
St. John is a great place. The reversing waters tour is good. Going to the historic marketplace is good too. They'll take you there from the reversing water. It's a long walk to the ship. The City Market place is great. Sometimes I get lunch here and definitely purchase coffee beans to take home. More parks on other side of historic marketplace. Should always bring clothes for all kinds of weather. The falls reverse better in the morning than in the afternoon. How is the cruise so wrong? You are on MSC. Behind you on your way to Walmart is Wendy's.
Hello! Thanks for watching, and I totally agree - stunning part of the world! The reversing falls were truly mesmerising - I could’ve stood there for hours! Thanks a lot for watching my video :)
Ahh, I’m so glad you think so - thanks so much for watching! I’ll hopefully make it back to you at some point - you call such a gorgeous part of the world ‘home’! 😊
As a local, I'm pleased that none of the things that went wrong were onshore! :P Hope you can make it back sometime and see the new Market Square plaza that's finally open, and maybe check out some of the uptown pubs. :)
Ha, don’t worry - nothing went wrong off the ship - thank goodness! I’d love to make it back at some point - I fell in love with your little corner of the world! Thanks a lot for watching! 😊
Hey! Don't worry - I can explain! I cruised a lot last year (about 250 nights in total), and so when I make 2 videos a week, things are a little delayed. Apologies for the confusion, and thanks for your support!
Missing the ship is something we have nightmares about. Glad you got back on board. It is interesting to see that there are differing policies on moving dining times on different MSC ships. Great video again. Can't believe this is going back to September! You must have so much content to edit! I hope you enjoy the video editing. 😂 Watching this, I was also curious about your video storage arrangements for your epic trip. That's just my inner geek, though.
Ha, yeah - SO much to edit - 2 videos a week is tough going with editing etc, so I’m amazed I’ve kept that up. Should be done by Christmas 😂 Storage-wise, I relied on an upgraded iCloud account and strong wifi to push the files up, then stored locally on external drives when I didn’t have good internet - a bit of a logistical challenge, for sure! Haha, thanks so much for watching!!
Welcome to Canada!! Been to St. John many times and where my father was born and lived as a child. Good that you got to the City Market and Reversing Falls! Good to see that you got yourself up higher and that you really got too see the river flowing in reverse!! There are usually jet boats out there filled with people swirling in them rapids. Fun to watch, but I've never tried. Well, you made it and wasn't a pier runner!! lol Indeed, one cannot pass up a $3 deal! How wonderful that you had a clear evening for sail-away...St. John is renowned for its fog! Unfortunate with the dining room experience...has never been a problem as there are always empty tables somewhere...but I am wondering if corners are being cut with fewer staff available for service. If you really want to see the fall colours and if you are ever up in this part of Canada again, make sure to take a cruise that takes you to Sydney, Nova Scotia somewhere around later September or early October. And if there is an excursion to take you to the Cabot Trail, do it!! Continue to enjoy and keep that brilliant positive attitude!!
Hey, thanks - amazing you must’ve spent a good bit of time there is that’s where your Dad grew up! Glad you enjoyed watching my adventure! This cruise actually took me to there a few ports later - stay tuned!!
Oh no - sorry to hear that. I find them to be pretty inconsistent, and the fact you didn’t enjoy Virtuosa proves this - she’s one of my favourite ships! Thanks a lot for watching!
Gosh that was close! You gave us a good insight into Saint John’s, so thank you. I hope your luck changed and you came away from the Casino a winner! I look forward to another day of excitement?
Oh, thanks so much Hazel - glad you enjoyed! No comment about the casino - I guess they wouldn’t exist if I won every time, huh? Thanks so much for your support by following along!
I sailed MSC on a New England/Canada cruise last month. We docked in the morning but were not cleared until mid-day after Canadian Customs completed the interviews either.... guess it goes both ways.
I have no idea why they do this - surely if it takes half the day, the ship really should be in port mega late, or just stay overnight and leave the next day? It’s craaaazy! Thanks for watching, and thanks for this comment too - I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who’s been frustrated with this challenge…! 😩
Fraser, you are being so optimistic with all the cock ups😂. I think I would have been painting a St Andrews Cross on my face and going on the rampage to guest services.
Haha, this comment just made me laugh out loud - can you imagine the scenes? I think my FREEDOM was well and truly taken when I saw that solo cabin on Day 1, haha! 😂
The title makes it sound as though you're blaming Saint John for the troubles onboard. 🤨 Great vid of the Loyalist City, first incorporated city in Canada. Americans loyal to the crown, left their homes to come here during the revolutionary war. Glad you found Walmart. Love the Scottish (Glasgowan?) accent.
Ahh, not at all - I absolutely loved Saint John! Thanks a lot for watching, and yes - Scottish! I grew up just outside Glasgow, but now live in England. Thanks for supporting my content by watching today! 😊
Glad you had a good day in St John; the Reversing Falls are mesmerising and your video was stunning. Dying to know - did you find a use for the spider/octopus/dalek gismo? 😊
Zoe, hello! Thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, they were absolutely amazing, weren’t they? Haha, thanks for asking - I actually did - I used it to time lapse on a few ships after this one!
We went on the MSC Europa in March this year. It was an amazing cruise. We loved the ship. Only issue we had was the tour in Rome. Mainly because the tour guide took off without us and left us behind. We did let the cruise know in the review we gave.
Hello Paula! 👋🏼 Thanks for watching - I’ve also really enjoyed my cruises on World Europa - I was on there for 21 days last year - she’s a beauty! Wow - that’s not ideal for Rome! 😳
@@PaulaT237 oh no - that’s not ideal! That’s when there’s a real benefit to getting one from the cruise line, isn’t it? I’m glad you made it back safely!
The loyalist city coin shop its just a few doors down from the market actual had a document up on the wall with shipment inventory for the market. I forget the year buts its a oldie. I go there myself all the time to buy sj memorabilia. If you get a chance to come back i do reccomend checking out the loyalist house, fort howe, and rockwood park or the irving nature trail. I wish we still had our museum, there were some really neat exhibits like all the models of nb birds, they had little push button beside each model that would make the bird call sound that was my fav as a kid lol.
Ah, some great recommendations here - thanks so much! I’d love to make it back - I think I’ve left a little piece of me at this port - wonderful place!
Was recommended this vid, Part 2 l think, first but l'm into it now and will watch to its completion. Also, l've been watching Hudson & Rex, filmed in St John too, which makes it even more special. Thx again.
Thanks so much for watching my video today. If you’re new here, please support my channel by clicking SUBSCRIBE, and why not come and check out my other videos too? Thank you, and welcome onboard! ❤
You obviously left at high tide. The water level along the dock shows it.
What is the story with all the love for MSC, I find it to be a very sub-par cruise line. Celebrity, NCL there are far better options.
Thanks for supporting my channel by watching my video, too!
@@FraserAtSea I will definitely do that for you 😊
Hi Fraser, I am an American citizen, but my husband and I have an apartment here in Saint John where we spend 5-6 months a year here, enjoying all the people, the towne, the Fundy Bay and and all that Canada, New Brunswick and Uptown has to offer us.
Hugs from Saint john. Thanks for spending your day with us. 🫂
Thanks so much for watching!
When you said it was quarter to six but you had to be back at 7:30 my jaw dropped. Glad you made it. I was nervous for you!😂
Ha, watching this back, my jaw dropped. How I made it back, I don’t think I’ll ever understand 😂 Thanks for watching!
Saint Johner here! Great video Fraser! Thanks for showing off our city through your eyes.
Thanks Fraser! I needed a reminder of how fabulous my home Is.
Oh, you’re welcome to stop by anytime and I’ll remind you, ha! Thanks for having me!
Love your take and video presentation. Being a solo cruiser myself I use your videos as a reference for my travels. Keep up the great work.
Oh, thanks so much! When I started my RUclips channel, I was so nervous nobody would watch, so comments like this genuinely mean the world to me - thank you!
Canada is such a treasure
Oh, I completely agree!
Thank you 😊.
Thanks so much for watching, and thanks for commenting! I didn’t have the best experience by any stretch on this cruise… Thanks for your support!
I also enjoy the stories people tell after their visit, getting their point of view on a place I am used to living in, like when people visit Paris for example, special for the visitors, just another day for those who live there and may not see it as special.
ive lived in saint john my whole life. i remember kings square and uptown being so magical growing up and taking the bus from my east side daycare to see plays at the imperial. i went to highschool uptown at st malachys and walked through kings square every morning and afternoon and the market every lunch. me and my boyfriend had our prom in the terminal and the long glass passage way you see is where we all stood before the walk. i dont think ive ever really appreciated anything about it until this video.
the red road you walk on is called the harbour passage. thats where me and my boyfriend had our first date afterschool. walked from school to the circle (now gone), all the way to the boardwalk and up to that little viewpoint with the pole in the video. our initials are carved into the wood overlooking the beach where we had our first kiss.
the park you walk down on chesley drive is right behind the navy building i did cadets at. i went there every week for five years but it never seemed special.
the reversing falls were always a joke since we thought the name was misleading. in this video they do truly look dramatic and beautiful haha i love how this makes me see the city differently. though i have to say i was surprised when you said you smelled mcdonald’s bc the west smells like sewage from the mill to me 😭
anyways i love this video its like a love letter to saint john. also you were crazy for not taking a cab and walking from the lancaster mall all the way to the terminal in 90 minutes thats wild 😭
Ahh, thanks for watching - I’m sorry you don’t share my love for the place. Thanks for supporting my channel!
Glad to see that you had such a positive experience in the port of Saint John!
Thanks, Patricia - I loved it here! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for visiting us here in Atlantic Canada.. i was born here and its a great little city .. we love when people visits us 🎉
Ahh, thanks for having me - I absolutely LOVED it here, incase you can’t tell from the video! 😊 ❤️
I’m from a little city near Saint John, and I feel the same way you do when I visit. I love Saint John. Wonderful video and thanks for sharing.
Hey! Ah, I’m so glad the locals get that sort of feeling too - I just loved it! Thanks so much for watching and therefore supporting my channel! :)
Free A/C - that’s so funny! Thanks a lot for watching!!
You did a great job of telling your members what a great historic city Saint John is. I'm glad you enjoyed the city. SJ is the 1st amalgamated city in Canada.

Ha, thinking back, I remember running SO FAST to get back - it was craaaazy!
Thanks a lot for watching - I’m glad you enjoyed the video!!
Come back!!! Hang out with some of us... we will show you the fun spots and some of the most wonderful places in our city.
Thanks for showing our little city in such a positive light. Great video!
Thanks for having me - you’re so lucky to call Saint John home!
What a beautiful place. Your video captured it really well
Thanks so much, Joanne - I’d love to get back here one day! 🤞🏼 🇨🇦
Locals call it the Harbour passage, but we do refer to it as the red path to tourists so they can find it 🤭 But glad you enjoyed your time here!
This is so funny - love that I was instantly labelled as a tourist. You guys have a fab sense of humour - love that! Thanks for watching, Tiffany!
Yeah you went to the west side Walmart, it’s a lot smaller, no grocery store I don’t think. There’s another in East Saint John that’s much bigger
Oh, the bigger one would’ve been a full day out for me - I love it in there, haha!

Haheha
Omg 😮 could you even imagine if there was an emergency situation on this trip?!?!? 🤯 given the service experience so far y’all would have been doomed!
So glad that you enjoyed your visit to our city ❤

Oh, I so enjoyed this port - it just felt so ‘real’ and not spoiled for the sake of tourism! Thanks a lot for following along, Johnny!
Hey, this is so funny you should say - watch this space for my video in a few ports time - you’ll laugh - I didn’t miss Tim Hortons 😂 🇨🇦
Most likely because tims coffee quality has dropped drastically in the past 7 years. Should have gone for Java Moose, really
"Smile, you're on Candid Canada!" : )
Hahah 😊 🇨🇦

Nono, I had a great time - thanks for having me, and I’d love to get back out at some point!!
I'm from Nova Scotia, nice to see that you enjoyed the maritimes.
Come back to see more
Thanks for having me - I'll be back, for sure!
@16:32 im glad you had no idea how many people self exited from that bridge 😢
Oh, we had the same issue in Scotland a few years back 😔
@FraserAtSea what did the government do to limit the access & ability for those wishing to do so?
I know there would be many of us that would be happy to be tour guides for you in your travels. I've subscribed to your channel so am looking forward to watching some other places you have been on your travels! Hope you are having a lovely day!
Thanks so much for watching, and thanks so much for subscribing - I appreciate that so much! I have actually visited Sydney and PEI - here’s the link if you’d like to see! 😊

Lol!
St. John's is in Newfoundland. Saint John is in New Brunswick. This is where he was.
I’d love you to check out my other episodes - if you’re interested, you can find my whole running order on my website to help 😊

The RED BRICK you mentioned liking likely came from Europe as balast during the 19th Century, you see it all over the East Coast. The ships headed to Europe full, and came back empty, so they needed weight, and the brick was cheap.
Ahh, I didn’t realise that - super interesting! Thanks a lot for watching! 😊
Wow. It's hard to imagine a cruise with such lousy service and bad attitudes from the crew! I think you're being wonderfully patient and optimistic about this one - after so many negative comments from so many RUclips cruise reviewers I wouldn't go near an MSC ship on a bet!
He expects Silver Sea service at MSC prices!
Hey! Thanks for watching, and unfortunately yes - MSC really underdelivered with this cruise.
@jonnieinbangkok No, I don’t…
I have sailed many budget cruise lines over the years, and never was I given the surly service that MSC has become famous for. I don’t expect caviar when I pay for pretzels, but I do expect those pretzels to be served with smile!
@@fshepinc couldn’t agree more with this - I’m even expecting the pretzels to be worse quality - you get what you pay for at the end of the day!
You will always have a great experience in Saint John.
Oh, I’d just love to make it back at some point - fingers crossed!
We took a ferry across the bay of Fundy. It was a wild ride
Oh, I can imagine!! 🌊 🌊
This was interesting to watch as someone who lives in saint john. I am always interested in seeing peoples prespective of my home
Thanks for watching - I’m glad you enjoyed! 😊
Hope you come back to Saint John! There's a lot of new work being done on the boardwalk which will make for an even more beautiful stay!
Oh, I’d love to make the trip back some day. I absolutely loved it here and feel like I’ve left a little part of me in town!
Hey, I also live in this port of call, the "red path" is called harbor passage, I use it often to get to our North end from uptown (port is uptown), and the the first bridge is called harbor bridge, there second one with the lookout is called the games falls bridge, we also have a second larger Walmart on the other side of town
Hey! How lucky you are to call Saint John home - I really loved it here! Thanks a lot for watching, and therefore supporting my little channel! 😊
@@FraserAtSea it's a beautiful city I only wish it were more ADA compliant (were working on a CDA just not they're yet)
I’ve lived in Saint John all my life. There’s so much you missed in regards to history and attractions. You definitely need a week to enjoy it all
Oh, I’d love to come back at some point - I just loved it here! Thanks a lot for watching my video 😊

Grew up in NewOrleans when I went to France and tried to speak lover there -repeatedly got who talk you how to speak French?
@@lynnfranklin5098 There is ignorance in all parts of the world. And "le snobisme parisien"" is about as bad as it gets. That being said, things have changed. No longer is standard Parisien French required on TV and Radio; the various regional dialects and even patois are taught in the regions; the absolutisme linguistique of Louis XIV is long over. Hearing an Acadien or someone from New Orleans speak French is like coming face-to-face with the history of the French language. Grandes amitiés, Lulu
Wow - this is absolutely fascinating - I had no idea! Thanks so much for watching, and thanks for taking the time to leave this comment!!
Oh wow - I had no idea the river was so long - that’s amazing! Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for subscribing - see you in another video 😊 👏🏼 Welcome to Fraser at Sea!
to be fair that is the West Side Walmart. The East Side Walmart is probably 5 or 6 times as large.
Will need to add this to my list for next time 😂
I know exactly what you are experiencing as my husband and I experienced the same bad service on Preziosa.
I'm from Saint John and I'm so happy you loved our city, please come back again and visit ❤
Oh, I’d love to at some point. Thanks so much for watching and therefore supporting my little channel!
This is an incredible review of our beautiful city Fraser 🙏🏼🚀💪🏼
Ahh, I’m so glad you think so - thanks so much for watching! I’ll hopefully make it back to you at some point - you call such a gorgeous part of the world ‘home’! 😊
I used to walk the reversing falls bridge almost every day to get lunch during school
Oh wow - it’s just a part of your every day life - how amazing 🤩 Thanks a lot for watching!
Loving your content!! We are doing our first ever Canadian cruise next sept ! I have been to St John before. Lovely area. Welcome to 🇨🇦
Hello! Thanks so much - thanks for your support! You’re going to have a great cruise - hopefully I can continue to help you get excited! 😊
As a local, I'm pleased that none of the things that went wrong were onshore! :P
Hope you can make it back sometime and see the new Market Square plaza that's finally open, and maybe check out some of the uptown pubs. :)
Ha, don’t worry - nothing went wrong off the ship - thank goodness! I’d love to make it back at some point - I fell in love with your little corner of the world! Thanks a lot for watching! 😊
Absolutely loving your videos. That place looked amazing.
Ah, thanks so much - really appreciate the support! 😊
just came up in my feed, thanks for showing us the tourist perspective. lovely video, come again eh? cheers
Oh, thanks for having me - I absolutely LOVED my visit! :)
I am looking forward to the video of you as a Pier Runner. It's gonna happen.
Ha, a live POV video 😂
@@FraserAtSea Great idea. You can show all the people leaning off their balconies cheering, as the ship pulls away. Hahahahahaaa
I have found on MSC the officer class and the management are not always the best, but bar staff waiting staff and stewards are great.
I’d sway with agreeing from my experience on here… Nobody could help at any point!
I’m so glad you enjoyed our city! We are quite proud of our container village and city!
Ahh, it was such a delight - thanks for having me!
I’m very confused…you mentioned “end September”, it looks like fall weather, but this video was posted 2 months ago. What gives with the timeline?
Should be done by Christmas 😂
Storage-wise, I relied on an upgraded iCloud account and strong wifi to push the files up, then stored locally on external drives when I didn’t have good internet - a bit of a logistical challenge, for sure!
Just want to point out that it’s Saint John as St. John’s is in Newfoundland.
MSC unfortunately do not learn their lessons from complaints I love the ships ,staff lovely to me but was worst cruise on Virtuosa complete chaos !
I've sailed on the emerald princess. gorgeous ship!
Ahh, nice! Not many in the comments have - you’re a rarity! 😊 Thanks for watching!!
Getting on that ship (Emerald Princess)to go to that port in three days 🎉💪😎
Ooh, amazing - enjoy!!

No. The tour guides were actually very rude. They weren’t MSC guides they were from Rome.
Doesn’t stop us from doing another cruise either MSC though.
The red path is how I used to get from uptown and go to the north end while skipping school 😂
Ha, that’s funny - I didn’t see any school avoiders on my journey, or I’d have told them to get back to class 😂 Thanks for watching, Alex!
Was recommended this vid, Part 2 l think, first but l'm into it now and will watch to its completion. Also, l've been watching Hudson & Rex, filmed in St John too, which makes it even more special. Thx again.
