Ukraine never had the upper hand. Russia simply attrited Ukraine over 2 years, and what we are seeing is the fruit of that work. People always understood that once Russia broke through the 3 or 4 defensive lines, there would be nothing to stop them from romping all the way to the Dnieper river, and possibly beyond.
The Russians are smart and resilient. They knew that they had to reorganise and shake off the dust of a half century of peace. They did it and for an honest observer it was predictable.

No concrete or solid fortifications would halt the pace of Russian advance in the battle fields. Israel built solid fortification in Sinai upto the bank of the Suez Canal known as Barlev Line. That too was breached and destroyed in 1973 by the Egyptian Army. The Russian military advisers planned the destruction of the Barlev Line.
The Russian Army is invincible.
Without the men, wire, mines, artillery and air support field fortifications don't form much of an obstacle.

This war a more complicated than just a profit. It's a battle of ideologies. Ukraine was always divided on East and West. Since peaceful negotiations failed - duking it out on the battlefield is the only option left.
That won't happen. Ukraine Bombed the Ethnic Russians in the east of Ukraine for 8 years, and Russia tried to negotiate peace, but the Nato Devils would not stop.

Russia invaded Donbas after many requests over 8 years for the UN to intervene. The UN did nothing.
Poroshenko planned limited deployment of regular battalions in 2017 and did not even send recon forces in 2018. He was defeated in he 2019 presidential election (a dodgy one) and replaced by Zelenskyy who promptly ousted some elected Rada deputies, took over the media and closed down the Civil Defense Service. Kharkiv paid for its own.
Throughout 2021 Russia offered talks with Kiev but Zelenskyy refused. Russia amassed tanks on the Donbas borders. No evacuation plans for civilians were ever put in place and troops were not moved to the border.
Russia invaded Donbas in February 2022 and Zelenskyy demanded weapons from the west. Emigration as refugees clogged European towns and were nonetheless treated fittingly.
Martial law was declared by Zelenskyy and all men 25 to 60 were liable for military service. Kiev militias kidnapped people from their homes and cars and leaving Ukraine became risky.
Who were the refugees actually escaping from?

NATO didnt even win militarely in Yugoslavia they bombed civilian infrastructure and then threatened to bomb all whet fields, corn fields etc so people would starve thats why the peace agreement was signed, only about 12% of military technology was destroyed.
Ukraine never hand the “upper hand”,during the 2 years of this conflict they only had an occasional reprieve from the Russian grinder.

It took 8 months for russian to build fortification and they were not under bombs, tired, with lack of ressources. And they had time. Ukraine wants to do the same with less of everything in a shorter time.

This war had two goals - to rally the West in the face of NATO, and to weaken Russia as a geopolitical rival. In terms of resources, the West spends almost nothing in this confrontation. Thousands of tons of old weapons are simply sent to Ukraine instead of expensive liquidation.
