The videos suggested by "Roll20" were torturous, and I almost said never mind. Wife found your videos and each was a joy to follow along. TY TY TY. 20yr returning paper & pen DM now tech savvy w/t roll20 VTT and loaded for bear, thanks to you teaching all the bells and whistles.
Roger Perry - You are very welcome. Happy to have you back in the hobby and happy to help you get online with your game. *Looks at the other Roger Perry comments* I have work to do.
Great series of tutorials with enough detail to enable a "New to Roll 20" GM to learn and understand basic functionality and how to use R20. On the basis of watching this and your other Dynamic lighting tutorials I have upgraded to a pro account (with contributions from all players) and will be looking to build the call of Cthulhu campaign "Masks Of Nyarthathotep" on roll 20 in the new year. I believe the features (mechanics) have been changed somewhat with newer versions of R20 but this is still really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put the series together.
Considering it just launched and we've already found 25+ known issues... I will wait a little bit. But definitely plan to update these videos for the new lighting once it is ironed out a bit.
As a new DM that is learning both Roll20 and running a game all at the same time (the learning curve looks like the final wall on Ninja Warrior)! This series has been very help full for the Roll20 aspect. You shouldn't be so down on the Fog of War though, I wanted to simplify the process, I applied the Dynamic lighting to the above ground tower ruins as there are only a few goblins there and I can focus on the lighting and a small fight possibly. But for the Dungeon I wanted to focus on the fight with so many monsters I wanted to keep it basic so Fog of War was very useful for this purpose.
Yup. It’s a fantastic one-shot intro to Dungeons & Dragons. My daughter ran it for her friends when she first started DMing, and I like to use it to teach the game to new players. Seemed like a perfect fit for this series.
so when i do ctrl+l it just takes me to the task bar any fix for this Also my players can see the whole map even with dynamic lighting so im not ssure what i did wrong
I will be honest It has been like 2.5 years since this video was made, they made a ton of changes to Dynamic Lighting. I've been using Foundry VTT for so long I can't actually recall what those big changes were.
Is Advanced Fog of War flat-out unusable? I have a scenario where it will make more sense than Dynamic Lighting, but I've not yet tried using it "live".
It is just too unreliable. I attempted to use it about a month ago and everyone's browsers chrome and firefox started crashing. When it works, it is divine. See if your group is willing to get together ahead of schedule and test their machines/browsers, if it works for everyone in your group, go for it!
I imagine that the secret passageway didn't need fixed. To me, it seems that once you pass the statue, the floor slopes downward and by the time you completely round the corner, you are actually underneath the other level. I'm new to Roll20 and haven't completed your videos yet, but is there a way to retain that look without adjusting the map? Different levels for the different floors?
There are no additional layers for backgrounds and such on a map scene. But there is an API script out there that allows tokens to teleport. Simple solution to missing a secret door and not wanting to remake it is just as the DM moving them through the passage manually to the next area, I have done this many times.
So with that, I have an API script/macro that can token sight on and off. Generally the best practice for browser performance is to leave sight off tokens unless you really need it. So i will toggle sight on, CTRL+L to look around as a monster if needed, but normally you can leave it off. (have not posted a video on the API/macro for sight but hoping to soon.)
This series is pure gold for a DM who is new to Roll20. Thanks for putting these videos together!
You are very welcome! Please share them out with anyone you think might benefit!
It absolutely is.
I’m really happy you did a tutorial for fog of war also. This was a great series!

You are very welcome. hope your game goes well.
So glad to have this clear explanation of FoW, Adv FoW, and Dynamic Lighting. Thanks!
For a very short while I was driving myself crazy trying to use fog and lighting. I hope I can save others some grief.
This is amazing thanks! Roll20 are now updating their dynamic lighting, it would be great to see a tutorial on that too!

Music choice on point! And it was helpful as always thanks.
that music always gets me hyped up to use my brain.
hey man!! very nice video and how you explained is very easy to understand. Thanks!!
Glad it helped!

At the time of this video I was a pretty big Dynamic Lighting snob, I definitely agree with you that Fog of War can speed things up immensely.
Such a clear explanation. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Isn't this the Matt Coleville dungeon? Nice :)

Thanks for this! Out of curiosity, do you worry about setting up sight for the Monster Tokens that you can drop from the compendium?

a waste of my time. I would like to learn how to use dynamic lightning but on 7min he's making maps. moving on to another video
I will miss you. Feedback is appreciated, next run through this series I will work out a script/outline ahead of time.
