  • Why are generic logo designs bad? What do you think of the logo designs that I critique in todays video?
    Try out Milanote for free here: milanote.com/s...
    I critique some of the logo designs that were sent into me for the most recent logo design competition. There were some interesting designs but there were a lot of generic designs. In this video I try to demonstrate why generic designs are not a good choice for a concept. Essentially, generic designs become lost in a sea of other similar designs, and thus the brand or company loses any uniqueness and identify.
    If you saw your logo in todays critique video and you feel like I was unfair, that isn't the case. This video wasn't made to hurt feelings, quite the opposite. I want to point out some solid technical points about logo designing. I hope that is clear to the viewers today. Hopefully you can learn better how to generate logo design ideas and concepts, for better end results.
    If you found todays logo design video enjoyable or useful, let me know in the comments section and drop a like on your way out. Subscribe to stay updated to all of my uploads and until next time, design your future today, peace

      I'm also a designer and I follow principles of less obvious design. My graphic designer logo isn't even one where you'd thing I'm a designer. It isn't until you read my slogan where it all becomes clear. I avoid by all means to try and have some that's easily forgettable as mentioned to create a unique design feel. Of which that's something My country suffers heavily from in terms of designers. Very few here are memorable

      good point. Not sure the TM placement would 'fly' in the corporate world though. Even if it does provide balance.

      I would put the TM inside the squared dot of the far right. Maybe a new way of adding that TM in a logo that is not just the text floating around somewhere like it usually is...

    The Design at 1:58 is so amazing. Using "Red Colour" what represents "actions" was a right choice. Also, the "Bold & Urban Typeface" was perfect for this kind of design. The "Hidden letter Z" and "The Dot on right' was a minor detail but made the design more professional.

    My problem is that the focus on the 0 & 7 doesn’t tell me anything about the company. There are so generic & blank it could be any company…
    I understand that a designer would try to create a unique logo to stand out from all the other concepts. But sometimes a logo should show at least some context information. especially if the company is very small & not widely known. For very big companies it’s total alright to drop this context information idea.
    P.S.: don’t get me wrong. I really love your videos & explanations. I’m also an engineer & not a designer. But as a customer I would reject the 0-7 logo designs. Just my humble opinion.
    Greetings from Germany & thank you for the great content on your channel 👍🏻 😊

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the reply.
      I would say yes and no. Sure, it can be a good idea to demonstrate what a company or brand represents in the logo, but it isn't essential. A logo is a hook, a way to remain in the consciousness of the consumer, and should be relatable to that group of people. Aspects of the logo can psychologically suggest what the brand is about, for example the Nike swoosh uses forward movement in the psychology of it's shape to suggest motion (great for sports brands). But what does a tick mark have to do with athletics? Or what does an Apple have to do with computer equipment? (I know the theory behind the apple with a bite taken out of it and knowledge etc).
      The main objective of a logo is to be simple, memorable, and to stand out from a crowd. Once the logo can be linked to a brand, the brand can roll out other brand assets such as advertising campaigns and other media that will further the extension of the brand and what it does.

    • @nobody-bt7mu
      @nobody-bt7mu 2 года назад +1

      A logo DOES NOT need to explain anything about a company. You have marketing for that. Its only job is to identify it. The logo will always come up within the company's context as it should (more important for newer companies). The most unmemorable logos are the ones who try to convey a lot of things when it's not even needed.

    • @pianocrasher
      @pianocrasher 2 года назад +1

      @@SatoriGraphics Yeah. Good points.
      Probably another aspect of context information would be the name of the enterprise. They founded Apple in 1976 as ‘Apple Computer Company’. So the logo didn’t have to transport the information ‘hey guys we make computer stuff’ because the company name already contained that hint. After they established the brand they change the name to Apple Inc (in 2007).
      After research I have to say that the first logo of Apple was VERY different to the simple modern approach, we all know today ^^'

    • @RealLaone
      @RealLaone 2 года назад

      Rejecting them just dooms your company, as designers we see generic logos and never think highly of the company compared to designs that make a company stand out. A logo shouldn't tell customers the services of the company, but to evoke a certain emotion and recognition. It is the face of the company and should stand the test of time, its hard to do that and be remmeber if you're genetic.

    Thanks for this. I'd like to offer you real talk as well. I found the delivery of this critique to be unnecessarily harsh. For example, you could have explained common patterns of responses without publishing a wall of shame. In the past, I seen you take a design, describe how it can be improved, make the improvement, then show the differences side-by-side. I believe that approach would be more instructive and less alienating to those who took the time to enter the contest.

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  2 года назад +1

      Like I said, it isn't to shame anybody whatsoever, so there isn't a wall of shame so to speak of. I had to do that to illustrate the main point of the entire video which is that generic logo design ideas rarely work out. If people, including those who designed the logos, could see how similar their designs looked to other entires, they would then understand why that choice is bad for a concept. Also there were no names given, so it remains anonymous. This did show how people can improve their designs though if you think about it, because it illustrates perfectly the main issue.

    For one side, familiarity communicate immediately what the brand is about, so people exploring cliche ideas think that is good.
    But a real brand represented by a real logo and visual identify is so much more that the type of business itself. If you look to MacDonald's logo for instance you can't figure out that is about food. Starbucks doesn't seems about coffee. A brand is made of a lot of different values but the business niche.
    In another examples, the business niche of Nike or FedEx are there at plain sight, but implicit or hidden.

    I mostly agree with what you said about generic logos but sometimes using subtle details (that isn’t too obvious) that reminds the business in question is a pretty neat and smart touch especially when it’s graphically coherent and doesn’t mess up with the overall balance. What i mean by subtle detail is for example having a part of an object used as a pattern, a continuity of a letter or a fusion with it. It doesn’t always work of course but when done correctly it can really stand out.

    I agree with you about generic logos, but that's only true 90% of the time. I think sometimes having a logo that screams "this is what this business is!" in the overt way possible is needed, and in that case going generic or with the first and most obvious idea, is the best course.

    • @SatoriGraphics

      This is a reply that I gave to someone else that I will paste below.
      I would say yes and no. Sure, it can be a good idea to demonstrate what a company or brand represents in the logo, but it isn't essential. @@SatoriGraphics Like I said, I think you're on the nose 90% of the time. If I were in a shoe store, I think having a shoe for a brand logo would be less interesting and rememberable than nike's swoosh tick, which as you said speaks to being more than just being a pair of shoes.
      But let's say if a local dentist wanted a logo, and he was the only dentist in town, I think having a big tooth would be perfectly fine as the logo, as it just immediately affirms to everyone who sees it what the business is, with little ambiguity. They're not selling a life style, nor are they really competing with anyone as most will just go to their local dentist, so the biggest hurdle is just immediately inferring what the business is; A dentist.
      Things would change though if there were many dentists in said town though, but correct me if I'm wrong.
      I'd also argue that simplicity isn't a necessity per say, I think it's just the modern visual trend. I think we'll eventually see something of a backlash trend with more complex logos (lately I've been seeing a lot of graphic designers doing logos with this kind of idea, that seem more inspired by heavy metal bands logos and are over the top. They're cool, though whether clients would ever be happy with them is another thing all together).
      I might be totally wrong on this though, and it's no doubt better to be overly simple than overly complex in logo design.

    the front part of the logo at 2:07 is a copy of the german logo from "pro7"
    Why is it in the top 3 if it's a copyright infringement?

      It wasn't in the top 3, it was being considered for the top 3. Also, it's impossible for anybody to know every single logo every made.

    I feel like clients won't appreciate simplistic, memorable logos... Idk, but I often see the most generic logos win design contests. 🙄🙄🙄

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  2 года назад

      It depends on the calibre of client you have. There is a big difference in mentality from a person who is spending $25 on their logo to spending $2,500

      @@SatoriGraphics You're right. And thank you for that... I appreciate your expert opinion a lot.
      I remember a contest where the client would hammer on the fact that they wanted a house incorporated into their logo... They were a realtor company... How cliche can it get? I have to say, I get so easily discouraged from encounters like that where a client doesn't see the ingenuity (if I do say so myself)... How do you deal with that if I may ask?

    Dear designers, in design there are no rules! It’s all about your creative path to come up with a fitting solution to a designproblem. That might take a lot of practice and a little bit of experience, but you won’t become a better designer if you follow rules. Actually, it will kill your creativity. So contrary to what is told in the video, you don’t need to stay away from clichés if they work! Just try them out, or get them out of your system at the start. That’ is how the creative process works best. Actually sometimes a cliché will do the trick because a cliché is recognizable and relatable for people who’ll see the logo/branddesign. It just depends how creative you are to make the design stand out. A brand design as a total needs to communicate a story. In this video, and this assignment, the typographical logos are shown to be the ones that stand out. But you can argue with that as well. These logos might be well designed and they might work in the over all brand design, but as a stand alone product they don’t tell anything about the specific business. So, did they nail the assignment? Next to that there are uncountable typographical logo’s. So they won’t stand out on their own and they don’t tell what business it is. That tells us we should not focus too much on logo design alone.
    That said, it is always nice to have a good critical discussion about our work! But don’t let it hold you back! Keep having fun in trying out everything! :-)

      Things aren't so black and white actually. You seem to be approaching things from the perspective of an artist as apposed to a corporate designer. Yes, rules are very important and rudimentary in design. Rules help beginners and novices understand how a design interacts with the target audience from a psychological standpoint. Once a designer understands and masters the rules, then they can be broken here and there with an educated approach.
      Having rules doesn't mean you harm your creativity, a good designer knows how to be creative while making functional design. A logo is not an expression of art, it's a targeted design which has only one purpose, to become a hook in the minds if the consumer that reminds them of a brand whenever they see it.

    Dude you picked the top 3 logos with full on website presentations when that wasn't required for the contest and even worse you never told any of us about the winners so you're trying to get your viewers into watching your videos just to get an answer. You don't care about the integrity of the contest you want video views and likes.
