  • Happy 2022! Apologies for my voice in this video, my throat had been sore for days. In this video, I revealed why I transitioned from a shopaholic to a luxury minimalist. If you'd followed me from the beginning, you'd know I used to do luxury unboxing and designer haul videos (I know right?!). It might not exactly be a shopping addiction, but I wasn't at all intentional with my purchases, which led to many shopping mistakes and expensive regrets. Fast forward to now, I'm decluttering more than I'm buying, and I'm at peace with my curated luxury collection. Many of you have asked me how I am able to stay so consistent with low-buy and no-buy, so I thought it'd be useful to share with you the reasons for my transformation. Truthfully, I might have stopped shopping (excessively), but my life is more abundant than ever xx

I'd rather carry a cheaper bag to a job I want to do, then an expensive one to a job I wish I didn't have to do. Loved it! So well put😆 I have to say it again, your videos helped me last year (already a new year, wow!) to stop with the luxury nonsense. Small sustainable brands for me now or second hand. And I'm slowly, slowly getting out of debt. I have a job I love, but in a place I dislike, so I can relate to your smart statement 😉

I share this sentiment completely. For a while I had around fifteen bags - but was, actually and realistically, only using about three or four of them. When I found that I had to remind myself to use the others, I realized that I was holding on to things that I don’t actually need but don’t want to let go of because of whatever reason. So now I’m working to give away or sell those that I don’t need - I’ve boxed them up and gotten them ready, and I am down to four bags. As Eileen mentioned, it’s actually liberating to have very few … because now what I have I look forward to using without having to force myself to do it!

Keep up the great work, advice and encouragement for all of us to join in on Luxury Minimalism. I’ve sold most of my collection during the last 4-5 months and have a few more pieces that I’m thinking about selling. I can’t tell you how freeing it is both mentally and financially. I’m actually disgusted at how these fashion houses keep increasing the cost of these bags. Truth be told, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise. It truly put things into perspective and made us realize how ridiculous we’ve become with massive consumerism. Cheers 🥂 to a New Year with less stuff, more experiences and time spent with loved ones.

Having collected Chanel and selling them off, I agree with Eileen. It’s stressful having so many bags on your shelves. I have been aggressively saving money. For a 40 year old, networth is over 1.5 million. :) All due to saving and investing money. I want to be wealthy and have freedom as well. Btw, I still drive my old car too. I may not have the super nicest stuff, but I have fat accounts, food to eat, a very nicely decorate home, travels, family, and health. It’s all I need. 💗🎉🎊 My plan this year is to save money + Invest twice as much as I did in 2021 and I’m ready!
ETA: I do have a few Chanel. I just don’t buy excessively. I buy one, sell another. It’s how I do it.

As someone who’s a recovering shopaholic, literally an actual addict, I find your channel really does keep me in check! I used to spend thousands a month specifically on luxury bags to a point I was living above my means, I finally had my “enough is enough” moment and honestly it was the best thing to happen to me. Less is more and I truthfully don’t find the high I would get from luxury shopping as much as I get a high from saving and mindfully buying ANYTHING. Honestly, your channel for me is a tool to balance my lifestyle. I know I love luxury stuffs, and "luckily" I'm not a person who has money to buy all I want at once ---I have to work hard first! 😃 Your videos are constant reminder for me, to learn to be happy and content with what I have. Beside, same like you, when I see my handbag collections, I have enough handbags for any occations.
Btw, I agree to wear more low key handbag to office. For about a year, I change my work bag from LV Delightful into an Fjallraven Kanken messenger bag. I know it's far from luxury, but 'm so happy with my decision. It's durable and fit my laptop. 😊

Hello Eileen, I agree with you on focusing on what really matters in life. Luxury is nice but I don’t enjoy watching these channels where people unbox one thing after another. It reminds me of a child holding a delicious treat in front of another child and saying, ‘look how lucky I am to have this treat and it is mine!’ Most people cannot afford luxury. I am reminded of the lengths people will go to as in looting stores to resell these coveted items. What does it say about us as a culture? Anyway, happy new year! When one is limited to where you can go & what you can do because of what one owns & wears, then luxury becomes a self-imposed prison. I witnessed this firsthand in my circle. People who get upset when their expensive designer clothes & bags get dirty or damaged so they stop doing normal, everyday activity with their families to bond (cooking & eating together, example). They worry of being robbed so they just stay at certain places and don't explore the beauty of the world. They are concerned that their expensive items will stolen at home when they are away, and so they spend more money on "protecting valuables". I even observed that empathy for other people die in their obsession of accumulating so much personal luxuries in life. Vanity & selfishness which are the roots of narcissism. What's more, these things/inanimate objects that one invests their emotions & money on cannot help you when you are in dire trouble or if your life is in danger but they serve as a reminder on how they have become "idols" to love and worship but they are only objects that don't love you back in return .

One thing I learned from young was to never spend as if money would always be coming in. We always need to save for a rainy day as things do happen in life that we’re not prepared for. My dad was never a well man but in his forties he was diagnosed with heart disease and eventually couldn’t work. He received long term disability benefits but it certainly was not the money he was used to making. My mother had to work otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to stay in our home. In my early twenties just one year after having my first full time job, I got very ill and was hospitalized and was in and out of hospital having surgeries over a three year period. I had bought a car prior to this and had to keep up the payments. Luckily I received long term disability benefits as well but had I been living on my own I don’t know how I would have managed and would have had to move back in with my parents. We were fortunately not a family who were big spenders and were very good with our money. Years later my husband and I are in a much better situation than my parents were but we still think the same. We certainly can afford to buy luxuries but we also are very practical and have been putting money into investments rather than just spending aimlessly. I like to think of myself as a luxury minimalist as well. I still love to buy beautiful things but they are always well thought out and not over abundant. As usual Eileen an amazing and insightful video.🥰

Love watching your videos. I've been debt free for years, now a stay-at-home mom. I've collected 30+ designer handbags, got into luxury jewelry (VCA, Cartier,..). Over indulged the last 2 years, even got my dream bag (Hermes Kelly). After getting the bag, I realized that's not my lifestyle anymore. I had accumulated so much, bags were sitting on the shelf never used, jewelry never worn, clothes still had tags. Started a minimalist approach after watching your videos. Downsized my collection, sold the Hermes and most of the bags at a loss, expensive lesson learned. Now only keep 10 bags maximum. Being more mindful of what I buy, appreciating what I have. Instead of spending $ on material things, to save and invest. Trying to live below my means. Focus more on self care, my health, and time with loved ones. =)

100% agree! I embraced it four years ago and the impact on my net worth is incredible. The truth is ‘where are we carrying all these bags to?’. I realized that I didn’t want to carry designer bags to work lest they think I am overpaid. When you are a parent, you tend to reach for functional backpacks and cross body bags that you don’t mind getting wet, scratched or scribbled on. So these expensive beautiful bags are just sitting on the shelf like art. Instead of the money being invested to multiply. It is also a big lie that these are investment bags. I have sold many bags and lose all the time even when the bag is in excellent shape. Only very rare Hermes bags appreciate in value. You are on the right track. Pls continue to stay true to yourself 😘😘

During the height of the Pandemic, I found myself less drawn to the sites that merely focused on Luxury Purchasing & Collecting of Handbags, Jewelry & Clothes! It seemed so inappropriate to Focus on that when ppl were dying in virtually every Country from the same thing! Time spent making Memories with those you do have is the Best "Collection" you could make!

Thank you for being direct and your honest thoughts. I, too completely agreed with you. Sometime less is more. Knowing your capability and limit is freedom. I bought my first Chanel bag since 1987 and have over hundreds of luxury bags. Today I declutter and minimize my collection to just a few. Still a good number of bags but just the best of the best and classic enough to last a life time.

I love your luxury minimalism approach. I have a few designer bags and it’s not in my budget to constantly buy bags. Plus, I have found the bags I love and very few others appeal to me enough to actually purchase. Right now I’m focused on adding a few pieces of fine jewelry to my wardrobe. I do need to replace a few articles of clothing and my thought process is “does this look like something Eileen would wear?” because I love your classic style.

  • @orattik

I appreciate the fact that you point out that part of the reason is that you actually have a really good collection of designer items. Everyone's wishlists are going to vary, but you more or less have something of most cult favourites - Hermes, Dior, Chanel, LV etc, and maybe you today would be perfectly happy to not have any of them, but I think in part your contentment comes from in fact having these things and valuing them.

I so love your videos, Eileen!!! It's a breath of fresh air in a world where unboxing weekly on Instagram and RUclips is the new normal. I am just starting my collection and sometimes, it's hard when I see almost everyone being able to afford chanel, dior, lv on a weekly basis. It makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong or not making enough lol but truth be told, I don't have a credit card, no debt but I have saved money instead. This year, I can already afford a Chanel mini flap without putting a dent on my savings. But I'm not buying one because I don't intend to work forever. I'm instead reinvesting it to live comfortably.

Happy mew year, Eileen! I am also into luxury minimalism. I have made same mistakes just like you have and now I am getting out of the declutter. I am just one person who repeats wearing same clothes, shoes and bags. I am not an octopus who can carry multiple bags. Just a few nice stuff will do and I do not need more as I know I will always go back to my favorite things. I am buying a crossbody bag soon as I sold all my old crossbody bags that show wear and tear. I buy what I need in my life but now I buy very slowly to make sure I only buy something I really need and will enjoy everyday.

It’s the most inspiring I’ve found and having your videos every Monday morning helps me to start the week with the purpose of not shopping just for the sake of shopping, but look around and prioritize other things - even a walk in the park can bring more joy than spending my paycheck on another handbag (it used to be the opposite, so that’s why I am so thankful every time I think differently than I used to). I've 'only' got 3 luxury bags - a Chanel WoC, an Alma BB and a YSL camera bag (all saved and budgeted for - thankfully before the crazy price increases!!) . Although there are many bags I admire and could probably afford, I don't have any desire to own them and would rather appreciate and use what I have. For me, working towards paying my mortgage off early and having savings feels far more rewarding than having the latest 'it bag'. Looking forward to your new direction 😀 Happy New Year 🎉 PS I'm.Coach all the way for everyday bags - and they make me feel just as happy if I'm honest 😍
