It used to be, that some high-value PC software would use hardware dongles for copy protection. Now that you've mentioned the connection to game discs, it seems obvious that amiibos _are_ basically dongles. They connect through NFC instead of a hardware port, and they protect chunks of on-disc DLC instead of entire software packages, but it's basically the same core idea. Given the prevalence of purchase-and-download games, I can see how Nintendo could have taken "amiibos" in a very different direction. Replacing game discs with amiibos almost seems like a more _conventional_ use in that light - but using amiibos for bits of content (instead of to unlock entire games) does let Nintendo sell _many_ more hunks of plastic with NFC chips than actual copies of games.

The Pokemon company did do something similar when I was a kid. There where these handheld pocket games with tiny plugin Pokemon and gym leader cartridges that also plugged in into the handheld. It was around the third pokemon gen. It was pretty hype wish they kept going with it.
