Michel Legrand - Theme from "Summer of '42"

  • Michel Legrand composed the soundtrack for the 1971 coming-of-age movie "The Summer of '42," including its poignant main theme, "The Summer Knows." From what I understand, the LP marketed as the time as the film's soundtrack actually had only two tracks from the film: the main theme and the end titles track. The remainder of the material on the LP - now as a pricey out-of-print CD - came from the score Legrand composed for the 1969 film, "Picasso Summer." Anyway, here's the main theme from "The Summer of '42."

Saw this movie when I was 15 with a bunch of my buddies. We were mesmerized. Could something like this really happen - Every young boy’s dream. We all could talk the talk, pound our chests, act like studs and every older girl’s desire….. and that was as close as any of us ever came to such a boy’s dream….we walked home, opened our books and did our homework for the next week’s assignments. But the movie and the music never left me.

I was in 11th grade, and I went with my parents to see this movie during the summer of 1971. We’re only 3 years apart. Funny how 3 years can make a difference. I bought this LP and played it repeatedly on my parent’s record player before school in the morning. Seems like you and I had similar experiences. Today, I still enjoy this music, but it’s no longer “captivating.” One changes a lot after 50 years, even though the music stays the same.

Where all these years are gone? And everyday, I ask me for why so many people prefer "hurt" the others?.. It's so easy to give LOVE (in the most wide sense of the word, a smile to somebody who seems sad is also LOVE!!!). And at the end of the way, there's the only thing who will matter. LOVE given and received, nothing else!

LOVE as you wisely pointed. is much more than we can actually fathom.

My favorite movie theme. I could easily identify because when I saw the film, I was in my teens, one year older than central character Hermie. That was 43 years ago. Forty-three years have come and gone, and no movie or theme ever affected me so poignantly. Today this song still brings me to tears.

    • @trangenusa
      @trangenusa 6 лет назад +18

you guys and gals, should read the book, it is Hilarious, from chapter 8 on OMG, laugh out load funny.
FYI, Hermie was a real character, and this was his Bio, all the things said and done were all real. He said the book started out as a Tribute to his mother and his Best Friend, Oscy, aka Oscar, who was killed during the Korean war as a Medic on Hermie's 24th Birthday, after that he never celebrated his birthday again. The book and movie evolved from a Tribute to Oscar and their friendship to a love story and coming of age.
Hermie originally sold the screenplay as a screenplay, then after they filmed the movie, the producers asked him if he could write a book. Hermie finished the book in 2 weeks, and the book became an instant best seller. Also, the producers of the movie weren't sure if it would be a hit, and offered Hermie a percentage instead of a salary. Hermie accepted and the movie became the Sleeper hit of 1973. He said the movie and book made him so much money he never had to work again just from the residuals.
Jennifer O'Neil when she acted in this film this was the exact age of Dorothy character was in real life when Hermie met her. Dorothy was a 20-21 newlywed bride.
Jennifer O'Neil bought the rights to the book, in hopes of making a sequel but obviously that never happened as Mrs. O'Neil is in her Seventies now.
When the movie came out in 1973, about 12 women wrote to Hermie claiming to be Dorothy. One of them was the real Dorothy, Hermie could tell because of the hand writing and the contents of the letter. This was in 1973, and the movie took place in 1942, so the real Dorothy who was then 20, would have been in her 50's. The letter suggested they let things lie, because Dorothy remarried and was happy and was a Grandmother. So neither of them revisited the past.
The whole movie was real, the only thing made up was the Packet Island, which was supposed to be Nantucket Island off of Massachusetts. But the movie was filmed in California up North of San Francisco, off of Mendocino. It's funny because it was filmed on the west coast they had to film the sunset as a sunrise where Dorothy says to Hermie as she's finishing writing her letter to her husband. What a beautiful morning!, was actually a sunset. LOL

    I Always Loved this movie!
I have it on DVD, and only recently picked up the Original Soundtrack album, which I believe is a French Import album! The Theme Song, Is Absolutely "Haunting", but in a good way! I was 10 & 1/2 years old, when this movie came out. I didn't see it, until my late teens, and I believe, it was on late night television. Even though the script/dialogue is somewhat simplistic, It Is Still One of
    My Favorite All-Time Movies!

Saw this when I was 14, and it has been a favorite ever since. I moved to the Mendocino coast when I was 19, and only then found out that the movie was filmed there, and not on Nantucket. Dorothy's house was built for the film and then removed, but you can still find Hermie's house on Ukiah St. in Mendocino.
