    When I was a professional tech (admittedly about 20 years ago) I specialized in two things. NVH in drivetrain and suspension, and electrical. The electrical folder in my skillset was the greatest thing I ever collected, and is basically the key to my success in life. I quickly adapted that to industrial maintenance ( mostly injection and blowmolding) and eventual to industrial robotics and automation.
    If any budding techs techs already in the industry are thinking if you should concentrate on electrical, the answer is absolutely, without hesitation. It's awesome being able to R&R a transmission in 5 minutes, but at the end of the day to a boss, you are just another parts monkey flinging things around.
    But if you can find out why the dash dims when a customer pushes the seat heater button on a cold morning. You are indispensable. That's a skillset that will not only carry you as a tech, but will follow you into basically every industry and every part of your life.

    I've been a HD mechanic for 15 years now on all makes and models of equipment. I've seen every style of wiring diagrams you can think of, and the 'ladder' style here is by far my favorite and easiest to follow. Of course VW has to run them vertical instead of horizontal but same idea. Once you get the hang of it its super easy to follow unlike some manufacturers who give you engineer level drawings with a spaghetti mess of wiring

    6:57 - Actually, that's the wire size in mm squared (mm2), not just "ordinary" mm. It actually shows the area of the wire core, basically if you cut the wire and look at the cut, the number will show you the area of that round piece of copper you see.

    I have done some wiring before for my car to disable the auto-lock mechanism for the center lock whenever I pressed the brake. Easy fix but not as easy when I try to put an aftermarket fuel pump for the car. This shows that diagram from the manufacturer should be accessible for the public to access albeit paid or need a licensed for it. But after watching the video couples of times while smelling something burnt in my room, I finally understand that I'm not equipped to do the job (yet). Thanks for sharing this video, Charles. You're the best.

    My first car was a '77 Volkswagen Rabbit and I wanted to change the stereo, so I told my dad and he said that he would help me with it. He was an electrical engineer with Detroit Edison at the Monroe Plant at the time, so we got the wiring diagrams. I am glad he helped me understand this stuff because the VAG wiring diagrams that are shown in this video were NOT clear to me at all! We figured it out and later I worked on my '85 Scirocco turbo and '92 Corrado using these, but really, it was not until I had a Boeing 727 systems class in 1989 when the notion of bus bars and load shedding that these diagrams started to make sense.
    I have the Porsche shop manuals for a 928 and used them when I had one of these for 19 years, and these are far less easy to read, but in some ways they make more sense because they are more of an overview.
    Great video!

    one of my goals in life is to be as enthusiastic about working on vehicles as Charles is. I love working on my volkswagen’s (I have 2, a mk7 gti and a mk3.5 cabrio.) but I am in the military which leaves little time and very little money to buy parts. All I work on for my job is military vehicles, mainly humvees, LMTV’s and HEMMT’s. These vehicles were engineered so poorly that I really don’t enjoy working on them and I am so worried I’m going to lose my enthusiasm for working on my vdubs. However, I still love watching you take these cars apart and it makes my day so much better after a crappy day at work. thank you charles

    This is the big leagues Charles. You were talking to me in Chinese the whole video. I didn’t understand anything but I still enjoyed watching u explain it. You were right saying it was gonna get very technical.

    • @chozen_juan
      @chozen_juan Месяц назад +1

      Its not that its very technical, but more that this video is not the walk through that many have hoped for. It starts off looking at a portion of the exhaust flap diagram discussing a few random details. Then skips over to the ecm and 91pin connector. Then goes back to the diagram again this time showing 3 pin connectors then gets into the importance of pinning and documentation. Never does show the full circuit. Then moves over to the gas pedal diagrams. This part actually makes a lot of sense to me in terms of what to de-pin and where to move it. I think a lot of people are going to have trouble reading the wiring diagrams from vw and audi. This was just a tiny snippet of a daunting and arduous task.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  Месяц назад +1

      So we did talk about the whole circuit of flaps exactly as they are listed in the diagram. 95% of stuff doesn't look like the gas pedal. Thats why I picked the pedal and the flap. We are on both sides of that .

    Wiring is going to be something I am going to tackle on that Audi and have already rewired the coil connectors and probably have to do the injectors as well. That 2001 A4 has some crispy wiring lmao And now I see how those 1.8t are just left because of the wiring.
    I am now doing my second VW bug wiring harness and it's a 1971 which makes it so much easier to understand wiring diagrams after years of doing it to my first car i ever owned. And the bug wiring is stupid easy tho lmao

      When I pulled the 3.6 out of a Passat a few years ago, I followed Dave's guideline for where to cut the body harness. So I could send it to him and have him make me a harness. I probably will to it myself ,but I have that option.

      Dont hold your breath bud. I can tell you off top, 98% of the people who watched this video are just as confused as they were before it started. This is a theoretical breakdown of how you might go about looking at one circuit. That said, there are lots of others that are more complex and require understanding of how to trace wires, complete circuits, and read diagrams. Not to mention some of the hangups that will inevitably happen. Its incredibly tough for shops to account for this, let alone price that out. Customers would basically need to hand over a blank check. You're already gambling with a wrecked RS3 trying to get it running and swapped into the Golf. Then comes a laundry list of other components that may or may not have issues. Honestly if you don't work on cars or have good friends that will sacrifice time, you're going to be looking at a bill that negates the entire thing.

      There was a shop that did it, they stopped. Im not sure exactly why. LOL Things like this are HARD to make $ on at any kind of scale. You'd basically tell a client, bring me your car, and $40k and we will try and make it happen. Could be more, could be less.

    and then you run into things that are spliced to other things that are not marked in that diagram. coworker had issues diagnosing wiring on a Amarok a few weeks ago because he thought he had unplugged everything that was spliced into that wire, forgeting that oh yeah this is the brake pedal sensor and there is a towhitch on this one so it goes to the towhitch module aswell which isn't marked on the diagram i am in because it is it's own diagram.

    Hi @HumbleMechanic , I have a question regarding the ECM. I'm assuming you using the one off the RS3. won't the golf now identify as an RS3 ? And is there a way to still use the RS3 ECM and code it so that it now identifies still as a Golf but with the Audi ECU? Did you encounter any issues with regarding the coding in a way that VW blocked off the coding maybe?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  Месяц назад

      Yes. In fact this is one of the things unitronic is working on now.
      It had to be set up with the golf VIN. It worked with an Audi vin. But then the car thought it was an audi

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  Месяц назад

      Yes I used my golf Keys. When you do it right, you tell the ECM/TCM that it's now a Golf not an Audi. It's like "Oh okay cool:". That did require ODIS the VW/Audi scan tool. That is the next tool on my list to get.
