  • Alright, we have thoroughly covered all of the full-auto footage from OFASTS over the last few weeks. Now it's time to move on to another topic: cleaning brass. I haven't done a how-to video in quite some time, mainly because I haven't had a need to reload or do any mods or repairs to my arsenal of late. But, after washing some brass for yet another time with my .303 brass cases and not likely the mess and lack of shine I get, I decided to use my 40th birthday Amazon gift cards and purchase a new brass case tumbler!
    For some time now, I've been looking at small-end brass tumblers, and while I considered getting a Lyman model, I saw this Frankford Arsenal Quick-n-Easy tumbler on sale for less, so I jumped on the purchase. What we have here is a perfect small scale tumbler that's perfect for the casual reloader like myself. Sure, there are bigger ones I could have bought, but I'm lucky to reload 50-100 a month, and there's just no reason to have a big, honkin' high-end tumbler.
    This one will clean up to 300 brass cases at a time, and as you can see in my video, they weren't kidding. I put nearly 80-100 cases in it and had plenty of room to spare. This item did take a few minutes to assemble, but once you have it ready, it's so easy to use that even a novice could figure it out in 5 minutes or less. And you can use any media you like, so if you prefer walnut or something else, you can easily dump that in there.
    I did not splurge and get the revolving media separator. I found that with small quantities of brass, I can just as easily fish the brass out by bare hand. Reloading is all about convenience and saving money, so no point in buying stuff that I really don't need.
    Anyway, enjoy the vid, more to come soon! Next time, we get to see how to replace a broken firing pin on the Romanian Tokarev TTC, which I busted at OFASTS back in June. Enjoy!

    I use a tumber also; makes a big difference. You can also buy a jar of citric acid powder at your local pharmacy. Mix a little powder and water in a milk jug, put your recently tumbled shells in the jug. Shake them for a few minutes. They will come out extremely shiny and will also clean the inside of the shells a little more.

      If you ever get a Lee Enfield, you'll thank you're lucky stars for reloading. A box of 20 commercial rounds can go for $20-$30 (or $1.25 to $1.50 a round!), but via reloading, you can get it down to $0.70 a round on avg. Enjoy!

    I clean all my brass out on the patio, and if you leave the lid off the Frankford. It'll clean twice as fast. For some reason when you leave the lid on.. It slows down the tumbling. Be sure and add about a cap full or two of Nu-Finish car polish, and let it mix in really well before you add brass. This will make your brass shine much better.

    If you get an ultrasonic cleaner in addition to the tumbler, the dirt comes off the inside as well as the outside of the cartridge and then the tumbler, with a little liquid polish added, will make the brass gleam, Allow at least 1 hour of tumbling for the polish to mix with the media before putting in the brass.

    Cabela's model 400 tumbler moves the brass at nearly twice the speed of the Frankford, is quieter and has a real lid tightener instead of a whimpy wing nut. Also, save your money on the Lyman rip off media and go online for blasting media...$35 for 40lbs of 14/20 corncob, free shipping...works perfect. Throw in a few small squirts of Mothers metal polish, a cut up used dryer sheet to help keep the media clean and wear surgical gloves to prevent tarnish...mirror shine!

    Since you did this Video in 2012.? how is that Tumbler holding up now in 2016.?

  • @20thcenturyfilmdocs
    @20thcenturyfilmdocs  12 лет назад

    Yeah, in theory it does...but realistically, I don't see too much improvement...not that it's necessary, it's the outside of the brass that matters more. Folks swear by polishing, and it does help a bit when inspecting brass for neck-cracks and bulges and little imperfections like that which mean the case needs to get tossed...but frankly, a good pair of eyes will catch any of those after a simple case tumble job (or hand-wash job LOL).
