Thank you. I look forward to the Resurrection because of Jesus Christ. God's peace be with you.

    Thank you for the explanation.
I have a question: do first century Jews believe in heaven and hell? Or else, what do they think about the afterlife? Do they believe in everlasting punishment, as Daniel chapter 12?
Would be great if you could compare the beliefs in the afterlife of first century and contemporary Judaism.

Some Jews, before and during Jesus ministry, believed in the resurrection of the dead. '24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day, (in a general resurrection).
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
(this is a hard saying as well; read literally it is a case of life returning if a dead man comes to belief in Jesus).
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
(Another hard saying. Could it be the case that no man since Jesus has been able to believe in him? Does that account for the fact that the death rate remains one apiece?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world'. (I think Martha's statement here is very fair, but is she slightly side stepping his question?)
After Jesus said this, people continued to believe in the resurrection. Jesus' resurrection (God raised him from the dead) eventually caused many people to subscribe to the belief. Most of those people had long ago or never embraced other beliefs held by first century Jews.
As has been pointed out by many people, Israel literally meant struggler or wrestler with God; you can not win them all. There are benefits to a so say we all religion, along with drawbacks.
