Might this cause the clutch to disengage while the winch is performing a pull? Mine has done that lately. I will be winching and performing a pull and suddenly the clutch pops out of position and it’s suddenly in free spool mode. And when I pull the winch line out, it makes a rough, grinding type of sound.
@@shawnward6311People have said that it was the thermal shutoff that was causing it. I was probably overtaxing the winch (several long pulls uphill in thick mud WITH a 2000lb trailer) and it was just protecting itself from over working.
Thanks so much, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Did you find out the problem mines doing the same thing?

What model winch do you have? Clutch lever looks different than mine
I've always called it a setscrew
What was the concern with this winch
The gear lever was stuck in either free spooling or engage position.
