Gin Cocktail Recipe - The Corpse Reviver #2

  • The Corpse Reviver #2 is easily a favorite gin cocktail of mine - and today I'll share with you this simple recipe! Dating back to the mid 1800's, the corpse revivers were a family of cocktails intended to revitalize the drinker. Many bartenders created their own corpse reviver recipes because there were no strict guidelines to how these drinks were built - over time, however, most of these "reviver" recipes were long forgotten. Thankfully, Harry Craddock preserved the Corpse Reviver #2 by including its recipe in The Savoy Cocktail Book (amzn.to/39y210d) in 1930. The build is simple, and the taste is wonderful - I hope you enjoy this drink like I do! Cheers!

    What would be your personal "reviver" cocktail to give someone who's looking for a quick pick-me-up? I just give them a shot of bitters 😂 Anyway, cheers everyone! ✌️

    • @christinecamley
      @christinecamley 3 года назад +1

      Bitters would likely help me. a lot more, than this stiff drink, to revive after a evening of too much imbibing!! The benefit of being 5'4 and about 115 pounds, is that I am cautious with how much alcohol I drink!! Lol!! My limit is one of these cocktails!! I can't fathom a few in quick succession!! Cheers Anders!!

    I made this once for my colleagues at uni for a knockout exam that I already passed. Close to Easter, cause I'm hilarious.
    Those who passed were "revived", and the ones who failed would need a pick me up.
    Worked great!
    Btw, I used Lillet Blanc, Belsazar Dry Vermouth, Pernod Absinthe, Cointreau, Beefeater and a dash of orange blossom water. I wanted a floral note, so I added it.

    According to David Wondrich, the last time the Kina Lillet recipe was changed was back in 1917 (way before the Vesper was invented), and a while ago he tried a letter-perfect Vesper with original, 1950s spirits (including Kina). He claims the Kina actually tastes like Lillet Blanc, seemingly putting another urban legend to bed. But who knows?

    Corpse Reviver #2 revived! Thanks Anders, for the recommendation to use Cocchi Americano. I'm a newly-minted home cocktail making enthusiast, still trying lots of combinations to see what I like. The first time I tried Corpse Reviver #2, I made it with Lillet Blanc.. I thought I would like the Lillet Blanc because it was mentioned by name in so many cocktail recipes. I didn't. I didn't even think I liked this drink. Then, I switched it up for Cocchi Americano. I also used Meyer lemons, as the real ones seem to hurt my stomach, and voilà -- I like this drink!

    Made my first one of these last night and it was fantastic! Easily among my favourite gin cocktails. I subbed out the cocchi/lillet for dolin blanc since its what I had to hand, and added maybe 2ml simple to slightly elevate the sweetness.
    I'd like to give americano a try, but the fact that I can only find 750ml bottles puts me off. I don't drink enough vermouth based cocktails to easily get through a 500, or even 375ml bottle before it's past its best.

      What is Swedish Punch?

    • @UnclePete
      @UnclePete 3 года назад +1

      @@NicholasFiennes Back in the old days people drank a lot of punch. There was one particular punch called Swedish punch that has batavia arrak in it. it shows up in a lot of old cocktail books but was impossible to find for a long time. There is one brand of swedish punch available now called Kronen. I like to make my own, which I will do soon on the channel!
      It is basically a rum punch in a bottle.

    Hey Anders! The battery in my wall clock has also expired....however I shan't offer it a Corpse Reviver No. 2, 1, nor any other number. I shall reset the time to 5pm, place it gently back on the wall, and every time henceforth I want to check the rime, I will be immediately informed that it is 5pm, the perfect time for a cocktail...henceforth again will always be the perfect time to indulge! Your health!

    I made this once before and didn't like it. I tried again but used Luxardo Bitter Bianco instead of Cocchi Americano, Cointreau for triple sec... and it was really nice!

    Definitely my favourite Gin drink! I wasn’t 100% sold on the Cocchi here (not that I didn’t like it overall just not this cocktail) I prefer a blanc vermouth and your choice of gin is great, I like something north of 40% ABV for sure (Tanqueray is my choice here)! Awesome vid and energy as always!

    One of my faves for sure. Really delighted to see you use Cocchi Americano rather than Lillet. I share your rather liberal interpretation of what a dash of absinthe means [spray spray spray and then spray some more. And also, spray] A bright wonderful thing - cheers!

    I tried substituting the lillet with a reynac blanc; you have to tone it down a little cuz I find the reynac quite a bit sweeter but also makes a superb drink!

    I can never find Cocchi Americano so I decided to try this awhile back with Lillet Blanc and found it largely unappealing. But today I came back to it with an experiment in mind of using some Jack Rudy's Tonic syrup to regain some of that quinine goodness that Lillet lacks. I also used Dry Curacao in place of Triple Sec/Cointreau to maybe offset the sweetness of the syrup. I am going to attempt some different ratios (the gin gets a little lost currently) but I am very pleased with the result!

    Tried this with bog standard Gordon’s gin and a crappy unwanted bottle of aldi absinthe, it was delicious ! Regarding the spray of absinthe , would it be an idea to spray the glass before you chill in the freezer ?

  • @JoannaBoj

    Just made it with Bombay sapphire gin, Cointreau and dry Fino Sherry, skipping absinthe which I don’t have (not a huge fan of anis flavours anyway). Had to add a dash of soda water just to mellow it down for my own taste (next time I’d just serve it on ice) - I’m having a sensitive taste buds day ;)

    I went to a dive bar tonight in Columbus Ohio. They had everything required for this drink except for fresh lemon juice ironically (maybe unironically).
    They were crowded when I showed the bartender the build. He was serving Coors lights and the occasional whiskey on the rocks and seemed ecstatic when I asked for the drink.
    I stressed that he should make the drink when he had time but he immediately started and asked if he could make it with a sour blend instead of lemon juice. I of course obliged and tipped nearly 50 percent.

    • @AndersErickson

      I always juice a fresh bottle right before we shoot the videos, then keep it in the fridge over the next few days (I'll use it for cooking, more cocktails, etc.). I try to use all the juice over the next three days - the juice is still okay beyond that, but the flavors aren't quite as bright as when it's fresh. Great question, Eric!
